to ARGIf you guys want to keep the dog in foster with your rescue, I believe that will be fine. If you cannot continue to find a foster, someone must bring her in by appointment to our surrender desk. Ms. Diane stated she may not be able to keep long due to potential surgery, if this is the case she can call and set a surrender date if necessary. I will email you back with an account number for them to be able to attach it to. We usually hold the animal for up to 30 days before placing for adoption. The surrender number is our main number with option 6.

Good morning Pat,
Thank you for reaching out. By puppy, I really just mean an airdale on the younger side. We would be happy with one that is two, three, four years old. And although I don’t think it was mentioned anywhere on the application, we are also amenable to a mixed dale.
Yes, please proceed with the application, and let me know if you have additional questions. Thanks again!

Hello Kristy,
Thank you for applying to Airedale Rescue Group. Before I assign a reviewer I see you are seeking a puppy. It is rare when the rescue receives puppies. The last litter of pups we took in was in 2021. We sometimes get pups between 5 months to a year but that too does not always occur.
If you have your heart set on a puppy, then I suggest you research breeders to see if anyone has a litter or one upcoming.
Please let me know if you would like us to proceed.
Grateful,
Pat Hairston

They have a fenced yard and are “dog people”. They have had numerous dogs in the past but are currently dogless. They would prefer a young to middle aged dog and are willing to put the work in for a dog that has a rescue background. They do not care about the sex of the dog. I spoke with both of them and they are excited to get a new fur baby. I did get a good feeling from them.
Move forward with HV.

to me, ChristinaHi Pat,
Dorothy has been here one month now. No meds for last three weeks so feel I am seeing the real girl. I find her to be a pretty typical Airedale on the higher drive side. Much of the things that I suspect have made her a challenging dog , I can say are the same things that make my 20 month old male Airedale challenging as well.
And in the case of my fella Burl I was looking for a puppy that tended toward higher .
Dorthy is quite bold , independent, and very food and toy motivated . She does readily get over-aroused when she is confined by crate, pen or tight leash in the presence of other dogs . But it is out of frustration at wanting to get to the dog. The transitional leash (now called Heather’s Hero’s Side Kick) works very well to keep her out of that over-excited state of mind when on leash or entering a pen with an adjoining dog. Once the excitement of entering or exciting is addressed she is perfectly calm with the other dogs.
Her mouthiness has improved with showing her she only gets treats or touch when she moves away from your hand. Also lots of calm massaging touch and conditioning to handling all parts of her body has reduced the habit of grabbing your hands with her mouth.
I have worked on teaching her the game of fetch which she loves and she very much needs an interactive game to direct her energy and learn to engage with a person .
Also working on “out” command to teach a little respect with that mouth such that fetch or tug are safe.
Grooming – Dorothy has become pretty good about being brushed and generally enjoys the handling. However I tried to give her a haircut and she definitely does not like the clippers and snaps and bites at the clippers . I could get her body done but not face and ears . However I think with some regular exposure using lots of treats , she will adapt to the sound of the clippers around her head.
Her nails are a different story . They are horribly grown out such that they impact her posture . Even using a muzzle will be too stressful for both me and Dorothy. I have to board the dogs August 8,9 and 10 as Bruce is having surgery in Charleston. They will be boarded at my vet and they are going to sedate her and clip her nails. As they are so grown out it will probably take several visits to work the quick back to a normal place.
Additionally the sedative maybe a good thing while she is boarding as she will be stressed and over-aroused about confinement with so many new dogs in close proximity. Hopefully she won’t regress too much from all the progress made to date.In general she is a great, high-energy dog. She is happy to walk for miles and loves to explore. She is very smart and readily learns and patterns new behaviors. So best to show Dorothy all the things you want her to do or she will find her own entertainment such as digging, barking, and lunging . I would say she needs a very active home and lifestyle that includes a dog (not long days of confinement with minimal stimulation). She is best suited to a home with no small children or cats/critters. And I suspect in most circumstances she is best as an only dog. She can be fine with a dog that matches her tough, rough style but would that require someone that is very savvy in managing dogs to keep over-arousal from flipping to fight.
Hope her special person is out there. She is a sweet , fun girl!
Cindy
