2024 – Nigel is on prednisone and it makes him a 9 yr old garbage disposal. He’s had surgery to remove a tumor on his spine and a course of radiation as he also has a tumor on his heart. He’s still a sweet maniac though. We adore him and are valuing every minute we can have with him.

Subject: Lady Transport on Saturday 3/2

Hello ARG Volunteers – THANK YOU for helping on Saturday 3/2/2024. As always, thanks for your patience as we worked out drivers, meeting locations, times, etc.

Background – Lady is approx 5-6 years old and she was a breeders dog. Lady has had several litters of puppies. Her owner did not spay her in case someone wanted to have one more litter from her. When she gets into our care, she will be groomed, brought up to date on shots and spayed. She is going to a foster home where she will get this TLC. We will not post any reference to Lady on Social Media due to circumstances of her coming to our care, she may be referred to as Lilly!

Safety: Regular safety – please ensure that you are aware of Lady when opening car doors, transferring her from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Unless necessary, remain in car until transport transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured by hand on the leash; when allowing potty breaks – ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a dog in unfamiliar settings. Do not let her off leash at any time. Double Leashing is preferred if you have a slip lead to bring along for your leg of the trip.

Do not feel the need to walk Lady outside if you arrive early. Sitting in the car will be fine for her. (If you have a water bowl, please bring it so he can take a water sip between cars to keep him hydrated).

PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Lady cannot accidentally open a window or door! (It has happened! Airedales are very smart!)

                          Home Evaluation for David Coven

Long story short – David is an excellent candidate for an Airedale. He has a LOT of experience with dogs, loves his dogs deeply and cares for them like family. I would leave my dogs with him in a heartbeat.

He lives in a semi rural area and has a good setup for dogs both in and out of the house. The backyard is fenced but in conversation with him, I realized he isn’t someone who would leave a dog out in a fenced yard by itself. He will be very involved with any animal he owns. David’s home is beautiful and there is evidence of his love for his dogs everywhere you look. He is a retired art director and while he has only been in Asheville since 2022, he has totally renovated his home and filled it with artwork (his and others).

He has relationships with his neighbors and their pets. We talked about how amazed we were that people would just let their dogs out without any worry about where they were and he told me about a neighborhood dog who has a neglectful owner. Lulu (the dog) visits him daily, comes in and he feeds her when she isn’t being fed at home. He has tried to get the owner to surrender her but she won’t. That said, the owner doesn’t mind that the dog comes to visit David and that David is helping provide care to her dog.

David is calm, quiet spoken, funny and clearly intelligent. He has had many dogs in his life and realizes he needs another dog. I was so comfortable with him that I invited him over to meet Bob and our dogs and imagine we will see more of him (we have lots in common).

I’m happy to answer any questions you have that I might have missed on the evaluation form – but my recommendation is that he is moved to the top of the list for a dog that needs a great home.

I told him I would ask what the next steps are and get back to him. I hope you have a dale looking to land in paradise cause this could be it!

                          Susan

                                  Hello Susan and David,
My name is Christina and I am a volunteer with Mary in Airedale Rescue Group. I would like to introduce you two for the next step in our application process, the home visit. Susan is a long time Airedale owner, ARG friend, ARG adopter, ARG volunteer – and she lives in the Asheville area and will be the volunteer who you meet for the home visit.

Susan and David, please determine a time between the two of you which is good for a home visit. Understanding that your area has had recent snow, ice and cold – please do this when it makes sense for safety. I imagine you all are hunkered down and not going anywhere right now.

                                  Happy Sunday, stay warm!
