Hi Mary,I grew up with Airedales and Sasha is my second adoption. We have a large fenced in yard and my kids are begging me to bring one more “terror” into the house 🙂 Honestly, Sammie sounds a lot like Sasha when we first brought her home. I would love to have a call with you. My home number is 704-844-1035 and cell is 704-654-8460. I am off work until 1/3.
Thank you,

Just a reminder that I have a leash reactive Airedale and he lives with 2 other male dogs and 2 females. So it can work.
Please let us know how your conversation goes.

Good morning, Teresa and Levi. We will be unable to consider you for adopting an Airedale for the following reasons:
* Your current canines are not altered.
* Your Airedale would spend its time “In a metal dog kennel/pen.” We require that our rescued Airedales be kept as inside pets and that they never be left alone outside in a kennel or pen or fenced yard when no one is home.
* Levi is unable to run after or lift a dog the size of an Airedale.
* You want your Airedale to be a therapy dog or service dog for the disabled. This is highly unlikely unless the Airedale began training as a pup. One of our directors and her husband founded a service-dog agency and have been training service dogs for 20+ years, so we speak from experience.
* You do not give an estimate of the annual cost of having an Airedale. See https://www.aspcapetinsurance.com/resources/dog-ownership-cost/.
* You have an electronic fence. Your Airedale might learn to respect an electronic fence; however, if it sees a deer, raccoon, or another critter, it will absolutely breach that fence and get zapped. They would hesitate to come back into the fence when the prey drive is not triggered. We appreciate your consideration of a rescued Airedale, but we will not be able to adopt to you.

So Sammie is not a fit because of the ‘puppy parties’. We have a surrender app supposed to be sent in tomorrow. It is the brother of Beth Mitchell’s dog that she posted about on the group. We will see.

Yes sir, I have checked in the local area. There are none available. I would be interested in adopting from your state if you have one than is in need of a forever home.

Robin-
We, ARG, completely understand your frustration. Rescues all over are having difficulty with adoptions for dogs that have special considerations. We recently received an adoption application from a couple in Virginia. In paper they look like it will be a good match for Patton. They specifically asked to adopt her. Our volunteer will do a phone interview then our colleagues in Virginia will do a home visit for us. If all is good we will approve their adoption and work on transport.
We greatly appreciate your patience and taking care of Patton for these many months.
Sincerely,
Pat

Dear Pat,
I hope your holiday preparations are going well. Chris forwarded your email to me; thank you for responding. My question is: is there a timeline for Patton? We have fostered her for seven months and cannot keep her indefinitely. It is increasingly difficult to keep Shiloh and Patton apart at all at times, not to mention having to navigate baby gates everywhere.
Chris and I would greatly appreciate an update when a plan is in place, if not before.
Thank you,
Robin
P.S. If it helps, Patton weighs 68 pounds, not 80.Sent from my iPad

Pat,
Despite the fact that Buddy has come a long way since arriving five weeks ago he does have a serious guarding issue.
He now walks beautifully on leash, waits for exits, readily crates , knows sit , down and place command and moves away from the food bowl until released . He is also rather calm natured and is wonderful at just relaxing and being with you . I have had no guarding issues with him when I am control of resources .
I have worked with the food guarding by requiring him to move away from the food (I him send to a place board) and waits for me to him release to his food. Originally he would bark, growl and lunge at you for his food. This has stopped .
However I have had two incidents in the past few days where he happened on some tossed food item . In the first incident he went to grab a tossed paper bag and I directed him away with a strong leash correction . He froze , snarled but ultimately moved away from the item and continued to walk with me. In the second incident he was not on leash . I went to pick up a plastic item from the ground that contained some food and he lunged and grabbed my arm . Fortunately I had on a heavy jacket so there was no breaking of skin.
These incidents were both unpredictable and his response was very immediate intense guarding behavior. They were also very unpredictable incidents in terms of what he chose to guard .Many times there have been things on the ground that he is interested in including dead things but he would readily move away from them when I said “let’s go” .
Although this behavior could be addressed with some intensive training of a highly reliable “out”, I don’t feel confident that I could in good conscious recommend him for adoption. I could see this resulting in a serious dog fight and most importantly inquiry to a child with something he chooses to claim.
Addressing this issue would require intensive training in conjunction with a very committed owner . This type of re-hab is generally not independent of the handler .
Your thoughts?
CindyDecember 9, 2022 at 11:56 pm in reply to: 2022-25 Buddy, 4 yr old, Intact, Horry Cty Animal Shelter, NOT DOG FRIENDLY #30017Hi Pat,
Buddy has been with me for just over three weeks. He has improved considerably as he has experienced a quieter more structured lifestyle.
He readily crates at night and enjoys an outdoor run or yard during the day. He offers a sit/wait and eye contact before any exits . He generally does well on a leash but will excite at squirrels etc. However he responds well to leash pressure and collar pressure without a melt down and fight as originally was the case for him.
He is able to play the “stationing game” with my three dogs present and nose-to-nose at a fence. From this I feel comfortable that he does not have aggressive intent toward other dogs. However he responds in kind to their energy. I have allowed him to interact directly with Grace as she is always calm and polite to other dogs. He is able to sniff her and walk off. He gets excited about Finn and Giddy (doxie) and gets vocal and anxious but can calm and take food quickly. I suspect he would be fine with another young , large dog that is comfortable and suited to mouthy hard-style play . I am sure he could easily injure a small or older dog.
His mouthiness with people as his go-to interaction has subsided as long as the person is calm in handling him. If you are animated he gets animated but not aggressive. He just does not have good “people skills” . However he enjoys just being with you and will curl up next to you and relax . He especially likes his head and neck massaged .
He seems to have no real interest in toy play suggesting this was not something he previously experienced. He would much rather root around in some dirt searching for critters and digging. He is a bit independent and aloof in that regard.
He does have a tendency to resource guard so have been addressing that issue. Originally he was very thin and the presence of food created stress so let that go for first couple of weeks. Now that he has gained some weight, I have worked on having he move away from me and wait before I offer food. Impulse control is his number one issue but have seen great improvement this week .
Currently trying to arrange to get him neutered. We recently lost our local spay, neuter clinic that was very affordable and did a great job. My current vet service requires wellness check and blood work before they will schedule a surgery for a new dog. Buddy does have current and complete vet records with exam info and I have discussed this with them but they will not budge – (Not especially pleased with them).I think Buddy would make a good companion to someone capable of handling an active dog and can provide outdoor stimulation. He will get bored and probably destructive if he were primarily a house dog. They would have to be very committed to holding him to task on manners and impulse control or he can easily be a difficult dog . He is however basically a very sweet natured dog with no true aggressive intent.
Cindy
