Hi Barbara. Thank you for your reply. I too am retired and am home most days so any time is fine to call. We do have 2 grands ages 15 and 6 and one on the way. They live in Orlando and unfortunately only get up every coulple of months or so. They are not here on a regular basis but we do need a dog who get’s along with children. Also I think I said either sex on the application but my husband says he really prefers a female. Looking forward to your call. Andrea

Hi Andrea,
First, condolences on the loss of your sweet Sadie girl. I say 10 is too young.
Secondly, I apologize for the delay in contacting you. I have been away, and our other volunteers have also been traveling, etc.
It is always a pleasure to work with people who know the airedale spirit, with its many rewards and challenges.
You indicated wanting a dale three years or younger. None available right now, but that could change at any time.
Sometimes a perfect match appears right away, sometimes it takes a while.
Do not be concerned about our home visit policy. We have a couple of people in the Savannah area who can do that for us, when the time comes. Who knows, there may be an airedale play date in your future!
Please let me know a convenient time to call you. I am retired, and have a pretty flexible schedule.
I look forward to working with you and Larry.
One last question before we speak. Are there any grandchildren yet? Most airedales are fine with the little ones, but not all.

Hi Heather,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale. I understand you contacted one of our other core volunteers recently, who explained to you that we rarely have very young airedales in rescue.
I am not sure what airedale you were indicating interest in. We did recently have a rare young airedale who was quickly placed with a longtime volunteer. We intended the website posting to make that clear. If it was not, I apologize.
In any event, it is quite unusual to have true puppies in rescue. So if that is your desire, you may be better served to contact a reputable breeder in your area. Or perhaps seek out another rescue group who might have puppies occasionally available.
I probably would have discouraged you from adopting an airedale of any age.
This is primarily due to the age of your children.
Although airedales are indeed known to be good, tolerant and gentle with children, not so much with very young toddlers they have not been raised with. It is mostly because as large dogs, they can inadvertently be clumsy.
Good luck. If I have misunderstood any details you provided, please let me know. And finally, I am very sorry for the sudden loss of your previous airedale. It can happen to anyone, that one split second, but always heartbreaking.

Hi Lindsay,
You and I spoke on March 19.
We went over your application, which had been forwarded from a midwest rescue group. I expressed some of my concerns, but encouraged you to pursue the idea if you wished, with the understanding of proper handling of your e-fence and the safety of your young children.
You had also previously heard from Mrs. Debbie Butler, who heads a separate and not-affiliated rescue group in NC. I recommended you go ahead and continue with her to see if perhaps she might have a suitable match for you and your family. I do not know what her policy is regarding e-fences; we are somewhat flexible on these matters, some groups are not.
So I am checking in to see what your current thinking is. No matter what, I feel sure you will provide a great home and family for the right dog. It may not be an airedale at this time.
Please drop me a note to let me know if we should keep your application active.

May 15, 2012 at 10:09 am in reply to: Private: Maria Pelaez – Huntsville AL and Medillin South America #12644Hi, Barbara. Thanks for your email. I understand better now, and feel very disappointed at the same time. I know that check-in visits are part of the process, but I also think pictures, even videos, can replace this, especially if the adopter is someone who has adopted before and has a good record. But I respect the group’s policies.
I will be in Alabama this summer, for about a month. Actually I was planning on doing the adoption process while I’m there, so that the dog could spend some time with me before I put him on an airplane. And we will probably move back there next year, but I don’t know the exact month… probably in the Summer.
As for the weight of the doggies… Sara was about 50, and Paco was 60. The day Paco died, we were walking around the neighborhood, the 2 dogs and myself, and when we were on the way back, about 3 blocks from our house, Paco started breathing very heavily; he was trying to get to the house, but he could not, he kept collapsing. Finally, 2 houses away from ours, he could not get up any more, and died. I was very traumatized by it, because the whole time I wanted to lift him and bring him into the house, but it was pretty difficult.
And this year Sara started getting sick, to the point where she could not get in the car by herself, and it was very difficult for me to do so, to lift her and put her in the car so that we could get to the vet.
By the way, my husband was out of town on both occasions, they both died on me while I was completely alone.
So that’s where the preference for a “light” dog came from, but this doesn’t mean I want a smaller breed… it’s just a little trauma I have to cope with.
Thanks for your time, for reading my stories. Hopefully there will be a next time.
Best regards.
Marta

Maria,
I did not take your comment as arrogant at all, just an earnest desire to understand our policy. I regret I wasn’t clearer to begin with.
I cannot speak for every rescue group, only mine for which I have volunteered almost since its inception twelve years ago.
As it happens, your address does make a difference in eligibility. It is not the only factor, it is one of many.
Our adoption process requires regular check-ins over email, phone, and physically, both before and after adoption. If for any reason the dog needs to be re-homed, we require that you return the dog to our rescue group. While it does not happen often, occasionally the placement is the wrong match for reasons which we can not foresee. Therefore, the dog is placed within our region of the SE United States. While this may seem restricting, it is in the best interest of the dog that he/she remain within the regional area so as to be physically available for visits and re-homing, should that become an necessary option.
There are some regional groups who are adamant that a dog in their care not be placed more than a day’s drive from its foster home. Florida is an example, who never adopt outside the state. We are a little more flexible, partly because we cover a wide area of the Southeast states. We only occasionally place outside our area, and only if we know there is a local volunteer committed to take responsibility for follow-ups. Once in a while, if a former adopter moves out of our area, we will place a new dog with them in their new state.
I hope this clarifies my earlier message.
I sincerely hope you do find a canine companion. You did not answer my question of how much longer you will be in Columbia. Again, I would be happy to hear from you when you return to Alabama.
By the way, my three male airedales are 71, 64, and 50 pounds. I suppose I could lift the “little one” if I had to, but it would not be a fun event.

Barbara, I will look back in my file and see if I can find any reference to this name. I do remember a couple in the Huntsville area that took a rescue….. lost him….. but I think found him again? I can’t remember because it’s been several years ago. But I will look. I remember the dog because he was one that had been owned by a drug dealer and lived in the guy’s car with him……or something like that. The couple that took him were young…..from South America as I recall, no kids…. so this doesn’t sound like it is them….. she had had an Airedale in S.A. that she brought to the States with her…….
I’ll look……….

Do you remember these folks? I can’t find them in our database, but might have been in a different name.
Or perhaps you helped with a different group?

Hi, Kathee. Sorry to take so long to respond; however, my sister is in the hospital and I have not been on my email since last week. I will re-activate your application and will contact you or have one of our other volunteers contact you soon to discuss your desire for an Airedale. (I am at work so I can’t call.)
Thank you, again, for considering a rescued Airedale.

Subject: RE: Airedale Rescue & Your New Puppy!
Good Morning Ms. Jackie,
It has been a while since we have talked but wanted to touch base with you once again. I never got my Airedale Puppy it was suppose to be back in November but that didn’t work out, than I was on the list for a pup from the same breeder now in May however due to some circumstances with the breeder I have chosen not to proceed. I truly want a Airedale but don’t want to get into a bad situation with a not so responsible breeder. I’m thinking all of this happened for a reason I would appreciate being able to get back on your list to be a future adoptee of a Airedale. If this would be acceptable please contact me once again to proceed with what ever is needed. Thanks in advance for more information. Warm Regards Kathee
Barbara,
I was finally able to connect with Abby. We have not been able to arrange a visit as she has had busy w/e’s with work. I leave on Weds for London and will not return until the 24th. Abby said that she is not in a particular rush and would be fine to wait – unless you had a female in mind that was ready to place (I said that I did not believe so).
Please let me know your thoughts and if you are OK waiting.
Thanks!
Above from Keith Lehr. I told him fine to wait and that if a suitable female came along, I would let her know and find someone else to do home visiti. -BL

Subject: Dog transfer complete!
The transfer of Mattie is complete! I drove home with tears in my eyes from the pain of parting with her. She was a good girl for me,and I’m glad she had a burger and fries for lunch. BTW—she had 4 cups of Purina ProPlan Lamb and Rice for dinner last night, and she ate every bit. She’s carrying a little extra weight, and could probably stand to lose 10 pounds or so. (Course Goober could stand to lose a few pounds himself…) I would put in her ad that she is cat-tolerant. She didn’t seek the cats, but she never seemed aggressive toward them. She never started a fight with Goob because I wouldn’t let her, but she’d be a happy camper by herself. She MIGHT be OK with a puppy because she could dominate it, but if you moved her into a house with a resident adult you might have problems! She slept all night by the side of my bed. (Goob sleeps on the couch) That was fine except I couldn’t get out of bed in the middle of the night. During the day, she slept in the guest bedroom or my office – she liked being near me. I told Rebecca that I thought she was drinking a lot of water, but I have nothing to base that opinion on. She arrived thirsty and it just seemed to me that she never caught up. It could have been excitement and a little dehydration – just something to watch.
Barbara, I think the Thundershirt is a great idea for Layla! My friend, who is a vet tech, swears by them. She has a dog who was terrified of thunder before she got the shirt, and now he just goes and takes a nap during thunder storms. She was so impressed that she got one for one of her other dogs who has a mild fear of thunder.
Layla is still quite timid, but overall she is doing well. She eats well, is very well house-trained and is doing better with her allergies now that she is getting a better food (without the corn and other grains). Her eye is improving rapidly – probably thanks to the drops she gets every 8 hours.
Tomorrow she will have her bad tooth extracted and have her teeth cleaned (they really need it). While she is under the anesthesia, the vet will remove the black growth on her left foreleg. She is getting prettier as her hair grows out a little. I hope she can be adopted soon. She’s such a wonderful girl. Unfortunately, my dog, Sam, is not thrilled with her presence. He’s getting up there in age and maybe he just doesn’t deal well with change. She wants to play with him, but he is not interested.
I will keep you updated on her progress.
Thanks,
Donna
I will be going out of state week after next, so I hope she will have a permanent place by then. I hate to think of her being shuttled about.
On
Going to Gale Ford
Phone interview 4/25
Vet question clarified. She has a home in FL and goes several times a year. The FL vet is her nephew, and takes care of all her routine needs. If she needs a vet in Charlotte she goes to Banfield.
We talked about airedales and little dogs. Her two yorkies are used to being around big dogs, she does not think it would be a problem.
Re e-fence: When she moved to this home, she had plans drawn up for a very attractive wrought iron fence. The homeowners association did not approve the plan, so she was forced to go for e-fence. The yorkies respect it. I told her an airedale might not. She seemed to understand.
There are many dog owners in the neighborhood, all of whom leash walk. She has never seen a loose dog.
She said she and her husband have wanted an airedale for some time, especially the husband.
She came across as quite eager, quite a talker (aren’t they all)
Will look for HV candidate.
Marti took her to her vet
Marti was upset with vet b/c they would not give rescue discount
The vet did give the exam for free though
She is spayed. It took 3 vets to find that she was spayed. None of the vets at Martis vet could find it
Marti had a training lesson after the vet appointment and her friend who is a spay/neuter vet found the scar. She thinks spayed later in life, probably around age 4
Initially Marti’s vet thought that she was 2. Based on her teeth. After looking at her eyes, she estimated her to be age 6-8
HW test results tomorrow
Microchip – she will register.
This is how I am doing the microchip now. I use Airedale Rescue Group name and my address in the primary. I use Bay & BL’s phone #s as alternate back up.
In the back up person, I am putting my name, my phone # and Bays’ number.
The form is mialed in and registered. The new owner is responsible to replace their name as primary. It does not cost anything additional – just a name change. If they want to put another person in the back up instad of me, they can or I am happy for someone to leave me as the back up. I think this is a good way because if the new owner never registers the form (for whatever reason), then ARG has spent $55 ish for nothing. At least with our registration, we know the dog is traceable. I’d say most of our adopters would change the registration.
marti said she is beautiful dog. She is very sweet and she loved the Italian Greyhound that was at the lesson with Marti. She was going home to intro to her pack. Her worry is Pixi but she said Pixi has to get over it because they are getting a new puppy soon – Portuguese water dog for Rick for his competition dog 🙂
THoughts on Lamb
1) I have told the people who were interested in her through Lynn at Campground to apply
2) Marti’s friend may have interest – especially now that the age is slightly lower
3) Mary Schuette inquired about Birkie but this may be a great fit for her as well.
