Airedale Rescue Group
Phone Interview
Anne Daletski
November 18, 2021
Anne is going through a rough patch right now, but sounds pretty up beat and resilient. Her husband passed away just 3 months ago. Her 12 year old Airedale, “Buddy” has been diagnosed with spindle cell cancer. I did just a bit of research on spindle cell cancer and am certain that my Sam Milford had the same thing…often misdiagnosed by even the best Vets.
Buddy was diagnosed before Anne lost her husband. They were told that surgery was the option with anywhere from 4-19 radiation treatments as follow up to the surgery. He would have to have general anesthesia for each treatment. She and her husband decided that they would try a Wholistic Vet instead and she is pleased thus far with their decision.
Anne grew up with Irish Setters (Anne is 70 years old) but somehow came to love Airedales even more! Buddy is her 3rd Airedale. “Wally” was the 1st and she/they had him for 12 ½ years. Next came “Lucky”. He had issues with his aorta and only lived to age 10. Now she has Buddy. They got Buddy as a puppy from a farm in Idaho. The folks had a lot of Airedales for hunting. They just had a couple of litters…one from which they got Buddy. Buddy is not neutered. She states that she did not neuter any of her Airedales as she said that the research shows, though somewhat inconclusively, that perhaps neutering robs them of needed hormones etc. for proper growth. I told her that an Airedale obtained through ARG will be neutered. She stated that she understood. She further plead her case stating that she is very conscientious and her ‘dales never ran loose so she said she did not worry about them in that regard.
Anne has a total of 3 acres. Per Google Earth it is rural/suburban. All lots are at least 1 ½ acres. She has a small fenced area that she put up when her husband was ill. They previously had a system where one would walk Buddy and when he’d had enough, the walker would call back to the house and the “dog taxi” would come pick them both up. However, this wasn’t possible during her husband’s illness and subsequently after his death.
She does not want to bring another Airedale into the home while Buddy is alive, but is just getting the wheels in motion. She can’t imagine life without an Airedale.
Anne is retired. She spends a good deal of her time outside with Buddy. She is a water color artist, so does this in her free time. The time Buddy spends alone is minimal…just errands. She doesn’t like to leave him alone. She describes herself as a home body. She has always chipped her dogs. She has no family. She relied on a neighbor (personal reference) to care for Buddy while she was going back and forth to the hospital when her husband was ill. It was close to a 2 hour trip each way…longer depending upon traffic. She described her neighbor as being unbelievably helpful. She does have a college roommate nearby.
She would prefer a male. Will accept anything between the ages of 6 months to 10 years. However, she does say that if she should accept an older/elderly ‘dale that she would need assistance with medical bills. Therefore, ideally she would like a “healthy” dog…one for which she could purchase pet insurance. Equally important is that he be a sweet dog. She relates that she has a fear of dogs other than her own as she stated that she was bitten several times by “aggressive” dogs and she wants no part of a dog that may have those issues. She would love to have a dog that is being surrendered due to a change in living conditions…death, divorce etc.December 23, 2021 at 10:48 am in reply to: 2021 George and Beth Childress, Marietta GA, Good Fence (wood with e-fence), ADT Exp, 0-3 hrs alone_adopted 2022 Luda now Georgia #28295Happy to help. Subject: Airedale Rescue GroupGood morning and Happy Holidays to you both!
I hope you have remained happy and healthy this past year, and hopefully 2022 will be much better!
I’m wondering if you’d be able to help ARG with another home visit?
These folks live in Marietta, GA and currently have a 4 yr. old ‘dale and would like another…they put their 9 ½ yr. old ‘dale down about a year ago. So…”Harley” would like a brother or sister!
Let me know if this is do-able. These folks are out of town for the Holidays, so no rush until after the New Year. Thanks in advance for your consideration, and I’ll wait to hear from you.
Warmly,
Kelly Imbody, ARG

We are so looking forward to a visit to get this rescue approval completed. We will be back in town on the 31st and will be ready and available for what comes next.
I know you have been busy this week as I have heard from my friend and also our trainer/daycare/border that you have been in contact. Hope you have a great Christmas and New Year and we will be on the lookout for a call from Stuart.
Thanks for all you do for the breed.

George and Beth, I’d like to introduce you to Stuart. He will be contacting you to schedule your home visit. He is aware that after the 1st of the year is best. Please look for a phone call/text/email from him…check your spam etc. His area code is 404 so it may not be a “robo call”!!!
Please decide amongst you as to the level of precautions you will take in light of the recent increase in Covid cases. It is totally fine to defer the interior of the home.
Should any of you have any questions/concerns, please reach out to me. I’ll be anxious to hear how it went! I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy & healthy New Year.

December 11, 2021Beth and George are Airedale savvy. They had to put down their 9 ½ year old ‘dale “Bailey” just over a year ago. They also have a 4 year old Airedale named “Harley.” Harley is ready for a brother or sister and George has finally said that he is ready for another. Their home is a 2 story brick, wooded suburban lot and the neighborhood does not appear as though it would get heavy traffic. (per Google Earth) There is a wood picket fence in the back yard.
Both are retired. They enjoy RVing and took both ‘dales with them on a 6 week out West vacation. They want to do the same with this adopted ‘dale and Harley.
They are fenced (wood) with an underground electronic fence as “reinforcement” as Harley was digging his way out. This behavior has stopped since installing the electronic fence and getting him neutered. They have no family in the area. Harley goes to Doggie Day Care 1-2 times/week. When unable to take him with them, they board him with the gal who owns the Doggie Day Care. Harley has the run of the house & the same is hoped for an adopted ‘dale unless he/she can’t be trusted…in that event they’ll use a crate until such time as the ‘dale proves trustworthy.
They are not looking at any other breeds. Beth asked about applying to other regional groups. I explained that generally groups prefer to adopt within their region, but will make exceptions especially with hard to place dogs.
They have had several different breeds in the past. I asked how they landed on an Airedale. Beth explained that her brother had an Airedale years ago. She wasn’t around him a lot. After their lab died, they knew they wanted a good sized dog, so they thought about an Airedale…Beth said she didn’t know she would love them so much.Vet: Harley is up to date on all shots/vaccinations. Tech describes him as “great with people.” He is good and well-behaved. There are no alerts on his chart. Applicants do all preventative care.
Reference: Reference has known applicants for at least 10 years. They live in the same neighborhood and have become good friends over the years. She describes Harley as a “wonderful, sweet dog.” Harley is well behaved. He is impeccably groomed. He is good with other dogs. Reference has Havanese (Havanese has aggression issues, so Harley doesn’t spend time with her dog. She says that her dog just doesn’t like other dogs.) Reference also knew Bailey, the applicant’s ‘dale that they put down about a year ago. Bailey was as sweet as Harley. They tried everything and spared no expense on Bailey. They are great people and love their dogs. Take them with them in their RV. They have a beautiful yard that is perfect for dogs.
Sandy Watson: (boarding, training, Doggie Day Care): She couldn’t say enough about these folks! Harley goes to day care 2-3 times/week. Describes him as a wonderful dog. A lot of personality and sweet. He is well socialized and displays no aggression.December 23, 2021 at 10:44 am in reply to: Private: 2021 John Burns – Raleigh NC 27613, No Fence #28291John,
Just spoke with Christina and she is good with deferring your home visit. Please keep an eye on our website as well as our facebook site. If a dog peaks your interest, reach out. We do the same from our end as well. Our goal is to put the dog with the BEST/PERFECT family. It’s now just “hurry up and wait.” Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions/concerns.

I do think its good that he has been re- interviewed because their family has changed – the kids are grown up! I did not like the dog run in the past – his yard was not completely fenced so did he mention that his yard was not fenced? I think I saw that he said no fence – which is better

Good morning Christina,
I’ve pretty much completed vetting John, though I do have an add’l. question for him and have reached out to him. Provided that everything checks out, do you want me to schedule a home visit for him in light of the fact that he was preapproved (Birk). They are in the same home…only difference is that the dog run they had at one time is gone.
Please see the attached and give me your thoughts on how you’d like me to proceed. Thanks Christina!

Phone Interview: John Burns
12/14/2021John and his family live in a 2 story home on what looks to be a quiet cul-de-sac. The lot appears to be wooded. They are not fenced though both neighbors are fenced so a fence runs along the sides but is absent in front and back. John states that they used to have a fenced dog run, but no longer have that.
The Burns have a history with ARG. They adopted “Birk” years ago, but John states that he thinks he had undisclosed health issues plus he nipped at his son who at the time was he thinks 7 or 8. They made the determination at that time to return Birk to ARG…Christina Prange took him in.
John works from home having started a new job about a year ago. He does state that he will have to do some traveling however. His wife works both from home and goes into the office. Depending on their schedules, the dogs would be alone for 8 hrs. but John doesn’t anticipate this happening too often.
They currently have a 10 year old Australian cattle dog/lab mix named “Addie”. She gets along well with other dogs. John and his family are fosters for “BEST FRIENDS” and have fostered several dogs through them. John grew up with Airedales. And in the late 90’s he thinks it was through ARG that he adopted “Angus” from a kill shelter.
He is well aware of the grooming needs as well as the personality of ‘dales.Vet: Tech I spoke with said that Addie (their 10 yr. old Lab/Aussie mix) hasn’t been seen since 11/2020 at which time she was brought in for xrays due to some lameness…possibly an ACL tear. She is over due for Lepto and a stool specimen. Up to date on rabies & distemper. No record of flea/tick prevention, though this can be obtained through other suppliers as well, so I don’t consider this to be worrisome, but will get back with John. Also there is a note on the chart that says she has some dog aggression. Requires sedation for nail trims. I am trying to contact personal reference and this I hope will provide additional point of view/clarification. As noted, will follow up with John regarding my concerns after speaking with personal reference.
12/20/2021 Spoke with personal reference: Reference has known applicant for about 10 years. Describes Addie as a good dog, good with other dogs. She stays in her fence when visiting and doesn’t try to get out. She is well behaved and has never seen any aggression. Reference has 2 rescues…a Rot-mix and a Collie/Aussie mix and Addie does well with them. Addie is good with the kids. States that applicant has dog watched for other folks without issues. Describes the Burns as a “great family for another dog.”
I’ve sent a text to John…just want to clarify the aggression(?) issue.
12/21/21 Spoke with John. States Addie as a puppy played hard with their other dog Coco so when she was boarded played hard/rough with other dogs, so vet labeled her as having aggression issues. He states that they’ve had no issues when fostering and personal reference concurs/supports this. May be a bit behind re: flea/tick prevention because of the pandemic he says, but also will use collar at times for same.December 23, 2021 at 10:42 am in reply to: Private: 2021 John Burns – Raleigh NC 27613, No Fence #28288From: Airedale Rescue Group

I did go over this. That rescues come from all back grounds — some not so good. I related a rescue rehome that I recently did for ARG (no names were named). That the ladies husband (after some sleuth work on her part) bares a serious resemblance to the rescued dog’s previous owner who apparently was abusive in some way — they are now working with a trainer, vet and psychologist for the dog. An accident in the house would not bother them and they have committed to training if needed. I always offer to keep in touch with the families, for any crisis or needs they might have.
Additiol Information:
Please describe any additional information about the home environment that you feel is pertinent. Just the repair of the small gap/damage in the fenced yard in back. They had it covered when we were there with Ozzy.
Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home? No
If so, what? — my only suggestion would be because of the 4 year old — that it can’t be a wild man! It needs to come from a fairly stable situation.
o “Gut feelings” are considered important. Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant?
Explain. Yes, they even want to dog sit for us. I told them that when we can’t take Ozzy with us — we hire the same guy to come stay at our house with him.

Phone Interview: Karen Perlmutter
October 18, 2021The Perlmutter family lives in a Cape Cod style home, there are what appear to be townhomes across the street. A small strip mall type complex is a few blocks away.
They have 3 young children ages 11, 9 and 4. Neighborhood children visit the home frequently. The yard is fenced with chain link and a segment of wood fence.
They recently (April 2021) put their Shizhu down and they have been without their Airedale “Sully” for about 4 years.
I asked why the Shizhu? Karen said that when they got married she wanted “something to cuddle, but we weren’t ready for a baby…so we got “Henry”.
They are not looking at any other breeds.
Karen works as a Therapist in a private practice.and states that many of her co-workers bring their dogs to the office, so this is a possibility. Her husband works from home part of the week.
I addressed their under estimation of the cost of taking care of a dog. Addressed food, grooming, annual exam, training, medications etc. and that the cost would definitely exceed $500.00.
They have family in the area…”a ton of family” and they also have a neighbor that doesn’t have a dog to help with care/boarding should they need it.
They got Sully from a breeder in Kentucky at the age of 3 months.
Karen states the children love animals and are anxious to get a dog.
I told Karen that ARG is very slim on dogs right now and that it could be a long wait.Vet:
Sully was brought in frequently towards end of life for medications and consults. He was kept up to date on all required vaccinations as was Henry. No red flags on charts.
Ref:
Personal reference has known applicant for about 6 years. She didn’t know Sully but did know Henry. She describes the Perlmutter family as “lovely.” Henry was kept groomed and was sweet, but kind of a grumpy old man. The children love to play with animals and are very sweet. She describes their oldest child as a good leader for the 2 younger children and can see him helping to care for a dog. The parents are loving and it is an active family.October 29, 2021 at 3:57 pm in reply to: 2021 James Downar, Charleston SC, NO Fence, ADT Exp, NO pets, no children #28197Phone interview from memory:
Applicant was very friendly. Have had 2 ‘dales in the past. Max was last ‘dale and they have been w/o for about 4 years. Town home, single story end unit. Woods behind. Dog park within 3 miles. Pet fee required, no breed restrictions. Not looking at other breeds. Max was rescued thru ARG in Winston-Salem. Applicants don’t travel and are retired…day trips max. Would take ‘dale with them. Also help take care of neighbors dogs. Personal ref. has known applicants x 10 yrs. & lives in same neighborhood. Describes Max as having a great temperment. Describes applicants as great people. Applicants volunteer with Meals on Wheels, spend time with neighbors and take day trips. No sex preference. Would prefer 3-8 yr. old.

I just wanted to let you know that Valerie gave you a glowing report…you have been moved to the list “Waiting for a Spare ‘dale”.
Please keep an eye on our website as well as our Facebook page. If you see a ‘dale that seems a good fit, reach out. We do the same on our end. Unfortunately I can’t tell you how long the wait will be as we never know when a ‘dale will be coming into Rescue. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’ve any questions or concerns. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful fall weather and be well!
Warmly,

To the Home Evaluator: This form can be used when doing a home visit to evaluate a potential family for a rescued Airedale. Adoption or foster applicants you are visiting have already met preliminary criteria by having their Adoption Application accepted and have passed the telephone interview.
When doing a home visit, please attempt to get as much information as asked for on this form. Ask questions, where appropriate, and get as many details as you can about the home environment. Some of the questions on this form may not apply to a particular home so use your own judgment.
If possible, bring a friend or another rescue volunteer with you on the home visit. This helps both for the purpose of having another pair of eyes and ears to assist you in making a complete evaluation and for your own personal safety.

The floors are laminate and in good shape with some area rugs. The home is attached and fairly new – less than 10 years old.

For example, “crate in kitchen/laundry room,” “baby gate across kitchen,” “no crate planned,” “pen in basement,” “pen in garage,” “outdoor run,” etc. Include complete description of any pen or kennel [chain link run, dirt run with chicken wire, etc]. Will the dog ever be left chained out or left uttended in a fenced-in yard? Describe the fencing, if any, and consider security of fence.]The couple sold their house and are currently renting long term. They said that their landlord is open to adding a fence to the backyard. They do not want to crate the Airedale, but are willing if required. They plan on walking the dog and/or taking him/her to dog parks. They don’t plan to leave the dog out on a chain. We talked about Airedales being adventurous and how owners must be vigilant to never leave an Airedale on its own.
Children: NA
[Give ages of children, if any, and pay special attention to the behavior of the children, the parents’ responses and method of discipline, and the children’s interactions with other pets. Are they respectful, hectic, noisy, loud, quiet, commanding, etc.?]The couple met later in life and there is a great deal of love and respect between the two. They are fairly quiet, but also now the challenges that Airedales pose as they went through this with Max, who they adopted at the age of 3. I think they will be patient and kind owners.
Life-Style Compromises:
[Has the applicant thought through life-style compromises pet ownership will require? Give details.]
Yes, they are very ready to adopt and plan on being with the pup 24/7.Other Pets:
[Describe number, type, age, and gender of the other pets and give complete description of their apparent health and well-being. Things to note would be skin or flea problems, condition of ils, overweight or underweight, type of collar, id tags other pets have, etc.]No other pets are in the house.
Owner Interaction With Other Pets:
o Describe the relationship all family members seem to have to other pets.
o What role will the dog play in applicant’s life?
o Are the other pets treated like family members?
o How do the other animals behave?

o Does applicant believe that the new dog will “train” old dog or vice versa?
o Has applicant ever owned more than one dog or cat at the same time?
o Is applicant prepared for the increased work, expense [including vet cost], and commotion?
o How committed is adopter?
o What are the owner’s responses to behaviors good and bad?
o Do owners demand perfection or have unreasonable expectation regarding behaviors?
o Do other dogs in the home obey happily?
o Are the other dogs out of control and undisciplined?
o Do the owners appear to know some basic training techniques?
o How do the animals react to the owner’s response?Important Question to Answer:
o Explain that re-homing a dog is stressful for the dog. Check.
o That often the rescued dog they want to adopt or foster may have training accidents, even if they are housebroken, while they are in their new home or foster care, for the first few weeks.
o The potential adopters understand this as they had issues with Max early on.
o Ask the applicant what they would do or how they would react to the new dog having an accident. What was their reply? Jim explained similar issues with Max and said he worked with Max and was patient.
Additiol Information:
o Please describe any additional information about the home environment that you feel is pertinent.
o Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home?
o There is only one thing to bring up. Jim is obese and never got up from his chair. He said he had gained a lot of weight after Max died. Kathy said that she walked Max every day. She is spry and got up and down several times. I feel she would be the prime walker. This was my only concern and their health issues. Otherwise they are perfectly nice people.
o If so, what?
o “Gut feelings” are considered important. Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant?
o No. Cedric is too fast. I don’t think that they could run after him if he got out. I think they would give him a lot of attention, though. I’d recommend an older Airedale that’s not a rascal like my sweet Cedric.
o Explain.Conclusion:

________________________________________Additional Suggestions To The Home Evaluator:
• If you need to take notes during the visit, please do so discreetly on a small note pad, rather than on this form. It is preferred to have the applicants feel at ease with you and to be themselves. Complete this form after the visit is over, when you are not in the presence of the applicants.
• Qualities to note are sincerity, commitment, tolerance of normal animal behavior, honest representation of the home environment, children’s behavior with other pets, and expected role of the children in pet care. Obtain explanations about the absence of any family members during the visit. Feel free to ask leading questions to begin productive conversation. Often good conversation will reveal far more than questions.
• Do not make any promises to the applicants or indicate whether or not they will be approved to adopt or foster. Please refrain from discussing any particular animal presently in rescue that may become available for adoption.
________________________________________October 4, 2021 at 2:23 pm in reply to: 2021 Nataliya Fleshler, Atlanta GA, Good fence, ADT Exp, 2 child, 1 ADT #28142Okay on the visit. I had a busy week and just got to your email. Sorry for the delay.
1) Our rescue Maddie that we got at 6 months was a frantic runner. She had been tied to a tree 24/7 and abused. We had to catch her in the house to put a lead on for a walk. But it only took a couple of months and she calmed down “with us”. Two years later, she stopped trying to get out an open door. In fact, started waiting for the leash.
2) Yes, I’m concerned that a puppy developed the “run” personality! That is because it is confined too much, overly neglected or fearful from abuse.
3) Johnson Ferry Road is a very busy 4 lane divided Highway only 150 feet from their front door.
4) I am hesitant to take Jazzy because I don’t want the interview to be about her. You may recall that “Expert” Airedale Trainer Andrea Chase returned our sweet Jazzy to ARG (Yager’s) labeling her as dangerous and untrainable. No problems here. Humm.So I want to go and evaluate the people and the dog without any other distraction. I’ll email them tonight.
StewOctober 4, 2021 at 2:23 pm in reply to: 2021 Nataliya Fleshler, Atlanta GA, Good fence, ADT Exp, 2 child, 1 ADT #28141Hi Stewart and Kelly,
Thank you both for dedicating time to this amazing cause. After further discussion with my husband, we decided to hold off on the adoption process right now. I apologize for taking up your time with this process. We hope that at some point in the future we may be able to revisit this opportunity.
Thank you again Stewart and Kelly from the bottom of our hearts.
