      Hi Abby,

Thank you for looking into adopting an airedale terrier.

I look forward to speaking with you. Please let me know a good time to call you. I am retired and can be available most any time at your convenience. Preferably when your husband is also available. Weekday afternoons after 2:00 are preferable.

We will go over a number of things about our process. A couple of the things I will want to explore more is:

*You have two small dogs. Most airedales are fine with other dogs, but can play rough, so that is something that always needs to be

      monitored.

*You do not have a solid fence. It is a rare airedale who can be trained to respect one. Because they have such a high prey drive, they will easily broach the barrier and off they go after that rabbit on the golf course. In other words, you cannot rely on it as containment. You really have to leash walk only, just as if you have no fence. In time, with work on good recall, that might be able to be relaxed, but don’t count on it.

I don’t intend to discourage you, but these are my concerns right off.

You are right, we do not have very many airedales in our care right now, but we never know when that will change.

We will talk soon, and get you along the path to be one of our “families in waiting.”

        Sue Taylor’s vet check report

Hi Barbara, I spoke to Mary Jo at Dr. Blankman’s office I Florida. Don’t know if it makes a difference but according to Mary Jo, the adoptee, goes back and forth between Florida and the Carolina’s. She thinks they have a vet up in Charlotte, but isn’t sure. So I don’t know if you should ask her about a vet up in Charlotte or not. But her current pets are up to date on both vaccinations and flea and tick prevention…..

            Hi Christina,

Sorry for this late reply, we have been getting the house ready for show day , and I was away last week. I’m sorry it didn’t work out with the Burns family.

Birkdale gets grouchy and growls when he is disturbed when he is sleeping, and also doesn’t like sudden movements, which startle him, but has not nipped anyone. Sometimes when I needed to move his bed, he would also get protective over it and growl.

I’m glad he is doing okay with you and Tuna, and also glad that no one was hurt. Do you think that it will take long to find him another home?

            Heidi

I needed to tell you that Birkdale did not work out with the family in Raleigh. He was growly and attempted to nip a few times in situations with the children.

Everyone is safe, no one was ever hurt but the family made the decision to not keep Birkdale. Birkdale is safe with me at my house. He is on the couch. He follows me around all day. He is very happy to see me when I walk in the door. He and Tuna are great together on the walks. He finds dog beds in each room and is happy to sleep on the dog bed as long as he is with me.

            Couple of questions

I have seen his growly side. He does not like to be approached on the bed, couch. I have never seen him nip though. Is that the extent of his growly? Does he ever get so growly that he nips as his escalation?

Do you think it has anything to do with not feeling good? I don’t see any evidence of him not feeling good but just checking with you?

Thanks Heidi for any insight. I want you to know that he is safe with me.

                Returned to Christina 4/9/2010

It is with a great deal of regret that I write to let y’all know that we are not going to be able to keep Birkdale / Fozzie. He has an unpredictable urge to snap, and I am not comfortable having him around my kids. He’s a cool little dog when he has someone one on one, but he has gone after Janice twice, once catching the skin on her arm (not breaking it), and just a few minutes ago, when Janice picked Lincoln up, he growled and attempted to bite Lincoln’s leg.

I am sure this is in part because he’s in a new place, but we have really tried not to do anything to scare or startle him, and he seems otherwise to have settled in nicely. He sleeps in the middle of the floor, barks at visitors, and figured out our routine pretty quickly. But he has snapped at us when we walk by him, and when someone is carrying a large object like a laundry basket. I just think he needs a quieter household with one or two adults in it.

I just spoke with Christina and we will drop him off at her place this evening.

Thank you for the opportunity, and please keep us in mind.

                  Hello, Barbara.

Thank you for checking in. I need to put the application on hold for about six months. My husband is having some foot surgery in two weeks that is going to make walking normally difficult for several months. I think a new dog, especially a new Airedale, would not get the walks and attention they need and deserve. I am glad you asked and look forward to talking with you in the fall.

Thank you, Barbara, for responding to my email so quickly. And thank you for your condolences about Charlie. If I said he was eight, it was a mistake, he was nine, which is still way too early to lose this wonderful companion. We did have both dogs as puppies and just fell in love with the breed.

My husband is out of town for the early part of the week and I do need to talk with him more in depth about taking in a rescue ‘dale. Both Ollie and Charlie were cat-tolerant and Charlie rather liked the attention from our older cat. If the cats invaded their space, they would let the cats know they were unwelcome but never in an aggressive way.

I will talk with my husband and be back in touch with you soon.

Again, thank you for your quick response.

We are always especially happy to hear from dale-experienced families. My condolences on your recent loss of Charlie. Eight is way too young. Did you have both Charlie and Oliver since puppies?

We rarely have true puppies in rescue, but it is not uncommon to have youngish ones 2-3 yrs old.

Please let me know a good time to call you, preferably when both you and your husband are available. I am retired also, so can be available pretty much any time convenient for you.

We will need to speak about how you manage airedales and an e-fence. And I am sure you know all airedales are not cat-tolerant. Sounds like the dales raised the kitties in your case.

Look forward to speaking to you.

                          Hi Thais,

Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale.

I understand how you would like another canine companion to join you, your husband, and Jed, the jack russell.

There are couple of things in your information that gives me pause. I understand you live on a multi-acre property, with no fencing.

As I am sure you recall, airedales have a strong prey drive, and no matter the acreage, they can take off and not necessarily exhibit good recall. So I would want to know what your plans are at least in the early weeks and months to ensure his/her safety.

It will take just the right airedale who will adapt to running free and with five horses. We have some adopters who have dales and horses, and only a few are comfortable with the horses.

So I hope you will be patient with us. Of course, our goal is always to make the best possible match for the needs and expectations of the new family, and the comfort of the airedale.

Please let me know a convenient time to call you. I can be available most any time at your convenience.

May I assume Brent is on board with this idea?

Also, can you please orient me as to your location? What part of TN; where is the nearest recognizable town? A home visit is part of our approval process.

Finally, how is your name pronounced, please.

                            Hi Barbara,

I spoke to Kathy at their vets office and they spoke so highly of her. She was a vet tech there for many years, and have been long term clients and have always given their dogs excellent care. She spoke of her love for Airedales and how she lost her last one, who was trying to protect her. So from this end they sound like great people to adopt one of our Dales!

Also they are always kept up to date on shots and flea and tick preventative.

Let me know if if it all goes well!

Lindsay Hopkins called me. Apparently Barbara Oimas also sent their app to Debbie Butler, who has contacted her as well. They have not yet spoken.

She just wanted to be sure there was not a duplication of efforts. I explained she is with a different group and she was free to deal with either or both of us.

We had a nice chat. I was not completely ready to decline her, but did go over my concerns.

Christina, would you contact her to do a home visit? I told her this week was crazy busy for you at work, but you would be in touch in the next week or two.

I suggested she go ahead and arrange for a phone interview w/ Debbie Butler, that perhaps she would have a dog that would suit her family. Just asked that if she did, to let me know.

I told her we would be glad to have her on our approved list for the right match for her family.

                              Nice young woman.

At the end of our conversation, she thanked me for my honesty, and asked if I thought she should look at other breeds.

I replied I thought that was a good idea, but that the right airedale could be good for her family. She said there blue heeler was a very good dog, but when I asked if they had thought about getting another one, she said probably not.

They got the blue heeler when youngest child was an infant, so both children have been around dogs. Plus big animals when they visit grandparents farm in VA.
