Hi Caron, Thanks for your feedback and communication about Arnold Palmer who is a 1.5 y/o Airedale who came from Singing HIlls Kennel. His owner Travis Clark has surrendered Arnold Palmer to Airedale Rescue Group due to a divorce, raising two younger children and his work. Per our communication last week, you are aware that he surrendered Arnold Palmer to us and we reached out to you to make you aware as we know you have a contract with your Airedale owners to return Airedale to you if they cannot keep. ARG has a wonderful family in PInehurst who will adopt him and is ready to go get him. They are Airedale experienced. We had a 3X Airedale adopter conduct their home visit. We have also checked their references – vet, groomer and personal connection and they are very good adopters.

ARG will issue the adopters a contract that requires them to return Airedale to ARG if they cannot for any reason keep the Airedale. ARG contract charges a $400 adoption fee.

Are you ok with how this is presented. I just want you to know and make sure you agree. We can share pictures, updates, name of adopter too.

              Hi,

My Name is Max Nalepa. I am very interested in meeting and possibly adopting Charlie. I’m someone who is very particular about major decisions, and I do not take adopting a dog lightly. I believe that an Airedale Terrier (a breed I have not owned or spent a significant amount of time with) is among the best fit for me, my hobbies/personality, and living situation.

I’m 26 years old, and raised and cared for my family dog throughout my late childhood and teenage years. I largely helped raise and train my roommates and girlfriends dogs, and they’re just very important animals to me.

I’ve been in the Army for about 8 years, which creates some complications with ownership. I currently live in Columbus, Georgia, and but within the next six months I will be moving to Fairbanks, Alaska, where I will spend the next few years. Because of this, I need to have a dog with above average cold tolerance, although it will be an indoor dog who has cold weather protection during the winter months.

During the day there may be a significant gap in when I would see her due to the requirements of my job. I will also have a roommate (also Army, who I have know for years) who will be able to help balance the lack of consistency in our work schedules. In my free time I am very active, but I plan on bringing my future dog with me to as
much as I can. This will be a single dog household but she will be socialized with our neighbors and friends dogs (which there are plenty of). I’ll be living in a house with a yard, I am unsure if the unit I will have will have a fence or not but I would also be using an e-collar with GPS if I do not have a fence.

Please let me know if you think if I would be a good fit for Charlie. I look forward to hearing from you and I am more than happy to travel to see her.

              Very Respectfully,

              Max Nalepa

This family is looking at breeders for puppies. They want to be on wait list but want a very young dog. They have a 7 month old grand baby living with them and their daughter and she has a pit mix. I mean if you want to do a HV, you can. But they want mostly a puppy. Never had an airedale before. They were looking at some backyard breeders and I offered a few reputable ones they will look into.

Conclusion from CP and PH not worth the HV.

Declined due to not give HW prevention 12 months/yr.

                          Mary emailed the following:

                          Dear Linda,

Because our dogs’ continued health and safety are of utmost importance to Airedale Rescue Group, we require our adopters to have a year-round history of heartworm prevention. Therefore, we are declining your application to adopt an Airedale from our organization.

ARG requires a track record of ongoing and continuous heartworm prevention because heartworm is a very painful death and treatment is also extremely hard on the dog. In seven to nine months, heartworms can move into the heart and if you’re only testing for heartworm annually, there is a chance of the dog dying from the parasite before it has even been identified in the dog. Signs of heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss; symptoms that can also indicate other issues causing the potential for heartworm to be dismissed. As heartworm disease progresses, pets may
develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen. Dogs with large numbers of heartworms can develop sudden blockages of blood flow within the heart leading to a life-threatening form of cardiovascular collapse. This is called caval syndrome and is marked by a sudden onset of labored breathing, pale gums, and dark bloody or coffee-colored urine. Without prompt surgical removal of the heartworm blockage, few dogs survive.

In the U.S., heartworm affects 1 in 100 dogs annually, so it is not rare. The treatment costs is well over $1,000 per dog and not all dogs survive heartworm treatment.

Assuming heartworms are identified in time, your dog will need several months of an injectable treatment called melarsomine. This drug has to be given slowly and carefully because if you kill off the worms too quickly it can be dangerous for your dog. Unlike intestinal parasites that are eliminated via bowel movements, heartworms that die slowly decay in the lungs and a dog’s activity must be severely restricted because overtaxing their lungs can be dangerous during treatment. Additionally, while humans don’t usually get heartworms, most preventive heartworm medications also protect against intestinal parasites like hookworms and roundworms, which are contagious to humans, so protecting your dog from heartworms also protects you from other parasites.

Please consider visiting the American Heartworm Society website (www.heartwormsociety.org) for more information about heartworms and the importance of taking regular preventative measures against infection.

10/20/24 Ruby and Gabby both went to daycare on 10/19. Did not go well. Gabby went after Ruby at doggie daycare and a tech was bitten by Gabby.

Kim feels Ruby needs to be rehomed, so we need to seek a new home for Ruby.

10/13/24 Kim asked me to call about Ruvy. Ruby and Gabb, G. Schnauzer, have gotten into several fights since Ruby was spayed. Injuries to both. I said ARG would take Ruby back. Next day Kim text and asked for a little more time. I recommended a trainer be engaged.

Rudy does well at doggie daycare and was temp tested there.

Otter was transported a week ago to a new home. A prior adopter whose dog recently died. Otter was timid of him on transfer but Barbara let him go. Barbara Yager. We have been checking on the dog in his new home. “Everything is fine”. Wednesday night, Barbara has a premonition that Otter is loose. She called the adopter on Thursday. He was in Walmart. Told her Otter
got out Wednesday. His granddaughter opened the door and Otter got out. He would not come to him and ran into the woods.

Barbara got in the car and drove to Fairburn GA. Otter bounced between a couple of nearby homes. A neighbor had spotted him 3 times Thursday. Bedding and dirty clothes of Barbara’s were placed along with cat food. About 7 pm Thursday, Barbara went into the woods but it was too thick to find him. Friday she searched, another volunteer with a dog went down and with his Airedale. He brought flyers and those got put around.

4 spam calls including one saying he was hit by car and on route to vet. Barbara and a Sue M drove to animal control, 12 miles away! No way he had traveled that far.

Barbara sat late Friday waiting for Otter. He came out from the woods, she called him and he retreated. She was devastated.

All the while Pat was working computer. Linda McVey suggested Lovy Meyers. She was not available. She got ahold of Robin Allgood. Robin came got there are 9 Saturday am and set up the Missy trap. Within 2 hours she had him.

Otter is now home with Barbara and Don and they are keeping him.

The adopter was advised he would not be getting the dog back. The ‘adopter’ is mad and we really don’t care.
