Hey sorry for the late reply. I have been kinda crazy since we got back from our honeymoon. I don’t know if Huey is the pup for us. Frankie just lost her job so I think we are going to put getting a dog on hold until she finds something else. Thanks for reaching out but we will let you know when our situation changes.
“Luke”is doing great! As far as we know he hasn’t tried to climb the fence, yay! He loves playing with his sister, Artemis and they run around the back yard playing and looking for what ever!! Oh we did buy one of those Apple things that goes on his collar in case he does escape! He is now crate trained and we are planning on taking him to dog training. Although I am still concerned with his left leg, the vet said he will X-ray if I’m still concerned. And like most Airedales he has a sensitive tummy and he eats the same leaves that our previous Airedale did!!! Weird! When he comes in from the hot hot outdoors he collapses on the floor with a THUMP! We have a doggie door so he decides when he goes in and out…we sure don’t make him go outside in this weather! He is now part of our family….

Welcome Back from your honeymoon and congratulations on an exciting summer! ARG has a gorgeous, bold, happy, high-energy, curious Airedale that I would like to offer to you for adoption. His name is Huey and he is 4 years old (birthday is 6/23/18), neutered, and 60 pounds.Huey originally came to ARG in July of 2021 from an owner who got him as a pup but was not Airedale experienced. Huey proved to be too much for him. He went to another home, but he quickly learned to take advantage of the adopters, who lacked leadership skills and thus were not a good fit. Huey has been in foster care with a trainer since coming back to ARG. He is doing well and the trainers love him and think he is a great dog.
Huey loves leash walking and understands leash pressure in a structured walk. The trainer says she walks him on a loose leash and in a structured walk with an informal heel. If he is permitted to go out in front when approaching something or someone exciting, he will probably lunge, so consistent leash training is key. He needs someone who can keep him active and interested but remain very much in charge. The trainer makes him wait until he settles before she leashes him. He wants to go go go and she insists that he wait – keep 4 paws on the ground and then they can walk. She said he was a quick study to learn what was needed to go on his leash walk.
Huey is easily excitable but responds well to rules, boundaries, and leadership by his owner. He does not exhibit food or toy guarding. He likes to play fetch, is good with grooming, and respects a few verbal commands, like sit, down, come. He likes/tolerates other dogs and would like to play with most of them but can be mouthy and use his paws too much. If a dog gets aggressive with him, he will defend himself. He is correctable in everything we’ve found. He did show aggressiveness toward a new intact male that came to the trainer’s facility, but with correction and redirection, he learned to tolerate that male and now they just ignore each other. Interestingly, he did not respond negatively to another new intact male at the trainer’s facility.
Huey is quite curious about everything, including cats. He doesn’t appear to want to eat them, just play. When they run, it turns into a game of chase. He is correctable; however, it will take time for Huey and any potential cat to get to know each other.
Huey is a water hound. He ADORES a spraying nozzle and a hose. He knows all his manners and commands — he just needs someone to enforce them with consistency. Then his manners are impeccable, really.
His trainer says that Huey is everything you would expect in a young Airedale – exuberant, bold and sweet, and at times, like a bull in a china shop! He is highly intelligent and eager to please, and a fun dog. His main issue was lack of impulse control
He is great at alerting you to strangers. When the UPS or FedEx person approaches or he hears their trucks, he will absolutely let you know. If he’s close to a busy road, he will bark at the cars. Again, with a correction and redirection, Huey will let it go and will settle. This can be resolved with a consistent message that it’s not his job.
Huey is a brilliant dog that needs to be engaged mentally and physically. He has been known to assign himself the job of guarding and has been successful in controlling things by barking and growling when his owner allows him to take control of a situation. He is much like a brilliant child in that if you don’t keep him stimulated and engaged, he will find something to do that may not be what you want.
Huey is in eastern NC. We could arrange transport to you in Charleston!

July 3 Urgent care issue
All-I was sitting in the ER vets about 2PM when my wife called our beloved vet to set up an appointment for Tuesday. It happened that Dr.Sauls was there and retured her call immediately to tell her to bring Patton in. I only had to walk across the parking lot to get her to Dr. Sauls, who spent a good hour with Miss Patton.
Though it is never easy to get them, her vital signs are close to normal. Slightly elevated heartbeat, normal temp, eyes and gums are good. Not that this is a surprise, but an anal temp probe is not in the cards for Miss P. The surgical areas look just fine-slight redness but nothing noteworthy on both incision areas.
She obviously has nausea and terrible diarrhea.
Dr. Sauls attributes that to either a reaction to carprofen or anesthesia or both. A secondary possibility is the giardia/cryptosporidium that appeared in her stool, but it was a very low load and we will address if needed later. Will send her records from surgery along shortly.
Patton was given an injection of Cerenia for nausea (that took all three of us there and a bit of misdirection. Biscuits didn’t work due to nausea.). She was sent home with a different antibiotic, pill form cerenia, a probiotic suitable with the antibiotic and soft GI suitable food.
She will call us tomorrow.
We are deeply grateful for Dr. Sauls’ help and for Robin’s timely call. She is a great vet and cares about all of her patients. I will go in and settle up on Tuesday. It will be 10 times better and 5 times cheaper than the ER vet, so we were very lucky.Chris and Robin Colman

Subject: Re: Patton update-a turn for the worseGood Morning, all. Sorry to bother you all on a three day weekend Sunday, but Patton took a turn for the worse yesterday morning. Her poop was completely liquid by early AM, threw up twice last evening and had an accident in the house sometime overnight. Also dug a hole and went to sit in it. Just took her out and the poop is still completely liquid-much harder to tell but it looked reddish to me. I did give her a Loperamide yesterday and she was eating some. She is refusing to eat today and I had to stuff the antibiotic down her mighty Airedale jaws, even with cheese on it. She does get up from time to time, but is mostly crashed. She is drinking water. I don’t see any issue on the incisions at the moment. Normally, I’d wait till tomorrow for a vet visit, but it is July 4, so the vet does not reopen until July 5. We can take her to the 24 hour vet, there is one in town. The better one is an hour away, and I don’t want her to sit in the car that long.
