Checks with Molly find that Truman is fitting in great in their home. Molly said she was leaning toward adopting him, but wants to wait until he has his first vet appointment to make sure he is healthy as they do not want the expense of medical bills. She said that he had a little cough now and would take him to the vet if it continued. She is slowly training him to the collar for the e-fence and is progressing slowly and wants to take her time doing that. He has been alone in the house with the other 2 dogs and no trouble out of him at all. He did have an accident in the house, but Molly could not get out of the tub to put him outside, but she said other than that no problems at all. Good report.

          Cyn,

Hey, I was wondering how to go about being a foster family for the rescue. I currently have two dales (Bella, 2 yrs old, we adopted from the rescue in February and Liam, 4 yrs old, that we’ve had since he was 4 months.)

          Thanks,

          Molly

                Hi Art

I am a volunteer with ARG, Airedale Rescue Group. We have an Airedale need to transport a dog named Katy on Saturday. Katy will be coming from Nashville and headed to outside of Hilton Head so she’s traveling quite a distance on Saturday! The leg that we need help with is from Marietta to McDonough, GA. The person who is going to get her in Chattanooga lives in Smyrna so I figured that Marietta would be a good meeting place. Would you all be able to do this? Timing is that Katy will arrive in Marietta around 2:15 and she would meet the McDonough person around 3:30. (Of course adjustments can be made.) Could you all help? She’s a timid girl and has come so far in her foster home but she was being fed behind a church for over a year! So she is slow to warm up……thanks for considering.

Hi Barbara, I’m sorry for the confusion w/ my email addy. That was my error and I do apologize for that.

Yes, we’ve had both Sam and Stella since they were puppies. We bought Sam from a breeder here in Augusta and bought Stella from a breeder in Plaines/Americus, GA. We’ve talked about getting another pup from Stella’s breeder, but decided we really don’t have the time and energy for a puppy right now. That’s why we thought an older sparedale might be a better fit for us and our current situation.

Josh, our son, was born 10/8/04, so he’ll be a year old soon. He loves Stella. In fact, he says her name more than he says Momma!!! They are good pals and she’s very happy to clean up under his highchair after each meal.

My husband and I both work full time and while we are at work the dogs stay in the basement, which is really a large family room w/ an attached bedroom and bathroom — kind of like a mother-in-law suite. Anyway, we keep the dogs’ food/water down here and they have their own beds down here too. The computer and my husband’s favorite recliner and extra large tv are down here too, so we spend a good bit of time down here w/ the dogs. Stella also spends a good bit of time upstairs w/ us. Sam has arthritis and cannot do stairs. The new dog would hopefully be able to do stairs and have full run of the house while we are home.

We are not in a big rush to get a new dale. I just want to be ready to roll w/ the right one comes along.

Let me know how you think it would be best for us to proceed.

I may try to call you this weekend to discuss further.

JILL- MY NOTE TO YOU TO at jill.moxley@comcast.net was returned undeliverable. Is this the correct address to use?

Hi Jill, I am Barbara Lawson, volunteer with http://www.airedalerescuegroup.com I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. We have had to deal with a crisis with our senior airedale, Sally, which resulted in a peaceful passing for her, and a sad time for us.

I am glad you are thinking of adding another ‘dale to your family. It is always good to hear from airedale experienced families. Have you had both Sam and Stella since they were puppies?

I guess my only concern is whether you are ready to take on another rambunctious youngster, as you have an infant son, and surely have your hands full. How old is he? Are you at home with him for now?

I would like to speak with you; please let me know a good time to call. I live in northern New York now, but am still involved with my southern rescue group.

After we speak, the next step is a home visit. We have a volunteer who works at MCG in Augusta; so I think that can be arranged.

Max, the one yr old, currently in Huntsville AL may be a good match for you and your family. He has not been living with children, but his owner says he sits politely on walks and lets small children pet him. The same is true of his “brother” Cowboy, who is 5.

Hope to speak with you soon.

                  Barbara,

Again, I’d like to apologize for giving the wrong e-mail on may application. I made the mistake of crossing my work and home addresses and that just does not work. My mistake.

I’ve been thinking a good deal about your comment as to whether we were ready for a new ‘dale in our home since we are also busy w/ an infant. At first I was like…absolutely we are ready. But, after more thought I started remembering what it is like to have 2 frisky ‘dales in the house…all the running, chasing, bitey mouth play fights, tuck-butt-run tantrums, etc. and decided that it probably would be in the best interest of my son and the new ‘dale for us to wait.

I think we need to wait until a) my hormones get back to normal and b) until my son has a little more respect for animals. He’s pretty good w/ Stella, but Stella has always been here w/ him too. Plus, Josh is still exploring so I imagine that Stella will have to deal w/ some pulled hair/tail etc. before its all over.

We would still love to add a new ‘dale to our family, but the timing is probably not right. However, if y’all find one in GA that really really needs a home…keep us on the list. I think we could be just as easily swayed the other direction if the right ‘dale comes along.

Will look you up again when things stabilize here.

                  Thanks for your time.

                  Jill

Hi, Jill. Good to hear from you. You do sound like a good fit for Jake, with one huge red flag that’s not on the website.

I initially met Jake at my vet’s office. The thinking was that he was 3 years old but the vet and I think he’s more like 1. We’re waiting on the AKC papers — if we can trust this dirt bag to give us the right ones…

ANYWAY — after the first introductions, I got down on the floor with him and was tussling and wrassling, like young young fellows like to do. He was doing all the puppy fall over on your shoulder and wag stuff. I evidently jerked on his collar at some point, not noticing it. He was also getting pretty worked up playing, all excited.

Without warning, he growled and then bit my arm. Through a denim jacket so no break in the skin but definitely bruised. He then backed off, glared at me and growled and started coughing, and awful bronchitis deep cough.

Well, obviousy — I was stunned. We had the vet evaluate the cough — no heart or lung problems, but he said it sounded to him very much like when a trachea collapses — dog coughs, it opens back up. But when it DOES collapse, I think it scares him and when he got scared, he bit, and it wasn’t a nip. It was just one bite, but it was definitely a bit.

The trachea problem can also arise when he’s excited or playing, according to the vet. He may outgrow it. It may be partially from trauma from being tied up and it may heal up. But whatever the cause — and I DO think that’s why he bit! — I hesitate to place him in a home with a younger child (he’s five now, yes?)

On the OTHER hand — we have a pro dog trainer terrier expert fostering Larry and she says he’s around two at the most, not 3-4, and is just a wonderful personality. He was dumped off at a pound and we know nothing more about him than what we see. She says he learns VERY quickly and it’s clear that someone has done a lot of work with him at some point. He’s housebroken, lives well with others EXCEPT for alpha male dogs. Her take on him is that all the changes have been very confusing for him but that he’s a great boy.

Give it some thought. I do hesitate to place Jake with you because of your young’un. Larry I’d probably go for unless someone else has already pencilled him in for another home.

Interested…my file “should” be open. Jake would be a good fit w/ Stella & Lola. They’d love having a baby brother. We use harnesses strictly..no chokers no collars…harnesses only..as a general rule they are a lot less likely to escape from harness than anything else. We love our baby dogs and would love to add a young boy to the mix..think that would be the perfect replacement for our old Sam dale that crossed over a few years ago. Please disregard the cat, he can take care of himself. Call or Eml w/for further discussion. Hope to hear from you, Jill (706) 799-1668

Jill contacted me about Vinnie the 9-mo-old in MS. Her first email just said Jill, so I had no idea who she was. I asked her last name and she replied that she had been approved, etc. We need to know more about the 9-mo-old.

Jill adopted Vinnie. He is very scared and thin but coming around. Had a rough transport after being separated from his mom and the baby. Marti is working with Jill and I think things will work out. Will stay in close touch. He is warming up to the idea of human contact, esp with Jill’s husband.

down..the tech came out sweating. Apparently whoever did the neutering used

like a stainless steel twist/twine. Sounds horrible to me; but they said it’s

a clean heal for him. He actually seemed to be more relaxed at home after the

event. I wondered if it gave him some trust/confidence to know that we would

take him somewhere and bring him back. He is still terribly skiddish. We don’t

trust the martindale yet – don’t know how it works and are afraid he would

choke himself to death on it. Johnny harnessed him. But he’s only 50lbs so

was nearly able to slip out of the harness we use for the 60-65lbs girls.

Johnny had to wrestle him in the yard at the vet when he tried to get away.

Johnny is funny about this dog….he is determined to win him over. He keeps

saying “it’s like breaking a horse”….like he knows anything about breaking a

wrote him up for “serious” behavioral issues. She advised us it could take

several months/ years for him to be “normal”. …but asked that we at least give

him a 2month trial. He got his Kennel Cough and distemper booster today. He

needs a bath in a terrible way, but the vet advised we hold off on that as long

as possible given he is so scared of everythingI think we have a plan for getting the poodle ball off is tail

Gosh, so much to absorb! I’m glad you’re doing a lot of research on socializing. I like feeding the dogs rather than free choice for a number of reasons, including that with more than one you can monitor who is eating how much. It makes sense that controlling the food makes the pack leader, doesn’t it? Regarding the holding to pet, I defer to Marti, but here’s what works for my little girl, who is very skittish. The person who tried to hold her was unable to get close to her again on his initiative. Before I got her, she was probably cornered, and she’ll never be cornered again. I’d continue taking it slow with George, avoiding eye contact as you are, and building trust over time. There’s nothing like time to let him know that he is home and that you are in it for the long haul.

Regarding the urination, my guess is that now he’s marking. One idea is a belly band to keep him from doing that. You can get them online or probably in pet supply stores. But maybe Christina or Marti has a better idea. I’m also a believer in crates. There should be one tall enough for him, though it might run about $100. It would keep him from urinating, almost surely, and he wouldn’t have the chance to chew shoes or other things in the man cave.

When do you leave for California? Very exciting. I know George will be thrilled when you return, and it will really make him a believer when he prances out of the kennel with the girls and you are waiting. xx Claire Christina Prange

George is warming up to Josh – he allowed Josh to pet him the other day and licked Josh on the ear today.

Marti – do you have any recommendations as far as reading materials or specific methods of socializing. There is a vast amount of conflicting info on the net.

It’s going to take a commitment and contribution of time on our parts to get George comfortable with us. I feel once we accomplish that then we are ready to walk in public and experience new/different people/things.

Jill returned the contract for Pearl with zero dollars. Adopted dog from shelter duriing work as an ARG vol. Vinnie/George went to Ed’s for fostering and bring out of shell therapy. Jill had paid for George so no charge for Pearl.

Pearl – we brought home Sat. and she threw up overnight on Sunday and on Monday. We got the special food last night but husband didn’t listen to the directions (imagine that!!) to let her tummy rest for 24hrs with limited water. So she’s probably eating her puppy pads this afternoon. Will give her some small quantities this evening and see how that goes.

Lola’s warming up to her and Stella is still ignoring her. Pearl is being careful around them (a little timid). I think they’ll all be fine in time.

11/2015 – asked Bill to help with transport of Katy from Antioch, TN. Bill declined due to helping a friend come home from rehab but said to keep him for future request.

hi Dee & Melisa, Erin & Jamie and Cyn
Tomorrow is Nigel’s big day! The cutie pie is on his way to his forever family in Charlotte! Thank you all for coming together to help. ARG really appreciates it.

8 to 8:30 timeframe, Dee & Melisa to pick up Nigel from Cyn
                        Nigel is at Cyn’s Waystation.
The address is 2000 Stock Creek Rd. Knoxville TN 37920 Do NOT use Google Earth or Siri GPS. Here are directions:
                        Directions to Cyn’s Waystation
From Knoxville and I40 east, take Hwy 129 aka Alcoa Highway toward airport. From the middle of the bridge over the river, it is 10.1 miles total. It will be 4.5 miles until your first turn.
Follow Hwy 129 south and watch for signs to Hwy 168, Governor John Sevier Highway. It is a left exit. Take 168 East (the only way you can go there).
Go 3.5 miles to the first traffic light. There’s a gas station there. Turn RIGHT at the gas station onto Martin Mill Pike.
Go 1 mile. Turn RIGHT at Bonnie Cate school to stay on Martin Mill Pike. You will be following signs to Library and to Stock Creek Baptist church.
Go 1 mile. Turn LEFT at Stock Creek Baptist Church onto Stock Creek Road.
Go almost 1 mile. You will see a gravel driveway and an old barn on your right. There is a small blue marker that says 2000 and a yard sign that say ARI in big black letters — very hard to miss. Pull in and park next to RV but please don’t part on the grass — if it has rained at all, you’ll get stuck

Be safe. Normally I spend a lot of time writing a note about safety. It’s less risky with only one hand off. I’ll give my shortened version. Please be aware of switching cars and keeping a hand on the leash at all times. Nigel is a young, energetic puppy but he could still be a bit scared and unsure. Sometimes something as simple as a plastic bag blowing in the wind might spook a dog, so just be aware. Most of all, enjoy the day! THANK YOU!
Please let me know when you’re home safe. call with any questions.

Just thought I’d tell you we had to send Mike off to Airedale heaven four weeks ago. He had been suffering from lymphoma, we think, and was not happy. Toby and we miss him. He was such a well-behaved dog but became cranky and not interested in being tackled or challenged to play by Toby, and it was time.
