            Hello Erin, Gary and Heather,
THANK YOU for helping on Saturday 3/27/2025 to get Katharina to her foster/training. As always, thanks for your patience as we worked out drivers, meeting locations, times, etc. You all make this happen. Saturdays are busy and your weekend, ARG is so thankful that you spend a few hours to help Airedales get to their new homes. Please review the phone numbers for your connecting drivers – if you’re running behind, just text/call and I can adjust this timeline as necessary.

This is a bittersweet day for Katharina and Erin. We are thinking of you Erin as you help Katharina to her new family!

Safety: Regular safety – please ensure that you are aware of Katharina when opening car doors, transferring her from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Unless necessary, remain in car until transport transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured by hand on the leash; when allowing potty breaks – ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a dog in unfamiliar settings. Do not let her off leash at any time. Double Leashing is preferred if you have a slip lead to bring along for your leg of the trip.

Do not feel the need to walk Katharina outside if you arrive early. Sitting in the car will be fine for her. (If you have a water bowl, please bring it so she can take a water sip between cars to keep her hydrated).

PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Katharina cannot accidentally open a window or door! (It has happened! Airedales are very smart!)
Katharina will travel with a few days supply of food; her leash and collar; favorite bone & toy and medical records (we have electronic too)

Subject: Airedale Home Visit – Cary

hi Tracy & Patrick, Eric & Lisa
I am an ARG Volunteer with Mary and I help coordinate the home visit for Airedale Rescue Group. Tracy and Patrick and Eric & Lisa live relatively close to each other in Cary. Eric and Lisa have an ARG ‘dale named Toby. They will conduct the home visit, which is the final step in our application process. Please work a time that works for everyone when a home visit can occur. Luckily our days are longer with it getting dark later! Sometimes a weekend is the only thing that works…..just connect with each other and determine when it can happen. Thank you!

needs more structure and boundaries for a young dog.
She has exercised some bad habits and will need a “reset” .
She may ultimately be fine with other dogs but would need to be with someone that understands the need for management and structure in the home.
would probably benefit from some training to address impulse control
Some basic obedience that has progressed to working on duration is always a good thing . But this dog could use some behavioral training and owners need to learn how to manage triggers in the home . First issue was the owner had to hold the dog back because she would bolt to and or out the door. This restraint creates a very frustrated and intense mind set . Layer that with a small dog doing an excited “death scream” and you have the formula for disaster.
This is a shame because they seemed to have been very happy with Poppy .
Really hope the other family you mentioned will want her . But they may need a little coaching to assure Poppy does not get in trouble again .

OMG – we have all fallen head over heels for this sweet girl. She is SO stinkin’ cute. Daisy (formerly Gabby) is settling in very well. She is playful and smart and seems to be enjoying the hustle and bustle of our family. Her bark is ferocious when she hears the door but she quickly turns into a wriggling happy to see you fluff ball no matter if you were gone 3 minutes or 3 hours. Both our Charlies were seniors (7+) & Charlie the 1st was so sick when they came to us – so it has been a long while since we have had a young spunky ADT who likes to play with toys and we are delighted with her zoomies and tuck butt runs!! She is great on her leash and not reactive to neighbor dogs. We are slowly changing her food over to our preferred brand & she has not suffered any ill effects. We just love her!

Thank you for sending her medical records – she did come with the Advantage and per notes had been treated for March – next dose due April 12. I am taking her to our vet on Friday to get her established as a patient, get their 2 cents on the heartworm/spaying situation & to get her microchipped (no indication that she has been prior but will obviously scan first). I will let you know what they say.

Thank you so much for all you do for these wonderful dogs!!!

hi VC – I wanted to update you about Poppy. She attacked her Airedale sibling (previously had attacked her Wire Fox Terrier sister) and she had to be moved to a foster home immediately. She is doing fine in that home but her foster dad is not able to keep her much longer due to juggling her with his own Airedale while his wife is out of town. I tried to get a foster home in NC but it did not work out. We need to place Poppy immediately this week and it is not in her best interest to be in a kennel. Thank you for your offer to do that for her. Therefore I need to say that due to timing, Poppy is not going to work out for you and Jan.

However, we received a new Airedale who will be available for adoption and it is not as rushed of a timeline. Here are his details – Archie. Would you all be interested in Archie. You have first rights of refusal. He will be neutered.

                          Archie

If you need to, put her in a kennel and I will pay the expense for it.

hi VC – I wanted to check in with you about Poppy. I have not had a chance to talk to her former owner, the lady who surrendered her yet to check in on some of your questions. However, I wanted to ask on timing of when you’d be ready for Poppy. We have her in a very temp foster home currently in Nashville area. However, he is ‘single dad’ for a bit while his wife is away so he is not able to manage 2 ‘dales for long. We need to get her into her new home – are you ready by weekend for this? I know you have a surgery coming up – how will that timing go with taking on Poppy. Just checking – we reached out to other foster homes too but wanted to check on your timing. Thanks.

He lives on a very quiet peninsula on Lake Norman here in Charlotte. His house is on at the end of cul de sac and super dog safe. His home is very large and and well kept. They have a very large yard with a sturdy metal fence. I would have no reservations’ recommending him.

                                  Spay –
3 1/2 weeks from when they picked up Poppy – she went in for spay and vet called and said she has a spay scar. No spay necessary
3 weeks ago – Poppy went into heat.
Took a bit to figure it out – orange spots on floor but also same as when these lady bugs died on their floor. Then noticed Poppy licking herself and realized she was in heat.

Stacey’s Family – Ruby WFT, another Airedale who is 6, Izzy
Poppy and Izzy get along really well. Poppy loves Izzy.

Poppy does not have any negative feelings about Ruby. Ruby WFT growls and is moody and grumbly and older. She growls when she plays. Poppy has been very corrective when Ruby makes that growl. Been quite a few squirmiest. Never lunged or grabbed Ruby.

There has been one or two times that she was afraid Poppy would start a fight with Izzy but generally over a bone or treats or something high value.
She has worked with Poppy a lot and having food at same time as Izzy. Keep in different rooms when they have a bone.

                                  Incident:
Niece arrived and the dogs love the nieces. The nieces came into the driveway gate and Stacey was holding Poppy at collar. Ruby squealed and Poppy went after her. Threw her around like a dog toy. (I think this is instinct and the sound that Ruby made was a wild animal.). Stacey threw herself on top of Ruby. Probably when Poppy came out of Stacy’s hand hold – she broke her finger. Stacy also has a black eye from when she threw her body on top of Ruby.

                                  About Poppy:
Poppy loves to run loose in their 6 acres fenced yard. Poppy has keen mole removal skills. She has done an amazing job of removing moles from her field.
Poppy is a snuggler. She sleeps in bed at night with them. She is a lap dog and sits on lap while watching TV. Overall she has completely stolen their hearts.

                                  Obedience
She sits for her food. Poppy has to make eye contact with Stacy, then she says ‘good’ and she can eat. She is a smart learner
Sit. Lay down. Touch -she holds out her thumb and says touch and she coming running over to touch her nose to thumb.

Needs work on ‘come’ command. When she wants to do something else, ‘come’ is out the door.

Because of the way their house is set up with 6 acres fenced, Poppy runs out front and back door b/c their fence/gate is at driveway. This would need to be a learning curve for Poppy because she loves an open door/gate to run off. If she got away, she would not come when called

Knows WAIT and STAY – it registers to her but she would not trust her to not dart out the door. Needs more work.

Does not walk on leash based on their 6 acres fenced. She runs their fields.

Poppy has a tracking gps collar and Stacy will send that with Poppy. New owner would need to activate/subscription but she’ll send the gps collar.

Stacey thinks that Poppy needs a large yard. She runs around all day long. At night – have to force her to come in. She loves outside.
No jumping over fence – jumps on it to see a small dog across street. They walk it and Poppy and Izzy put paws on fence to bark and see the small dog as they go by. But she does not attempt over. But she would go for an open gate.

She is hand strip her and Stacey says that she is gorgeous. (Stacy used to be a groomer)

Should not be around smaller dogs.
