    Phone Interview: Georgia Robinson
    January 7, 2022

Georgia and her husband live in a Townhouse. The neighborhood consists of about 20 townhomes, has a small dog walking area. The neighborhood backs up to a residential neighborhood consisting of single dwellings and this she said is where she would walk a dog as she and her husband walk here as well. Peachtree St. she said is very busy and she stated that she would never walk a dog out by this street as the “cars whizz by.” They have family close by and walk the back way vs out by Peachtree St. There is no fence though she does say that their neighborhood is gated.
Georgia’s parents live about 5 min. away. Their 30 yr. old son may be moving back in with them…he is on the Autism spectrum and works until about 11 am each day. Georgia works part time as an RN…2 days one week, 3 days the next. She also has a gentleman that takes care of her cat when needed and would use him to take care of a dog if they had to leave it.
Georgia’s husband also works part time.
Their 1 dog was an Airedale…put down at age 8 due to kidney cancer. Since then they have had: Giant Schnauzer, Yorkie, and most recently a Cockapoo. She states they aren’t in a hurry. Want it to be a good fit. Georgia relates that she would prefer to rescue and that her husband said the only rescue he would consider would be an Airedale.
They would prefer a younger dog…puppy to a “couple of years”. Though she stated on the application no sex preference she did say maybe a “female, because aren’t they smaller?” She did state that temperament would be most important. They have a 14 y/o cat. Also an 8 mo. old grandson, though not certain how often they see him.
They have never rescued before. I explained that from ARG’s end, placement goal is the “perfect fit/family.”

    Hey Christina,

I met Anne Daletski yesterday. She’s delightful and would be a wonderful adopter of a dale in need. She’s very knowledgeable about the breed. She has a psychology background and has actually worked with dogs with problems and been able to resolve those problems through training. Her set up is great with a large fenced yard and a big front porch. Heaven for a dog. The house is great and Buddy is clearly a valued member of the family.

Possibly the only thing I really need to tell you to get her approved is that her dog Buddy was diagnosed with cancer 9 months ago at age 11. The treatment option was grueling and I wouldn’t have put an older dale through it either. The vet said if they did the aggressive treatment, Buddy might live 6-9 months. They opted for holistic treatment at great expense to them. And the result is Buddy is living his best life as a senior dog. He’s affectionate, active, able to defend the palace while making friends with the Fed Ex driver. Buddy is such a sweet old man. I loved meeting him. He isn’t on death’s door – he’s such a happy dale. And it has been 9 months.

Thanks for sending me on a visit. I really, really enjoyed it. I’m happy to help in other ways – we are so appreciative of the dogs we’ve gotten from rescue groups. Pic of Eddie attached.

    Merry Christmas!

    Phone Interview: Melissa Woolf
    11/16/2021

Melissa and her husband live in a suburban, heavily wooded area. The home is brick and the backyard has a wrought iron fence. (per Google Earth)
They currently have a 1 ½ year old mixed breed female, named Annie. They put their Wheaton Terrier down about a year ago. They have also had a Schnoodle and 2 Lhaso Apsos in the past. They want a bigger dog and are very interested in the Airedale. Melissa noted that she has rescued in the past, most recently their current dog, Annie. Annie goes to Doggie Day Care once a week, was in several foster homes before they adopted/rescued her. Apparently Annie was hit by a car, and spent time in multiple foster homes during recovery. She relates that she is very friendly with other dogs. Annie would like a playmate.
Melissa works from home and will not be returning to the office. Her husband travels for his job throughout the Carolinas and Va.
Preferences are 3 years or younger. No sex preference. She is not considering other breeds. She has contacted ATRA as she stated that they seem to have dogs, whereas ARG…not so much. She expressed a desire to speak with the foster of any dog that they would be considered for.

Vet: Annie is up to date on all vaccinations. There is nothing untoward noted on her chart.
Personal reference: Has known Melissa for 4-5 years. Has 2 mixed breed himself. States Annie is well adjusted and playful. Follows basic commands and is very friendly. He could not comment on training/discipline habits of Melissa, but did state that Annie seems to mind.

    Hi Kelly,
I just did the visit with Melissa and her husband. Their house will be great for an Airedale. They have a huge fenced backyard. They have a very dog friendly home. Very open and not a lot of stuff that can be broken. They currently have a mixed breed dog (about 45 lbs) so the are used to having dogs. They did have two but had to put one down due to age. They actually use the same vet as we do. Also we are friends with their next door neighbors and they told us that Melissa watches their dog when they are out of town.
The dog will be crated when they are out of the house but only then. Melissa works from home so that amount of time would be small. Their current dog occasionally goes to camp bow wow for fun.
I think they would be a fine Airedale family. One thing I did tell them that seemed to surprise them a bit was that Airedale’s can be as large as 100 lbs (though most are not). I do think they would like a standard size (60 lb ish).
Let me know if there is anything else you need to know.

    Hi Susan,
My thanks for taking this home visit on! Please find attached Annie’s application to ARG and the notes from my phone interview. She seems really sweet and is considering helping ARG as a volunteer in the future. Her ‘dale has cancer & prognosis isn’t good. She doesn’t want to bring another dog in while she still has this ‘dale, but wants to be ready. I’ll introduce you both via email, reiterating what Christina suggested re: Covid precautions and will leave that between the 2 of you when you make contact and schedule. Once you’ve completed the home visit, just jot your notes down and send them to me. Please reach out to me with any questions or concern. Again, many thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

    Airedale Rescue Group
    Phone Interview: Kimberly Frazier
    12/18/2021
Kimberly lives alone. She has one acre, no fence. She is on a road that connects to a highway. The property appears very rural according to Google Earth. She has a 5 yr. and an 8 yr. old Shih-Zous. She wants a dog that she can hike with. Kimberly grew up with an Airedale named “Lady” whom her family adopted/rescued at the age of about 1 she thinks. She moved to Sparta about 1 year ago but continues to vet in Greensboro where she moved from. Her daughter lives in Greensboro and Kimberly said “it’s no big deal to go to the vet there as I have a lot of reasons to go to Greensboro.” Her daughter will take care of the dogs if she can’t take them with her, but Kimberly relates that she always tries to get an Airbnb that will take dogs. She will take care of her boxer-lab mix if/when daughter goes out of town.
Kimberly would prefer a female as she feels that her male Shih-zou would get along better with a female. Basil takes “a while to warm up” to other dogs. Kimberly took a grooming class so that she could groom her Shih-zous, but says that they go to the groomer for nails and once a year to the groomer for a full spa treatment in between home grooms.
Kimberly works from home…has always worked from home so there is no possibility of returning to the office. She is in recruiting for Cone Health.
We discussed the possibility of a Facetime/Zoom home visit as she is out in the boonies! Discussed Covid precautions if a home visit is done due to the recent uptick in cases.
She isn’t considering any other breeds. She is aware that costs could exceed the $900 she put on application due to unplanned visits. The female (8 yr. old) was a therapy dog and is very comfortable around other dogs, cats, people etc.

Personal reference: Has known Kimberly since she moved to Sparta just about a year ago. Reference owns a gallery. States that Kimberly has done a “fabulous job of introducing herself to the community.” She relates that the folks of Sparta feel that “she is a wonderful addition to their small mountain town.” She relates that Kimberly loves her dogs. She takes them everywhere with her and it’s obvious that she takes good care of them. Reference says that when watching her interact with the dogs that she “seems very mindful of them.” She describes the dogs as well behaved. They interact well with other dogs, she hasn’t witnessed any aggressive behavior. Reference states that she hasn’t been to applicant’s home, but is going next week. She relates that she does know that she has 2 cats that are inside/outside cats. That if it gets cold, she makes sure she has the litter box ready etc. Reference cannot think of any reason that applicant should not be considered. Applicant made no reference to her cats when we spoke.

Vet: Both Maggie and Basil are up to date on all shots/vaccinations. Applicant purchases flea/tick and heart worm prevention about every 6 months. Both are due for wellness check in May of 2022. No behavior flags or otherwise on chart.

Anne, Susan has graciously agreed to do your home visit. She will be in contact with you to get that scheduled, so check your SPAM folder and/or text messages. With the surge in Covid cases, we are asking that you both take whatever precautions you are comfortable with. It is up to you both as to whether you would like the visit to include the interior of the home. It is totally fine to just do the outside. We want to know that an Airedale would be safe…fence in good repair as well as gates if you’re fenced, neighborhood, yard etc.

    Phone Interview
    Anne Daletski
    November 18, 2021
Anne is going through a rough patch right now, but sounds pretty up beat and resilient. Her husband passed away just 3 months ago. Her 12 year old Airedale, “Buddy” has been diagnosed with spindle cell cancer. I did just a bit of research on spindle cell cancer and am certain that my Sam Milford had the same thing…often misdiagnosed by even the best Vets.
Buddy was diagnosed before Anne lost her husband. They were told that surgery was the option with anywhere from 4-19 radiation treatments as follow up to the surgery. He would have to have general anesthesia for each treatment. She and her husband decided that they would try a Wholistic Vet instead and she is pleased thus far with their decision.
Anne grew up with Irish Setters (Anne is 70 years old) but somehow came to love Airedales even more! Buddy is her 3rd Airedale. “Wally” was the 1st and she/they had him for 12 ½ years. Next came “Lucky”. He had issues with his aorta and only lived to age 10. Now she has Buddy. They got Buddy as a puppy from a farm in Idaho. The folks had a lot of Airedales for hunting. They just had a couple of litters…one from which they got Buddy. Buddy is not neutered. She states that she did not neuter any of her Airedales as she said that the research shows, though somewhat inconclusively, that perhaps neutering robs them of needed hormones etc. for proper growth. I told her that an Airedale obtained through ARG will be neutered. She stated that she understood. She further plead her case stating that she is very conscientious and her ‘dales never ran loose so she said she did not worry about them in that regard.
Anne has a total of 3 acres. Per Google Earth it is rural/suburban. All lots are at least 1 ½ acres. She has a small fenced area that she put up when her husband was ill. They previously had a system where one would walk Buddy and when he’d had enough, the walker would call back to the house and the “dog taxi” would come pick them both up. However, this wasn’t possible during her husband’s illness and subsequently after his death.
She does not want to bring another Airedale into the home while Buddy is alive, but is just getting the wheels in motion. She can’t imagine life without an Airedale.
Anne is retired. She spends a good deal of her time outside with Buddy. She is a water color artist, so does this in her free time. The time Buddy spends alone is minimal…just errands. She doesn’t like to leave him alone. She describes herself as a home body. She has always chipped her dogs. She has no family. She relied on a neighbor (personal reference) to care for Buddy while she was going back and forth to the hospital when her husband was ill. It was close to a 2 hour trip each way…longer depending upon traffic. She described her neighbor as being unbelievably helpful. She does have a college roommate nearby.
She would prefer a male. Will accept anything between the ages of 6 months to 10 years. However, she does say that if she should accept an older/elderly ‘dale that she would need assistance with medical bills. Therefore, ideally she would like a “healthy” dog…one for which she could purchase pet insurance. Equally important is that he be a sweet dog. She relates that she has a fear of dogs other than her own as she stated that she was bitten several times by “aggressive” dogs and she wants no part of a dog that may have those issues. She would love to have a dog that is being surrendered due to a change in living conditions…death, divorce etc.

Happy to help. Send me details when they are available.
    Stew.

    Airedale Rescue Group
    Phone Interview: Beth Childress
    December 11, 2021

Beth and George are Airedale savvy. They had to put down their 9 ½ year old ‘dale “Bailey” just over a year ago. They also have a 4 year old Airedale named “Harley.” Harley is ready for a brother or sister and George has finally said that he is ready for another. Their home is a 2 story brick, wooded suburban lot and the neighborhood does not appear as though it would get heavy traffic. (per Google Earth) There is a wood picket fence in the back yard.
Both are retired. They enjoy RVing and took both ‘dales with them on a 6 week out West vacation. They want to do the same with this adopted ‘dale and Harley.
They are fenced (wood) with an underground electronic fence as “reinforcement” as Harley was digging his way out. This behavior has stopped since installing the electronic fence and getting him neutered. They have no family in the area. Harley goes to Doggie Day Care 1-2 times/week. When unable to take him with them, they board him with the gal who owns the Doggie Day Care. Harley has the run of the house & the same is hoped for an adopted ‘dale unless he/she can’t be trusted…in that event they’ll use a crate until such time as the ‘dale proves trustworthy.
They are not looking at any other breeds. Beth asked about applying to other regional groups. I explained that generally groups prefer to adopt within their region, but will make exceptions especially with hard to place dogs.
They have had several different breeds in the past. I asked how they landed on an Airedale. Beth explained that her brother had an Airedale years ago. She wasn’t around him a lot. After their lab died, they knew they wanted a good sized dog, so they thought about an Airedale…Beth said she didn’t know she would love them so much.

Vet: Harley is up to date on all shots/vaccinations. Tech describes him as “great with people.” He is good and well-behaved. There are no alerts on his chart. Applicants do all preventative care.

Reference: Reference has known applicants for at least 10 years. They live in the same neighborhood and have become good friends over the years. She describes Harley as a “wonderful, sweet dog.” Harley is well behaved. He is impeccably groomed. He is good with other dogs. Reference has Havanese (Havanese has aggression issues, so Harley doesn’t spend time with her dog. She says that her dog just doesn’t like other dogs.) Reference also knew Bailey, the applicant’s ‘dale that they put down about a year ago. Bailey was as sweet as Harley. They tried everything and spared no expense on Bailey. They are great people and love their dogs. Take them with them in their RV. They have a beautiful yard that is perfect for dogs.
Sandy Watson: (boarding, training, Doggie Day Care): She couldn’t say enough about these folks! Harley goes to day care 2-3 times/week. Describes him as a wonderful dog. A lot of personality and sweet. He is well socialized and displays no aggression.

HI – I’m ok with no home visit since we did one many years ago. I do think its good that he has been re- interviewed because their family has changed – the kids are grown up! I did not like the dog run in the past – his yard was not completely fenced so did he mention that his yard was not fenced? I think I saw that he said no fence – which is better

    Good morning Christina,
I’ve pretty much completed vetting John, though I do have an add’l. question for him and have reached out to him. Provided that everything checks out, do you want me to schedule a home visit for him in light of the fact that he was preapproved (Birk). They are in the same home…only difference is that the dog run they had at one time is gone.
Please see the attached and give me your thoughts on how you’d like me to proceed. Thanks Christina!

    Airedale Rescue Group
    Phone Interview: John Burns
    12/14/2021

John and his family live in a 2 story home on what looks to be a quiet cul-de-sac. The lot appears to be wooded. They are not fenced though both neighbors are fenced so a fence runs along the sides but is absent in front and back. John states that they used to have a fenced dog run, but no longer have that.
The Burns have a history with ARG. They adopted “Birk” years ago, but John states that he thinks he had undisclosed health issues plus he nipped at his son who at the time was he thinks 7 or 8. They made the determination at that time to return Birk to ARG…Christina Prange took him in.
John works from home having started a new job about a year ago. He does state that he will have to do some traveling however. His wife works both from home and goes into the office. Depending on their schedules, the dogs would be alone for 8 hrs. but John doesn’t anticipate this happening too often.
They currently have a 10 year old Australian cattle dog/lab mix named “Addie”. She gets along well with other dogs. John and his family are fosters for “BEST FRIENDS” and have fostered several dogs through them. John grew up with Airedales. And in the late 90’s he thinks it was through ARG that he adopted “Angus” from a kill shelter.
He is well aware of the grooming needs as well as the personality of ‘dales.

Vet: Tech I spoke with said that Addie (their 10 yr. old Lab/Aussie mix) hasn’t been seen since 11/2020 at which time she was brought in for xrays due to some lameness…possibly an ACL tear. She is over due for Lepto and a stool specimen. Up to date on rabies & distemper. No record of flea/tick prevention, though this can be obtained through other suppliers as well, so I don’t consider this to be worrisome, but will get back with John. Also there is a note on the chart that says she has some dog aggression. Requires sedation for nail trims. I am trying to contact personal reference and this I hope will provide additional point of view/clarification. As noted, will follow up with John regarding my concerns after speaking with personal reference.
12/20/2021 Spoke with personal reference: Reference has known applicant for about 10 years. Describes Addie as a good dog, good with other dogs. She stays in her fence when visiting and doesn’t try to get out. She is well behaved and has never seen any aggression. Reference has 2 rescues…a Rot-mix and a Collie/Aussie mix and Addie does well with them. Addie is good with the kids. States that applicant has dog watched for other folks without issues. Describes the Burns as a “great family for another dog.”
I’ve sent a text to John…just want to clarify the aggression(?) issue.
12/21/21 Spoke with John. States Addie as a puppy played hard with their other dog Coco so when she was boarded played hard/rough with other dogs, so vet labeled her as having aggression issues. He states that they’ve had no issues when fostering and personal reference concurs/supports this. May be a bit behind re: flea/tick prevention because of the pandemic he says, but also will use collar at times for same.
