Airedale Rescue Group
Melody Broquet phone interview
September 12, 2019Melody is new to the Airedale breed. She stated that she has “researched” the breed and thinks it would be a good fit for her. She previously had a pit-mix she got as a puppy that she put down almost a year ago after battling cancer. Melody’s adult son lives with her and he has a Jack Russell mix, female, spayed 10 years old. Of import is the fact that Melody babysits 2 of her youngest grandchildren, ages 3 and 7 months, 2 days per week. Other grandchildren are ages 5 and 7.
She has a chain link fence. She has not been exposed to Airedales through friends or anything. The Jack Russell gets along with other dogs. It is important to Melody that the adopted ‘dale be good/patient/tolerant of children. She relates that it has taken her this long after putting her pit-mix “Beauty” down to feel that she is ready for another dog. Melody stated that she had medical insurance on Beauty, but opted out of chemo and/or radiation.
She has always had females, she did however say that she would consider a male. She prefers to not have a puppy. The oldest she would consider would be 7 or 8 years old…stating that she wants them around for a few years.
The vet was not helpful. They could not locate her name in their system. I’m thinking that since she is currently not vetting and hasn’t for almost a year, that she has been purged from their system after she put her pit-mix down. I have reached out to her personal reference, but have not as yet heard back.
Melody was somewhat difficult for me to talk with. She didn’t offer up any additional information other than what was asked…no elaboration. Perhaps we just didn’t click. I’ll pursue her personal reference again to see what additional information I can glean and will post.September 9, 2019 at 10:09 am in reply to: Ruth & Jennifer Higgins, Marietta, GA ADT exp, 0 kids, small dog, 6 hr alone #23580Ruth Higgins

Good morning Ruth,I corresponded with Jackie, just to be sure I gave you the right information.
You should apply to ATRA and let them know that you have been approved through us…ARG. Also, give them (ATRA) my contact as well as Jackie’s contact. The ball is in their court at this point. If/when ATRA contacts either myself or Jackie, we’ll provide them with any documentation that they need. ATRA covers a huge geographical area (I used to volunteer with them) so they try to place ‘dales within their area as do all of the Airedale Rescue Groups. Transports within the area often logistical nightmares and add to that another area…they become very difficult, but doable. That being said however, all want the ‘dales to go to the best homes.
Contact ATRA and we’ll take it from there! Here’s our contact information. Feel free to let them know that I volunteered with both them (ATRA) and SOAR.
We’ll do whatever we can.
Sincerely,
Kelly Imbody, ARG

I just wanted to drop you a line to check on Ms. Jeanne coming for the home visit. I didn’t expect her call the week of your letter on August 28 as you mentioned she was out of town. But this new week has almost come to a close, and we have not yet heard from her.
Did we misunderstand? Perhaps she meant she would be out of town THIS week. Please just let us know. We just don’t want to fall between the cracks.Stormy

Jeanne was leaving for a show when I we corresponded on the 28th of August. Then what with the holiday weekend and all…If you don’t hear from her by the end of this coming week, get back with me. You’ve not fallen through the cracks and volunteer organizations often run a little slower sometimes than we’d like!
Keep me posted!
Kindest regards,

Cassidy Syverson phone interview
September 5, 2019Cassidy has 2 small children, ages 3 & 6. They also currently have a Welsh Terrier, Bailey age 6 and a 1/2. Approximately 6 months ago they adopted Duke from ATRVA. Cassidy relates that they had to surrender Duke back to ATRVA because he “snapped” at both she and one of the children. Duke is currently with Cathy Biersack of ATRVA. She also intimated that he was larger than expected…”he weighed about 80 lbs. He was a big boy.” She feels that perhaps they didn’t give him a fair chance after having spent all of his life in a 10×10 cage…that it was probably too soon for him to come into their active family.
Cassidy is currently a stay at home Mom. She related to me that she “warmed up to the idea of Bailey having a buddy.” Bailey is chipped and they would plan on chipping the ‘dale as well. She states that her children have been around dogs since birth. She related Bailey is good with other dogs, especially when in their home, but gets vocal if the visiting dog gets vocal. She does feel however that Bailey may have some leash aggression.
They are somewhat set on a male as “I’ve been told that two females don’t do well together. It’s hard to get them used to each other.” She expressed interest in Dash. I inquired as to whether she was aware of his sensitivity to loud noises. She was. She admits that their Welshie is somewhat sensitive as well stating “we don’t take her out on 4th of July.” They don’t necessarily give any one type of dog food having tried Beneful and Bil-Jac.I didn’t feel it necessary to contact their vet, as they had been approved by ATRVA in the recent past. I do however have some misgivings regarding Cassidy’s sincerity in wanting another dog and I’m just simply basing that on the fact that she had to “warm up” to the idea. Also, the young ages of her children is of some concern. I think it will have to be a ‘dale that has been socialized around children as no matter how long kids have been around dogs…kids will be kids. I don’t think that Dash is the dog for them in my humble opinion. It will have to be the perfect ‘dale…probably a long wait. It’s not fair to the ‘dale to have him/her be returned to rescue if it can be avoided.

Jennifer Beaumont phone interview
September 3, 2019Cell phone: 207-653-5009
Home phone: 207-839-0406Jennifer is a stay at home Mom and relates that she has an active family…a Senior in HS and a 5th grader. She retired from the military in 2004, spouse continues to work for the State Police. They currently have 2 dogs, a rescue Airedale named Hogan whom they adopted in 2012 and a Pit whom is also a rescue. She related that they have had practice when it comes to dealing with dogs that don’t like loud noises as Daisy, the Pit has this issue. She also states that neither of the dogs like fireworks. Jennifer said that Maine’s weather has maybe just 4 short storms a summer, unlike us here in the Carolinas.
They have 3 acres that has an electric fence. There are 2 other homes on this private road, each with 3 acres. Hogan the Airedale had a stroke approx. a year ago and is doing well with little to no residual effects other than a bit of a change in his gait/walk. Jennifer relates that it is thought his stroke was possibly caused by pesticides…flea/tick meds. Hogan does continue to take medication as a result of the stroke, and is followed very closely by their vet. (see notes in Forums)
They are interested in Dash, but relate that they aren’t/weren’t really looking. “He just spoke to us”. They are not set on a male. I explained/reviewed the process with Jennifer and told her to keep an eye on the fb page as well as our website. I also told her that Cathy Biersack would be in touch with her regarding a home visit.September 3, 2019 at 10:07 am in reply to: OUT OF AREA Jennifer & Richard Beaumont, Gorham, ME 04038 #23554Hi Kelly,
Thank you. I will call our vet Tuesday am. Please note that they will most likely tell you Hogan-our 8 year old Airedale, is not up to date with shots. He had a stroke May 2018 and his specialists only wants him to receive his rabies. Edgewood is his primary vet however, he sees a neurologist at Maine Veterinary Medical Center. You can reach them at 207-885-1290. We were actually there yesterday with him as he was having severe diarrhea for 3 days. He has a stomach bug. Platelets are still good.
We adopted Hogan 7 years ago from the Airedale Rescue. We weren’t looking for another dog, Melinda and Cathy shared Dash and our hearts melted.
We also have Daisy, our blue pitta we rescued from NYC 5 years ago. She’s approx 8-9 years old.
Best,
Jennifer

Subject: BanjoWe have spotted Banjo on your website. I realize we are not yet approved as we still need to have the home visit and final approval.
Banjo is adorable, AND he is good with chickens!
Do you know if the foster mom has any updates since the April update posted on your website, on how Banjo is doing on counter-surfing, jumping on his humans and on walking with a leash? Is he potty trained?

That sounds great! If you do talk to the foster mom, also ask about the licking he was doing and if those areas have healed and if he still has the issue of licking (Lick Granuloma?). I read about the dental issues and teeth extractions. Does he have enough teeth left to chew?Have fun shooting today. Pat will be shooting as well. He is going to Montana in November and has hand loaded and will be testing his loads today.
Thank you,

Well, Banjo has had it pretty rough of late. I spoke with our main volunteer who has knowledge of Banjo and this is what she told me:He recently had 11 teeth removed (he’s 6 yrs. old) because they were “bad and worn down.” His remaining teeth were scheduled to be removed today, but the canine dentist had to cancel due to a family emergency. Why/how did his teeth get like this???!!!!!!!!!!!!!????
He’s had no vet care since his puppy shots. NONE! He was fed Ol’ Roy dog food. Lived outside & had fleas but remarkably is heart worm negative. He was neutered before coming to foster care. He chases cars…he was relinquished because the neighbor threatened to shoot him for same and getting their dogs “riled up.” Regarding your other questions, the foster Mom was described as “very sweet” but does little in the way of training. I was told that every time we have a potential placement for him that the fosters say that “their home is better.” In all likelihood Banjo will be staying with his foster folks indefinitely i.e. they’ll probably end up adopting him.
Just be patient, we’ll get you a ‘dale & it will be the right ‘dale.
Sorry I can’t have better news.

Stormy & Pat Shealy phone interview
8/26/19
I spoke with both Stormy and Pat today regarding their desire to adopt. It should be noted that in previous correspondence to me that they indicated they did not want to foster…just have decided to adopt.
They have a total of 8 acres, 2 ½ of those have an electric fence. Both work 2 days/week with Stormy’s days varying as she is an RN and Pat works every Friday and Saturday.
They have free range chickens but when discussing the possibility of a “chase” being too tempting, they explained that they do have a predator safe chicken run that they will use while training the ‘dale. There are no children in the home but they do have 2 grandchildren an hour away ages 6 & 8. The other 3 grandchildren live out of state. Pat walks daily and plans for the ‘dale to walk with him. He also has a target range on the property and relates that he has trained dogs to not fear the gun shot. Stormy’s folks live approximately 3 miles away and are available for dog sitting should the need arise.
They related that they did give a dog (German Shepard) back to the adoption group as after having had her for more than a year, having a professional trainer work with her, and investing a lot of time and patience with her after biting 2 different neighbor’s dogs. That being said, they are emphatic that the ‘dale that would come to them be “of good temperament”. They want to know that the dog was fostered vs. kenneled while in rescue. I explained to them that right now, fosters are at a premium and a ‘dale may need to be held at a vet clinic etc. because of this. I also informed/reminded them that ARG can only be as forthcoming with information about the ‘dale as the individual doing the surrender.
They have no gender preference. They don’t really want a Senior dog but neither do they want a puppy as they don’t want to go through housebreaking again. Ideal age would be less than 7. They both agreed that good, calm (does that exist in an Airedale!!!?????) temperament is more important than age, so if it is the right dog, age is in large part a non-issue. They would also like for the ‘dale to be good with other dogs as they don’t want a repeat of the situation discussed above.
I spoke with the vet clinic. They kept their German Shepard Diesel up to date on vaccines etc. They did bring Shadow (the rescue) to them for bordetella. Also spoke with their personal reference and she had nothing but good to say about these folks. “They’ll love the dog to death.” She related that they really love their animals.August 17, 2019 at 4:54 pm in reply to: Ruth & Jennifer Higgins, Marietta, GA ADT exp, 0 kids, small dog, 6 hr alone #23444AIREDALE RESCUE GROUP
Ruth G. Higgins phone interview 8-17-19”
Ruth lives with her daughter Jennifer in a townhouse along with her daughter’s 14 y/o mixed breed Golden. “She’s smaller than a regular Golden.” Ruth explained that she filled out this application while at work, so isn’t sure regarding the dimensions of the outdoor fenced area, but related that it “seems pretty big.” This area has a concrete slab and grass. She purchased a puppy from a breeder in Texas in 2007 and the ‘dale died from a seizure at the age of 8. She has been without a dog, with the exception of her daughter’s since that time.
Ruth works part time at the DMV. She works 29 hours per week. She states that she doesn’t put in more than a 6 hour day and works 4 hours every Saturday, but relates that her daughter is usually off on Saturdays. (daughter is RN). She related that she initially emailed Texas rescue and was referred to ARG stating that she thought Texas was closest to her. I explained that we are regional as are most of the Airedale Rescue orgs.
As she is without a dog currently, no vet is listed though she does plan on vetting with her daughter’s vet. She relates that she is very pleased with them when she has had to take
“the Grand-dog” in. She is thinking a male would be better as she has a female in the house now & doesn’t want them to have to figure out who will be boss. I explained that regardless of sex, they’ll establish who is going to be in charge! She would like a dog not any older than a year. I explained to her that she may have to wait longer as most that we get in are middle aged. She did express interest in Odie and Oscar…preferring Odie more.
I spoke with her reference, Gloria Clarke. No red flags. They have known each other for 12-14 years. Gloria described Ruth as loving and kind to her ‘dale Makai, spoiling him within reason. She related that she felt she would be a good dog Mom. She has an appreciation for all breeds…Gloria states that I’ve learned some things from her. Is meticulous and orderly. Gloria feels that the home would be great for an Airedale.Sherry beebe
