      to me

I’m sorry Pat but after reading Riley Erickson application again I don’t want to call him. His application is disturbing to me and I don’t think he would be a good fit for an Airedale.

Let me know if you want to not go any further with it. I don’t mind but it was just really strange.

By the way the guy I talked to, Thomas McKay, had Covid in July and was in the hospital for 4 weeks. He feels lucky to have made it. Scary isn’t it?

Yeah I read this one when I posted it to the board. Maybe I should respond and state the application is not making sense and leave not at that.

After a thorough review of this application, I did not feel that she warranted a follow-up phone call. There were inconsistencies I noticed and a general lack of information provided. Additionally, there were some really key points of concern:

        1. She waffles between being the only caregiver and not being the only caregiver. She mentions her husband but does not give us any information about him. She then mentions other householders taking care of the dog if she travels on business or vacation: is it the husband, other family members she’s not bothered to give us? What is the real situation here?

        2. She notes they have an e-fence. E-fences may (and that’s a big ‘may’ when we’re talking Airedales and squirrels/cats/etc.) keep a dog in but they do not keep other critter outs. There is a lot of wildlife in that area, including coyotes. Coyotes are known to jump fences, but an e-fence is an open invitation to any wild animal. The address they have provided is on a spit of land on Lake Oconee where there is a lot of wildlife in the area.

        a. Per Greene County code Sec. 4-26(a), e-fences are not legally allowed (it took me 2 minutes to find this information).

        3. She does not provide us with the brand of flea and tick prevention, saying she can’t remember what she gives or how often she gives it. She currently has a 14 YO Beagle so should not have a problem providing us with that information. Certainly she should remember if she gives preventative meds on a monthly or quarterly basis! If she doesn’t, I have concerns the dog would receive its appropriate preventatives.

        4. Crabapple Knoll Vet Clinic is a 2-hour drive from the home in Lake Oconee. The applicant notes she has been living at this address a. 5-10 years. Lake Oconee is a popular second home destination but if the applicant is living there full time, that is a very long drive to a vet, yet she does not provide us with any alternative or emergency vet information.

        5. She provides the name of a reference, yet no information for contacting the reference.

All of this leads me to believe that a dog is/will not be a priority in this household.

Pat H .Sent a polite decline.

From Mary MC: 2/26/2021 Helena Shannon – Approved to schedule home visit

Helena and her fiancé, Conor, moved to TN in December from Chicago. Lucca has papers from a very reputable Welsh breeder so it is clear they took the time to find the right breeder. Signal Mountain Animal Hospital confirmed Lucca is up to date with flea/tick and he is neutered. He is also chipped. Helena and Conor moved there in December so have only seen them once but no negatives they saw or in their notes.

Helena was very thorough filling out the application, which speaks to her intentions and true interest. We didn’t have a lot of time to talk as I’d called her and had to leave a voicemail but she called me back shortly thereafter. She was so excited, she wanted to get back to me ASAP. We didn’t have a lot of time to talk because we both had upcoming appointments but she confirmed much that was in her application. She was especially when I told her that I also had both a Welsh and Airedale. I asked about the Airedales she mentioned as having had in the past and told me that when she was little, her mother had 2. She clearly enjoys the Welsh personality so an Airedale would be more (and bigger!) of the same.

Next steps: Schedule a home visit for them.

Note: Helena and Conor are getting married April 17 and then will be on honeymoon, so it is best to wait for May before they get an Airedale. She’s aware that currently we don’t have any spare ‘dales.

2/28/21: Padme is not the dog for her as she is not dog friendly in addition to her jumping and pulling.

Needs small 50 lb that is dog freindly.

2/23/2021 From Julie E. Very nice man, had goldendoodle – looking for a more active dog. He runs 50 miles a week and they walk the door -2-4 times a day.
Fenced in yard is going to be expanded bc the neighbor is putting up more fence.
Vet – seen every 3 years for wellness and vaccines, Had mass on spleen, euthanized at home *
Joe Pope is his brother in law who is on his 3rd Airedale – so he has a knowledgeable expert, Friendly with his vet, and Neighbor is a dog trainer. So he has LOTS of subject matter experts.
                    I recommend a home visit.

2/23/2021: Pat spoke with Matt Wild last night. Penny is a digger and sounds as if she “plays” her people not coming in when called. Family is currently living in a condo until home is done; Penny is a big digger in the yard. Sounds like an active family who love Penny but it is just not a good fit. Kids don’t seem to care. Wife prefers the Boston terrier.

Waiting on photos and vet records. This may be a waffling parent as they are feeling very bad about giving her up.

Thanks for the update. If he has not followed-up with you in a month, and he knew the ball was in his court, generally I put them in a category of “they will contact us” and don’t expend more energy.

I will put your notes on the message board and move him to never adopted.

On last chat I had with Joseph, I feel as if we had covered most of the bases and I would assume he and his wife would be ready for a home visit.

I haven’t heard back from Joseph and the ball was last in his court to get back in touch with me.

I’m relatively new to this. How aggressive would we like to be in following up?

I’ve got notes from our previous call which was cut short due to work constraints.

He’s a much better candidate via phone than what the application would suggest.

Notes thus far (expected we will reconnect this week to complete):
D11 – Wife – wants the dog as well.
Wife has prior experience with large breed dogs, had a German Shepherd.
What will you do if deployed Overseas? Joseph’s wife will stay stateside with the dog.

Application mentions the dog being alone for 7 hours, but there are opportunities within the typical work day to ensure the dog is not left alone so long.
                          Typical Workday:
                          6a – PT
                          7:30 – home to shower
                          9AM – back to work
noon – home for lunch if need be (wife may also fill this role)
5PM – home for the evening

Does not plan on kenneling the dog, but is open to doing so.

Joseph as never formally trained a dog. -Mentioned Caeser Milan and Ian Dunbar (i encouraged Ian and positive reinforcement training while discouraging negative reinforcement techniques)
                          Airedale Background:
Joseph was 10 when the family got theri first airedale and he is 21 now. The dog is 11 and still alive.
Also had a pomeranian and they socialized both
-Airedale is in Texas and his parents have the dog – it was theirs. It is up todate on shots, etc.

That’s it for now, and I’ll follow up when I’ve got everything after hearing back from him this week.
                          Thanks,

                                  Pat,

After a few days of playing telephone tag, I was able to speak with Caroline Orman today and we had a good conversation. Champ is like their 3rd child, she told me. He goes everywhere with them and those times he can’t go with them on vacation, they have someone come to stay with him. Their daughter, Catherine, has pretty much grown up with him as she was just 1-1/2 YO when they rescued Champ and he is, she called him, “Catherine’s keeper.”

They would like Champ to have a companion. There are a lot of dogs in the neighborhood. Champs shows interest but is not aggressive. They have neighbors with a goldendoodle who once came into the house, walked over to Champ’s food bowl, and ate all the food without Champ having an issue with him doing it. Champ isn’t territorial so adding another dog doesn’t seem as if it would be a problem.

I asked about the size of their yard. She thinks it’s about 40′ x 50′. Part of that is bricked. I wondered how much space that would offer two dogs for running and playing. She told me that there are also side yards. I think the home visit can better discern the space. As I write this, I realize I forgot to ask about daily exercise/walks so the home visit volunteer will want to ask about that.

Craven Animal Hospital – Champ is up to date with all vaccinations, kept up with all the prescribed meds, etc.

Jill’s Pet Resort – Jill had high praise for the family and Champ and told me that Caroline would be an ‘ace’ candidate for adoption. Champ is in regularly for grooming and is a happy boy.

                                  Mary
