    Phone Interview: Eddie Miller
    March 18, 2023

Eddie has had 3 Airedales over the past 30 years…2 males and 1 female. He just lost “Zena” recently. All 3 Eddie got as puppies.
Eddie lives alone, is retired, he has no family living in the area. In speaking with one of his personal references, she stated that Eddie had never married and his dogs are his life. Front yard is fenced with chain link fencing with a gate from the porch to the yard as well.
Eddie said that the longest a dog would be alone would be a couple of hours as he plays tennis a couple times a week. He said he hasn’t taken a vacation in a long time, but when he did go on vacation he boarded Zena at his Vet. He said he usually takes his dogs on errands (grocery store etc.) with him if he can.
Another reference said that before they both lost their dogs, they were known around town as the 4 Musketeers…”we walked them everywhere.”
Eddie and I discussed some of the ‘dales currently available. He is interested in Roxie or Boone. I think that Blue would possible be too much as he is leash reactive and Eddie walks the dog in town.
Eddie is as good as his application sounds. His references are great too! I will contact Vet tomorrow, but will proceed with HV arrangements anyway.
    Ref. #1
Has known Eddie for 18 years. Was familiar with his Airedales. Said Zena was a great dog. You couldn’t ask for a better dog owner. He did everything he needed to for them…cooked, Vet…he was unbelievable. Ref. lives in same town and often walked her dog with Eddie and his dog.
    Ref. #2
Has known Eddie for 23 years. Describes him as “nuts” about his dogs. He would do anything for a dog. They are his children. He loves them to death. His dogs are his life. No reservations in recommending him for adoption.
    Ref. #3
Has known Eddie for 15 years. His dogs are his babies. He would be great…you would have no worries.

Vet info. still pending, as it’s Sunday, so will call tomorrow.
Anne Daletski has agreed to do HV so will forward information to her and let Eddie know she’ll be contacting him.

Communicated with Wendy. They are getting one of Merles’s pups. I have no idea what this means as I didn’t ask her as she said she ad spouse are both very sick. I told them to get well and good luck with their new pup, from whomever and wherever!!!

    3/4/2023
Shannon texted me stating that “we have decided to look at other options and are bringing home a pup next week.”
I thanked her for getting back to me and wished them well.

    Phone Interview: Shannon McKinney
    February 27, 2023

Shannon describes her neighborhood as being in downtown Raleigh, NC. The neighborhood has many families with a lot of children. She walks her twin 7 y/o daughters to school. There is a park on the other side of their backyard. It is an eclectic neighborhood and very walkable, with some sidewalks and a mini-mart and such close by.
She and her husband Andrew along with their twin daughters live in a ranch style home of about 1200 sq. ft. Their yard is fenced with chain link fencing. Both neighbors are fenced as well…one neighbor having a German Shepard and the opposite neighbor having an older Lab and “some type of mutt.” They have a door that opens from the home directly into the backyard. (this is clarified because on their application they replied NO that they didn’t have a door that opens directly to the dog area.)
They currently have an 11 y/o Doodle that has been diagnosed with cancer. As it so happens, he “Leonard” is being euthanized today. ☹ They have had Leonard since he was a puppy. Leonard is neutered. Leonard has the run of the house while they go out. He was not crate trained and she states that he’s never been a problem. Shannon related that Leonard gets along well with other dogs and is good with the chickens and bunnies.
They have free range chickens that are in their coop during the night, but out during the day. They also have 2 bunnies that are in a hutch on the back porch. The bunnies are occasionally brought inside when the twins want to play with them.
They have family close by and family is usually their “go to” for taking care of the animals if they go on vacation etc. as Shannon relates that sometimes it’s difficult to find care for the chickens and bunnies, so they often rely on family when needed. They have also used a boarding facility, but again, usually depend on family.
They are currently not looking at any other breeds. They have never rescued. Their interaction with Airedales is that they have friends that have an Airedale. Shannon states that her sister has rescued. They are not willing to take on a special needs Airedale, but realizes that as a dog ages/matures health issues arise (this was another area of clarification on their application).
We talked at length regarding the rescue process. I told her I could not give her a time frame. That rescues come to us often with issues, some minor, some major. I discussed the importance of consistency, patience, time, love and training when dealing with an Airedale. That they are very smart, stubborn and they need a job and enjoy interaction. I stressed the importance of letting the Airedale know that you are in control…you are the boss.

Personal reference #1 has known the family for about 11 years and lives nearby. She describes the family as animal lovers and are devasted at having to put Leonard down. Reference has a dachshund and Leonard is good with him, being respectful of the size disparity. Reference states that the McKinney’s do what they need for their animals, realizing that as Leonard started growing he was exuberant and had a lot of energy, so they had no problem with fencing their backyard. Reference states that Shannon is a marathoner so she would run with Leonard. Reference has no reservations regarding approval for adoption.

Personal reference #2 has known Andrew for about 16 years and Shannon for about ½ of that. Reference lives nearby, is familiar with children whom she describes as being “really into animals”. Reference herself has a Dachshund and related that Leonard was very good with her dog. She does feel that the chickens and bunnies could be an issue, to which I agreed. She had no reservations regarding approving them for adoption.

VET: Banfield Animal Hospital tech wouldn’t talk to me…need permission from the client. I informed her that the client had obviously given me their contact so permission should be inferred. Nope. She said she’d call them, then call me back. Uh-huh. I was able to get out of her that Leonard hadn’t been seen by them since March of 2022. Maybe they took him somewhere else for euthanasia. No heard worm test since September of 2021. He was up to date on rabies, distemper etc. I texted Shannon and asked her to give me a call.

    Hi Christine,
Charlie the Second is doing well – he turned 10 yo on 12/27/22.
I would be happy to do a home visit. It would need to be on the weekend or in the evening (7PMish). I am also in grad school and classes start up again on 1/17 so if I could do it before that, that would be great.
Please send me the details and a link for the home visit forms and I can contact the family.

    Happy New Year!

    Hi Kelly,
Keith and I visited with Bob and Karen Nichols today. They had a lovely house set back on a neighborhood street but on a cul de sac. They had a large back yard as well. Their home was lovely and immaculate. The garage was neat and very organized. We were greeted by both Bob and Karen and their rescue, from a family member, Latte, a Dachsund mix. Latte immediately raced to his box of toys and brought us a toy but did not share it with us. 🙂 He was a very sweet dog and loved getting belly rubs from his humans. He was very comfortable around them and they definitely loved him. We talked about the Airedales we have lost but still love. They have also had a Welsh Terrier that crossed the Rainbow Bridge a year and a half ago. They rescued a fox terrier as well. They have experience with terriers and definitely Airedales. They have been married 37 years and have 3 children. This all resonated with us because we have been married 42 years and have 2 children. They have dog crates and if the dog they foster is crate trained, they would use a crate. Bob works from home so there is little time that they would actually be away from the dogs. They have two cats that are barn cats and rarely ever come to the house and another cat that is wary of unknown people or animals. He does like Latte. We toured their home and every room had a dog bed or cat castle in it. We asked why they wanted to do this and they said that for years they had adopted amazing Airedales thanks to Rescue Organizations and they wanted to give back and help. They walk their dogs on leashes and take many walks with them. We feel they would be a wonderful home for a foster and would recommend them.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions. I hope I covered it all. We also told them that if they foster, we want to come and visit the Airedale.

    Always,
    Keith and Sue Havens
(attached is a view of their house from the front drive, back of house and of them with Latte.)

Airedale Rescue Group would like to thank you for your interest in and love of Airedales.
After reviewing your application and your preferences, we have come to the unfortunate conclusion that an Airedale that would not be a good fit for you.
As you are most likely aware, Airedales and most dogs for that matter, come into rescue because of troublesome issues. These issues are exacerbated through the surrender and re-homing/adoption process. We see a regression in training/learning, an escalation in aggression issues if present and acting out just to name a few. We rarely have a perfect Airedale…something we’d all like!!
Stability and consistency are just a couple of ingredients in a successful rescue recipe. Our goal at ARG is to find the best, most nurturing and permanent home for our Airedales.
We wish you well in your search for an addition to your family. We are just unable to help at this time.
    Sincerely,
    Kelly Imbody, ARG

This applicant has no business getting a dog. Her story contradicts itself. I couldn’t keep up. She is moving in with elderly, ill parents to care for them, quit her job supposedly, but in the next breath tells me she works just down the street. I had to constantly redirect the conversation. She is/has also looked at labs, pits, and Shar Peis. She recently supposedly rescued a pit, but didn’t bother to vet the dog because “it was old.” She is not an appropriate applicant.

    Good morning everyone!

Bob & Karen, I’d like to introduce you to Susan. She and her husband Keith will be doing your home visit. She’ll be in touch with you to schedule. We ask that both you and Karen be home when the visit takes place. Susan and Keith may opt to bring their Airedale with them.
I you’ve any questions or concerns, please reach out to me.k
I’ll be anxious to hear how things go!!

    Susan (and Keith!),
Thank you for being willing to do this. As you know, ARG depends on our network of volunteers and Airedale lovers in general to place our surrendered ‘dales.

Please find attached the folks you’ll be visiting application, my phone interview notes and the home visit evaluation form.

Please use the HV eval as a guide, as some items may/may not apply. The $64,000 question you want to be able to answer with an emphatic yes is…would you feel comfortable leaving your Airedale with these folks?
Sometimes the answer is “yes, but…”; sometimes it’s a “no”. We want to be able to place our ‘dales in the perfect home. We don’t want to go back in and “re-place” them. They’ve already been through so much.

I will introduce you to these folks via a shared email. It then will be up to you to reach out to them and schedule a time for the HV. Once you’ve completed the HV you can jot your findings/thoughts down(preferably in Word…it works better on our internal site/page) and email them to me or if it’s easier you can call me and we can chat about your visit.

If you’ve any questions/concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Again, we thank you in advance for your help!!!
I anxiously await hearing how it goes!!!

    Warmest regards,

    Hi Kelly,
I would be glad to do a home visit. Please let me know what I am to look for and what questions you want me to ask
I will also bring my husband, Keith. We have been involved with ATRA since the 1990’s and are now volunteering at the local shelter, MoCo Mutts two days a week. Grimsley is in the neighboring county about 12 mikes away.

    Airedale Rescue Group
Phone Interview: Bob & Karen Nichols
    1/9/2023

Bob and Karen Nichols live in Grimsley, TN which is about ½ way between Knoxville and Nashville. Bob describes their neighborhood as a rural sub-division, with each home having at least 3+ acres of property. He describes it as very quiet. They have been in Grimsley since 2019 having lived in TX, SC, NC and FL in the past.
They currently have an elderly Chihuahua mix (12 yrs. old) and 3 cats…2 outside cats and 1 inside cats. They are ADT experienced having had 3 Airedales in the past. Their 1st they got as a puppy from a breeder, the 2nd they rescued and the 3rd they “found” and described her as a matted mess. They eventually found a home for her in WY(!). They’ve also rescued a Welshie in the past.
They are not fenced and have always leash walked their dogs.
Bob works from home with no chance of returning to a brick and mortar office. He states that he could have retired, but it was too easy to keep working and the flexibility was too good to pass up. Karen is a school administrator and works just a few minutes from home. They have children in the area…2-5 hours away and their 3 children all have dogs. He states that they do see their kids with dogs in tow so a rescue would need to get along with other dogs as well as cats being that they have 3.
They have a good understanding of what’s involved in rescue and are interested not only in adopting if the right ‘dale comes along, but are very interested in fostering, transporting and helping with home visits. He said that they really didn’t enter into to this looking for a “permanent” dog…they just want to help as he knows that it is a volunteer organization and that there is usually just a handful of people doing a lot of work. (really???!!!!) Should the right ‘dale come along their preference would be a Senior ‘dale, no sex preference.
    VET:
Vet tech said that the Nichols are great folks. All of their animals are neutered, up to date on vaccinations. They have been clients for over 2 years. No red flags on client record.
    PERSONAL REFERENCE:
Personal reference has known the Nichols for about 6 years. She said that they help each other out with their animals when needed. “If I was a dog, I’d want to live with them.” Reference describes the Nichols as caring, thoughtful. Personal reference has 2 cats and 1 dog.
