Hi Alex.
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale.
Before we go any further, I want to clarify a couple of things.
While airedale terriers indeed are lower shedders than many breeds, they do shed. Just take a look at my house, and my vacuum cleaner 🙂 It is unfortunate they have been labeled along the way as hypoallergenic. If any of your family are highly allergic, I would not recommend them. If allergies are controlled, it would mean diligent brushing/combing and frequent grooming. At $60.00 a visit in many areas, it is an expense to consider along with all other vet care and high quality food. Many people, including us, have learned to groom at home. I just don’t want anyone, especially the dog, to be unhappy and uncomfortable.
You mentioned Alistair, who is listed on our website as a courtesy. You would need to contact the person shown on the posting directly for more information. A mix, likely with a golden retriever, they guess, so probably a shedder.
The other issue, having nothing to do with allergies, is I am not so sure an airedale is the best first dog for you as a family.
I don’t know what sort of research you have done, other than you had a friend with one.
They can be very stubborn, the challenge is balanced with the rewards, but they take work to be a happy family member. The whole family needs to be involved and united in the approach to setting boundaries, etc.
I do not want to necessarily discourage you, but I want to be very honest and straightforward with what I have learned over the last 12 years volunteering and sharing my home with airedales.
Finally, please clarify what your address is. The application came through incomplete in that area.
Thank you.

Stacey,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescue airedale to add to your family. It is great that you had some exposure to airedales, even for a short time.
I am also fond of labs We had a black Mac for 12 years; he was instrumental in training quite a few foster dales when we lived in Athens GA. It was very tough to say goodbye, but their eyes tell you when it is time.
One thing that occurred to me as I looked over your application: I wonder if it might be better to wait to adopt until Duffy’s time is up. I know you do not want to disrupt his last months. We can talk about that, among other things.
Please let me know a good time to call you. I am retired, and can be available most any time at your convenience. Weekday afternoons are best for me, but happy to accommodate your schedule.

Hey Barbara,
Thank you for getting back to me and I apologize for taking a bit to get back with you. This holiday week has been go go go.
I know the cats are an issue with most terriers, especially older ones. We figure we will have to get a puppy if we want to add in an airedale to our family (unless a younger adult one was raised with cats). However, I want to rescue our next family member and we are prepared to wait for our next one since the cats make adopting a little harder.
As for talking with us, after this weekend, I am free after 5:30 pm Monday thru Friday. I think Tuesday I’m rehab training a Great Dane with North MS Great Dane Rescue, but I haven’t heard back if that time was good for the foster mom yet. Chris is in and out for the next couple weeks working extra shifts preparing to go back to school. When we know his school schedule he will be home more in the morning when I work, and vice versa at night. So one of us will be home more. I’m also looking at going 100% self employed, so that would be a really nice schedule change too! Can you talk to just me first or do you need us both? If it helps any he is totally supportive of whatever I want, which is quite a great trait in a guy I think 🙂
Let me know what works for you and if you have any other questions.
Hope you’re having a great holiday week/weekend!

Hi Ashley,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale. It is great you are familiar with the breed.
Having training experience is another big bonus!
My main concern is your cats. As you probably well know, many airedales are not cat-tolerant. That adds an extra caution to making the best possible match. Jazmine and Toby have both been placed, but we will likely have some new “kids” coming in soon.
Please let me know a good time to call you. I gather evenings or weekends would be best time for you and Christopher to be home?
I am retired and can be available most any time at your convenience.
Look forward to working with you.
Good phone conversation 6/29
Their previous dogs adapted quickly to the e-fence. She understands it takes time, and dogs are not left out unsupervised.
Their current airedale is named Peewee. She seemed almost embarrassed to tell me. But he is so much smaller than their 70 # one who recently died, they found themselves calling him that.
Very nice woman. Bay has said she would contact Scott Fancher for home visit, and a reminder he never paid for Bodie.

in heat! Wow, we got her safe in the nick of time.
Glad that Zachery named her Lucy – that is nice of him.
Yes, one of many Lucy so she is LucyZ to me!
Did we know she was in heat? did Nicole say that?
Good job! That was a long intake!

Zachery named her Lucy but we will call her Lucy Z to avoid confusion with the other Lucys.
Arrived late, stuck in traffic at B’ham. She went straight to vets for care. She is in heat and
they will determine spay for later. Chris will pick up and take to pet parlor when ready.
I’m sure she will be groomed. Gave permission for Chris to order vaccines, hw, parasite
check, microchip and spay when ready.
Spoke to Mr. Tarpley, very nice. Said I would give him an update next Friday. I would
definitely give him a dog. J Looking for young girl.

June 29, 2012 at 8:52 pm in reply to: Private: Nancy & Phillip Rokicki, Harrison TN Want Male adopted F from IL in 1/2021 #12784Hi Barbara,
Thank you for writing. We work at home so you could always contact us here.
Yes, Toby was of real interest to us because he looks almost exactly like Fairfax!! I only check the group page occasionally and while I love them all he is the first one I’ve “fallen” for. Keep me posted on what goes on with him. Staying with his foster mom might be the best for him.
It took me 10 years to convince Phil we wanted an Airedale, then he saw one in person and agreed. Now, with Fairfax getting older he believes we should think about getting another. They are characters and I love them. Fairfax is a bigger dale, 70 pounds…not fat. He is taller and before his hips started bothering him he could stand on his back legs and put his paws on my shoulders. I’m 5’5″. So, I think if we get another I would like a larger (not the huge) Airedale. Of course, the smaller ones are cuddly…! Fairfax has been a laid back Airedale or maybe that is because we are, and he is very opinionated! also maybe because I guess we are!
We were in Florida for 18 years until 2007 when we moved here to Harrison. There we worked with the Sunshine Airedalers rescue group, on the board and home visits, and considered a couple of times adopting but never did, for whatever reason.
As I said keep me posted on Toby.
Stay cool in this heat. And give your elder dale a pet from me and an arf from Fairfax.

Just spoke to Emily at their vet’s office and they said that Fairfax is current with all his shots and is on a regular schedule with his heartworm and tick preventitive…they sound like nice people.

Hi Barbara,
I am so glad to hear from you to know that the process is underway. In checking the paper work we were given on Baxter, the representative that signed the contract from Michigan is Shawn Jones. The date is 7/26/2005. I believe she may have been the foster mom. About a week ago I contacted ATRA and I spoke with Mark Howitz from Illinois to inquire about an Airedale recently posted on their site. We lived in Illinois until February 2011 when we moved to South Carolina. He did have all the information regarding Baxter on his computer. The dog we had inquired about named Patches was already in process of being adopted and he suggested I contact you since we are now outside Atra’s footprint which makes it more difficult. He said he would like to help us so if you think it would be helpful to you he can be reached at mhowitz@aire-rescue.com.
I can be available any afternoon to speak with you as well. This afternoon at or after 4:00 P.M. would be a good time if that works for you.
We look forward to working with you Barbara and are anxious to bring a new ‘dale into our loving home. Our boy is clearly a little lost without his buddy. Frankly, so are we. The house seems a little too quiet without all the playing going on.
Best regards,
Carol

Hi Carol and Patrick,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale. It is great that you are familiar with the breed, and also with the rescue process.
Do you recall the name of the volunteer you worked with at ATRA in Michigan?
My condolences on the recent loss of one of your ‘dales. I am sure your remaining boy is anxious for a new buddy.
You mentioned Toby. He has had a lot of interest, as you might expect. It is possible that his foster mom may ask to keep him, which is always an option for the foster family. So clearly he is quite a charmer.
We do have a couple of new dogs coming in, but as they are not officially ours yet, we won’t post them until they have been vetted and put in foster care.
I am retired and can be available most any time to speak at your convenience. Weekday afternoons are best for me.
Look forward to working with you.

Just spoke to Leslie at the Bonnie Bray Vet Hospital and she said that they have been with them for quite awhile and are frequent visitors there with their animals. Always up to date on shots and with heartworm preventative and they have also boarded their pets with them….so sounds good on this end……..

More photos and an update on Toby (who I am now consistently calling “Toby”). Yesterday I took him to be bathed and groomed (at least the start of an Airedale clip until his furnishings grow out) in preparation for his surgery Wednesday. You might be able to see in the photos, especially #803 and 804, how thin he still is. I am feeding him 4 cups of dry food a day with a 1/2 can of canned food mixed in (split into an AM and PM feeding), plus treats. He’s gained a lot of weight but he is still pitifully thin. I’ve been taking him to PetCo which is near my home, a few times a week and walking him around. He no longer cowers or tucks his tale when people approach. He even took the initiative to approach a couple who stopped to talk to me when we were walking in the neighborhood. He now plays with toys (the last photo, #806, is a shot of everything he’s hauled out of the toy basket in the past few minutes). This weekend I attempted to walk both Jake and Toby at the same time. Mornings are much easier — he’s more subdued in the mornings. But he is now walking on a lead — with an Easy Walk harness — without thrashing about, and he is getting the hang of heeling, though nothing consistent yet. I’ve worked on “come” commands, but not sit or down because I didn’t want to scare him by using any pressure to show him what I wanted from him. He is definitely house broken, has not had any accidents in the house, and yesterday pawed at the back door when he needed to go out.
He HATES crates. I’ve been crating him in a large wire crate (couldn’t get him near a hard-sided crate) whenever I leave the house and at bedtime, but I have to pick him up and put him in it because he won’t budge on his own; nothing other than Jake ever encouraged him to willingly go into a crate, and using Jake doesn’t work anymore. The groomer said he broke out of their crate 3 times (She also said that he did really well. Sensitive on his front feet so I’ll start touching them. She took a lot of time, with lots of breaks for him.) He also has to be picked up to put him in a car; he actually balks and pulls away so hard that if I didn’t have a harness on him I think he’d slip a collar. Once in the car, though, he is fine. And he gets out of the car okay.
At the end of each day, although I think we’ve made a lot of progress, the next morning we always start off with Toby being timid and distant. Today was different. This might be a fluke, but last night, partially because he’d had such a long day with the groomer, and partially because of the sad, sad eyes he was giving me, I didn’t put him in his crate for bed. He curled up on the floor in the bedroom and stayed there all night. This morning when I woke up, Toby jumped on the bed and licked me!! (I know, I shouldn’t encourage that, but that made my day) He’s been playing with his toys today, running around acting like a puppy. That just does my heart good. Right now he is standing in front of the fireplace, looking at his reflection in the glass and growling at himself, ha ha.
I will let you know how Wednesday’s surgery goes.

From Sue re vet check.
Hi Barbara,
Spoke to Mary at their vet’s office and she was one of those that didn’t talk a whole lot but did say they are expecting them in soon for Lucy’s vaccines, that they have sent out reminder cards for them. Haven’t seen them since last year so I don’t know if that is good or bad……like I said, Mary wasn’t much of a talker!

Good morning. I was not allowed to adopt because we did not have a fence at the time. So we bought Bella and then put a fence up. My husband mentioned getting another Airedale and I wanted to try to adopt again. Age doesn’t really matter she would just have to get along with other dogs. Bella is friendly with all dogs of all sizes. I can be reached at all hours. I am also retired but took on a “lunch lady” role for something to keep me busy. I chose that job so I could have my summers off!! I will look forward to talking to you. Thanks, Kathi

Hi Kathi,
Welcome back to Airedale Rescue. Your name sounded familiar, and sure enough you applied back in 2008, and decided not to adopt at that point. Must have been then you purchased your Bella.
Jazmine did go to her new home yesterday, so the only female we have now is Maddie, who is probably older than you are hoping for.
We never know who will come along next, so I’d like to move you along our process so that when the right one comes along you will be ready.
Please let me know a good time(s) to call you. I am retired, so can be available most any time at your convenience. Weekday afternoons are best for me, but any time can work.
I look forward to working with you again. Yes, most of the core volunteers with ARG are still here 🙂

Well, I spoke to Andy at their vet’s office and he couldn’t say enough nice things about this family. He said that their Airedale, Bella was a “real looker” and then he went on to say that he is very fussy about his animals and he wouldn’t hesitate a minute to let them have one of his animals! So looks all good from this end!

BL sent intro email 6/20, asked for good time to call.
The vet just called me back and said that she could highly recommend them to adopt an Airedale from ARG. According to her they are great people who really go all out for their Airedale. She was also interested in ARG because she has clients looking for Dales and she always recommends rescue and now is glad to know about ARG!

40 miles north of Chattanooga. May be difficult to find HV.
Good phone interview. Very enthusiastic, ready for a companion for young Tucker.
Rachel teaches piano at home, so Tucker is used to being around young children. They probably will have kids in the future, but probably not for 5 years or so. She probably will be returning to full time work, but not had an offer from recent applications. Keith works 6:30am to 4:00pm..
Yard is securely fenced. Tucker is not out alone, only if someone is home. He prefers to be inside generally, especially as the weather warms up.
