After giving Tootles a lot of thought and praying for guidance, I’ve decided he’s not the dog for me. I understand that his biting was likely a one time thing, but I don’t think I could with good conscience have him around visitors, adults or children.

I am still interested in Conway if he becomes available or any other dogs who may come into rescue. As long as they’re not eminently fatal, medical issues don’t frighten me.

Hi Suzanne, Jackie shared your note with Christina and me (Pat). Conway may have had a home identified. But I have Tootles who is 5 and really needs a home as long as there are no cats. He is closer to you near Birmingham AL. He does have chronic nasal disease and needs medications but National Airedale Rescue will reimburse the adopter for his medications. He previously lived with a smaller dog. Might you consider him. -Pat

Good afternoon Pat. How bad is Tootles’ nasal discharge? Andy, my Cocker, has mild allergies and a sometimes runny nose, but it’s not a problem at all. Do the medications keep Tootles fairly drip free?
I am interested in either boy, but I would like more info on Tootles before making a commitment.

Pat to Suzanne, the medications so far are keeping him drainage free. I think the best thing would be for me to connect you and Jamie, his foster, to talk. He is a good dog but needs someone who will understand and accept his quirks and behavioral needs. He is growly/grumbly but it is hard to determine what it is. It could be painful or just vocalization. He has to be muzzled for vetting and he hates his paws touched, so much so he bit Jamie’s hand the other day when she was wiping his paws. We connected Jamie to our trainer and the trainer gave her some specific things to work on with touch commands. Tootles loves to play with his toys and snuggle on his terms (when he wants it). I am going to email you and Jamie so you can connect. -pay

Thanks, Pat. I spoke with Jamie a little while ago. My only concern is the biting. She really believes it was a one off, but I asked for a few days to think about it. I’ve had 2 Airedales, a Wire Fox Terrier, and 5 Cockers, but none was a biter. Of those 8 dogs, 6 were rescues, so I do understand that they may have had less than loving experiences beforehand.

Suzanne: I’ll let you know my decision before the end of the week. Meanwhile, if Conway’s placement doesn’t work out, please let me know. I know he would be a good fit with his more laid back personality.

Pat to Suzanne, thanks so much. I do think it is a one-off. Jamie weaned him off Trazodone and then put him back on it. I think he is a dog that needs that type of assistance because of all he has been through. And ARG makes a commitment to assist with a trainer.

My understanding his Conway is wired for sound- crazy energy level and absolutely no training other than what foster mom is putting in. He is a work in progress. Thanks. Pat

7/4/21: From ARG Page PM: I’m Suzanne Sloan, an approved adopter, and am interested in adopting Conway. I believe that Jackie Cash told you about me. Although I live in Louisiana and am outside of your area, I am willing to drive to TN to pick up Conway or arrange his transport here. I have a large home and a large yard, both of which are dog friendly.

I previously had two Airedales and love the breed. I currently have a 45 lb. rescue Cocker Spaniel who is at least 12 years old. He gets along well with dogs of all sizes, is very laid back, and in excellent health.

Although none of my dogs has had heart worms, I am very familiar with the treatment because my best friend is very active in Basset rescue and has fostered several heart worm positive dogs.

I live alone, am active, and would love to give Conway the home he deserves.

Pat,

On another note I followed up with Sally Atherton after the nipping incident with Padme and Bob. She said they had made some suggested changes in their home and lifestyle that seemed to improve Padme’s attitude about Bob. They also contacted the local company I recommended . Unfortunately they do not have an opening until August but Sally was very impressed with them so signed up for their program. A behavioral trainer will come to their home and work in context .
Padme continues to be fine with everyone else she encounters including other dogs. The Atherton’s have house guests this week and Padme is fine with them as well as a house sitter they use. Sally is going to keep be posted on results with the trainer.

Pat,
I am not sure if you have been in contact with Sally Atherton lately but wanted to let you know she has contacted me about an issue with Padme.
She originally contacted me about a month ago saying Padme barked at Bob when he entered a room. I talked her through a few things as I felt Padme was guarding her as “primary caregiver”. I wanted Bob more involved with the walking and feeding.
I noted to her that Padme immediately attached to my husband and that her original owner was a man so did not think this was a general discomfort with men.
She called me again today and said that Padme nipped at Bob last night and that actually Padme had not liked Bob from day one.
However Sally says Padme is fine with other guests in the home including a women that has come into check on her when Atherton’s have to be away. Sally says she is also fine with the neighbors as well as a group she joins for dog walks.
I still think their is an element of guarding going on but Padme may also detect something about Bob that is discomforting to her.
I can walk them through a number of things I typically do when clients contact me about similar issues but think they would be best served by having someone work with them in person and possibly in their home to get the best picture of the issue. I gave her the contact info for Bark Busters as a my recommendation for someone local that does behavioral consult and training. Sally is very attached to Padme and seems very committed to trying to work through this issue. However she says this is very upsetting for Bob.

Pat,
I did speak to Jamie last night . It does seem Tootles is very conflicted about touch in general . I have asked for a little more info and possibly some videos on the growling.
Would like to understand the context to possibly address this issue. Difficult to understand and make good decisions with a dog that communicates both excitement and warning with a growl.
She has been a good foster mom for him so understandably upset about the bite.
I sent her via email some info on cooperative handling and conditioning paw touch. I also sent info on fitting and conditioning a muzzle to be safe when cleaning his paws and for her to be more comfortable with trying to condition a paw touch or hold.
It sounds like the cat situation just creates too much stress and excitement for Tootles as well.

Unfortunately I got bit by Tootles this morning, wiping off his wet feet when he came in today. Around the thumb area. It’s not bad, pics attached, but could use some guidance on next steps with him. I suppose the vet warned me about this.

Christina and I are working hard to identify a new home for Tootles. This includes sending his info to new applicants that have had an interview but not yet a home visit. We will work in a foster home for him, I promise.

I do understand and this has taken far longer than expected. I am hearing rumbling in the general rescue world of a slow down of adoptions and fosters with people traveling.

We will get this done and find him a home.

My little 5lb tea cup poodle is having those issues right now ….. at least his nose quit bleeding They are trying him on Temaril right now

How old is he ? Is he going out adopted or on a foster contract ?
If he is adopted, with this condition being known, I have one set of funds for that; if he is on foster with ongoing medical, I have another set of funds for that. 🙂

Hi Pat,

Tootles is doing great – I did put him back on 50mg Traz a day, he goes in and out of growling and I can’t figure out why, so I think it helps.

I know you’d come to me with any news, and I think I thought he’d get a home sooner than later… With him being so obsessed with the cats, as much as I love him and he trusts me, I think it’s best to have him move on. If he isn’t adopted in July, can we try to identify another long term foster? I don’t want him to have so much change, but I’m worried about putting him in boarding for 9 days, and I honestly didn’t think I’d have him this long.

Let me know your thoughts.

Pat, I had a good conversation with Joe Baptista.

It’s been years since they had a pet since they spent the last 7 years before moving into their house sailing around the Caribbean/Latin America. They have a personal friend who is a vet, although not in the area, she has a friend she went to vet school whom she recommended and is now in the area.

I asked him to tell me about the Airedale they used to watch and there were clearly very fond memories of this ADT and his personality.
He is on social media so I suggested he add that to the list of steps to take to reunite with the dog should anything happen and it gets lost.
Re: training, they do plan on training. Since it’s hard to know the background of trainers with big box stores like PetSmart, I advised them to be sure to look for signs of positive training.

I asked if he remembered what Flea/Tick/HW he used in the past and it was Advantix.

They are looking for a younger dog, Doesn’t have to be a puppy but preferably no much older than 3-4. He feels once they hit 5-6, bad habits may be too ingrained to easily relearn.

I’ve checked Google Earth and they do indeed have a chain link fence. Additionally, there is a nice park a block or two away, with what looks like a decent sized grassy dog yard.

I suggest we move them on to Home Visit stage.
