2/22 – Kristen responded that they are adopting a ‘mix’ ‘dale from a rescue in GA. We know of the ‘dale and it appeared to be full bred and rescue declined to work with arg – wanted to place on own.

Subject: Pearl, Saturday 2/18 (TOMORROW) Signal Mountain to Charlotte

Thank you for helping to transport Pearl on Saturday February 18 from Signal Mountain to Charlotte, NC!!!! Let me know that you received this note and are ‘good’ with the details. (THANK YOU!!!)
Safe Travels and I will be available for any questions.(919-605-4563) Let me know when you’re safely back home! Pictures are welcome but safety first!

                Safety:

Regular safety – please ensure that you are aware of Pearl when opening car doors, transferring her from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Unless necessary, remain in car until transport transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured by hand on the leash; when allowing potty breaks – ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a dog in unfamiliar settings. Do not let her off leash at any time. Double Leashing is preferred if you have a slip lead to bring along for your leg of the trip.
Do not feel the need to walk Pearl outside if you arrive early. Sitting in the car will be fine for her. (If you have a water bowl, please bring it so she can take a water sip between cars to keep him hydrated).

PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Pearl cannot accidentally open a window or door! (It has happened!)

They will definitely be fine to adopt. Their house and financial means will absolutely meet the need of any airedale. They are calm and know dales can be wild. We shared some stories about Jasper’s antics and they didn’t flinch. They did share, they probably want a younger dog who can participate in the family activities: walking daily, boat rides at the lake, hanging in the backyard. They are also a bit timid about strong prey drives. That is the only thing that somewhat concerned me. I’ve had 4 dales and they were/ all very prey driven. I think they’ve had 3-4 dales and they seem to have done some in-depth training in that area. But depending on the age of the dog, I’m not sure if it would be feasible to retrain; however, anything is possible. Their airedale, Ginger, is VERY sweet! She is well groomed, plenty of toys and is certainly the center of the family. I wouldn’t anticipate her having any problems with another dog. I mentioned during the adoption process if it works out for the dogs to meet prior, that is sometimes done. But as I said that, I realized I might be thinking of my parents Great Pyrenees group doing that. They have a close personal relationship with their vet so all health needs would be met without question. They asked if the dogs are neutered. I said I believe so but would confirm. Male/ female doesn’t seem to matter.

Overall, they were lovely and well experienced. It was a pleasure meeting them and I hope it works out for them to welcome an airedale in need because they will spoil and love him/ her!

Blanks adopted one of Bay’s puppies from 2021 (Easter Puppies) – believe they called her Ruthie

2/16/23 – asked Blanks for transport help since they’re in Acworth GA and would meet Pat Painter for Pearl.
THey responded could not help w/ transport. Sent photo of Cosmo – one ear up always and Ruthie.

                                  Next Step: Home Visit

Dale and Kim are experienced Airedalers. They currently have a 10 YO spayed female, Ginger, a rescue through a non-Airedale group. They had two previous Airedales, one passed at 2YO, the result of a blood disorder and after a year of chemo; the other, Winston, was euthanized last summer at 14-1/2 due to spleen cancer.

Per Crosswinds vet, Ginger is kept up to date on vaccines and with HW/Flea/Tick meds. (Heartguard, Nexgard)

The family has a large fully fenced yard. When they first moved in a few years ago, they installed an e-fence (which they no longer generally use) until their physical fence was installed. They only use the e-fence these days when a new dog arrives to train him/her in case a door is left open. Once the dog learns not to leave the yard, they remove the e-collar. They’ve never had a dog run away, or hit by a car. The dog will be chipped, if not already.

They do have a pool but their dogs are not allowed out there unsupervised. They also actively teach their dogs to swim. Kim gets up very early in the a.m. and will walk the dog(s) for miles (weather permitting). Dale will walk with them on the weekends.

Dale works 2-3 days from home; his wife is in and out as she manages four different cancer research offices. Their next door neighbor is their dog walker/care taker – she will actually take the dog with her to her store. The dogs have free rein of the house once Dale and Kim know they can be left on their own. They will likely bring in a trainer. They have crate trained and use the crate until comfortable leaving the dog free. They have a friend with Great Danes who has a trainer she loves so will likely go with that person.

When I asked how much they expected to spend on care annually, he noted likely thousands between grooming every 5-6 weeks, food, vet, etc. They both make excellent money so that is not a problem. Ginger currently eats a special salmon based meal they special order.

I asked Dale for a personal reference and he gave me their neighbor, who raved about them as parents. Brogan confirmed the dog(s) get lots of exercise. They let her know whatever health issues are going on and “love them as much as I’d hope any dog owner to ever love and they exceed my expectations.” She says they are the best parents.

They agree to pay an adoption fee and agree that if the dog does not work out, they will return it to ARG.

Because they have their senior ‘dale, Ginger, and their son has a dog as well, they require a dog that gets along with others. They would like a ‘chill’ dog but also one they can take on their longer walks. They would like a dog on the younger side, who can also help keep Ginger young.
