Geno is doing great. For as skittish as he is I am Surprised that the Thunder,or fireworks doesn’t faze him. He walks great on leash and rides beautifully in the car which were important for him and us so he can go with us as much as possible. He seems to favor his back left leg a little so we made an appointment for next week for a full physical. He is such a darling, once he gets totally comfortable with us and his new surroundings I think he’ll be a very happy pleasant Airedale. I can tell by his personality that he has not been mistreated but He has been neglected. We’ll make sure he gets all the care he needs.

My question is: Would it be worth it to reach out to JoAnn the previous owner and ask if he has ever had an injury so we can maybe get a little back history? We will be taking him back to the vet in a few weeks for a more in depth look at it. However it would be nice if we could get a little history to help. Maybe you think it better not to reach out to her. could you reach out and ask or send me her contact info. He is doing very well. He has his evaluation for training Nov 8th. I did check his surrender and there is nothing about an injury. So, perhaps we need to consider 75% of surgical costs since they made us aware early on.

Home Evaluation for David Coven

Long story short – David is an excellent candidate for an Airedale. He has a LOT of experience with dogs, loves his dogs deeply and cares for them like family. I would leave my dogs with him in a heartbeat.

He lives in a semi rural area and has a good setup for dogs both in and out of the house. The backyard is fenced but in conversation with him, I realized he isn’t someone who would leave a dog out in a fenced yard by itself. He will be very involved with any animal he owns. David’s home is beautiful and there is evidence of his love for his dogs everywhere you look. He is a retired art director and while he has only been in Asheville since 2022, he has totally renovated his home and filled it with artwork (his and others).

He has relationships with his neighbors and their pets. We talked about how amazed we were that people would just let their dogs out without any worry about where they were and he told me about a neighborhood dog who has a neglectful owner. Lulu (the dog) visits him daily, comes in and he feeds her when she isn’t being fed at home. He has tried to get the owner to surrender her but she won’t. That said, the owner doesn’t mind that the dog comes to visit David and that David is helping provide care to her dog.

David is calm, quiet spoken, funny and clearly intelligent. He has had many dogs in his life and realizes he needs another dog. I was so comfortable with him that I invited him over to meet Bob and our dogs and imagine we will see more of him (we have lots in common).

I’m happy to answer any questions you have that I might have missed on the evaluation form – but my recommendation is that he is moved to the top of the list for a dog that needs a great home.

I told him I would ask what the next steps are and get back to him. I hope you have a dale looking to land in paradise cause this could be it!

Good morning Christina!

It was a pleasure to meet Michelle and her husband yesterday, they told us all about how they could tell how sweet and special Sam is from their trip together. He was great on the drive until the last 15 minutes when he decided he had enough of the backseat and wanted to be up front in Abigail’s lap 😂

He seems to be adjusting well so far, we’ve been on some long walks around the neighborhood and to Forsyth Park this morning for him to sniff and explore. It’s clear he isn’t used to traffic because passing cars startle him and he perks up at all the sounds outside on our street. But he is so smart and confident that he will be a local Savannah pup in no time!

As far as the name goes l, we picked out a new name the first time we saw his picture – Teddy 😇

Thanks again for all your help and we will keep in touch about his progress and planning a meetup one day!

Good point. The last we reimbursed was Sept 2022. This is prior to the invoices Maggie sent. It was for $2383.

I will tell them we will reimburse $2600. Then I will ask for copies monthly so we can reimburse as we go and not have a big amount at one time.

I don’t see any issues with this applicant. Young energetic couple with a nice home and great outlook on terriers. They’re definitely keen to have a dog sooner than later and of course tried to ask about Dorothy. Both are willing to do what it takes to make it work daily and Abigail definitely works from home so a dog would have companionship as they adjust to life with them. Great location they live in for walking and enjoying the busy town of Savannah with a dog. Very dog friendly area.

Fencing is definitely over 6 feet tall. And secure from what I can tell. Great sunroom is also on the back of the house. Willing to walk their dog daily as they acknowledge this is a smaller home they live in.

1/12/24: spoke with Tom this afternoon. He grew up with Airedales and the family has had at least 6 since he was young. He saw Fergus and asked Debbie to send a message to apply to adopt him. Both work a few days a week and are home more than they work. They have a 3-year-old Labradoodle that goes many places with them and they walk him daily, even though they have a fenced yard. they understand Fergus’s need for the surfaces and already have runners in their home. They take care of grands at times and have a 3-year-old grandchild and a new one on the way. They have lived in Wilmington for 25 years.

Veterinary: 1/12/24: Talked with Erin at LaCroix 910-799-3100. Blue is UTD on vaccines, and they have a script for Simpirco that expires in July 2024. No concerns, great dog owners, and bring their dogs in when needed.

Talked to Brad who has lived next door for 25 years. Great dog people and neighbors. Tom walks Blue every day without fail. It does not matter the weather. Bard would come back as a dog in their home if he could. Brad was great to talk to and thank me first for being involved in dog rescue and giving my time to that.

I spoke with both Jordan and Abigail January 9th. They have no dogs currently and are ready to adopt and Airedale anytime. Their back yard has a 6-foot stockade wood fence so no chance of any escapes, front yard is not fenced in. Abigail works from home so she will be able to train and work with a new dog and Jordan works close to home and is usually home early afternoon so a dog would benefit from them both having lots of time to devote to him/her. They live in Savannah and there are so many dog friendly places to go, they would be out and about with a dog all the time. They are very active and young so an energetic, playful Airedale is right up their alley. If they do plan on going away, the dog would go unless they went to their family in MD, then the dog would stay home with a friend watching them in their own home, which is either one of their references.

They have had a Wheaten in the past that had serious issues of biting that led them to get the help of a behaviorist, trainer and using their vet for help for three years. The first day they had him, he bit Abigail but that did not stop them from keeping him and trying to get the best help for his issues. At the advice from his trainer and vet, they reluctantly had to make the decision to let him go. But they tried their best, so I do believe they would make fantastic pet parents again. I would not let this deter them from adopting a dog, whatsoever. Jordan’s side of the family has had Wheaten’s so they are both knowledgeable about the Terrier breed. They understand and can afford the needs and care that is required for a dog to stay happy and healthy.

The vet reference they had on their application is for the vet they will be using in GA for a dog they will be getting. They gave me their prior vet’s name and phone number, Rocky Gorge Animal Hospital. 7515 Brooklyn Bridge Rd. In Laurel, MD. The phone number is 301-776-7744. The vet’s office when I called gave me all their information and they have had their dog on flea/tick and heartworm preventative and always UTD on all shots, also including medication for allergies.

Both of their references gave them an outstanding review, as well. They said they are great, kind, people that would definitely give a dog the best home.

So, they are ready to move to the next step with a HV and adopt an Airedale from us and I recommend that we proceed.

House faces a road but is used by residences of sub-division only (no thru traffic). There is a sidewalk on both sides and a park area. 1 female Airedale around 4 years old in great condition. She had been groomed in November and no skin conditions could be seen. She interacted with the children but is definitely a “daddy’s girl”. She was friendly to me. Could hear her barking when I rang doorbell but she stopped when I came in.

o That often the rescued dog they want to adopt or foster may have training accidents, even if they are housebroken, while they are in their new home or foster care, for the first few weeks. They understand this and they come home at lunch when not working from home.

o Ask the applicant what they would do or how they would react to the new dog having an accident. They would clean it up and not berate the dog.

What was their reply? They know that getting a rescue can be stressful for the dog and that it takes time for them to adjust to new surroundings. They are more than willing to work with a rescue.
