to infoThank you!
We do not have a behaviorist on staff, But Tierney with Best Friends spent some time at our shelter, and she had taken buddy out while she was there. She feels with proper training that he could be turned around.Thank you for any and all help in saving these animals!

Cecilia,
I will get that done today.
Has Buddy been assessed by a behavioral trainer? Is he recoverable?
We would tag him no children, no dogs. High prey drive, escape artist.
Thanks.

to infoHello Pat,
Thank you so much for reaching out!
Yes, Ian is starting to hit us with the strong winds now. Thank goodness our shelter is secure!Buddy is a special case. He has been at our shelter since February.
He kept getting away from his owner, and wound up killing a couple of the neighbors small dogs.
It does take him a while to warm up to new people, but once he does he is sweet. I have no idea if he has ever been around children or not. With the proper caution, he should do OK. Several of my staff members are very attached to him, and spend as much time as they can with him. He can be really nippy when he doesn’t get his way or is scared, so I have to urge caution.
He is very headstrong (of course) but I think proper training with experienced handlers will help him immensely.I have attached our rescue application for you. Once you get that back to me with the requested documentation (thank you for sending the 501 C3 already!) we can start the approval process. It does not take very long at all. Once that is done, we can arrange for picking up.
Thank you for any and all help in saving these animals!

Hi Pat ! I’m drooling She sounds so wonderful…. but as you know we “most likely” will not have another Airedale . Our Cameron is nearing the end .. we’ll be at the vet tomorrow for a rabies shot but it probably will turn out not to be necessary.. This is as difficult as they all are. I’m glad you have me on your mailing list all of these guys in homes, or looking for them brings a smile to me as I’m sure you’ll find her perfect home… Her description reminds me of our Molly the hunter … it’s funny how they take on traits … Anyway just thought I’d drop a line let me know how things go and I will too .. Sharon
moved to ‘waiting for spare dale. Interest in Sammie as it may be Cameron’s time.

to meHi, Pat –
Thanks for the email. We had a crazy week last week and we are still playing catch up.
I completed the online form. I didn’t put in the vet details, as we are going next week for her shots and a once over. I will get a copy of her records and share them with you as soon as they are ready.
Also, I attached a photo file format that the website doesn’t accept and it wouldn’t let me remove it so there are additional images below. Feel free to use one or all of them as you like.

to me, KellyHi, ladies.
This is the email we have worked so hard to avoid. We are heartbroken to say that we need some support to find Sammie a new home.
She is a very sweet dog and we love her beyond compare. The main challenge is that she has an extremely high prey drive that we cannot break or continue to overlook. We have tried a multitude of things from training, exercise, and maintaining a consistent environment but she continues to be highly driven. Her strength makes it a struggle to manage her while also maintaining safety for everyone involved. We have to be on constant alert to ensure that we see what’s in the area around her to make sure she isn’t going to lunge and drag you along for the ride.
We can’t take her for walks around other dogs. Ever. No public parks or open areas, no passing other dogs on our street, and we cannot have any other dogs on our property. There is a small dog across the street from our house that Sammie is constantly looking for anytime we exit the front of our house. We are afraid that she is going to attack the other dog if given the chance.
While we don’t have all of the details of her previous life, the fact that she lived with other dogs is hard to believe. We know that it’s true, but we are still befuddled.
We keep her on a leash most of the day and use a martingale collar, per the trainers directions. We do not use a pinch collar, as per the agreement, and we find a pinch collar to be extreme. When being held or redirected, Sammie will let you pull her up by the collar and still will not hesitate until she starts to choke. Strong and stubborn are her superpowers.
We also have a reinforced gentle leader for when we have her out in public areas or we are taking her to the vet. The vet schedules time when they don’t have other pets in the lobby or bring her in another door so we can avoid the chaos of Sammie seeing other animals.
There are so many positives about Sammie.
– She is loyal to her humans and wants to do well
– She is caring and follows her people everywhere
– She has manners when it comes to sit, stay, wait, down, waiting to be released for her food, and heel. She knows how to heel but is a stubborn and strong hunter that gets easily distracted. Distractions vary from leaves, frogs, sticks, bees, squirrels, chipmunks, wind, humans, and of course dogs and cats.
– She is protective of her home and her people
– She will greet visitors and settle pretty quickly once they are inside our home
– She gets rambunctious with kids but easily tolerates loud noises, loud kids, lots of kids coming at her to pet her and get attention. She has to be on a leash and reminded not to jump and to go easy because she thinks she is a small dog
– She is house trained and goes potty when walked or taken out into the yard. She does not bark at the door to be let out so we keep her on a solid routine
– She is a excellent car rider who loves to have the wind in her face and to smell all of the smells
– She loves a good pup cup
– She can be left alone in the house and will nap in her bed without disturbing things. Initially, she would chew a kid toy when they were left out. We are now careful to make sure she doesn’t have the opportunity and keep things out of her each
– She loves her toys and carries her favorite toy of the day around the house
– She sleeps through the night and will come to wake you up if she must go potty before her regular wake-up time
– She does well with being groomed and tolerates the full routine. She is a bit sensitive about her feet and will let you know when overstepping her comfort zone
– She does well getting her ears cleaned and getting her teeth brushed
– We bathe her in between grooming appointments and while baths are not her favorite, she does enjoy the attentionWe have struggled with some moments where Sammie’s behavior was too rough or difficult. She would knock the kids over or use her teeth on them, playfully, but rough. We solved that with making sure the kids are standing up when playing with her so they are dominant and work to maintain their position as the Alpha.
We headed to a cabin this week. It was a space that was ample and spacious with three separate floors. Sammie had her routines and enjoyed the time. We took her for a hike and it was decent, until we encountered a falling leaf, people, or any other animals.
Our older daughter brought her dog along – a small (6lb) Dachshund. She was kept in a room/area away from Sammie’s space and access. Last evening when our daughter was walking out of the area with the dog in her arms to take it potty, Sammie lunged and in a split second attacked. She was able to jump and grab the dog by it’s rear haunch and caused a significant puncture wound. The dog is ok, but had to be taken to UT emergency vet center. They had to sedate her, clear the wound, add a drain, and stitch the area back up. It was all clearly an accident but in a single moment of letting our guard down, our worst fears were realized. We can’t risk the possibility of injury to Sammie or another pet/person as a result of her instinct.
We are traveling home today but we can schedule time to connect in the coming days and work on a plan. We want to do what is best for Sammie and find a home that will give her boundaries and space to be her best self. We understand that takes time and we will work together in the process.
In the interim, we will ensure that Sammie is current on her vaccines and has a check from the vet so she has a clean bill of health. When we find a new place that fits Sammie’s needs, we will send her with all of her food, treats, and accessories so it is as seamless as possible.
Please let me know when you have time to connect.
Thank you –

Thank you for submitting an adoption application for a SOAR rescue Airedale. Have you also contacted your local Tennessee Airedale rescue organization – ARG – Airedale Rescue Group? They can assist you in the approval process and make you aware of any dogs they have available. I have copied their TN state coordinator on this email. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me any time.
Again, thank you for applying and good luck with your search.

Well, that was an emotional roller coaster. After alot of waiting and 3 days back and forth about another couple, she ended up letting her go to a completely different family.
I appreciate all of your help. I am going to look at Airedale puppies in Kentucky on Thursday afternoon. If you ever need help fostering a rescue in this area, please let me know.
I thanked him and wished him luck.

September 20, 2022 at 9:45 pm in reply to: 2022-15 Patton, 4-y-o Female-Spayed, Mt. Pleasant SC-No other dogs #2979407-09-22 From Chris & Robin:
Pat, sorry to take so long to get back to you. Though Patton has a few quirks (I have never seen an Airedale shed like she does, which causes some allergy problems here we had to investigate), we’d like to make her a permanent member of the family. She still definitely needs a serious behavioral training effort because of her aggression toward other dogs on leads (not so much dogs in yards, which may mean she had some bad experience on a walk) so we will take ARG up on the offer to provide $250 toward training. We’ve gotten her shots up to date and bought a supply of flea and tick for her, pretty sure she has had her parvo shot but want to make sure of that with the new variant in Michigan. She and Shiloh still get along well, with the occasional dust up. I can guarantee you that with both of these girls around nobody will ever try breaking in here-I am surprised you can’t hear them up in North Carolina.I do worry a bit about my age and making sure I can take care of Patton in the future, but I am in good shape for now, thanks to Shiloh and Patton. It is always good to know ARG is there if something should happen.
Best, Chris and Robin Colman

to meI apologize it has taken me a bit to get back to you. Alice sounds like a lovely dog, but I am concerned that she has never been crated and we still do not have a fence up for her. I dont think we are the right home for her at this time. I really appreciate you considering us. –“

to mholycross, Christina, JackieHello Matt,
Alice is a 3 YR Old female Airedale rescued off Craigslist when still a pup that still needed to be bottle fed. She is sweet, loving and cuddly. Alice enjoys sleeping with her people in bed, She has lived on a farm and was trained to watch over her fowl (chickens), she loves children and babies and lives with a 9 and 11 yr old, good with their barn cats, house trained, good in house when left alone, loves to watch the Waltons and Secret Lives of Pets. She loves car rides and hiking.
She is not good with very small yappy dogs (Chihuahua) that bark in her face but does well with medium dogs and enjoys the company of a standard poodle.Alice does have some anxiety with changes and will act out by chewing paper, destroy a book or magazine. She is a typical Airedale and likes to counter surf. Alice has never been crate trained.
Show is up to date dates vaccines, spayed, 70 pounds, and ARG will obtain her vet records. She is currently eating Purina ProPlan lamb and rice. Alice is being surrendered because her owner has a terminal illness.
We feel with her qualities she may be a good fit for your family. Please give some thought to Alice joining your family and let us know if you are interested.
