Good morning Kristina,
My name is Kelly Imbody and I’m a volunteer with Airedale Rescue Group. Knowing that you must love Airedales as much as we in ARG do, I’m emailing you to ask a favor of you. We have a family in Auburn, GA that is wanting to adopt an Airedale from us. We need a home visit completed in order to finalize approval. I’m hoping you’d be willing to help us with this. ARG has a lot of folks waiting for home visits…everything has been put on hold due to Covid-19. We’re thinking that now that things are opening up a bit that we should attempt to resume our normal operations. I realize that Auburn, GA is about a 45 minute drive, but you’re my “Plan A” and I don’t have a “Plan B.” We rely on our network of volunteers and folks that have adopted from ARG in the past. Please let me know if this is something you think you’d do for us. It would of course be scheduled by you, at your convenience. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to text, call or email me. I anxiously await your reply.
Most sincerely,
Kelly Imbody, ARG

Of course your safety and comfort are paramount and we certainly appreciate the need to remain safe. The home visit is located in Peachtree Corners. You are my “Plan A”! Please don’t hesitate to call, text or email me with any questions/concerns. Let me know if this is something you’d be willing to help us with. I anxiously await your reply.

Hi Al!
Just checking in now that things are approaching “normal”. I’m ready to start working on your home visit. Are you still interested in adopting an Airedale through ARG or have your circumstances changed? Let me know. Thanks Al!

I hope you have remained healthy throughout this crazy pandemic. I emailed Virgilynne Prewett (she agreed to do your home visit) a couple of days ago as on May 9 I rec’d. an email from her asking when she could do the visit. My response to her was whenever you both felt comfortable. I’ve not heard back from her…maybe try getting in touch with her? Jackie let me know that you may be interested in Remy. If you don’t have any luck getting your home visit scheduled with Virgilynne, let me know and I’ll work on trying to find someone else in your area. Thanks Wendy for your patience during this trying time. I’ll wait to hear from you.

I hope this finds you well and like all of us REALLY tired of this pandemic! We’d like to get started on home visits if possible. I know when we last “talked” (emailed) you asked if you could go ahead and do the home visit. I left it up to you and Wendy stating that you could do them whenever you both felt comfortable. I’m just following up, wondering if you’ve met with her or not. Please let me know where you’re at on this. Thanks Virgilynne!!

Phone Interview: Jenny Grout
5/19/2020Jenny’s only experience with Airedales is when, as a child her friend had one that they played with. Jenny wants a dog with “the capacity to be smart, and that requires motivation.” Jenny has 3 young children ages 10, 8 and 6. She wants a dog that will do well with children. They lost their dog “Velvet” about 2 1/2 years ago. They adopted 2 cats about 2 years ago…the cats came after Velvet was gone. They do not have a fence. Jenny stated that they took Velvet outside always under supervision and with training she stayed in her yard. They moved to 3 different homes while they had Velvet. Velvet adopted them vs the other way around with Jenny stating that she just showed up one day in 2004. She was very timid, had a collar on, and tried to find owners (this was before the days of chips). The vet thought she was about 1 ½ to 2 years old. Velvet was a mixed breed.
The children are excited to get another dog. The 2 cats have been exposed to dogs as her friend brings her dog over to the house… the cats just “disappear.” The cats have all of their claws. Jenny has never used a crate, but is open to the idea realizing that some dogs need/prefer a crate. Her plans are to allow the dog to have the run of the house and sleep upstairs in all likelihood next to one of the kid’s bed.
We discussed the cost of a dog seeing that her application gave an estimate of $200-300. I explained that that amount would probably cover the annual visit, but to plan on 1-2 more visits/year for misc. complaints such as ear trouble etc. I reminded her of the need for heartworm and flea/tick preventatives as well as the cost for food, grooming etc. She understood.
We discussed the fact that rescues often come with some “emotional baggage” that needs to be worked through. I emphasized the importance of consistency bearing in mind that she has 3 children that will be in the mix. Also discussed the need for a lot of patience, love and time when adopting.
Jenny’s personal reference is aware of the fact that the family wants to adopt. They have known each other for 8 years and describes the family as “church going, supportive of community and a x home. She related that the kids were good with Velvet. This reference is the friend that brings her dog to the house and she reported no difficulties with the cats. She can offer no reason to not adopt to the family.
The vet tech I spoke with was not familiar with Velvet, but does state that the cats are up to date.
The family has no preference regarding sex. I explained that ARG rarely gets puppies. The rescue process was explained and I encouraged Jenny to keep an eye on our website and face book page.May 19, 2020 at 11:42 am in reply to: Natalie Rammer +roommate, Nashville, TN, Not ADT exp., 0 kids, 8 hr alone – did not adopt #24859Hi Jackie,
Thanks for reaching out and giving more insight into both groups. I have sent a note to the specific contact on the ATRA site (for Jarvis) and hope to hear back soon. I am happy to complete any home visits (virtual visit due to COVID-19?) when the time is appropriate.
I am very interested in adopting Jarvis and because of COVID19, I have been lucky to work from home majority of the week. If there were any questions about work balance, I want to ensure that I live only 15 minutes away and plan to take them out during my lunch break. Let me know if there are any questions. Thank you again!

wrote: Hi, Natalie. Thank you for your message. ARG and ATRA are two different groups, though we both are affiliates of National Airedale Rescue and we work collaboratively when it’s in the best interests of the Airedales we have. As you are aware, you are still in the process of being approved and cannot be finally approved until we’ve been able to conduct your home visit. ATRA works under the same protocol. If there are Airedales that you are interested in through ATRA, please contact the reps listed for those Airedales and tell them that you have applied through us. We will be happy to share with them our application and interview notes.
I’ve copied Kelly Imbody who interviewed you after you applied to ARG.
Thank you for contacting us again.

Hi Barbara,I wanted to reach out in regards to adopting an Airedale. I am not sure how many volunteer groups are specifically in Tennessee (with Airedales), but saw this to be a great contact.
A little about myself: I am 27 years old living in Nashville, TN. I have grown up with poodles my whole life and ready for a breed of my own! My mom is allergic to dogs which is why we have only rescued poodles, and why I am most interested in an Airedale. I am very active and plan to exercise with my pup!
Let me know if there is a different contact I should be reaching out to, to receive more information on adoption in Tennessee.
Thank you,

Phone Interview: Al Merrill
5/10/20Al and his family live in Greenwood, SC which he tells me is about ½ way between Columbia, SC and Greenville, SC. Al and his wife Jane have 2 daughters ages 11 and 13.
They have a ½ acre lot, the back of which is fenced with varying combinations of brick wall, chain link and metal picket. There are 2 gates to the back yard…one is a metal gate with the latch on the outside of the gate, the other is a wood gate and Al says the latch is difficult to manipulate. I asked about how the dog got out of the fence/got loose (see application). Al stated that his father-in-law was walking the dog and he thinks either the collar was too loose or he didn’t have the leash clipped to the collar correctly. The other incident was because he thinks a meter reader left the gate open.
Al is a hunter and on the application he states that he wants to take the dog hunting. He hunts deer during gun season and also hunts ducks. I asked him what his expectations of the dog were explaining that it’s unrealistic to expect the dog to be ok around guns. That this is something they need to be trained to and that it needs to start when they are puppies. Al related that he is aware of this and that though he told me he wanted to take the dog hunting “it’s not that important.” In answering why he was interested in an Airedale, Al replied that “they are loyal and protective.” He/they have no gender preference.
Asking if all in the family were on board with getting an Airedale Al stated that his oldest daughter “waffles” about getting a dog as she has mild dog/pet dander allergies. They recently put their “pound puppy” that was 17 years old down in February of 2020. He described her as a Terrier/Spaniel mix. They have never crate trained a dog before. The Terrier/Spaniel mix Al says chewed through a plastic crate due to separation anxiety.
Prior to Covid-19, Al said they had a nanny “all the time”. His mother-in-law lives about a mile down the road. Both Al and his wife work. Al leaves the house around 0700 and his wife leaves around 0830. The girls get home at 1530. Al’s wife is an attorney and works close, so if need be she could come home…providing she knew in advance and would therefore schedule herself accordingly. He has an Aunt and Uncle who live about 20 minutes away and he states that they took care of their dog if/when they had to go out of town.
In discussing care of the dog, Al relates that they treated regularly with flea/tick preventative, then switched to a collar, then stopped any treatment whatsoever.
I spoke with a vet assistant at Kinard Animal Hospital. He informed me that their dog Annie was up to date on all shots/vaccinations until she was put down. He could offer no reason why the Merrill’s should be excluded from adoption.
The Merrill’s personal reference has known Al since childhood. Their dog was well behaved and he could think of no reason why ARG shouldn’t adopt to them.I found myself wondering whether I believed him totally or not. He changed his tune regarding what he hoped for the dog i.e. hunting etc. Also the fact that a daughter has allergies is concerning. He stated that he thought that they would most likely get a companion for the ‘dale from the pound. I guess my gut feeling is that they would do better with a dog from the pound…specifically one that is used to hunting/guns.

She can hardly wSit for me and Beau to visit, she sounds really excited. Although, they haven’t completely redone their house, since Brooks has retired, they are working on the house and yard. I will visit whenever you think that I can now. I am looking forward to meeting Wendy and Brooks, and seeing if they are the right couple for an ARG Airedale.
