Hi Carol
She sounds like she is doing great! She never bit Tuna or started a fight and probably a lot was my fault to keep them separate so when they did meet, she was very jealous and everyone was on leash or behind gates.
If she is still coughing this week, then perhaps she should go to vet and allow the dr to examine her. Lets talk when you get back. I am glad she is alone and just fine. That does not surprise me. She seemed to enjoy the home environments

Hi Christina,
We’re still in MB. Will be heading back tomorrow. Pumpkin did great in the car and at the house here though she still likes to sneak on the furniture and is giving the cat nextdoor a fright. We’ve left her alone several times and she’s been fine. She still has her cough. I’m assuming it’s kennel cough and am keeping her from getting too close to other dogs. We’ve been walking the perimeter of the dog park here so she can meet dogs through the fence. Sometimes she shows the usual friendly dog-meet-dog behavior. Other times she barks so enthusiastically that it is hard to tell if she is friend or foe – tails are wagging though so I think probably friend. When you said she didn’t do well with Tuna what did you mean? Was she aggressive? We took Pumpkin to the beach this evening. She enjoyed the walk but didn’t care to get her feet wet. She’s behaving like part of the family now. Will be in touch after we get back.

Subject: Home visit
Hi Barbara,
I had the opportunity to visit Karen Terry and family on Saturday evening (6 July). The new addition to their family since their application is Parker (mix breed rescue). Parker has only been with the family about two weeks and you would have thought he has been with them from a pup.
The loss of their Airedale Toby brings strong emotions, both joy and sadness. Toby was definitely loved and cared for. The family is pet comfortable, the cat being petted in the Dad’s lap and Parker by the daughter. Parker gave me a friendly welcome sniffing out my Airedale Charlie. The home is roomy, clean and pet friendly with a large spacious yard. They do have the electronic fence with the sensor set back well from the street. I talked with Karen, one on one, and she described the bond she shared with Toby. Only someone who has had an Airedale would understand her description. Since Blue is cat friendly and Parker is such a sweet dog, this family gets a thumbs up on their application. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to help with Airedale Rescue.

Asked if she was ready, as her beloved Toby died less than a month ago. She said yes. Very clear she and her husband and daughter have a heart for rescue.
They very recently acquired a mix, about 50 pounds, from local rescue, but both still want another Airedale.
Would prefer male under 5 years.
I did the “caution w/ cats” spiel, and she said she and Toby, and she and the new one are buddies. Must be quiet a tolerant cat.
Have asked Belinda Mize to home visit. They are about 5 minutes apart.

He said they are dedicated to the breed and then he asked about dogs we had available so I just said we had a few that we had just acquired and he said he sure hoped that one of them went to this family because they would have a fabulous life and home!
Pretty impressive!
Thanks,

Hi Barbara,
I had been scheduled for our home visit on Monday but had to reschedule for yesterday evening due to a medical emergency– long story! I’ve been in catch-up mode all week as a result so Im sorry for this update being so late.
I really liked the Probst family and think they would be excellent adoptive parents for a number of reasons.
First, they appear genuinely to be dog people equipped with lots of stories and experiences. They are very familiar with all the unique ( and often strange) personality traits of dogs – of a variety of breeds. They talk dog talk. In that context, we discussed the potential ‘baggage’ from the adoptive dog’s prior experience that might need to be accepted or addressed and they seemed to be both familiar and understanding. I gave some examples of Ziggy- who is the perfect adoptee in spite of the health limitations and some quirky ‘issues’ we caulk up to his working through some latent frustrations. Showed lots of pictures –of Ziggy just wanting to hug-it-out and the Probsts seemed very eager to accommodate adjustments as long as it did not involve viciousness that could endanger themselves or, especially, grandchildren.
Second, their home seems well equipped for a member of that size. Although it’s not an especially large home, there is plenty of room for the grown new one and they plan to have the adoptee sleep in their room ( preferably not bed) at night with them ( our kind of people!).
I thought the yard size, configuration, and most importantly, security, looked fine. In addition to the metal fence there are two outside dog houses that at first seemed a tad small- but then they assured me they had been not only been used by the previous Lab but had as well been entered by a large human to be on the safe side!
We discussed the exercise and mental stimulation required by the breed and they, especially Nancy, were looking forward to walking and playing after work. Mr. seemed loving and eager to exercise, but he is a smoker ( permitted to smoke outside only!) and I don’t see him as the exercise type. He very much seemed like the loving on the inside type.
I think the closeness of Nancy’s sister with the ‘daycare’ issues was a great plus.
They seem to have a good relationship with their vet and look forward to, understand, and are prepared for the grooming requirements as well as perhaps additional healthcare issues that may arise from the ‘baggage’ issues of a rescue. We discussed some of Ziggy’s health issues— which came in handy when I needed to rob his skin Prednisone prescription for my own problems this weekend.
They are very eager and I believe were very sincere.
Please let me know if there is anything I missed!

Additional info from Barb next day:
Good morning Barbara,
I was happy to be involved in the process!
I did not meet any of the kids or other nearby relatives – although we did discuss.
We did talk about Nancy’s dog fur allergies and grooming – and I should have mentioned that in the report. She does not believe that she will experience problems with the Airedale, which was one reason for choosing that breed. They are familiar with the grooming requirements and she actually plans to hand-strip on a regular basis. We’ve never taken that approach and ours enjoy going to the ‘beauty parlor’ for the pretty cut ad bath, so I don’t know a lot about it. Nancy believes the dogs prefer that method and that it makes their skin less bumpy, so it appeared to me that they fully intended to keep the dog properly groomed and that her allergies would not be an issue.
Please feel free to ask any other questions, and I’d be more than happy to be a part of future home visits for ARG! You folks are amazing!
Ziggy says hello.
