4/2/21: Charlie was evaluated by Sean of “Follow My Lead” 703-283-4065

Charlie is an affectionate dog that appears to have had training and knows sit, down, heel and walking in heel. He did not pull and was excited ( teeth chattering) when encoutered another dog at the park. The other dog was very excited and on a flexi. Sean stepped off the path with Charlie and had Charlie in a sit. The second time he encountered the dog they walked right past it; no issues. Sean was talking to Charlie. He introduced Charlie to a dog in his home and there were typical sniffing but nothing inappropriate.

Sean allowed Charlie rest time. When he was resting Sean called his name but Charlie did not respond. Sean stood near him at the end of the leash, gave a gentle tug on the leash and called his name; Charlie woke with no issues. He was slow to get up, but that is understandable with him having has a lot of exercise and having arthritic hips.

Charlie has separation anxiety and chewed a doorknob at Wendys. He wants to be where his people are. The foster/adopter should work with a trainer to help Charlie deal with separation anxiety and only leave him for very short times (15 minutes) to start and increase duration of time alone gradually. A calming treat may help to navigatie through this process. His separation may be partly due to having been boarded for 3 weeks. He needs to be in a home as soon as possible.

Over all nice dog with great potential in the right home without children.

        Hello Robert,

We have a 9 yr old female Airedale who is needing to find her new home. She has been with the same person since a pup. About 3 years ago, the man married and a small dog was introduced into the home. Padme (pad-mae) was the only dog and had dad’s undivided attention up until a few years ago, but her new mom is allergic to Padme and they have been unable to resolve this issue.

Padme is a sweet, adult-oriented, 70 pound, exuberant girl looking for the love of a new mom, dad, or both. She has not spent time with children and, as a result, they make her nervous.
She has always been possessive of both food and toys. This was not a problem until a new pup came along. Although Padme does not share well, this has not escalated into a fight but has been limited to loud vocalization and teeth showing. Padme is an inside dog who loves car and grooming. She has always been crate trained and will just sit in her crate with the door open when the family is home. She tends to get anxious when left alone outside of the crate. She is not a fan of other dogs and will need some work with leash walking again. She is a healthy girl and will be due for vaccines and heartworm testing in July 2021.

Please let me know if you would like to talk about making Padme a part of your family.

            to me, Christina

Lovely family, has adopted thru ARG before like Christine said. They haven’t moved, 9 year old Riley (ADT) would love a friend
They walk several times a day, very active, the dogs go where we go.
            Great vet reference.
Told her we don’t have many in rescue currently. But she understood and wanted to put her paperwork in early.

            Good people

3/29/2021: Addie Adams has been moved to status of do not adopt. It is apparent Charlie did not receive the appropriate care for dx of thyroid issues, pain from him issues or positive Ehrlichia with not offered or declined.

3/29/2021: In boarding since 3/17/2021. Charlie has been moved from Pet Paradise in Atlanta to Cumming, GA to Cumming Veterinary Clinic, under Dr. Martinez care, and will be boarded through Thursday. Thursday Wendy will pick him up and keep him at her house overnight and her trainer Sean will work with him on Friday.

Goal: Is he adoptable into the right situation.

After reading the veterinary records there seems to have been a lack of care for Charlie. There is no way to tell from the records if the owner declined services and medications or the vet did not recommend.
                  1. Ehrlichia positive since 2019; no evidence of treatment with doxycycline.
                  2. overwight by at least 10 pounds
                  3. low thyroid not comfirmed by T3/TSH panel
                  4. Not maintained on anti-inflammatories

Talked to Dr. Martinez at Cumming Vet Clinic.

Charlie does not like being restrained and was muzzled but not sedated.

Overall in good condition, blood work from earlier this year is good for his age; painful in hips, right more than left. He weighed in at 88 lbs, down slightly from Feb.

Vet could not check teeth due to muzzle but recommends a dental in the near future.

Moving forward with a T3/TSH panel, putting him on Duramax for 14 days and then see how he is doing and doxycycline for the Ehrlichia since there is no evidence of treatment in the prior vet notes. Will also HW test since it has been almost 6 months since last test and no evidence of him being on preventative; will be started on hartgard. Likely some allergies from the condition of his skin, but again will wait to address.

Here are my notes from my call with John Kovacs on Sunday, March 21, 2021:

John is moving into his new home in September and hopes to have an ADT in the new home. Ideally, he’d like the dog to arrive once they’re in the house but if a dog becomes available, he can also take one prior to that as his apartment complex welcomes pets – up to 2 pets with both pets together weighing no more than 80 lbs. There are a number of people in the complex with dogs and they have a dog park.

When I asked why he was interested in an ADT, he told me he’d had Westies and he loves the terrier type. He is aware they can be chewers and will need to be watched and trained. They also want a friendly dog who can be a companion and good watch dog, as well as intelligent and trainable. He commented, “Dogs are people too” so he got points for that! Both he and his wife want a dog; he will be the primary caretaker but his wife is at home all day so when he is out, she will still be there. Should they both be traveling, they have friends with dogs, many of whom are home during the day, and they also have some good groomers and boarding facilities in the area. They have pet-sat their friends’ and neighbors’ dogs when those folks have been traveling.

They will chip the dog and work with a trainer.

We discussed DogFoodAdvisor.com – he was not familiar with it and I suggested it was a good place to research food.

In his application, he mentioned they have an interest in a puppy or young adult. I asked if they would consider a senior; they said they hadn’t really thought about it. If we have an older dog that would otherwise fit the requirements, and he is approved, it might be worth the phone call to ask if there is an interest.

Important note: Under A6, he replies to the question re: names/ages of frequent visitors, including children as N/A. However, in conversation, he told me that his wife babysits 1-4 year olds during the day. This is important information for us to know so it is a bit concerning that he would leave out this information on his app.

Reference: John did provide the name of a reference on the app but neglected to provide any contact information so I asked him for it. He told me he would send it right away but I never did receive it, either via email, text, or call. I asked if his reference knew I would be calling; he had not told him and said he would let him know. He then told me not to tell his reference that they were moving and to only ask questions regarding whether he and his wife would be qualified adopters in personality and temperament. He added that his sister didn’t even know they were moving and that he didn’t like people knowing his business. It seems somewhat surprising that after telling me he would reach out to his reference to alert the fellow to my call, and his fear of my saying something about them moving to his reference, that he would continue to forget to send me the reference’s contact info.

At this time, the team at Airedale Rescue does not feel good about moving forward with an adoption with you. Although the ATRA application completed that was forwarded to us did not specify and adoption fee, the Adoption Process on the ATRA website is clear that an adoption fee is charged.

Airedale Rescue Group is withdrawing the offer for you to adopt Padme. Airedale Rescue Group is closing your application to adopt.

We wish you all the best in finding a dog that meets your needs and you budget.

                              Sincerely,

I am at the vet with one of my dogs and I will send a draft agreement when I get home. Your application was forwarded to our group from another region and they do not have a statement about an adoption fee.

I need to stop at this point. First, I had no idea that there was an adoption fee.
Second, I did not know that a contract was involved nor it’s conditions.

If you can provide a copy of the contract I will look it over.
I am sure you understood my inquiries.

                                  Joe,

The current owner wrote the following when asked if Padme is crated when no one is home:

“She goes in her crate. She has always been crate trained and will just sit in her crate with the door open when we are home often.
She tends to get anxious when left alone outside of the crate. “

I spoke with the other directors and Airedale Rescue will reduce Padme’s adoption fee to $200 to assist with the cost of the upcoming vaccines in July.

I trust that will be agreeable.

Thank you for giving this girl a loving home.

                                  Sincerely,
                                  Pat Hairston
