          Hello Robert and Sally,

Padme has been in foster care for a week now and foster mom Cindy who says she is just a sweet, easy dog. Very good with her routine. She has gotten a good bit of exercise this week and very much enjoys being outside. As there were concerns over her interactions with other dogs, Cindy started dog interactions with walking together and then progressed to all dogs off-leash (this is a controlled environment). Padme is fine with my Airedales as well as Giddy my wire-haired dachshund. She gets excited to be out with them but settles pretty quickly. Padme is not physically able to be a rough player. My dogs are all polite and easy in their dog interactions so it is a very good dynamic.

Cindy does an exercise called “stationing” with the dogs where I have treats and they all have to wait their turns as I say their names and offer the treat. They cannot move forward to try and take another dog’s treat. Padme quickly learned the game and waits her turn.

I have had one indication that she would resource guard with other dogs. I gave her a chew antler on the back porch which she was very much enjoying. Giddy approached and at about 3 feet away, Padme gave a little growl warning to Giddy. Giddy did not advance as she understands “no” from another dog. I then removed the antler with no issue from Padme at all so confident she would not guard with people.

Padme to be a wonderful, sweet dog. Cindy thinks she should be an easy candidate for adoption to someone wanting an older, easy-going dog.

Please let me or Christina know if we can connect you to Cindy and arrange a time to meet Padme.

              Hi Pat,

              With regards to resource guarding;
I separate the dogs when feeding their meals so food is not an issue . Padme waits for her food bowl and has no issues with me removing the bowl when she is finished.

I do an exercise called “stationing” with the dogs where I have treats and they all have to wait their turns as I say their names and offer the treat. They cannot move forward to try and take another dogs treat. Padme quickly learned the game and waits her turn .

I personally don’t mind a dog giving another dog a growl warning to say no but I also ensure the other dog moves away. So they all know the rules. However I also work the “stationing” game with toys as well as food with my dogs so they all learn that everyone gets a toy in turn. I will work this with Padme as well.

Bottom line – I find Padme to be a wonderful, sweet dog. I would think she should be an easy candidate for adoption to someone wanting an older, easy going dog.

Thank you for your time, and making me feel like an inadequate dog owner. Although my dogs have been on heart worm for a consecutive 3 months now, I’m only human and can admit to forgetting at times – it does not mean I don’t have a healthy dog.

As far as Airedale’s go, I’m extremely passionate about this breed and strive daily to keep him engaged and in tip top shape through play and training. Prior to covid we were working on getting his therapy dog certification through HABIT. I can assure you that I’m a very responsible dog owner and although my dog is intact, he is not left to run rampant.I accepted that responsibility when I made the decision not to neuter him. I also have taught myself the method of hand stripping to preserve the “breed standard” and do what’s best for for his coat and skin.

I’m not asking for you to re-review my application as your organization has policies it needs to adhere to. But please don’t insinuate that I don’t provide a nurturing and healthy environment for my dogs. Anyone that’s met me could easily tell you otherwise.

Placing an Airedale in a foster or adoptive home in which other dogs in the home are not tested and maintained on heartworm preventative is just not something Airedale Rescue Group will do. Our organization has a very strong commitment to spay/neuter for the overall health of the dog, to reduce overpopulation through unplanned litters and to support breed standards for the Airedale breed. I doubt we would waiver from these standards.

ARG considers your application to be closed.

                    Amanda,

Airedale Rescue Group would like to thank you both for your interest in fostering an Airedale.
After reviewing your application, we have come to the unfortunate conclusion that fostering a rescue Airedale that would not be a good fit for you. As you are most likely aware, Airedales and most dogs for that matter, come to the rescue because of troublesome issues. Many times health issues, including heartworm infections, which are preventable, require hundreds of dollars to treat and months of kennel rest and leash walking.

Airedale Rescue Group requires the dog we take in and place in foster homes is maintained on heartworm preventative. Further, we do not place an Airedale in a home with intact male or female dogs.

Stability and consistency are just a couple of ingredients in a successful rescue recipe. Our goal at ARG is to find the best, most nurturing, and permanent home for our Airedales.

We wish you well in your desire to foster.

                    Sincerely,

                      Pat,
Padme has been with us 4 days now and has settled in to a routine .
We take it slow with introductions. I am walking her four times a day to get her familiar with new surroundings and get her in the mindset of being with me. She has quickly learned to walk nicely on leash. I am recovering from a fall and a sprained ankle and she is super arthritic so we are a perfect match. Will get her out with more challenges and excitement when I am able.
She has been introduced to my three dogs with a fence between and all dogs off leash. Greetings were very calm and friendly. Will progress to walking together and then free interaction.
She was very dramatic for the first two days . She had a screaming, melt down when she saw Bruce drive off in his truck the first morning! She has very excited, deep, demanding bark when excited. It actually sounds snarly and threatening as the girl has a huge deep chest.
We have practiced a lot of “appear and disappear “ over the last few days and she has relaxed considerably. Also practice calm departures and greetings to lower the drama and intense mindset.

I think Padme is a bit old before her time. Really stiff and arthritic in front and back joints. Very slow to get herself up and down. Being overweight is not helping . She also has no musculature I suspect from lack of exercise. She has huge bald elbow calluses probably from being crated excessively without padding. She is getting lots of short exercise sessions everyday to get some weight off and build some support muscle. I have also put her on a joint supplement . I did not see mention in her Vet records of joint issues.
Both eyes are cloudy put particularly her right eye . There is mention of this issue in her vet records. Suspect this impacts her distance eyesight and could create some reactivity.

                      My general thoughts about Padme:
I find her to be total sweetness and very responsive and complaint to any guidance .
She deserves to be someone’s special girl.
I think she is best suited to a quieter lifestyle. Walking is ideal for her but she is not suited to hiking. She also does not need to be with a young boisterous dog bumping into her. I suspect she will be fine with any calm mannerly dog . Same with regards to children.
She does love to ride in the car. She is great about being handled. She barks and warns when delivery trucks are at the gate. No big deal – so do my dogs but she doesn’t know when to turn it off when asked like my dogs . We will work on that.
No guarding of food with me or Bruce. Have not challenged her with food and dogs . Will test that out.
She loves water ! Took her no time to find a mud hole to jump in head first. And if there is a sprinkler on she will stand in the spray.
Very easy to fall in love with this big girl.

                          to me

                          Pat,

                          Thanks for checking in.

Yes, a great first last night and full, routine / regular day with him today. We expected the high energy when he arrived, very surprised he slept soundly all night (no crate- option of crate in other room where Tess sometimes sleeps- but in his own bed beside Tess in our room, we just let them choose and this was how it played out), and was totally chill all day. When we all got back together at end of day, he got excited again. Showed a little alpha to Tess when she was trying to greet us but we gave them space and Tess stood up for herself and also kinda downplayed it so I let Finn-dry know “no” but followed Tess’ lead.

He knows this is home and as each of us come in from our days, he seems so happy to see us. We are so happy to have him! He’s getting plenty of exercise(loves to chase butterflies!), we haven’t given him any treats because it seems so overwhelming, and we’re trying to keep it simple. We only give Tess treats when she gets groomed or bathed or some special behavior. We’ll save them for training when we get to that. He sits / goes down when we ask, and hasn’t been mouthy at all. Definitely comes when we call or stops when we say.

The cat thing is going great! Our cats are so chill and seem to dismiss him, even if he barks at them through the glass door. He forgets they’re there and usually walks right by them when we take him outside. Ronnie left the door open accidentally today and Finn-dry went outside but Ronnie played it cool and shook the dog food, called both dogs to eat and Finn-dry came right back in. We are keeping him on leash at all times outside right now, but foresee him being good about staying here.

He follows Tess around like a sweet puppy, and doesn’t incessantly jump or annoy her. She wags and wags her tail at him and seems to genuinely like his addition to our family. (She has no problem going in the other room to sleep whenever she wants to get space from him.)

He stayed in the hard-wood floor hallway all day with Ronnie (working in a room off the hall with door open) in eyesight. I think he’s chosen Ronnie as his favorite.

Hasn’t been barking too crazily, or repetitively, but his bark is loud and he does bark when something changes outside.

Seems pretty normal and all par for the course! We feel lucky; glad his last owners loved him, but really glad he’s here, now.

Wow, he is so cute! He looks like a little Ewok. He seems as tall as Tess who has very long legs for an Airedale, is a little butterball and on the heavy side at the moment, we love his ears and his coloring and his happy, curious stare, and the way he prances so fancy when he walks. He’s full of joy!

Thanks for setting him up here and organizing dogs and families in a together, forever way!

                          love & luck,
                          Shannon

I talked with her 4/15/21 in POM. She is an experienced Airedale owner who dealt with dogs that development significant health issues. She lost them both before moving to AL earlier this year. She has 3 cats that can be separated from a foster dog. She sent photos of her home and fully fenced yard.

I have put Jamie and Chris Lincoln in touch with each other. Jamie will foster Tootles for up to 30 days as we formulate a plan for his health screens.

                                  to me

Pat, I’ll call Carol Tschida. Will you see if you can find the photo of Sammie and her new family on March 26th? I know it was on FB at one point, but I cannot find it. Her prev owner has asked about Sammie & Pink and wanted photos and I can’t find that photo of Sammie!
