06/12/18: It’s official. The Haynes love her, she gets along great with Cooper, and they think both of them love having a friend.

      Sent contract.

05/23/18: Tracey & Rob met with River’s parents and me and took River to foster, hopefully, to adopt. They took her to Dr. Slattery at Walnut Grove Animal Clinic to have a couple of lumps on her back looked at. He said they are fine, not dangerous, and they would consider removing them at some point, say when she gets a dental cleaning.

06/09/18: They are going to keep her. She gets along great with Cooper and they already love her. She’s easy and plays like a puppy, not a 7 year old.

        06/12/18: Sent Contract.

06/11/18: Stephanie Greene texted me to tell me they got a standard poodle puppy over the weekend. That was their other favorite and they wanted a dog that their son could bond with over the summer before he went away to school.

They would be great Aire-parents, but Stephanie said after talking about it they think an Airedale’s prey drive would be difficult to deal with living in the country.

Subject: Re: New Maggie from Kernersville, NC AIREDALE RESCUE GROUP RELEASE FORM

We took her to 3 different vets to see what is wrong with her gait. One said nothing is wrong she just isn’t conformationally sound. Whatever that means. Another said she seems fine to him but if we say she runs funny maybe something happened to her as pup and it doesn’t show up on an X-ray…like a torn ligament etc. another vet said she walks normal although could see what I mean when I said “she almost looks like she is an old dog, like her hips/rear end hurt”. She has always been fearful of men, since we got her, and timid in general. We can guess all day, but we really have no clue why she is the way she is. She is a very odd dog. I have never had one like her.
As far as car rides, I have been taking her frequently to the park etc. and it has gotten better. The strange things about her are one day she gets in ready to go the next she just stands there. I guess and say “is it her hips? Maybe they hurts so she doesn’t want to get in?” We haven’t taken her to an orthopedic vet.
We do not know why she is aggressive with the other dogs. Sometimes it’s food or a bone, sometimes it’s because the other dog is barking. Sometimes it’s for what I would think is no reason.
She tried going with one of my daughters friends as a new home. It didn’t work out because she cried a lot. I think she was lonely. I just don’t know what her issues are or why they exist. It is all a guess. Our other dogs aren’t at all like that and I have never had one act like her. We are all just guessing, including the vet.
As far as timeline, we are moving and the sooner the better. I can’t get anyone at vet office on sundays but will go in there Monday as they never returned my call or request.
            Thank you,
            Gina

Morning, Gina. We did receive your relinquishment form. Thank you. I’ve copied three of our core group who will also be working on finding the right home for Maggie.

Keep trying the vet’s office so we can get her records. In looking back at our original conversation in mid-April, you mentioned that sometimes she seems afraid of men and sometimes, although she loves car rides, seems afraid to get in. Are you still seeing those things in her?

It’s great that she’s good with kids. Yours are 5 and 7, and two teenagers, right? As for her aggression with your other two dogs, have you figured out any particular cause? Is it over food, over toys, over your attention? Are your other two also spayed and neutered?

We talked about Maggie’s problem running and you said your vet can’t figure out anything wrong with her, but thinks maybe it’s a cartilage issue. Your vet also opines that she may have been abused as a pup as she is hand-shy and that it could be related to her unusual gait, bunny-hop. She does not have a normal scissor movement with her back legs. I forgot to ask you if she’s ever been seen by a veterinary orthopedist?

We did not talk about your timeline. When we originally spoke in April, you mentioned you might be moving to California. Is there a definite deadline for us to find Maggie’s new home?

(Also, since we’ve just recently had a Maggie that got a lot of attention on our web site, we will change your Maggie’s name on our web site.)

Thank you, Gina, for trusting us to find the perfect home for your girl.

06/09/18: Eric Edgerton applied with SOAR for Dinah or Della, the sisters in AR. Brad Ruth contacted me for a referral and I told them they are great. It looks like they will adopt one of the girls – Dinah, I think. I’ve pledged ARG’s volunteer support for transport.

Reason for giving up Airedale She has attacked my male and other female. She has always been bossy with them, but she has escalated to grabbing them by the neck. She didn’t break the skin, but did not let go with them crying and me yelling and running to her to let go. I had to physically separate her. I can’t risk her attacking and doing actual harm to them

Airedale qualities/personality (check all that apply to your airedale): Inside dog, Outside dog, Fenced yard, Crate trained, Housebroken, Sweet dog, Good with kids, Timid, Good on leash, Digs, Hates grooming, Good in car, Good eater, Dominant to other household animal(s)
Dog’s best qualities are: Sweet and loving. Calm, doesn’t jump up on people. Doesn’t bark nonstop. Good inside doesn’t jump up on furniture. Loves treats. Will sit on command, loves to go on car rides (even better if ice cream is involved) loves to go on walks, not runs. Enjoys being talked to and sometimes will speak back. She loves company.
Dog’s worst qualities are: Loves to excavate to hide her bone, may keep bone in her mouth for hours not moving. Bossy with other dogs and has pinned them in her mouth. Hates the weed eater and would love to destroy them all. Can be timid and scared especially of men. Will bark and cry nonstop in the morning to get out to go the bathroom when it is time, so I move fast because it can wake up entire house. Sometimes when she must kennel, she will cry or bark a bit when first going in but will stop. This doesn’t happen at all when it’s bedtime, as it is routine. On occasion has diarrhea, so I think she eats grass sometimes or something because it isn’t all the time and vet has never found anything wrong. And it’s about 2-3 a year, also vet said could be bad batch or dog food or food sensitivity. Or perhaps one of my kids not admitting to giving her people food.

06/10/18: Hi, Jenny. If I thought for a minute that Judah was Soldier – the lost dog from Atlanta – I wouldn’t hesitate to let them have him. Here’s the best photo of Soldier that they sent. They all show the most important characteristic of their dog that differs from Judah: Soldier’s ear-set is skewed out to the side; Judah’s is not. Judah has a good ear-set. None of the photos they sent me show his chest. Although Judah’s white is subtle, it is there. Molly tested calling him “Soldier,” but got no response. And Judah raises that paw, something Soldier never did. I actually found a better photo that Molly had sent a couple of months ago that shows the white much better.

I’ve communicated again with the daughter of the woman who lost Soldier and sent her the photo from Molly and the new one with Howard. I hope this puts this to rest with them. It is such a shame that their dog had no tags and no microchip. (Speaking of microchip, I never got his number from Molly. Will you send that to me for our records, please?)

And, as to your adopting him, we can wait until you meet with Stacy and get her evaluation and recommendations to decide. I hope he is home!

Thank you, Jenny & Howard. Have a beautiful day and enjoy that boy.

If Judah does belong to the Atlanta lady, and she can prove it to your satisfaction, it is right that he be returned. If he is not hers, or if she does not want him, or does not want to cooperate with you about the proper steps to reclaim him, or any other reason, we definitely want to adopt him. Just let us know. In the meantime we are enjoying having him in our lives and he is safe and loved.

06/10/18: Good morning, Britt. Your mother has contacted me again via text about Judah, saying she can see no white on his chest in the photos we sent. I’ll point you to the movie of him, attached again, where you can see the flash of white just before he raises his paw. I searched our database and found another photo of him taken, I believe, not long after we got him, the end of March. The white is quite visible. More telling to me is his ear-set. All of the photos you and your mom sent on Soldier show his ears skewed out to the side.

Judah is in his new home now and is very happy. If I thought for a minute that Judah was your dog, I would not hesitate to give him to you. Our mission is ensuring that our Airedales have the best home possible. Often when people come to us to surrender a dog, we instead try to help the people work through any problems or behavior issues so that they can keep the dog with their family.

                    We wish you the best.

06/09/18: JMC phone call with Jenny: Bad news and good news. Wed, house cleaner came over. Wiggly, waggly. If you need to go out of town, she’ll take care of him. Two days later, went ballistic at the door and the woman. No idea why. Got him outside and brought in and put in crate. That was concerning. Got in touch with Stacy and she is amazing. First evaluation on Thursday evening. He has really bonded to her.

Horse woman. Put him outside and then crate without lots of praise.

Still has diarrhea and she is running out of meds on it. She called her own vet who wants to see him.

Howard asked what happens if someone comes forward and says this is my dog. I told her about the woman in Atlanta.

Jenny is going to send a photo that shows the white spot on his chest.

06/08/18: Gina Mabie called jmc this morning and is ready to relinquish Maggie (in previous communications, I have her as Aggie). Again, I’ve asked Gina to fill out a relinquishment form.

Maggie is hand-shy and has been since they got her as a puppy at 10 weeks. She was very calm and quiet as a pup. They thought they’d gotten the calmest puppy ever. That is actually timidity and/or fear.

Maggie has some type of physical defect that affects the way she runs. She has had xrays and physical exams but nothing is broken. She is also hand-shy. The vet thinks perhaps she was injured as a young pup, perhaps by the breeder, and that caused an injury to her cartilage or something. She has known only love from them.

Gina has sent photos and videos that show a beautiful Airedale girl, in need of grooming, who barely wags. She bunny-hops. She doesn’t move her back legs in a scissor movement. She moves them together.

Wonder if she’s ever been examined by an orthopedist.

06/07/18: I spoke to Stephanie Greene yesterday. She is smart and knowledgeable about Airedales. She’s done a lot of reading about them because she’s never owned one. She had Westies for a long time, then adopted a 9-y-o Schnauzer and found that she and her husband both enjoyed having a larger dog to enjoy their active lifestyle. They hike and camp and run and go to their cabin with a pond and their Schnauzer loved all this. She said she sometimes walked him 4 x a day and he was still up for more. Unfortunately, he got a deadly form of cancer and died 4-1/2 years after they got him. That’s when they started researching other dogs and decided on the Airedale. She asked a lot of good questions about Airedales – their prey drive, their energy level, their ability to bond with their human, whether they’re a one-person dog, how they are with other dogs, whether they’re protective or jealous, and more.

I asked about their son, Carson 18. He’ll be home for the summer? Where is he going to college? How often will he be home? Going to Emery in history or classics. He won’t come home often – just holidays – even though he’s going to be close.

She teaches pre-school. Husband is CEO of insurance co. Must travel to St. Paul a lot. Gone several weeks out of month. It’s hard. She was concerned that the dog will bond to her and be jealous of her husband. I suggested that when she gets her dog that when her husband is home that he takes over feeding, playing, walking the dog as much as possible, so that the dog realizes that he’s his friend too.

Spencer’s original family had him and a female schnauzer with diabetes. He wasn’t neutered and he wouldn’t stop bothering the female who was sick. They gave him up. Always thought he knew he had been given up. He seemed to hold back somewhat. Had a little arthritis. Loved walks. Didn’t want to walk. Took to vet and did blood work. He’s just getting older. They have a great vet. Cancer in liver and spleen. Alice, their last Westie, died a year ago and had kidney issues.

Typical summer day – she’s usually home most of the day. Crazy life right now – they’re in Allentown, GA 200 people and have 15 acres and rural area. Slow pace. Own a second home in Macon because their son was in school in Macon 50 miles away. When he started driving they bought a 2nd home. They could Stay there in the week and go to Allentown for weekend / summer. School day is 7:30 to 1:00. Her mom lives down the street in Macon. Relatives in Allenton come by and walk her dog. She walks or runs every day. In Macon, a lot of other dogs and all on leash. Good for socialization. In Allentown very few dogs. Mother-in-law has dogs in fenced yard.

When Spencer was off leash they were right there. As he got older, they trusted him more. We talked about Airedales not being trusted to be off-leash and she understands. She knows that she’ll have to take him out on leash to go potty. We talked about using a long training lead for walks around their cabin or on their 15 acres in Allentown. She said she used a retractable leash and I told her I didn’t like them. You don’t really have control of the dog.

We also talked about the pros and cons of crates. The Schnauzer did not use a crate, but the Westies did. She would never keep a dog crated all day. But she understands that some dogs like the security of a crate.

All in all, I really liked her and the information that she volunteered and the questions she asked.

Talked to Stacy at her vet’s office and she immediately said that Stephanie Greene is wonderful and great dog mom and they did everything they could for their pets and treated them like members of the family – kept them up to date on vaccines and brought them in if there was any issue at all. Also kept them groomed.

I’m going to ask Bill Stephens & Barbara Calhoon for home visit.

This is a day 3 report! He is doing great, and it is looking promising that we will adopt. He is easier than our first Airedale in many ways. He has clearly had some training and is learning fast- so far he has learned to be gentler taking treats, better at heeling, going into the yard by himself to potty, and to sit before barging through doorways with humans. He is calm when with either Howard or I, but gets anxious when we leave him in the crate and whines a bit. He is never very far away from us.

He still struggles with diarrhea. He gets both the probiotics and anti diarrhea pills twice per day, but I have not had to give him anxiety pills.

Would it be ok if we put Frontline or Revolution on since he has been in the yard? Also, we would like to schedule a grooming because his cost is getting long. We will pay for these things but I wanted to check with you first.

The next step will be cat training and socializing with other dogs while on walks. We need some help with this. I am unsure about when the best time for this would be. You mentioned someone in Franklin and I had spoken with Noelle Blessey in Nashville on the recommendation of our groomer. (I am not sure if Noelle is certified.)

He is a very sweet and loving dog. We cannot believe he was a stray.

                            More

Thanks for checking with Molly about flea/tick treatment. I appreciate it.

I have been feeding him Natural Balance sweet potato and Salmon. That seemed to set the diarrhea off. Then I tried 4 Health sensitive stomach limited ingredients with no corn, soy, but with egg and potato. The jury is out on whether this is better. Mostly I think that both Molly and the vet are correct— he has just been through a lot. He seems to appreciate having access to the yard to go potty when he needs to.

Noelle quoted me 5 sessions : 3 in Home and 2 group over 2-4 months for $599. I am not married to the idea of using her. I guess we could swap the two group for more in home if necessary. Thank you for Stacey’s name. Ok with you if I call her to learn more about her approach? I can also tell her where I live to see if she is willing to come here for the same price.

Honestly, he is close to perfect. We just have to get over the other animal (cats and dogs) hurdle.

Morning, Jenny. I was just thinking of you as I answered an inquiry about Judah. He sounds like a smart boy learning so quickly. The waiting for walking through a door is very important. It can be used in so many other circumstances too.

The diarrhea is awful. Looking at Dog Food Advisor’s site, Royal Canin GI food contains chicken by-product meal and corn, ingredients that many dogs are allergic to. I think I’d move him to another food, something without chicken and without corn or other grains. If you wish to consult your veterinarian first, that’s fine and we’ll pay for him to be checked out.

I feel certain that Molly had Judah on flea/tick preventative and heart worm preventative, but I will confirm that and find out when he’s due again.

I looked at Noelle Blessey’s page and she seems good. Has she given you a quote for evaluation and classes? I see she offers group classes with owners and dogs together. Those are much more effective than sending him away to a boot camp. With him being reactive – at least according to the shelter and to Molly – to other dogs, it might be best to arrange in-home training, which it appears they also provide. Stacey Paich was going to charge $130-140 (?) for initial evaluation of 90 min, then a 4-lesson package for $112.50 each. If Noelle is in that range and you are comfortable with her, we’ll cover it.

It’s always hard to believe someone has lost an Airedale and not looked for it. But we get them routinely. We can only guess at the circumstances. But he’s safe with you.

Hi, Jenny. Molly said he is due for Heartgard now (on his vet records, she bought a single HG on 05/07), and had a 3-month flea/tick Bravecto that is due on July 5th. ARG will pay for those; just call when you go to your vet to get them.

I hope the new food works. But, yes, a lot of this is probably due to anxiety. Molly’s vet had prescribed Xanax but I don’t know if she was using that. Were any given to you when you picked him up. It appears that Xanax is safe when used as a short-term medication for anxiety.

Many people are using CBD (cannabidiol) oil for dogs for anxiety among other issues. You can find lots of information on this online. I tend to trust it more than Xanax. Here’s an article in Dogs Naturally Magazine: https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/cbd-oil-for-anxiety-can-it-calm-your-anxious-dog/

Yes, feel free to contact Stacy Paich at 909-489-8644. Let me know what she says.

Thank you, Jenny, for taking such good care of this boy.

Yes I got everything. Yes he seems to like it outside but it is hot so he has been gravitating to the shade and drinking water. He waited until I was inside for a minute and pooped good— no diarrhea.

He is thin! We will fatten him up some. He is sleeping at my feet inside just now. He has stuck close by. He seems to like car rides and playing fetch.

Molly said she took his meds and some paperwork to be handed over to you. Did you get them?

Hi, Lincoln. Thanks for the response. I like Finnegan better than Landon. And it works well with Riley. I understand Pickens County’s regulations. Had they told me that in the beginning, it would have resolved earlier. But all’s well that ends well and you have that beautiful little boy!

I’ll keep your application under “Assistance,” and we’ll call on you if we need help with transport or other ARG-related things.

Thank you, Lincoln. Take care of those boys and let us know how they’re doing!

                                Jackie,

Thank you! We’ve had a busy and exciting week getting Finnegan (we decided to change his name) settled into our house and with our other Airedale Riley.

Pickens County Animal Shelter explained that their bylaws require that they place pets directly to the adopting family and that they cannot place dogs with a third party. We only wish we had known that ARG wasn’t going to be able rescue ‘Landon’ earlier as we could have picked him up 4 or 5 days earlier. It all worked out in the end.

You are correct, we no longer looking for a rescue Airedale. 2 active ‘dales is our limit. I’ll continue to follow ARG on FB and see if there’s ever an opportunity for us to contribute in other ways. We did help ATRA relay an Airedale from MO to FL one time.

                                Best,

                                Lincoln

Hello, Lincoln. I saw on FB that you were successful in adopting Landon from the Pickens County Animal Shelter! Congratulations! We tried to get him into rescue, but the shelter said they would rather choose the adopter. They’ve obviously chosen well.

I guess this means that you are no longer looking for a rescued Airedale, is that right? Your application to ARG was in line for me or one of our other volunteers to contact you. But I think you hit the jackpot with Landon.

Please let us know if we can ever be of service to you and Ann with your Airedales, or if you decide you need a third!

06/04/18: They adopted Landon through the Pickens Co. Animal Control Center in SC this past weekend. JMC sent an email to them congratulating them.
