Subject: Airedale Rescue – jumping back in the pool + Facebook post!Hi Christina,
We’ve decided the time has come to jump back on the Airedale wagon. So, we thought we’d reach out to you to “officially”(?) start down the rescue path again. Are there things we need to do (like file/refresh an application, etc.) to get things moving?
Also – and more specifically – Kara saw a Facebook post today (you were tagged) about two 5-month old Airedales in NC that came across someone’s radar. That’s what really prompts this message :). We would love to know more about those dogs.
As always, hope you’re well! Emmett & Celia just started their summer break, so we’ve got plenty going on around here….

Hi Christina!
Sorry for the delay in replying. I literally never check my email and only saw this just now.
But your timing is ridiculous, because Baxter (‘dale from VA) passed away Wednesday night. It was completely unexpected. Long story, but the gist of it is that he had to be heavily sedated to go to the vet (extreme anxiety, as we learned after we adopted him 😉), then he (we think) had a bad reaction to a shot, followed by (we think) a possible undiagnosed hemangiosarc rupturing in his abdomen. We’ll get the necropsy results from the vet school in a few days and hopefully learn more, but the wheels just kind of came off all at once. He was about to turn 11, so it didn’t seem like it should be his time yet 😭.
So, with all that context… we’re currently grieving, along with the “bonded pair” goldendoodle Baxter came with, but we certainly give Gerardo’s ‘dales high marks in the past ♥️.
If Elton is already spoken for, then that’s awesome, but if not, Kara & I will need to discuss. Her specific words to me just now were, “I’m not exactly inclined to say Yes, but I’m definitely not inclined to say No.” Obviously the cat thing would be a big, big question, and I would assume he’s good with kids (Emmett & Celia are 13 & 11 now).
We hope you’re doing wonderful. We still occasionally talk about good ol’ Tom Tuna 😀.

My mom has had some health problems that puts me traveling to NC frequently. Things should calm down in the next few weeks with that, but I don’t think I can take on a new pup right now. I’m afraid all the traveling would be stressful for the pup. Thank you so much for contacting me and I’m glad the pups have ARG!!Lake Murray is great but that wind off the lake today was cold!!!

She still needs work on potty training. She is learning to settle when in a crate. Ruby is doing good leash walking.
Ruby does not do well with other dogs. She is very possessive of her people and will fight with another dog to be by her human. She does have good resource guarding, dog or human food.
She has been in 3 homes since she was surrendered to us! Each home had at least one or more dogs and it did not work.

We are working I finding someone within a reasonable distance to do your home visit. While I understand you are interested in Dorothy, we have a young female Airedale recently adopted that needs to come back to us for a new home. The older female Giant Schnauzer is not tolerating the young pup and it has caused issues between the 2 dog.
Ruby was recently spayed, is microchipped, heart worm negative, on preventative and a very smart dog. She has a natural tail and is just over a year old. She had been surrendered from an older man who could no longer care for her.
From the current family
“Ruby is a sweet girl that will immediately steal your heart and is extremely smart! Within a couple of days Ruby learned to sleep in her crate, sit on command, and ring a bell when wanting to go outside. Ruby is still very much a puppy and can be a bit mouthy when playing. She will require chew toys for distraction and stimulation. Ruby also loves to fetch a ball and is still working on returning it. She loves walks and does well on a leash after she burns off a bit of energy.”One downside is she has been allowed on furniture and I know that is not something you do, but hopefully that will not deter you.
I can give you a call in the afternoon on Monday if that will work.

Subject: Dorothy Airedale Rescue Group Transport 11/2/24 – Saturday morningHello! Tomorrow morning will be Dorothy’s day! She will be going from Florence to Atlanta! Thanks to each of you who have played a part of Dorothy’s life – we could not do it without you.
Safety:
Regular safety – please ensure that you are aware of Dorothy when opening car doors, transferring her from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Unless necessary, remain in car until transport transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured by hand on the leash; when allowing potty breaks – ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a dog in unfamiliar settings. Do not let her off leash at any time. Double Leashing is preferred if you have a slip lead to bring along for your leg of the trip.Do not feel the need to walk Dorothy outside if you arrive early. Sitting in the car will be fine for her. (If you have a water bowl, please bring it so he can take a water sip between cars to keep him hydrated). Staying in the car is safest and less risk for escape.
PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Brandy cannot accidentally open a window or door! (It has happened! Airedales are very smart!)

Owners told us that their dogs have access to most of the house when they are not home. Some
bedrooms are closed off. The yard has a short stone wall around it and the dogs have been trained
for an underground electric fence. Paula said they would have the fence company train the new dog
also. Dogs are not left unattended or chained outside.
Children:
[Give ages of children, if any, and pay special attention to the behavior of the children, the parents’
responses and method of discipline, and the children’s interactions with other pets. Note whether
parents always supervise young children with other pets and if the parents seem to expect the
child/children to be “responsible” for the care of the pets.]
Dick and Paula live alone – no small children
Family Environment:

It seems like a fairly quiet household. The current two Airedales are well behaved – ran to greet us
and then laid down on the screened porch.
Life-Style Compromises:

Dick and Paula are both retired and already have two Airedales, so it doesn’t seem like it will be a big
lifestyle change for them.
Other Pets:

overweight or underweight, type of collar, id tags other pets have, etc.]
Two Airedales – ages 8 and 9. Male and female, half siblings. I don’t remember their names. Both
dogs seemed happy, healthy and well groomed.
Owner Interaction With Other Pets:
o Describe the relationship all family members seem to have to other pets.
o What role will the dog play in applicant’s life?
o Their current dogs go to the dog park every morning, have access to the yard throughout the
day and go for a golf cart ride each afternoon.
o Are the other pets treated like family members?
o Definitely
o How do the other animals behave?
o Typical rambunctious Airedales when we arrived, but listened to the owners and calmed
down a couple of minutes after we arrived.
o If applicant is looking for an additional dog, or cat why does applicant what another?
Paula said the reason they want to adopt a new dog is current Airedales are getting older. One in
particular is slowing down a lot.
o Does applicant believe that the new dog will “train” old dog or vice versa?
The only mention of training was that Paula and Dick plan to have the electric fence company
train the new dog for the fence. I did not ask about obedience training, but both of their dogs
definitely have training.
o Has applicant ever owned more than one dog or cat at the same time?
They currently have two Airedales.
o Is applicant prepared for the increased work, expense [including vet cost], and commotion?
o Yes
o How committed is adopter?
o They both seem very committed.
o What are the owner’s responses to behaviors good and bad?
o There was no bad behavior from their current dogs.
Do owners demand perfection or have unreasonable expectation regarding behaviors?
o They did not seem to be unreasonable at all.
o Do other dogs in the home obey happily?
o Yes, they are both well behaved and seemed like happy dogs.
o Are the other dogs out of control and undisciplined?
o Not at all.
o Do the owners appear to know some basic training techniques?
o The dogs did as the owners asked, so it appeared that they have training
o How do the animals react to the owner’s response?
o The dogs listened to the owners when they asked them to sit or lie down.
Important Question to Answer:
o Explain that re-homing a dog is stressful for the dog.
o That often the rescued dog they want to adopt or foster may have training accidents, even if
they are housebroken, while they are in their new home or foster care, for the first few
weeks.
o Ask the applicant what they would do or how they would react to the new dog having an
accident.
What was their reply?
We told them that the new rescue may not be housebroken. They got their current Airedales as
puppies, so they have previously dealt with dogs who are not housetrained.
