Great chat with the cassons!
They have a great application and it’s clear they loved their Airegirl, Rory, to bits and she had a great life. Met their 1st dale at a friend’s and then did a lot of research before getting Rory.
They definitely do what they can for their dog’s best life. When Rory got hip issues, they would give her a grass fed beef patty sautéed in anchovies along which her kibble, the anchovies providing lots of those essential oils for joints. That girl def ate better than I do, lol.
They’re yard isn’t huge but they have lots of parks, greenways, etc in the neighborhood and since they are in a gated community, roads are quiet. They have a communal park across the street. Plus most residents are in their 50s so not a lot of crazy drivers.
They are in the process of clearing their yard some in preparation for the fence, which should be complete in about 2 months. They walk every day even without a dog currently.
I discussed chipping letting them know that if a dog is in foster we’ll usually chip them but if it’s more of a straight handover, the dog may not be. They were fine with that. They expect an annual cost of $6000 to card for the dog so the cost of a chip is nominal for them.
They’re not really on social media except NextDoor. They used to be on FB and were members of the Airedale club of Charlotte.
They hadn’t filled in flea/tick/HW so I asked what Rory was on: Heartgard and Frontline.
They prefer a younger dog just because of the heartbreak of losing them – they want as much time as possible with her/him, and would also “love another girl.” I think 5or 6 wouldn’t be too old.
They know next step is home visit. Depending on what’s going on and who’s available, that could wait until the fence is in or we could do it now/sooner and then when the fence is in, they can send photos to show it’s done and they are ready to have the fog in the house. Id be inclined to do it sooner rather than later because that would get them excited and push them to get the fence done sooner. Plus they would know the wheels are still rolling.

Good call with James. Two concerns that popped up from the application is the fact that they have a cat. The cat already lives with a 6 month old lab so is okay with dogs. I talked with him about how I worked with Megan when I first got her so she would not go after Mo the cat, just in case there were issues Another concern was the pool and what they would do to prevent the dog from drowning. He talked about teaching the dog to swim and how to get out going to the shallow end steps.This will be their second Airedale, although he told me his parents had Airedales. One and a half years ago, their first ADT, George, got out when his children left the gate open and was hit by a car but his previous dogs, 2 labs and a beagle, all died of old age. Since George died, they then had an e-fence installed as double prevention from escaping.
He plans to run filed trials with George so will train him for that as well as basic obedience.
I called their vet, Wilmington Animal Healthcare, who told me they are all up to date with vaccines and flea/tick.
Erin Walter, their personal reference, gave me a glowing review. They are neighbors and she said she has seen them with both older and younger stage dogs and always they have been treated well and are well loved.Matt Holycross
I really liked Matt Holycross. He is Airedale experienced, getting his previous dale, “Beau,” from a NC breeder in ’06 (Jerry Crawley, Saber Ridge Kennels). Beau was 14-1/2 when he died of congestive heart failure. When younger, they realized Beau has vision issues and it turned our he had juvenile cataracts in one eye and in his elder years, he was blind in one eye but was the happiest dog, still going to daycare when Matt was at work, and chasing critters.
Matt would like a dog on the younger end of the spectrum; they lost Beau in December ’20 and their poodle, Hank, in July ’19 and that was hard because dogs are such “an emotional investment.” But, he said if the dog was the right fit, which was key, and needed a home, they would consider an older dog. He talked about how dogs were part of their family and that he really grieved for them when they passed. The dog would need to be good with other dogs andwith children.
Their current dog is Charlie, a 6 YO Yorkie-Poodle mix, whom they’ve had for about 1-1/2 years. I liked what he said about Charlie: They initially had some issue with him but Matt realized that these issues were mostly his fault because he had set expectations for Charlie. Once he realized that, he was able to let go of those expectations, allowing Charlie to be Charlie, and they’ve not had more problems with him. I thought that was quite astute of him; many people refuse to see themselves as the problem and blame everything on the dog.
I called their vet, Four Paws Animal Hospital and was told they keep their dogs up to date with vaccines and heartworm treatment (Heartguard). For fleas, he couldn’t remember what they used but said they generally used as needed seasonally.
Their personal reference, CJ Palmer spoke glowingly about their care of the dogs and confirmed how they are part of the family and well taken care of.
My call with the groomer was actually odd and I think we should take their comments with a grain of salt. They were very snooty and talked about how the Holycrosses didn’t take good care of the dogs because they didn’t bring them in for grooming often enough, actually going 3 months without a groomer (shocking! I normally only groom 3-4 times a year and my pups are far from neglected and are well cared for.). My suggestion is letting the home visit person determine whether their dogs are “neglected.”1/2022 I am moving Atisha to moved on/hold. Since she will be having kids in the next two years the dale will need to be child friendly.

Great call with Atisha and her fiancé, Mike. She has a great app – lots of good, informative info – with vety positive and (mostly) all the “right” answers.I was concerned that she had NA for both flea/tick and HW. She uses Frontline as needed but for HW, her vet recommended Quad Dewormer since they want to go more “natural.” However, Quad (Bayer) doesn’t cover HW! I raised that with her and she had no idea – she just assumed it covered HW. She asked what I use so I told her Simparica Trio. She says they will likely switch; I did tell her we could not adopt out to someone who does not use a HW preventative. (I’m Totally shocked her vet would recommend this for HW!)
Fortunately, someone at a recent ADT Club of Charlotte had this same conversation with her just recently and told her exactly what I said – any potential risk from preventative is far outweighed by the risk of getting HW. I would have HV volunteer confirm the hW is now in use. (Since she and Mike have hosted an Airedale Club/Charlotte, I wasn’t sure if she’d actually need a home visit since she’d essentially had one, but I think we should go ahead and do it so whomever it is can follow up on the hW issue)
I’ll call the vet tomorrow but given her vet recommended HW preventative with a product that doesn’t actually prevent it, I’d consider a new vet!
I’ve just left a vmail for jack Oudin, who she put down as her personal reference.
They would like a male puppy to be brother to 4 Yo Maple, also ADT. They adopted maple when she was 6 months. We discussed not often getting puppies into ARG very often and she understood that. She and mike are getting married in May 2022 so ideally would like to wait until after that to get the dog but they wanted to get their application in so they’re ready to go if/when a puppy comes in. If a puppy comes in before then, they would still want to adopt since they know puppies aren’t common.

What a sweetie! As much as I would love to bring Luke into our home, we were thinking it would be at least 6 months before we had the opportunity to adopt. It is just too soon for us right now, additionally, we plan to have kids in the next two years and I’m worried that Luke wouldn’t do so well.Thank you,
