to infoHello,
I’m going to be completely honest of where I am in the process. I don’t want to give Benji up. I feel like Benji and I’s personality is very similar which is why it’s really hard for me to rehome him. Since last we spoke, I brought both of them inside and they no longer spend any time chained up outside. They roam free inside the home and do a pretty good job. The issue I am having is that I can’t offer them a fenced-in yard right now and it will be a while before I can enroll them in obedience classes. Going on long walks is not the same as running freely and we can’t always go to a dog park. I also feel that we would not be as overwhelmed if it were just Benji, but finding a home for our Husky, Ki, has not been easy. My husband is also allergic to the Husky’s hair, which is why it’s much harder. I’m torn between keeping Benji, continuing to improve, and waiting to rehome our other dog or giving him to them since they are already equipped to give him a better home now. The last thing I want is to rob him of the best life, but I know I can give him a better life, it’s just going to take some time for me to get there. So I’m just really contemplating back and forth between that because I don’t want to rob him of all of the bells and whistles. I just want to make the right choice. But it will be empty without Benji…
Thanks for your patience and understanding. I really do appreciate your help throughout this entire process.

to AriiHello Ari,
The couple is still interested in giving Benji a home.
Has there been any changes since you completed the surrender form?
When would be a good time to arrange transport?
Thank you.

to Arii, Christina, JackieAri,
I can understand having second thoughts. I will let the adopter know.
If you are set on keeping him and giving Benji a chance, I recommend investing time and money in obedience classes with Benji. Just like children, a dog needs boundaries, guidance (training), and love to thrive. And they need to be a part of the family. The more you integrate the dog into the family and the activities the better the relationship you will have with your dogs. Please know that we find great homes for dogs needing to be rehomed that give the best possible life for the dog. A dog that is kenneled for long periods of time, soiling his kennel, and being chained outside with a dog house, is not providing all Benji needs to be a thriving Airedale. He needs a lot of play, training in obedience, interaction with the family, love, and attention.
While I did not find a trainer in Candor, there are trainers that are nearby. You want to look for a positive reward trainer who wants to help you build a relationship with your dog.

Benji is sweet, timid of thunderstorms, and does not like the vacuum. Over powers their toddler as he does not know his own space. He loves being brushed, does well getting a bath and having his nails trimmed. Has not been groomed because she is concerned about scaring him.
He does pull on leash, but likely correctable.
Home trained however, if left in his crate too long, he will poop in the crate. (I got the feeling he is crated way too long).
He is not on any HW prevention, although tested negative for HW. They use 7-way dewormer from Petco.

to me, Christina, JackieHi Pat,
Well after a rough start Monday evening and Tuesday morning we have made some very good progress.
Cecilia told me that Monday he had to be taken out with a catch pole , was given rabies vaccination put in a crate and loaded in her car. So understandable that he arrived in flight/fright mode and was snarly about being approached.
I did have help from my trusty assistant (husband) to handle him the first day as his number one priority was to get loose and run. Buddy had no hesitation about using his mouth as well as getting up on you with his paws to push away.
He has relaxed tremendously from just two days of quiet and calm . Have waited him out until he settles before any handling or movement . Today I have been able to get him out fairly easily and walk multiple times .
He is not in great shape. He is skeleton thin, horribly matted on back half of his body , had terrible diarrhea the first day and reeks of urine (all the hair mats must have gotten soaked in urine) . But eight months in a county animal shelter is very rough . Seems the rural county shelters are just the worst places. Very glad Cecilia contacted ARG.
Today I was able to give him an overall body check and he let me know when I stopped that he was not ready for the “nice massage” to end . He also let me give him a good warm water rinse down. He is so matted on his back side that I think he will need to be shaved down. After he has settled in some more I am going to try to do this myself to avoid the stress of a trip to a groomer.
So really impressed with Buddy and have no doubt he can be a very sweet boy . ‘Manners class” will commence when he is comfortable in his new surroundings.Cindy

to mePat,
Cecilia and a co-worker brought Buddy this evening. He is a snarly boy and challenging to handle . He has clearly had no boundaries.
Will just be working on a strict routine and getting him acclimated to new place, new people .
He is also intact so that will need to be addressed as soon as I am able to work that out with vet. According to his records he has been sedated for any close handling. They apparently had a challenge today giving his rabies vaccination. I will probably muzzle condition him before trying to get to vet. His records say no bite history to date so would like to keep it that way. Will keep you posted as he settles and I can get an assessment on him,

to meGood morning.
Buddy had a negative fecal in May. No testing since then as he hasn’t had any issues.
They will be giving him a rabies vaccine today. I will email you copies of the updated records once done. Cindy will be receiving a hard copy of all records, as well as his rabies tag.Thank you for any and all help in saving these animals!

to me, Jackie, ChristinaPat,
It has been a beautiful week at Edisto Island and fortunately this area was untouched by the recent hurricane.
I can take Buddy. We aren’t returning home until late afternoon Sunday the 9th so they can bring him that evening or Monday morning.
We will definitely prepare to keep him secured from the other dogs , use great caution and use a muzzle if needed initially . Both of my dales spent this past week at the vet and both had growths removed that were becoming an issue as they have aged . So they are on restricted activity until stitches heal.
I suspect it will take a while for Buddy to decompress from the shelter experience such that I can get a handle on his needs or issues and what will need to be addressed to make him adoptable . It is not surprising to have unchecked prey drive in an Airedale result in damage to small dogs or cats. Will see how much we can adjust that mindset.
He will not be the first one I have taken that was cautious or stranger selective so I will take it slow in the beginning ( Huey/Chewie and Teddy were in that category) . It is a good sign that there are shelter staff members that are good with him.Cindy

Just another note. Cecilia Chapman, Cell (843) 798-9982 is willing to transport Buddy to you Cindy with one of the people who regularly take care of Buddy. He was held since February due to a dangerous dog case that was recently settled when the review deemed him not a dangerous dog as he has not attacked or bitten people. The shelter has limited contact with other dogs. He warms up slowly to new people so there are a few of the staff that has cared for him. Cecilia is willing to arrange with his one care giver to ride with her to bring him to Florence, preferably early evening.

to Cynthia, Jackie, ChristinaHi Cindy –
We hope your time away has been wonderful.
We were planning on having you take Sammie, one of the previously adopted Airedale (April 2021) that is coming back to us as she is reactive on leash and has a high prey drive. However, we think we can find a home for her with a fenced yard.
There is a male Airedale in Horry County we were contacted about by Cicilia Chapman, the rescue Coordinator, she writes “Buddy is a special case. He has been at our shelter since February. He kept getting away from his owner and wound up killing a couple of the neighbor’s small dogs. It does take him a while to warm up to new people, but once he does he is sweet. I have no idea if he has ever been around children or not. With the proper caution, he should do OK. Several of my staff members are very attached to him and spend as much time as they can with him. He can be really nippy when he doesn’t get his way or is scared, so I have to urge caution. He is very headstrong (of course) but I think proper training with experienced handlers will help him immensely. We do not have a behaviorist on staff, But Tierney with Best Friends spent some time at our shelter, and she had taken buddy out while she was there. She feels with proper training that he could be turned around.”
They do not have a behaviorist that works with them. Therefore he has not had a good evaluation. He is being held for us until October 9 and we need to make arrangements for him.
We hoped you would be able to take him even though I know you have a small dog.
Please let me know so I can advise the shelter and have Christina help arrange transport.
Thanks much. Pat
