All turned out well for him and the Elliotts.
He was renamed Blue, as Duke is a big rival of these NC fans.
Training classes set to start w/o 3/19
from Christina to John Burns 3/18
hi John, Glad that you spoke to Heidi. Heidi followed up with Barbara that she would be willing to bring Birkdale to Raleigh. I was negligent in getting to Heidi this week on plans due to some other things that came up.
I wrote to Heidi yesterday and asked her when she could bring him to me, she offered to drive him to Raleigh. I would normally be available to meet her during week but it is quarter end for my job and not possible this week. If she can bring him to me this week or weekend, that would be great. I’ll follow up with you when I hear from her or at least touch base with you all mid week.

Hello Britt and Lindsay,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale terrier.
Your adoption application was forwarded to us from ATRA, the regional group which serves the midwest states.
ARG, website below, covers the southeast states. Since your ATRA application asks for pretty much the same information as ours,
I will not require you to complete another one. Please take a look at our website, to learn our approach and process.
Please let me know a convenient time to call you. A phone interview is the next step, then a home visit by a volunteer near you. Then assuming all goes well, we begin looking for the best possible match for your family and airedales available. I am retired, and can arrange to be available most any time for a phone call. I’d prefer to be able to speak with your husband as well.
We will have a number of things to discuss, including the age of your children, the fact that you do not have a solid fence, and your lack of familiarity with the breed.
Thank you again for your interest.

John Burns very interested. HV pending by Christina.
HV finally scheduled for 2:00 pm Sun 3/11
Below is my note to Christina re phone interview and HV request:
Just got off the phone with them; both on phone.
I liked them both very much.
Very forthcoming, and answered all my questions.
The three kids have been around large dogs since birth, and know what you can and cannot do around them.
Cocoa, the 100# lab/doberman mix, sounds like a typical goofy big dog who knows her strength and is very gentle. She is not quite three years old. She had been adopted as a puppy by a family member who suddenly was transferred for work to California. They took over.
Janice is at home with the children, not out working.
I asked them what drew them to Birkdale, was it that he was the only one listed right now? They said no, actually it was his age.
They would like more of a space in age between dogs (Janice mostly saying this) When they lost two dales within a few months it was very very hard for everyone.
The back yard is not fully fenced. They moved some of the existing fencing to create a dog run by the side of the house. As described by John, it sounds relatively spacious, and would not be used as other than an occasional place. John said Cocoa likes to lay out there and watch the world go by. I would like to hear your impression of that.
They asked me what a home visit entails. I laughed and said, it is not a white glove inspection. Just to get a feel for the home and yard, what the dogs(s) can and cannot do. Okay on furniture, etc.? They said they do baby gate off the upstairs where the bedrooms are, mostly because Cocoa would go and get the kids’ stuffed toys. Apparently there is a huge stuffed lion that they finally just gave to her, and she carries it around everywhere. That made them know for sure she needs a new buddy.
I told them I had communicated w/ Heidi, she had brought Birkdale up to date vet wise, and would be willing to speak to an approved applicant about him. John has family in Charlotte area, and knows where her suburb is. I have a feeling once they are HV’d and approved they will organize a road trip.
I said you might be able to arrange a home visit this weekend. John said, “I don’t know if that fits in with the family schedule,”
Janice interjected and said “Oh I think we can make it happen.” John said “I just didn’t know what the kids were up to.”
Anyway, would you please call to discuss HV plans:

Probably best to call that home #. Has voice mail if needed.

In less than 24 hours, the Elliotts realized this young rambunctious boy is way more than they bargained for.
Melissa will pick up, will go to Christina for fostering. Ideally Sat 3.12
Hi Barbara,

Hello Heidi,
I am an airedale rescue colleague of Christina Prange, whom you have communicated with about your airedale for surrender.
We thank you for trusting us to find him a great home. I know you contacted us a year ago, and then apparently changed your mind.
One of my volunteer jobs is to interview applicants. In fact I am going to be talking to a couple today who have expressed an interest in him. If the interview goes well, followed by the home visit by another volunteer to the applicant, are you willing to speak directly to approved applicants?
If not, I would be happy to be the go-between, but would want to speak to you about him as well.
As I hope you know, our goal is always to make the best possible match for an airedale and a family

Carole got cold feet and wrote to me that she thought Mike was rushing things.
I replied, addressed her worries, talked to her on the phone, and urged her to talk to the surrendering owner.
We were preparing to move Duke to JSAH for neutering and Christina called surrenderer and he said he and Mike had just spoken and it was on for the exchange Thursday March 1.
BL asked Bay to send out contract w/ stipulation for neutering.
February 28, 2012 at 9:56 pm in reply to: Private: 2021 John Burns – Raleigh NC 27613, No Fence #12540He posted on FB. Directed to our site, promptly applied. Per Christina, has IMd her several times re Birkdale.
From Christina:
2) This guy was IM’ing me on FB about Birkdale. He said that he needed to get his wife’s ‘buy in’. So either he applied and he did not have it or they talked. I did some snooping. They are both lawyers and she is with IBM legal. (Unless she was part of the massive lay off that IBM did yesterday! Been there, done that with them).
3) Good vet. A pricey vet who will charge you for everything and they charge a lot! sent
BL sent intro email 2/29 asking if all on board and to let me know when I can call when both will be available.
sent app to Sue Taylor for vet check.
Hi Barbara,
We can take care of the neutering if you want us to do so. I will call Mike tonight to discuss Duke.
I cannot tell you how much Carole and I appreciate your taking care of us.
I will be glad to drive to Knoxville next week to do the meet and greet and pick up.
Thank You,
Mike Elliott

Subject: RE: Duke, confirmed airedale 🙂
I just talked to Mike Snider, Duke’s surrendering owner.
He is thrilled to learn of your interest. I told him one of the other volunteers was concerned that you have a very small dog, since we know he hates cats. He replied, it won’t be a problem; he has been around other small dogs. Of course you will be very cautious as you would introducing any dogs.
He had Duke’s sire for 9 1/2 years, and said he was the greatest dog ever.
They would not be giving him up except that it is not fair to him as they will be traveling a great deal for work.
He says he is a typical rambunctious young airedale.
I asked if it would be all right to have you call them, talk a little about Duke, and make arrangements to pick him up.
As for the neuter, I don’t know how soon we can arrange for that to be done. If not within the week, then we would require that you have it done immediately at your vet. We would reimburse you for the expense, or deduct it from the adoption donation fee.

He would be glad to speak to you, and answer any questions you have. Let me know what arrangements you make.

Barbara I just wanted to let you know I decided to adopt an Australian Shepherd mix pup this weekend. It was also a breed I was interested in and it felt right. Thanks for the correspondence and good look in your future missions.

Largely a myth, in my experience. Airedales are very adaptable, very smart, although stubborn. That would be the challenge more than the age in my opinion. Bonus of getting a young adult is that they often come w/ some basic skills i.e. sit, stay, off (if you are lucky.)
So my point is depends on what you mean by easily trained. Not as compliant as some other breeds, takes effort and commitment and the rewards are vast.
Let’s talk soon. Just let me know a good time to call you. As mentioned before, my main concern is your e-fence.

i picked it up during a conf call b/c it said restricted
i could not talk to her and she said she would call me back b/c she did not want to talk in fron t of her husband about it since they were not on the same wave length.

did not understand that I was to contact you. We have secured a dog. Please remove us from the list. Thanks, Sam

Hi,
I did not hear back from you since this email below last week.
Am I correct to assume you have changed your mind about pursuing airedale adoption and/or decided to go a different way?
Please let me know if I should move your file to inactive.
Thank you.

Hello Sam and Penny,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale. We are always happy to hear from people who are familiar with the breed.
I look forward to speaking with you. Please let me know a convenient time to call. I am most available weekdays after 2:00 pm and am in and out over the weekends.
The fact that you have a e-fence is of some concern. You don’t indicate how long you have been dog-less. Did you have an airedale in your current home?
In any event, that and other things we can discuss when we speak.
