        ON HOLD:

I reached out to Susan via email to schedule a time to speak on the phone. She replied that they had decided to “hold off for the time being. We just think that three ‘dales may be too much and i’ve set the balance of our other two. The female in Vermont was of interest because she was trained on the invisible fence as all my dogs have been, but as interested as I am, I think for our other dogs at this point, we will have to give her a miss. down the road.. keep us on your list…”

Since we don’t know their timing, I suggest we keep them on the list and let her reach out to us when they are ready. Once they do, we can re-initiate phone interview and HV.

          to Delilah, ARG

Good afternoon, Delilah. Yesterday got away from me, but I wanted to send this so you have all of my info in one place. I enjoyed talking to you and learning about Daisy–she sounds like a perfect Aire-girl–and Clyde, who sounds like a sweetheart of a little basset-mix boy. He certainly is a lucky boy for you to have taken him in after he was dumped.

I spoke to your vet’s office and they gave you a good reference and could think of no reason that you should not be allowed to adopt an Airedale. I left a call to your neighbor Kate and will also call your other reference Kari. Then I will find a volunteer who lives near you to conduct your home visit.

I’ll be in touch as we progress. Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

          Happy New Year!

Subject: Re: ARG terrible home visit.

Kelly, Flippers are people who adopt dogs from shelters inexpensively or adopt dogs from people who advertise “free to good home,” then turn around and sell them. Whether these folks are or not, I don’t know; but their paper application and their interview and their home visit do not jibe. I have emailed Greenville SC Humane Society and Greenville SC animal control shelter and Golden Retriever Rescue in Greenville to warn them about these folks.

In my ARG experience, I have bought Airedales from, I believe, 2 flippers but didn’t realize it until it was too late. Then, of course, I wanted to get the dogs because I didn’t want them to go to just anyone. One woman had posted on Craigslist that she needed to rehome a female Airedale, I forget the details, but she needed $500 as a rehoming fee. I got her to accept $400. It turns out one of our other volunteers recognized the dog from a previous “free to a good home” ad in the area. So, the woman who we dealt with had gotten that Airedale free then turned around and sold her to us. People do that with shelters all the time with purebreds or dogs that look to be purebreds.

As Seinfeld said, “People! They’re the worst!”

              Hi all.

Just want to let you know that Jessica Johnson and Greg Porter have been moved to “cold day in hell.” The entire home visit write up is on their forum. I just feel awful that Emily Cook and her husband had this experience as their 1st home visit. It can only get better, right?!

                7/17/24 update from Cindy Green.

                Hi Pat,
Continued work with Dorothy reveals a primary issue.
I believe Dorothy has a type of barrier frustration/entrapment/fear reactivity.
If Dorothy is confined by crate , kennel/run or on tight leash and a dog approaches directly she reacts with lunging and barking. The degree of her initial reaction is dependent on her perception of threat from that specific dog . I suspect others have interpreted this as aggression towards dogs.
I can see how this would pose a huge challenge when trying to crate her with other dogs in the immediate area/home.
I currently crate her separate from the other dogs and at no time do I allow my dogs to approach her in a crate . She loves her crate and is a bit of a sleepy head . I suspect is is what she knows from spending a lot of crate time in her past . Perhaps her early exposures to other dogs were from her crate so created bad feelings .

To try an address and understand her issues,
I have practiced multiple scenarios outside using my outdoor runs (5 X 10) so she has more space to move away than crate. In the initial attempts with her in a run and my older male approaching (attempting to greet on his part) she barked and lunged insanely until she was really worked up and drooling .
She would also react to my young male but with less intensity. So I began some counter conditioning exercises using just my young male Burl . I used food (she is a major chow hound) and sending to place (she knows place from previous training) to teach her to a “move away” from perceived threat. As of now she is able to remain calm with being approached about 90% of the time. Oddly once I have walked Burl in to the run next her such that they are side by side she is perfectly relaxed. I am able to feed them side by side and nose to nose.
Conversely if Burl is in the run and I walk her up to him on loose leash she does not react. I gather in this scenario she does not feel entrapped.

She is still not comfortable with my older male Finn approaching her while she is confined. Seems she is holding those bad feelings from initial introduction. But when I reverse with Finn in run and Dorothy approaching she is able to walk into adjoining run, relax and eat.
When I walk her on loose leash around the property and the other dogs are in outdoor runs she completely ignores.
So challenging behavioral issue/fear with her.

She walked in and out of vet office without paying any attention to the other dogs in the lobby. I walked around room so not approaching any dog face to face. She was wonderful with the staff but a bit of an “over greeter” .

In general Dorothy is a sweet , independent dog. She will seek some affection and then quickly pursue doing her own thing . She is mouthy but that has improved as she understands how to appropriately seeks affection . She loves to go on walks and I believe would happily walk for miles. She is a “traveler” by nature. However in this horrible heat of late our walks are limited to early mornings.

                      7/6/24 from Cindy Green

                      Hi Pat,
Hectic week so just now getting to a little summary and this is a rambling of thoughts.

Dorothy has been here one week. I had originally planned to wean her of the two anxiety meds over a two week period but after observing her I went with one week plan. I do not see an anxious dog. I see a typical high-energy two year old Airedale missing a few foundational behaviors with regards to interactions with people and other dogs.
She gets easily excited and can get very mouthy – nothing unusual there for an Airedale . She needs to learn appropriate interaction. Quiet person and calm hands and body make a big difference with her.
She also is very vocal when aroused .
I think she probably spent her puppyhood with exposure but not much engagement with people. She is sweet and friendly to everyone but does not readily offer her attention or seek to engage. She readily self-entertains with constant movement nose to the ground , digging, rolling in sand , playing in the slightest puddle of water , chasing frogs/lizards , zoomies and she is perfectly happy to do so. Not anxiety . A smart dog stimulating and entertaining herself.
The surrender form noted dog aggression but I see some fear and uncertainty. She lunges to get a dog away from her. She has settled with my young male Burl (always a barrier between) but is very reactive when my older male gets close.
The trainer evaluation noted her paws-up over aroused play style that is not intended aggression but can set off a fight with some dogs . Suspect that is true but not tested as yet.

Just my spin reading between the lines and having had quite a bit of conversation when Yeagers brought Dorothy here:
Dog conflict in the home lead to too much crating , lack of stimulation and frustration .
This then progressed to constant barking and lashing out at the other dogs. This was viewed as anxiety and treated with fairly high doses of Gabapentin and Trazadone.
I note conflict over resources in confined spaces is not unusual and something that requires good management with regards to all dogs involved.

Dorothy’s issues are not anxiety based – she does not pace and pant , she is not fearful of loud noises (tested by four nights of fireworks in the area) and she can calm herself . She does need to learn to be respectful with her mouth and respectful of personal space probably with respect to people and dogs.
She needs to learn to readily offer her attention and engagement .

She is a very good looking dog with a beautiful coat and cute small flop ears. A real sweetie pie !

                      More to come.

                      .
                      Cindy

                        7/6/24 offered Betsy.

From Jill: Hi! I love the name Betsy Ross. Poor girl needs some stability and love.

The timing for me isn’t good right now.. I’ve got a young cat I took in and he’s having some medical issues. Expensive vet bills and and some fecal incontinence… ever try to put a diaper on a cat?

I’ve got my hands full right now. Also.. our older boy ADT Griffin isn’t doing great. He has had trouble in the stairs a few times recently. I don’t think he’s long for this world. Ideally we would want our next ADT to be a youngerish male.

I do appreciate y’all reaching out to me. Hopefully Betsy will thrive in a new forever home soon.

                        ThankYou!!!

                          7/6/24: Offered Betsy and declined.

                          Pat,
I’m so grateful you reached out to me.
But the reason we didn’t take Amos was because our YorkiePoo is so elderly.
There was a chance Amos might have bothered her.
And perhaps Betsy would leave her alone, but my husband is adamant that it would be cruel to bring another dog into our home before Bonnie passes.
And in the meantime Bonnie has perked up some. My friend who just lost her elderly small mix thinks Bonnie might be around for another 6 to 8 mos.
I certainly hope not as her quality of life is so diminished. But I did promise Bill that we would let her live her last days blissfully napping without a new dog in the house.
I will contact you when she passes.
Ollie was so upset when we lost our cat that I know he will be grateful for a new companion then. I’m sorry that we have to pass on this beautiful young female.
                          Regards,
                          Bretynn

Dumped on the property about a week ago. It took 4 days to catch her. She is sweet. Scott vetted her with all shots, hw test, microchipped, and provided preventative. Living with with chi and 2 pit bulls.
