Hi Ian,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale.
Please let me know a convenient time to call you.
I will, among other things, want to discuss with you the fact that you do not have a fenced yard, have never had an airedale, and indicate you are looking for a puppy.
If the last is the case, I will tell you we very rarely have true puppies in rescue, so you would be better off contacting a reputable breeder.
In any event, we can go over all that when we speak.

Hi Holly, thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale.
There are a number of things on your application that caused me some concern. I will address them now:
1. You are under the impression that airedales are hypo-allergenic. I know they have that reputation, but it is not really true. What is accurate is they shed somewhat less than other breeds, because of the way the coats grow, but I can attest that they do in fact shed. They must be brushed, stripped, and/or professionally clipper groomed on a regular basis. I know that issue is important because of your boyfriend’s allergy.
2. You do not have a fenced yard. Airedales, being the largest of the terriers, have a strong prey drive. They really cannot be ever trusted off leash other than in a safe fenced area. So you would have to be totally committed to regular leash walks.
3. You have a very small dog. Again, the terrier instinct can easily kick in, and your yorkie’s introduction would have to be very very cautious.
4. You have no experience with airedales other than research on the internet, I assume. Have you ever met one or spent time with one in “real life?” We often tell well-meaning applicants, that we understand the interest, but airedales really are not for everyone.
Holly, I realize I have given you a lot to think about, but I want to be very honest with you. Please understand that the intent always is to make the best possible matches for our precious charges.
Think over the above items, and let me know what questions you have, and if you would like to make an appointment for a phone interview to discuss it all. I do not intend to discourage you from adopting another dog, but again, must be very honest and direct.

Fell through the cracks in the midst of resignations of Betsy and Paige.
Melissa contacted for HV; she courteosly replied that they had just been home visited and adopted an airedale from another rescue.

Responded that they have found an airedale puppy. I asked, just out of curiousity, from what breeder.

Kathleen,
I’m glad that Wayne has gotten an appointment set up for Tiger. That is very important to keeping a pet healthy and goes a long way toward extending their life.
After reviewing your application with the ARG members, we will be unable to approve you at this time. ARG is very adamant about keeping vaccinations and vet visits current and up to date. Also, Airedales are wonderful dogs but are highly prey driven. Even the best of dogs sometimes forget their manners when it comes to balls of fur such as a cat. On your application you specified that you would return a dog if it went after your cat. We are very careful about placing the right dog with the right home but again even the best dogs sometimes forget and will chase a cat down. It may be more logical to find a dog that isn’t as prey driven as an Airedale.
We appreciate you filling out an application with ARG and wish you luck in finding the right dog that fits with your family.
Sincerely,
Paige Still

Hi Paige,
We do give our dog Tiger her monthly heartworm prevention at home. It’s possible that she was not vaccinated since 2008; but I didn’t realize that it had been that long. We had to take our old hound Gabby in to the vet a lot over the past year before she passed away–we may have lost track of when Tiger needed to be re-vaccinated. When I talked with Wayne last night, he said he could go ahead and take Tiger in to the vet this week.
Please let me know if this is a problem with the adoption moving forward. I hope not…we’re very excited about the possibility of getting an Airedale!
Thanks, Kathleen

Hi Kathleen. I enjoyed speaking with Wayne yesterday. I was having trouble hearing and wanted to clarify an issue. When I checked your vet reference, the vet given had no record of your dog receiving vaccinations since 2008. Your husband said you give your dog monthly heart worm preventive.
I need to clarify that I called the right vet and that you haven’t gotten vaccinations or treatment at a different vet. Once this issue is clarified we can move to the next step.
Thanks,
