12/14/23 text from Gina “ Good Evening Pat, my name is Gina Fox. I am able to help with Duncan as a foster. My application was submitted in October, however it has not been approved yet. I believe I am only missing the home check?. I’m about 2 hours from Columbia. I live in the Salisbury, NC area. Let me know if I may assist.
My reply: Hi Gina. I think we were having a hard time finding someone to home visit. I am sorry we have been so delayed. Let me talk with Jackie and Christina. Thank you.
He is going to take quite a bit of care. Tender Loving Care sounds like a big part. Both volunteers sad he is sweet.
Gina: He looks like a sweetheart 💕! Poor thang! Yeah, my timing wasnt great either with the holidays. I ended up putting a deposit down on a puppy, but he’s not due to be born until January. I’d be more than happy to help this sweet boy and help him get the home he deserves ❤️

to ARGHi,
I am an approved adopter in Columbia, SC and we are interested in fostering/adopting Kenai.
He seems like a great boy from the description, do you have any idea why he is being rehomed?
Thanks,

to cgreendr, me
Hi Cindy,Thank you for all of this helpful information!
I am so happy that Boone is used to some raw diet along with his kibble and look forward to continuing a healthy diet for him (one of my personal passions).
– Are you currently feeding him from elevated bowls? Would you recommend a slow feeding dish for him since you mentioned that he’s got a voracious appetite? I would like to continue to use something similar to your feeding set up to help him with his transition.
– You had mentioned the Nutro Gold supplement – is he currently on any other supplements? We’ve just ordered a 42 inch crate so I’m glad it lines up to the size he’s currently using. Does he have any anxiety while in his crate if he doesn’t see/hear people, or is he quite content to be by himself in a quiet place in his crate during rest times? Also, how long is he usually in his crate overnight (in case he has an active bladder/bowels)?
The lead and collar you have mentioned were not around when we trained our pups, so I am very interested in learning about this method from you next weekend. This method seems to be such an improvement from the traditional choke chain training methods from 20 years ago, which I felt didn’t align well with our terrier’s mindsets and tendencies. Very insightful videos- thanks for sharing and we can’t wait to practice these techniques with Boone!
Thanks and I hope you all have a great weekend!

to Christine, meChristine,
Below are some details on Boone to help you prepare for his arrival .Feeding
Feed morning and evening
Morning – 2.75 cups Taste of the Wild – Salmon with Ancient Grains
Evening meal – home prepared meal . I rotate proteins between venison , beef , Turkey and sometimes Mackeral . I make a gravy from warm water and Nupro Gold supplement. Boone has shown no food sensitivities or issues . He has a voracious appetite.
I understand you are familiar with homemade feeding so won’t provide details and sources unless you would like this info. I would be happy to provide sources . He gets ~ 1/2 pound meat.
I adjust my dogs meals based on activity level and time of year (less in mid-summer when they rest most of the day in air conditioning vs. winter when they love to be out And active) .
Sleeping/resting
Boone sleeps in a 42 inch crate with bolster bed. I also have crated him a few hours mid day during the first 10 days of each of the three portions of his Heartworm treatment.
Boone originally compulsively spun and paced and did not know how to relax himself. This made it very difficult to keep weight on him . It also kept him in an anxious state of mind which is unhealthy. I think this behavior developed from extended periods of confinement and boredom. I know you will make best decision on sleeping arrangements for him for your life style but he may struggle early on to relax in new environment if not confined. He gets a special treat when he crates so he also is compulsive about crating .
Exercise
He very much enjoys a walk and being outdoors where he can sniff, affection via calm petting and brushing and he is obsessed with his Goughnut ring (I limit that as well to prevent obsessive behaviors) .
Walking
I use a pressure and release technique for walking which Boone understands and I will demonstrate in person . I will provide the specific leash that I use and I have included a link to a website with info and video for your reference.
I also use a flat martingale collar (also pressure and release ) and I will provide the collar . He will have a flat stainless tag on his collar with all of my contact info. I suggest you keep this tag and return to me via mail after you have obtained a tag with your contact info in case of emergency.
Walking a big, powerful dog may prove a challenge for you in the beginning so I want to help you learn these skills .
I suggest for the first couple of weeks you practice within the confines of your home/fenced yard. He needs to learn you are his new person and where he lives before venturing out in the world. We have plenty of incidents of newly adopted ARG dogs getting away from new owners in a panic .

Please do stay in touch and I am glad to provide support .
Looking forward to “gotcha” day!

to cgreendr, meHi Cindy,
How about a meet up in Southern Pines next Saturday (12/16)? There’s a Hampton Inn and Suites at 200 Columbus Dr, Aberdeen, NC – from Google maps there appears to be a few quiet grassy areas on the property where you could show us some of the commands/behaviors you’ve been working with him on. Does 1 PM work for you?
If you don’t mind, I would like to keep our conversation going afterwards to keep you and Pat updated on Boone once he lands in NC 😀.
We are looking very forward to making Boone the happiest boy! See you next Saturday and thanks again,
Christine Sorrell

to Christine, meForwarding Boone’s current records from my vet. He will be due for annual vaccinations in March and should have a 6 month follow up heartworm test at the end of May.
Our vet records are in my husbands name Bruce Martin .
I also had the first adopters do a fecal test prior to me taking him in August . It was clear.
Note I have no record of microchip number although on one of previous vet records, “yes” for microchip is checked.
Will send older records via scan.

to me, ChristinePat, Christine ,
This is wonderful news ! After meeting Christine and Chad via phone call yesterday I have no doubt they will be committed to providing the best possible home for Boone.
I am so happy for him to become someone’s special boy !
I will follow up this week with an email to include scanned copies of all records , details of his current routine and some suggestions on transitioning him to a new home. We can also discuss best timing for the move. As we are only about 3 hours apart we could possibly work out a day to meet half way so don’t have to work with volunteer schedules for transport.
I would like to have him here for the 10 days or so just to make sure he does well following final injections and if I have any concerns then my vet would see him promptly. However except for the two shaved squares on his spine you would not know he had undergone any treatment .Very happy for Boone!

to Cindy2, meHi Pat and Cindy,
After talking to Cindy yesterday, Chad and I are still interested in adopting Boone and providing the best for him for the rest of his life – if you believe we would be a good fit for him.
This being said, we need a couple of weeks to adequately prepare our home for him. We also understand that he needs to take it easy for the next month or so after his last heartworm treatment, and that setting up transportation during the holidays might take some time as well. We would like to move forward organically in this process to allow for the most stress-free transition for everyone involved, and we certainly don’t want to rush things during the process.
Cindy it was such a pleasure to speak to you yesterday and you and Pat are a true gift to the dog community! If we are the right fit, I would of course like to perform a “data transfer” with details of Boone’s care with you to ensure that we continue and move forward with the hard work you’ve done so far.
Thank you,
Christine Sorrell

to me, info@airedalerescuegroup.com, airedalemail@comcast.net, ralphsimpsonnc@gmail.comhi Ralph – Boone is planning to go to his new home next week so Boone is not available for adoption. I was really happy to see your name pop into my mail as I know you and Mark were great Aire-parents! Are you still at the same address as when you adopted Mick. Are you looking for a middle aged ‘dale? We may have one coming in who is age 6 as a family surrender. I will find out more about him soon. Do you prefer a male ‘dale? Thanks so much for your input on what you’re looking for.
