Barbara, had a nice visit today with Virgilynne at her home. Their 150’acres is an airedale’s delight and their current dog, Andy, was quite welcoming. Had no problem with Annecy sticking her head in his house or picking up a bone that was in the yard. The dog’s house is heated and carpeted! My one concern is that the property is not fenced for a dale. That being said, the house is pretty far from the street and they are aware they couldn’t just leave the dog outside. They have two outdoor pens and Virg talked about crating, as well as bonding together in obedience classes. They had no problem with Annecy coming in the house and I told them how all my dales were definitely house dogs as they like to be with their people. Virg especially walks quite a bit around the property which has 3 small lakes and also trails. They also have a couple of horses which Annecy found intriguing. The fencing along the road is for the horses, a paddock on each side of the driveway, hence not very effective for doggies. Andy is a really happy dog and I think the prewetts would be good, responsible owners. I made sure they understand that the fencing was a concern and I am confident they will be conscientious about the dog’s safety. As I said, it was an Airedale’s heaven there and the dog would be very happy and well treated. She mentioned wanting a younger dog to better bond and I do understand wanting a younger dog but also let her know how well rescues bond once they are in a forever home because they are so appreciative. Barbara, I spoke to Michelle at the vet’s office and I generally got a good report. He basically sounds ok but he gives all his pets their shots, everything but rabies, although the vet’s office discourages it. He declined a heartworm test in August so I guess these are things you might want to talk to him about?

Thanks so much! I am indeed an early riser! I am at a business meeting all week, but am available in the evening or 7:30 am. Key me know what works for you and I can give you a call.

There aren’t too many early folks around!

I would prefer that you have some time set aside to talk to me. Lunch time can be rushed a little when you are in meetings all day.

What does the rest of your week look like? Or perhaps an early evening call might suit? I am retired so can be available most any time at your convenience.

P.S. I see you are also an early riser.

          Hi Barbara:

I would like to speak with you about our application. I do not think Elizabeth conveyed the incident accurately to you. Did she mentioned her 80+ lb dog lunged at me and then attacked Gizmo upon arrival in our front yard? Needless to say the meeting of the two dogs did not go well. I do not think her perception of our dog nor of my husband was at all accurate. Our dog had never shown aggression toward another animal ever until that moment, nor has she since.

Please let me know when might be a good time to give you a call. I am in a meeting most of the day today, but can return calls during lunch.

          Thanks,

          Janene

          Hi Janene,

          Welcome back to Airedale Rescue.

Your name sounded familiar, and I looked back and saw you had applied in 2010 and inquired a few other times.

In 2010 we declined to adopt to you at that time. Your GSD charged the young woman who home visited with her airedale and ripped her slacks. She also did not get the impression that your husband was on board with the idea of another dog.

It seems you have the same GSD and now two cats. You seek a 40-60 lbs dale as Gizmo is not comfortable with large dogs. Around 50# is the smallest I think we have ever had for a dale that was not ill.

If things have changed in the last two years, or I have misunderstood any of the above, please let me know in what way.

Clearly an animal lover on a large farm of 150 acres. Portion fenced and large dog pen.

Have had many animals, from chickens to pot bellied pig to goats; currently Andy the lab mix 60# and two horses.

Never had an airedale but interested.

No preference m/f but under 3 yrs old preferred.

Need to find a home visit– 30 miles west of Atlanta.

Both their current vets recently retired, so are going to a Banfield clinic in their town for now.

I am sorry, I have been dealing with the family health issues. I think as much as I want another family member in our home, I truly need to wait a few months. My sister has been in and out of the hospital, which means I keep her 2 labradoodles while she is in the hospital, and actually I just returned them to her last night.

Adding a new dog into the mix right now is just not the right thing to do for anyone. When I get a new member, we will need time to settle in without a bunch of disruptions and time schedules being up in the air.

Again, I apologize… I am hoping that after the holidays we can revisit this idea. I am hopeful that her health will stabilize, after she is settled, my father has pending surgery also, so as caregiver, for both of them I am running ragged. Lucky for me, my Dad lives in the Pines, so other than immediate convalescing and helping with shopping and laundry, he should have sufficient help up there.

                          had a good visit- –

she is terrier experienced, large dog experienced, they have large fenced back yard. we discussed escapes, digging, fence jumping etc. seems to be an ok home to me. would I leave my berkley with her for the weekend? yes. I think she’s capable. the only thing that was odd is her husband isn’t a dog person. he tolerates them apparently. they have a cat (with whom berk wanted play time). but no red flags.

Phone interview 10/31 She called me.

She misses her schnauzer, but thinks she would like a larger dog this time. Her husband works 3 hours away so is home on weekends only. Sounds like her daughter and son visit often. The 3 yr old grandson comes arouind a lot also; he is the son of her son, but sounds like he and the mom are no longer together, although the mom called toward the end of our conversation.

So she is testing the waters, I think. Had a lot of questions, mostly good ones. She may look into schnauzer rescue.

She does have a cat. The kids have dogs; the grandson loves son’s beagle who puts up with anything.

She owns her own business, a framing shop in Savannah. She would like to be able to take the airedale to work, if the right dog.

Will ask James Kleen to HV.

Hi Christina! Hope this finds you well. I have an update on Shelly. She is 41.5lbs and approx 6years old.

Her physical exam appears to be within normal limits. This means her eyes, ears, mouth, nose, throat look good. Teeth appear strong with minimal tartar. I do smell bad breath, so antibiotics could help clean up that odor. Skin and haircoat are ok. Heart and lungs are ok. No murmurs and quiet lung sounds. Seems to be good body weight and condition. She is vaccinated with Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, Corona, and Bordetella. Her fecal exam was clear of any parasites. Her CBC (red blood cells / white blood cells) are all normal. Her liver, kidney, pancreas, proteins, electrolytes and glucose are all normal. We took a chest radiograph to see if the heart or lungs had any obvious changes from the heartworm disease. The heart appears to of normal size and shape. The lungs show a little activity of some sort. Not sure what it is or if it is related to heartworms or not. I do know the lungs sound quiet. I’m saying we will need to watch the lungs down the road.

Shelly is very friendly with everyone. She was very easy to treat. She enjoys treats and wags her tail at other dogs. I think she might just need to gain her confidence and then she will show her true airedale personality ! She will be ready to go home tomorrow (SAT) before 12 noon or any day next week. She must be 100% confined for 30 days. Leash walk only to potty. No running or jumping!

Let me know if you have any questions. I will mail bill to you if you like. Thanks again for letting me help!

We paid the vet directly. As far as being reimbursed, can we first see if Casha might be able to stay with our family…or do you have another family that already wants her? The interesting bit to our story is that the day that you emailed us, we had sent a $300 check for a downpayment for a lovely puppy airedale in Wisconsin. We just want to make sure that Casha and a puppy would be a good mix and that you don’t already have plans for her.

Does that make sense? I haven’t quite had enough coffee yet this AM! ha!

                                Subject: Update on Casha

Ok….another update. The vet just called me and told me that he would like to take care of Casha’s hernia so for a total of $188 she will be spade (she was swollen indicating she was about to go into heat), get rabies shot, have a pain relieving shot post surgery, and get her hernia fixed. I’ll keep you updated.

                                Leslie 🙂

What a gorgeous girl!!!! I picked Casha up and took her to get spade and rabies shot. They noticed a hernia but I decided not to get that corrected immediately unless y’all would like me to. The vet said it wasn’t necessary at this time. I’ll pick her up at 5 today and plan on loving her up. I’ll send pics soon. Contact me at 931-216-6045 with any questions!

                                  Hi Judi,

Thank you for looking into adopting an airedale. We received your application at our site yesterday afternoon 10/25.

Although you have not had an airedale before, it is good that you know something of the terrier with having had schnauzers.

Have you met any airedales? They certainly are the largest of the terrier breed, and have personalities and quirks of their own.

It sounds like your husband travels for work, is that correct? You are on your own during the week?

Just to clarify one item: you indicate a broad spectrum of interest in ages; just know we almost never get true puppies into rescue.

Please let me know a convenient time to call you to go over your hopes and expectations and tell you about our process. Willingness to foster was not cited in the application we received.

You sent a somewhat bewildering message to our general info email address yesterday or the day before saying you could not register, that you had tried contacting us several weeks ago. We do not have a registration process; we do not let general inquiry emails go unanswered, so I do not know how that confusion arose.

The important thing is that you found the right place now.

I look forward to working with you. I am retired, and can be available most any time at your convenience.
