Thanks for responding. You know, I think the funniest thing Reggie our first dale did was pull an orange from FL out of the bag, suck the juice and wore it on his snout. I swear they are absolute comedians. He also had a woobie (blankie) and when friends would come for a visit, it would coddle and suck on it and what appeared to be a bit obscene. That was always embarrassing but what can ya do. Kinda like kids and family, can’t always pick them or get them to behave as they should, so ya roll with the punches and laugh. He kept me in stitches, even knocked me unconscious one day for quite a while until my ex discovered me. Tripped me and I hit my head on the base of the sofa. That’s when obedience classes began. Anyway, love dale stories.
I’m semi retired but in school now, so give me a couple weeks as I have contractors in my home and my house is in quite a disarray and trying to get into study mode again. I am a little concerned about my back patio being big enough but we have that whole field out back that’s open, and always will be as it’s a flood plane and the park down about 3 blocks is always an option too. How about we talk in two weeks on a Monday. I try to keep Mondays as a take care of business day as my deadlines tend to be on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday’s. Look forward to chatting more.
Michele

Hello Michele,
Thank you for looking into adopting a rescued Airedale. We are always especially happy to hear from Airedale-experienced families.
Your descriptions of your previous ones are so eloquent, and the love and dedication shines through. You probably know an Airedale living to age 22 is quite unusual.
Coincidentally, parts of your environment are similar to mine. We have two male aire-heads, a average sized back yard, and a huge field beyond that. Usually hay is planted; once it is harvested, rolled up and carried away, we love to go out on the 25-ish foot lead and romp. This year they have followed with a planting of corn, so we’ll have to wait a little longer for access to our “dog park.”
I look forward to working with you. It is true we don’t have a lot of ‘dales on hand right now, but that can, and will, change at any time.
Please let me know a good time to call you. I am retired and can be available most any time at your convenience.

Hi Barbara,
I recently received the ARC adoption contract for my signature but have a question. I should explain my background with Pumpkin first.
Pumpkin is a 9-1/2 yr. old Airedale whom I fostered for 2 weeks beginning July 13 after which time I agreed to adopt her. Christina Prange had taken her for a vet check-up right before and I was told that other than a UTI, which she was on antibiotics for, that Pumpkin was healthy. On week 3, I obtained her most recent vet records. Soon after one morning I noticed that her urine seemed dark and took her to another vet who found lots of red and white blood cells in her urine. He prescribed a different antibiotic for a 10 day regimen to rule out a resistant UTI after which time (yesterday) I took Pumpkin in for a 2nd urinalysis. The results still showed an elevated level of blood cells in her urine indicating that something other than a UTI is going on. Pumpkin’s vet next wants to look for bladder stones. An x-ray may or may not reveal the stones. An ultrasound is more indicative but also more costly. If stones do show up, Pumpkin’s vet is talking surgery and anesthesia to remove the stone(s). Or more diagnostic tests may be indicated to rule out cancer although he feels it is unlikely. If stones are present the cost for x-ray, anesthesia, and surgery would be $800-$900.
The ARC contract states that I am “to provide immediate treatment for injury or illness of a serious nature”. My question is what does ARC expect of the adoptive caregivers in regards to “immediate treatment”? Pumpkin does seem to have an illness of a serious nature but we are not prepared to provide the type of treatment her vet is suggesting. My philosophy is to provide Pumpkin with the best natural care I can until her quality of life deteriorates to the extent that euthanasia becomes the humane choice. As of now Pumpkin still seems to have a fair to good quality of life. If ARC wants to follow the vet’s recommendations then I’m sorry but I cannot adopt her however I will continue to serve as a foster caregiver for as long as needed (including taking her for treatment) if ARC wants to proceed with extensive veterinary intervention. She’s a good dog and I want to do what is best for her.
I’ll wait to hear from you before talking to her vet any further.
Thanks very much,
Carol

I don’t know if you all remember Bo/Beau. He came to us XX years ago – many years ago from a man whose son owned him (?) and was left outside. Kat picked him up to foster and never let him go. In June, she notified me that her groomer took him from her due to some hardships but in a VM, that did not turn out -not sure what happened. I see that she has made the very hard decision to let him go and reading the circumstances, I see what she must do to care for her dad. Beau does not like FL and it does not sound safe for him. I thought of the Van Dykes as a good option but is there anyone else – on the way down to FL? She drives there in a few days. I want the best home for Beau -that’s all!

Subject: Grady
Hi Nancy
I realize you were just recently home visited by Gale and Dan and this is really
soon to ask. We have a new boy in ARG care as of yesterday. His name is Grady,
he is estimated to be age 4, not yet neutered. He is HW positive. He is sweet
and attention seeking. He is 47 lb but could gain a few lbs. he is fostering
with a long time volunteer in Mooresville but he is love obsessed with her older
poor hips female and her own dog is growls to Grady.
We will treat him for HW in two weeks. Actually Gale will treat him. He needs
to remain on doxycycline for 2 more weeks before he is treated…..plus Gale is
not ready yet to treat 🙂
Would you be willing to foster him for the next two weeks. Since you all are
leash walkers, that is perfect since he should not be running around with HW.
Also if you all fell in love, you could adopt Grady. Please let me know your
thoughts.

8/7 Gale called.
She and Dan and Ruby, their two yr old wild child all approved.
She talked about the no fence, and believed that they know not to let an airedale off leash for quite some time, if ever.
She asked what kind of airedale they were looking for, and she said an airedale or maybe a welsh.
Dan spoke mostly to Mr Morin. Their time in South Africa was due to his employment by the State dept as a communication specialist. They have done other overseas assignments over the years, but are now mostly retired.
She liked them, and think they would be committed caring adopters.

hi
i spoke to larysa this afternoon re: teddy. He seems like a wonderful but high maintanance dog. She prepares human food for him every meal. She also mentioned he was an outside dog- he would come in due to the heat but I didn’t get clarification on if he stayed out overnight. Also he is a runner! But hse said he is really a sweet boy – she has had him since he was a puppy. Because of the divorce, she thinks they will sell their house and she will be in an apartment.
He doesn’t have any real experience with kids- she had mentioned her step son had visited since he was a baby but that the dog hadn’t lived with kids.
She is going to forward pictures to me – he is an oorang.
I think I would prefer a dog that has history with kids. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with him going into a new home and not having any experience. As we know the change itself can be difficult and I wouldn’t want to make it harder.
Please keep us in mind for any other available dogs!
Thanks again for your hard work.
Amanda
