We live north of Crossville and are retired. We worked for many years at ATRA in Michigan and have owned 6 Airedales, 4 which were rescued. Right now we have an Alaskan Sled Dog, that found us and we have a Terrier, possibly Airedale, Lab mix. Feel free to reach out if you need help in the future.

Samantha emailed me back and she is in Sarasota. She will reach out to me when she returns to arrange a HV.

I reached out to Samantha and asked about a weekend home visit in Durham. Made the connection that we both use the same vet.

              Hi Christina,

I wanted to let you know that Jon and I went over to meet Sam and Bryce with the dogs yesterday. From what I understand, Nathan – the third person – is an OTR truck driver and he was out on the road. Both Sam and Bryce were very nice, and they invited us in – so we actually did get a peek inside the house. As you mentioned, they live in a condo complex, so there is not a lot of yard, but they are on an end unit that has a side yard they could use to take a dog outside to potty. They also back up to a paved walking trail that I’m assuming goes around the complex. The house looked good considering their ages – it was tidy, no clutter.

I do think they are “dog people” and would likely do well with an energetic dog. He did keep mentioning that he wanted a dog that they could do things with – like run, hike, etc., so I’m not sure a senior dog would be an ideal match. Bryce did do as you suggested, rubbing his hands on the dogs and then on his face/eyes. We stayed there for a little over 30 minutes, and he didn’t have any kind of alarming reaction. He said as long as they kept the house clean, he would probably be ok, but he’d know yesterday if he was going to have a reaction.

I will note that Sam mentioned he was between jobs right now, so if one were to become available and you were considering placing with him, I would just make sure and ask if he’d be able to cover pet food, heartworm/flea meds, vet visits, grooming, etc., without any trouble. Bryce mentioned he is in school and currently doing all classes from home.

The other thing Sam mentioned is that his friends (or maybe his girlfriend?) has two cats that they’d eventually like to introduce the dog to (that don’t live there), but he said that would be down the road and they’d just see how that goes.

As long as they’re good about keeping the dog on a leash when outside, I don’t see any issues.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or anything else I can do to help!

              Thanks,
              Doug

Sam and his housemates Nathan, Bryce – live in Knoxville

Sam grew up with a female Airedale mixed with a sheep dog named Sheba, a

Bryce has a dog allergy, so a hypoallergenic breed is a must. I explained that aireadales are not hypoallergenic. We agreed that the best test will be an Airedale home visit and Bryce needs to touch and rub his eyes/nose in the home visit aireale.

Rent – Sam rents his place and says it is not an issue to add a dog.

Sam Works from home and will likely have a similar schedule post covid.
                  There is not a fence.
We don’t have a fence, but we have a back yard and side yard – how will these be used

He did mention that he would like to train the dog to walk off leash eventually.

Sam is interested in a female instead of a male.

                            Christina,

I have never fostered a dog before. So what is involved? I guess that I would go get the dog from Cartersville and bring it to my home in Marietta. (My home has a wonderful fenced-in back yard that Trapper loved. So that part would work.) I am guessing that I would be fostering the dog until we could find a forever home for it. And that could be a week, a month, or several months. Is that about right?

I live alone, the home is pretty dog-proof, the yard is perfect for a Terrier, the house has a doggie-door, I love Airedales. So all of that is good. I am going out of town next weekend Friday to Tuesday (I am home this weekend). So I would need my son to come over to take care of the dog. He is 28. In October, I am going on a cruise for 12 days, so again, I would need my son to step up. My 22 year-old daughter, who attends UGA, would be thrilled to help out on weekends, I bet. She has been begging me to get another doggie.

Hmm. In November, my lady friend will be moving in for the winter (she lives in Michigan during the warmer weather) and will be bringing her Chow Chow. I can control him well, but I think by November we would need to have placed the foster Airedale in its forever home to avoid a possible clash between the ‘dale and a Chow.

Let me check with my adult children to see if they will help out. If so, maybe I could do this for you. Given my schedule, I might not be the perfect foster parent at this moment. But I have lots of experience with Terriers and have a great physical situation for a foster Airedale. Let’s both think about this and perhaps we can talk by phone later today.

                            with best regards,
