    Airedale Rescue Group
    Phone Interview: Shannon Newsom
    February 5, 2021

Shannon and her husband Frank live on Old Hickory Lake which is part of the Cumberland River. They have totally renovated/gutted their home, enjoy boating and nature. There are a lot of squirrel and deer in their area and Shannon voiced concern about this as they see a lot of wild life on their walks. They have had a total of 7 dogs…all coming from either rescues or shelters. Their last dog was a chocolate lab named Buddy. They’ve been without a dog for 5 years.
Both Shannon and Frank are semi-retired and work from home. She related that they don’t know any Airedale folks, but like the size, temperament of the Airedale. She also states that they are considering a WFT as well as “combing local shelters for dogs that need a home.”
They are not fenced. We discussed the prey drive and the need for continued training. Also discussed the fact that living on a lake/river that muddy paws are a given. They would like the ‘dale to be an extension of their family, taking him/her boating etc. They have family in the area for vacation care or could also board a local vet if need be. I discussed cost being much closer if not more than $1000.00/year considering vet visits, food, preventatives etc. They would consider chipping the ‘dale if not already done.
They have no preference regarding male or female, but would like the dog to be out of the puppy stage…housebroken and “knows it’s boundaries.” (?) They would consider a dog up to about 6 years old.

I spoke with their personal reference. She was aware that they were interested in getting a dog, but wasn’t aware they were interested in an Airedale. Personal reference lives down the road from these folks and have known each other for about 6 years. She feels that they would take exceptional care of a dog and that it would get a lot of exercise.

Also spoke with sister today. She relates that their Aunt lives near Samantha & has always had Airedales so there is a great support system there. She feels the dog would be very happy and active. Recommended approval.

Spoke with personal ref. #1 today. She has known applicant for about 10 years as they are neighbors. She has known the last 2 Doodles of applicant. Both were well trained and well taken care of. She describes applicant as a great person and great neighbor. Her only misgiving is that she doesn’t have a fence, but admits that its not a deal breaker. Reference states that applicant uses her fence when she likes as gate opens between the yards. She can think of no reason not to approve applicant.

Spoke with vet office. Well acquainted with past 2 Doodles. No issues. Dogs were well taken care of. No red flags on chart. Recommend approval.

    Good Morning Kelly,

We are still very interested in remaining on the list for an airedale when our time comes. Thank you for reaching out to us.

    Sarah & George Stevens

Hello Kelly, hope all is well in this new year. Diane and I definitely want to remain on the list for adopting an Airedale and although it maybe premature, we have been prepping our neighbors for a potential new addition to our family. We have been checking the web site weekly for spare ‘dales but as you have indicated none are available. Please keep us in mind for an older available Airedale.

    All the best
    Pat & Diane Willinger

Responded to my email inquiring whether or not she still wanted to remain on our “waiting for spare ‘dale” list:

Hi, no, I’m not. You can remove my application. I’ve adopted two retired greyhound racers. Thanks for reaching out.

    Phone Interview: Samantha Martin
    January 28, 2021

Samantha had originally placed her application with ARTVA, whom forwarded it on to ARG.
Samantha currently works from home and did even pre-Covid-19. She is the regional manager for Operation Home Front and is also a hairdresser by training. She most recently had her 3rd Labradoodle but sent the dog to be with and stay with her sister in FL because her sister has some emotional issues and Samantha felt that her sister needed the Labradoodle more than she at this point. The 1st 2 Labradoodles were rescues…the 1st was hit by a car after a gate being left open at a friend’s home whom was responsible for watching the dog while Samantha was out of town. This dog was 3 years old. The 2nd Labradoodle was around 8 years old when he developed seizures that quickly escalated in severity and she put him down. Samantha’s partner Michael lives 60 minutes away in Sanford, NC. He too works from home. Michael does not have a dog. He has about 2 acres, no fence and an in-ground pool. The pool steps run the entire width of the pool. Samantha lives on about a ¼ of an acre…no fence. Her home is 2 levels, with the Master suite downstairs. Her son is currently living with her, but she anticipates that he’ll be out of the house within the next 6 months. Michael’s home is one level. They both have friends that can/will watch a dog and/or they have also used boarding and in-home pet sitters.
Samantha is not in a rush to adopt, stating that she wants to be sure that it’s a good fit. I explained to her that ARG’s goal is to place a dog in the perfect, forever home. We don’t want to have to re-home a dog. She would prefer a male age 1-3 years old.
I explained that due to the fact that she splits her time between her home and Michael’s that I would make arrangements for HVs at both locations.
Samantha and Michael enjoy hiking and being outdoors.

    HOME EVALUATION FORM

To the Home Evaluator: This form can be used when doing a home visit to evaluate a potential family for a rescued Airedale. Adoption or foster applicants you are visiting have already met preliminary criteria by having their Adoption Application accepted and have passed the telephone interview.

When doing a home visit, please attempt to get as much information as asked for on this form. Ask questions, where appropriate, and get as many details as you can about the home environment. Some of the questions on this form may not apply to a particular home so use your own judgment.

If possible, bring a friend or another rescue volunteer with you on the home visit. This helps both for the purpose of having another pair of eyes and ears to assist you in making a complete evaluation and for your own personal safety.

Size of Home [estimate square footage if possible]:
Due to COVID-19, I met Katherine and Jon outside of her home on the front sidewalk. I did not see inside of the home

    Setting [check all that apply]:
    Rural
     Semi rural
    x Suburban
     Semi urban
     Urban
     Wooded
     Open acreage
     Waterfront
     Highway frontage
     Neighborhood street frontage
    City environment
    Property bordering on park/field

Condition of Home [check all that apply]:
    Immaculate
    Well-kept
    Lived in but clean
    Exterior untidy
    Interior untidy
    Exterior unkempt/poorly maintained
    Interior trashed/dirty

    Describe the home interior:
[Include type of furnishings, flooring, and general appearance. For example, “antiques with museum atmosphere,” “shabby furniture,” “brand new furniture and/or carpet,” “badly stained carpet,” “hardwood/ vinyl flooring with some carpet/rugs,” etc.]

    Accommodations:
[Describe what accommodations the home has for a dog and where the dog will be left when the owners are not at home. For example, “crate in kitchen/laundry room,” “baby gate across kitchen,” “no crate planned,” “pen in basement,” “pen in garage,” “outdoor run,” etc. Include complete description of any pen or kennel [chain link run, dirt run with chicken wire, etc]. Will the dog ever be left chained out or left unattended in a fenced-in yard? Describe the fencing, if any, and consider security of fence.]

Katherine & Jon’s home does not have a fenced back yard. I would guess the neighborhood bylaws do not allow fence. There are sidewalks throughout the neighborhood and Katherine will leash walk her Airedale. There are dog waste stations scattered around the neighborhood. She said there is a lot of call out by the next door if you are seen not picking up dog waste and no one allows their dog off leash in the neighborhood. There is also a dog park and they understand that a dog park is not always a great environment for the Airedale.

    Children:
[Give ages of children, if any, and pay special attention to the behavior of the children, the parents’ responses and method of discipline, and the children’s interactions with other pets. Note whether parents always supervise young children with other pets and if the parents seem to expect the child/children to be “responsible” for the care of the pets.]

New baby to be born in spring

    Family Environment:
[Describe the behavior of the adults among themselves, and to any other pets or children. Are they respectful, hectic, noisy, loud, quiet, commanding, etc.?]
Katherine and her husband Jon took care of Katherin’es childhood Airedale in her later years of life. He had not been around Airedales prior to Katherine’s dog.

    Life-Style Compromises:
[Has the applicant thought through life-style compromises pet ownership will require? Give details.]

Yes, Katherine & Jon have thought about their life style. Mostly about the new baby to be born in April. They wanted to ensure they went through the approval process though.

    Other Pets:
[Describe number, type, age, and gender of the other pets and give complete description of their apparent health and well-being. Things to note would be skin or flea problems, condition of nails, overweight or underweight, type of collar, id tags other pets have, etc.]
    No Pets

Owner Interaction With Other Pets: N/A as they did not have other pets
o Describe the relationship all family members seem to have to other pets.
o What role will the dog play in applicant’s life?
o Are the other pets treated like family members?
o How do the other animals behave?
o If applicant is looking for an additional dog, or cat why does applicant what another?
o Does applicant believe that the new dog will “train” old dog or vice versa?
o Has applicant ever owned more than one dog or cat at the same time?
o Is applicant prepared for the increased work, expense [including vet cost], and commotion?
    o How committed is adopter?
o What are the owner’s responses to behaviors good and bad?
o Do owners demand perfection or have unreasonable expectation regarding behaviors?
o Do other dogs in the home obey happily?
o Are the other dogs out of control and undisciplined?
o Do the owners appear to know some basic training techniques?
o How do the animals react to the owner’s response?

    Important Question to Answer:
o Explain that re-homing a dog is stressful for the dog.
o That often the rescued dog they want to adopt or foster may have training accidents, even if they are housebroken, while they are in their new home or foster care, for the first few weeks.
o Ask the applicant what they would do or how they would react to the new dog having an accident.

    What was their reply?

    Additional Information:
o Please describe any additional information about the home environment that you feel is pertinent. New baby
o Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home? New baby but I think they would be good adopters
    o If so, what?
o “Gut feelings” are considered important. Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant? Yes, I would leave my own dog with them.
    o Explain.

    Conclusion:

    Approve Applicant
    Do not approve applicant
Approve after additional counseling of applicants
    and/or
Approve after modifications to the home environment

    Please describe:

They would need a surrendered Airedale that would be good with children.
