9/5/21: Update from FB PM: We had the best day yesterday!! Hughie (Chewy) was a real gentleman riding in the car and adjusted to our home without an incident!! He loved exploring the back yard and his new home!! He honestly is already ringing the bell to go out!! He was obviously worked with! He loves it outside!! Night time was a dream and he slept perfectly in his new soft crate!! Thank you for this wonderful guy!!

I also wanted to praise his walking and (non) interaction with other dogs! We came into contact with several different dogs on our morning walk, and he didn’t bark once and never pulled or even really pay much attention to them! He even met a cat who became interested in him, but he sat nicely as we spoke to her owner!❤

Hi Christina –We got Biggie today. He is adorable. He is adjusting well and I’m sure he is perfect for our family.
I don’t know if it matters but I would like to share with you a few things:
– I took him straight for a bath. The poor boy smelled and he really needed it.
– He also needs grooming ASAP. I think he has had only one and is a mess. I have the perfect groomer and I’ll beg her for an appointment ASAP.
– the car ride was good but he threw up in the car just when we arrived home. I knew that could happen but it came to my attention the vomit. Eve told me that he was eating Blue Puppy but the vomit had other kind of food (pork, bones, I really don’t know). He has not eating nor peeing much tonight but I guess its normal. However, I would take him to my vet ASAP too.Please do not take my observations as complains. It not my intention at all. I’m the happiest Airedale mom in the world and I’m sure he is perfect for us. I just want to let you know. BTW – he is doing great with my husband. I don’t see him afraid to dads.
Please let me know how do we settle the adoption fee.

to me, AnnecyMy husband and I talked and decided to wait until he moves back down here to South Carolina (he took a job in Indiana in April) before we get a second dog. I work 4 days a week and realize a rescue dog will need more time with me than I can give right now by myself. I so wish I had the luxury of working from home, but I don’t. Hunter needs an owner who can devote their full attention to him so he can be the best dog he can be. Thank you for offering him to me and all the work you’ve done. I know you want to place him soon so he can settle into his happy home. Please keep me on file as we will be more ready for a dog next spring or summer (or hopefully sooner if he gets a job transfer back here sooner). Thank you again for everything you do for this rescue group.

He is house trained and has had no accidents.We were advised to crate him (probably needs more training). He does like to grab things on the floor (socks, shoes, magazines) and play chase but if nothing on the floor he is good. We bought him a couple of chew toys and that seems to help.
I take him on walks with my friend and her dog and he has no issues. We have met with other dogs on walks and his tail is wagging and happy to greet them.
Yes we will be happy to meet and greet with a possible adopter.

I spoke with Carolyn Ingram last week. On the positive side, she is active and it sounds like she would walk the dog regularly. There are trails in the area and also some local area lakes and a golf course. Her previous dog, a Scottie, had issues with its back legs and she invested the time in getting a Theraband (or similar stretchy band) to help it walk and strengthen its front legs. Prior to the Scottie, she had three Dobermans, all of which she trained. She did the grooming herself with the Scottie. She has two daughters close by, both of whom have animals, and one of whom works with animal rescue. If she were to travel, the dog would go to the daughters’ or kennel with the vet.
I did feel there were a few red flags:
1. The townhome/condo complex where she lives has no fencing whatsoever, with no plans to get fencing.
2. Carolyn had an Airedale as a child. She talked about the dog quite a bit but never once did she use his/her name, she just referred to the dog as “it.” Even for those family dogs I have no memory of, I know their names/genders and in conversations about family dogs would refer to them by one or the other.
3. She talked about how she grew up in a small community and this dog would follow them to school and then be there when they came out. I asked what the dog did during their school hours and she told me she didn’t know. When the family left the house in the car, it was always left out and the dog would chase the car for as far as it could! She expressed no adult dismay or concern at any of this.Given the above, my concern is whether she will think she can leave the dog loose outside, especially a puppy or youngster, which is the age group she would like. All it takes is one squirrel, cat, or other critter and the best trained dog is gone. The street on which her complex is located looks like it’s a fast road. I spent a few minutes trying to find a speed limit, but didn’t find one, however, the road is relatively straight (see attached photo).
She also told me she has depression, a symptom of which is depersonalization. She spends a lot of time alone and wants the Airedale for companionship. She has been married 43 years but her husband still works as a coroner with no plans to retire. She also told me she has problems with recall, something that is related to the depersonalization, the result of a bad experience as a child, she said. This was another potential red flag. We all have increasing problems with recall as we get older but add this to the other concerns and it makes it more uncomfortable.
I didn’t call her vet since her last dog died 8 years ago nor did I call her personal reference. It feels sad to deny her given her emotional issues but I just kept thinking if it were one of my babies who was being given up, I would be afraid for her to go to this home.

hi – That would be really great so we can check all the boxes and feel we did the right thing. I phone interviewed the family yesterday and I felt good about them. I spoke to the groomer yesterday – great feedback. I called the vet but they did not have anyone available to speak to me until Monday. Pat will check that box on Monday.I will send an intro note to both of you. If you could reach out to them, that would be great. I really appreciate it. I can’t think of anyone that i trust more to do this.
Biggie – can you believe 8 mos old dog and this is the 4th family who gets an opportunity on him – too old; too young; someone has an older dog that they’re tending to and it was not right time.
Interview Notes:
This would be a 2nd dog to their 6 (?) ish aged ‘dale named Armando. Armando has an Instagram page – he lives a good life. The only thing is they have e fence. I said to her yesterday – you will need to train him to the invisible fence. They do a lot of leash walking. They are pegged for an 8 mos old named Biggie who is in Concord. Biggie’s family says they don’t have the time needed for him and that he is afraid of men. He is not afraid of his 13 y/o sibling but afraid of the dad. Who knows what that means – maybe the dad has done something. Applicant Dad works at home. Applicant Mom is a teacher (Spanish) at CPCC. She is gone 9-2ish a few days a week. 16 y/o daughter at home; 18 y/o son – first year at Clemson. Armando goes everywhere with them. Yesterday they were driving to Clemson to see son and Armando was in the car with them for the visit. They understand forgiveness is necessary with a young Airedale – things are going to happen. BOth parents are on board for adopting as i spoke to both in the car yesterday.Andreina Riera

Chewy has been with us for three days now. I know it takes awhile sometimes to see the real dog when they are stressed in a new environment. However I feel confident that Chewy is a fabulous dog.
He is everything I would expect in a young Airedale. He is exuberant, bold, and sweet. And yes he is like a bull in a china cabinet and he struggles to control his energy and be mannerly . His main issue is lack of impulse control (nothing new here) . When I am calm and quiet with him and offer no interaction unless paws are on the ground he has quickly learned how to earn affection appropriately.
The previous owner clearly tried with this boy. He looses his mind when he sees the leash as he loves to go on walk so they must have walked him regularly. I wait him out until he settles and he offers a sit before I put on the leash and then do the same thing before we go. He struggles with the calm but is a quick study and has become much better in a matter of days.
He knows a few verbal commands such as sit , down, come but owners probably did not understand how to generalize by having all family members work with him .
He is a good leash walker as he understands leash pressure. He will require someone with good leash handling skills as he is big , mighty boy. I have worked with him walking on loose leash and in a structured walk with an informal heal. If a handler is proactive when they approach something that may excite him and place him at their side rather than out front he is very responsive to handler guidance. If he is permitted to be out front when approaching something exciting he probably will lunge and take someone down.
I have tested for food or toy guarding and he exhibits neither. He actually seems interested in fetching and readily releases the ball.
Owners (I assume as he came with clippers) attempted to give him an Airedale clip but left hindquarters and tail unclipped as well as neck and front. So I finished up giving him an Airedale pet clip. Bruce had to help me steady him on the grooming table because he is a big lummox. He was perfectly fine with me clipping his head, neck , ears , hindquarters, tail and sanitary area. He was more interested in Bruce petting him than what I was doing. He loves being brushed .
Chewy is muscular from exercise but 5-6 lbs overweight probably from being fed a dog food that is primarily corn (he came with a bag). I have switched him to a good meat based food . He will probably trim up quick with good food and plenty of exercise.
No idea why vet tech indicated he is aggressive but many a great dog has been known to lose it at the vet due to stress or poor handling.
He checks all the boxes for what I would look for in a good Airedale. He is gorgeous, bold , happy , high energy, curious .
He needs an owner that expects and appreciates these things. He needs plenty of physical and mental exercise. He needs work on impulse control such as working on “place” command and holding a sit or down.
Chewy is an absolute gem !Cindy

Biggie is 55 lbs at 8 months and it took Louie 2 years to reach his max weight of 87lbs. And I saw in his description that he is fearful of men.. is that correct or was that given as an example in the question? I couldn’t tell. Thank you so much for letting us know about him. Here is how my response is:Is he house trained? Unknown but this is something that can easily be trained
Did they adopt him from a breeder and who? He was purchased from a breeder
Why does he have to relieve himself so often? Does he have a health issue? No known health issues, this response about relieving himself may just be a triggered that they find they don’t have the time to spend with him that he needs. Younger dogs have shorter bladder spans – they do have to go more often, only because they’re young.

We have an 8-month-old male Airedale, named Biggie, that is neutered weighing about 55 lbs. He does have some growing to do yet. We need to put a timing on it as if you decline, we will need to offer Biggie to another approved applicant to accommodate the timeline of the surrendering owner.
