Keith Lehr will home vist week of 10/29. He and Julie are both away until then.
BL:
She called me within a few hours of my intro email.
She works at B of A in Charlotte, and lives just north of there.
She stated she is major caregiver to father, 83, and sister 56. I did not ask what impairment, if any, the sister has.
That is why she moved to Charlotte, to be near both of them. She expects to return to Texas when she retires and/or her father dies.
Snow, the schnoodle, is about 11 pounds. When Raleigh the airedale died about a year ago, they got a a mix who died suddenly after a short time. She asked her son if maybe they should get another small dog, and he said, no mom, I can’t walk down the street with a little dog.
I talked about Beo b/c the son sounds like a strapping young man who could handle a big guy. They will talk it over. Apparently the website description gives the impression he is a discipline problem. I said he was basically untrained, but not really a problem other than he would take a firm hand and consistent work.
The thing that bothered me was that they would let Raleigh the airedale out when not at home and he always respected the e-fence and never wandered. I said I was quite surprised by that, and any new dog could not be expected to learn that right away, if ever.
So need home visit.
Hi Barbara–
Just wanted to let you know that I did a site visit this morning at the Mosca house. Addison, my girl ‘Dale, went with me to check it out.
She felt very at home there. It is a great set up for a big dog, with plenty of room inside and out to romp. The fenced area is small, but secure, with extra wire fencing at the bottom to keep diggers in. The house is nice, but Kathy seemed to take any new dirt that Addison brought in in stride.
Addison enjoyed playing with the numerous balls that the three boys have piled up around the house. Kathy was aware that she needed to make sure that none of the balls presented a choking hazard.
I believe that the Moscas would make a great family for placement–both very relaxed and responsible, in ideal proportions. The family is active–all of them are runners–and they plan to run with the dog on the numerous trails nearby.
It would be a great placement for a spirited dog, but one who is not too wild or headstrong.
Addison gives it Five Woofs out of Five.
Hope this helps,
All best,
Elizabeth
10/16 Asked if they can foster Shelly.
They adopted a young dog last week from Atlanta; have senior, almost 13 Beuregard who doesn’t want to eat; Seamus, ours who has been diagnozed w/ pancreatic=itis, so much on their plate right now.
BL called 10/15. Good conversation. The boys have been asking for a dog for years. They waited until they were settled in a home w/ fenced yard, and no plans to move for a long time. Husband is on board. She is home mostly except when ferrying the boys here and there.
She acknowledges that airedales can be challenging. They would fully intend to enroll in obedience classes.
I made sure she knew airedales are among the lower-shedders, but not at all hypoallergenic. She understands, and her doctor told her no dog is completely hypoallergenic. She says their allergies are fairly mild.
I am going to ask Elizabeth Schoenfeld to HV. If not her, Wendy Wenck, as CP suggested.
10/4 Woman named Laura Nuhn from Neuse Golden rescue called. They are an approved family with them, but probably need a doodle of some sort as there are allergic concerns.
Hello Barbara–
Yes, Kathy Mosca is a former neighbor of mine. They are a really lovely family, with three active and very smart boys. I don’t know if an Airedale is the right breed for them–but I think it could be–as long as they realize how physically strong and willful Airedales can sometimes be (as well as loving, fun and funny companions). They are looking for a low-shedding dog. I had suggested a ‘doodle.
I had recommended they contact Airedale Rescue, not only because you do good work, but because you know the dogs well and can help make a good match. I would be happy to be a mentor to Kathy (although I’m not sure you could say that I am a model for anyone–except for I do have two very happy dogs–albeit sometimes ill-behaved ones).
Please call me if you would like to talk more about the Mosca family as a candidate for placement. 919-489-9831.
Thanks again for all you do for these great dogs!
Elizabeth

Hi Christina,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I have seen Beo on the web site and for all intensive purposes he looks like he could be a good fit. Alicia has a little concern regarding his size in that Gypsy weighs over 90 lbs as well and she’s not positive that she wants another one quite that size with Bella running around at a whopping 5 lbs. But that is certainly not a show stopper for us and she understands that another “big” dog would certainly give Gypsy something to do and someone to play with.
What is a larger concern at this point is last weekend some new neighbors moved into the house directly behind us. And while our back yard isn’t tiny, it certainly isn’t that big either (mostly long and skinny, so the back door is pretty close to the fence). Anyway, the new neighbors have two dogs, one lab and pitbull. I don’t think either is mean, but to hear the “discussion” this week between Gypsy and the pitbull you might get the idea that both are pretty mean and ferocious. I think there might be a little bit of territory issues going on in that Gypsy might think that is her yard too but more probably just their way of saying “Hi” to each other.
We know the girl of the couple that bought the house. So that’s a good thing that we do know her and is a family friend. We are going to have a “play date” or two as soon as we can so the “kids” can get to know one another without the fence and hopefully get past of the cross fence bantering. But until things settle down with that, I think introducing a new kid into the mix might not bode well for anyone just now.
I feel sure this is just a little more than just their way of saying “Hi” and that they want to play, but it sounds much worse to the laymen. So hopefully it doesn’t take too long for them to get use to each other and we can get on with our normal daily lives.
I’ll let you know how it’s going in a few days or so, or after we get them together.
Talk to you soon,
Greg

Hi Greg, not sure if you have seen our website lately – there is one boy named Beo that is a fantastic boy dog. He’s a big boy but a gentle giant. He is living with a female ‘dale and his foster mom thinks that he is doing great. Would you be interested in him? He is in the Atlanta area.
***Caveat – She does not have a dog as small as your Bella. Beo gives no indication that he would harm a small dog. However, that is something that you’d have to be very careful with – as with all dogs. I’m just thinking extreme caution for Bella.
Barbara, I am going away this weekend, but will be home Monday afternoon. So, Monday afternoon, Tues or Friday would be a good time to talk. Abby is on doggie prozac & it has made a HUGE difference. I had put her on it about a year ago for chewing & took her off after about 6 months, because that behavior had stopped I put her back on about 6 weeks ago at the vets suggestion because she would very deliberately pee in the house. Unbelievabley she has stopped doing that as well. I guess she will be on it for life. I don’t think she was treated well before I found her at 8 weeks. On the positive side she loves other dogs & people. She is very playful & smart & devoted. I’m not sure how she would feel about another female, so I am looking for a male Airedale. I would prefer a younger dog. I am not ready to go thru losing another one. Jake was only 10 & seemed in perfect health when his spleen ruptured & surgery revealed the cancer. He only lived 4 months after that.Looking forward to talking to you. Mary PS Is Beo still available?

Hi Mary,
Thank you for looking to adopt a rescued airedale, after the sad loss of your last precious one a year ago. Sounds like you have you hands full with the mix you rescued from the park. Has she settled down? Is the medication a doggie prozac or did her thyroid need to be balanced? Just curious.
How does she behave around other dogs?
We have worked with Linda Baake several times in the past. I know her to be a caring and responsible breeder, and she has helped us with boarding a few times, before we found a foster home or forever home for some of our charges.
Please let me know a good time to call you. I am retired, and can be available most any time at your convenience. I look forward to working with you.

Good conversation 10/2
Her mother is doing better; it was her second stroke in six months. This time they found a blocked artery in brain; likely will require surgery. She is 51.
Leslie works for her father. Often is the only one in the office, and could bring a dog to work.
Her cat hates little dogs, but is okay with big ones.
Her home was her grandparents.
Her town is between Johnson City and Knoxville, 30 mi e of K’ville.
Need HV suggestion.
11/3 BL wrote and asked if she wanted to continue in process.
Mrs. Lawson,
I am definitely still interested in rescuing. The last time we talked you mentioned that you would have someone come out for a home check.
Let me know if you can set that up.
Thanks so much for the follow up!
Leslie
Hello Barbara, I have always lived in Kentucky on a farm and just moved to Goodwater Alabama to start a new job and purchased another farm with ten acres. The nearest large town would be Sylacauga, Al. it is about 6 miles from my house in Goodwater, the next largest town is Talladega which is about 18 miles from me. The best time to cantact me is around 4:00 pm for the next 4 days which I have off and 7:00pm after that when I return to work. We have only been here since September 19th and I have not had a chance to find a veterinarian here, I have asked the people I work with to recommend the best one in the area but have not gotten a solid answer yet, growing up on a farm my whole life we always wormed and doctored our dogs ourselves, and usually purchased the shots and gave them to our animals, much less stressful on the animals than the “ride to the vet and wait shakes” they all seem to get, and only used the vet when it was something I was unsure about. I always raised cattle, horses, goats and even pigs, and always taken care of my animals. The veterinarian in Williamsburg was Dr. Culver phone number 606 549 5444, and the one in Corbin, Ky. was Dr. Majors, phone number 606 528 0736, which my wife used more than I her name is Jennifer Lawson. I have been looking for an Airedale ever since my dog Cody passed away but I would rather find one that already needs a loving home rather than get one from a breeder. Airedale’s are such special animals but people seem to get them because of their beauty and do not know that they are very instinct driven and head strong and need to be trained to control their instincts and fears of things they cannot control, such as storms. It breaks my heart when a family that a dog has bonded with has to find a new home, it is very confusing and traumatic for the dog, they are so very intelligent and do not understand why this is happeneing to them, that is my problem with breeders that selll animals like these to people that think they are just like every other dog, I think there should be classes you are required to take before you ever get such a special animal I could never break an animals heart, animals do not fail people, people fail them. I look forward to hearing from you, Alvin

Mrs. Lawson,
Sorry for the late reply. My mother had a stroke this past weekend so my days have been spent in the hospital.
I enjoyed reading your feedback to my answers.
It is good to know a little more info about dales.
You may call me anytime, 865-591-5203.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Leslie,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued airedale.
Although you are not that familiar with the breed, at least you have met at least one in-person when you worked at a vet office.
Some of our adopters have 9-5 jobs with no one at home during the day, but when a mid-day dogwalker/break with mom can be arranged, it usually works out well. You will need to consider having a dog crate available, or a baby gate to restrict area, at least until he/she can be trusted with the run of the house.
It is good that your cat is used to dogs, and big ones at that. Most airedales are NOTcat tolerant, but many live peacefully with cats once they learn are part of their pack. A cat outside in the neighborhood? A whole different story.
Requiring having a fenced yard is not a hard and fast rule with our group. But it is always good to have an area the dale can go out to now and again.
Only when you are home. We strongly are opposed to dales out for hours at a time alone. Their prey drive is so strong, that if something irresistable goes by (a stray cat, rabbit, squirrel) they are gone.
Please let me know a good time to call you, and we will go over our process.

Spoke to Kate. 10/2
Discouraged her from adopting an airedale for many different reasons.. She was appreciative of my thoughts, and thinks maybe not an airedale now would be best.

I do not have a contact there. They continue to honor the $10 day rate
Surrendering owner told Christina that they are moving and will be living at her in-laws for a long period of time. Would not be allowed in house. CP went a got, put in boarding kennel near her.
Need that contact information.
Offered to Galen Merrill, he needs to consult w/ wife, and get her buy-in. Their prior record proves that is essential.
If not for them, CP will ask Weibes if they can “foster.”
