Please find attached Sarah’s ARG application, my phone interview notes and a Home Visit evaluation form. You can take what you feel you need or is applicable from the HV evaluation form…the bottom line question we want answered with an emphatic YES! is: Would you feel comfortable leaving your Airedale here?
I will share an email with both you and Sarah shortly, in essence introducing you to each other. Schedule your HV at a convenient time for you both and please feel free to take your ‘dale with you if you wish.
Once you’ve completed your HV, just jot your notes down (preferably in a Word document as it is more compatible with our ARG site) and send them to me.

Phone Interview: Sarah Hemmings
September 24, 2022Sarah lives alone in Athens, GA on what she called an “urban farm”. It is owned by a local land trust and she is one of 3 tenants. She describes it as a working farm with people coming and going all day. She is within walking distance of downtown. She has been in Athens for almost 2 years.
She is fenced with a 4’ tall cedar picket fence with heavy gates and locks. There are 2” between the cedar slats.
She adopted Hattie from ARG when she was 10 yrs. old and she lived until the age of 12.
Sarah currently has “Arthur” a 6 year-old Welsh Terrier. Arthur is a rescue and Sarah is his 4th owner. He was rescued by Sarah when he was 3 through Welsh Terrier Rescue. He is good with other dogs but she has friends and their children who visit frequently and Arthur is muzzled when the children are there. He startles easily and since children ar e unpredictable, she muzzles him. He gets along well with the friend’s dog whom she describes as “just a mutt.”
Sarah would prefer a female. Would consider any ‘dale age 5 through end of life. She offered to foster if ARG has a need and is willing to do Home Visits for ARG.
Groomer: Sees Arthur about every 2 months. He is well taken care of, well-behaved though a bit “bitey”.
Unable to get ahold of vet…no one picks up the phone though Sarah assures me that her vet is very busy…”people are in and out of there all day long.” She describes her vet as a home town vet.
Personal reference: Sounds like he and Sarah had a relationship previously, but was an amicable split. Personal reference has known Sarah since 2008. States that Sarah works hard to help Arthur be better behaved. He describes Arthur as possessive of his space but gets along well with other dogs. Describes Sarah as “endlessly patient.” She has no problem spending money on dog walkers etc. if needed. She is responsible, neat, orderly in her work and life.From: Meghan Green

219-628-0071They only live three blocks from the downtown area of Forest City which is a very cute small town but this house and the abundant grounds make it feel like you’re living in a park in rural America somewhere. This is a well maintained, charming two-story home and I believe it is approximately 1700 ft.². They gave me a full tour of the first floor and Wendy toured the second floor (I’ve been having some difficulty with my back for the last week or so and was unable to negotiate the stairs myself). Wendy was enchanted with the second floor and I thought the entire first floor was fabulous! The furnishings in this home from the early 1900’s highlight the charm and much of it is either vintage or antique but none of their furniture is so precious to them that it’s impossible to live in the house. Their current dog, 13-year-old Shiva, is allowed to go anywhere in the house she desires including on all of the furniture. Shiva is extremely sweet and very clean and fluffy. She is a family member who is obviously loved and treasured by this sweet couple. Jeremiah said that he gives her a bath every two weeks. Shiva is a sweetheart.
Recently Mary and Jeremiah did some pet sitting at their home for a friend’s dog for 10 days. Jeremiah said that Shiva really enjoyed having the company of that dog (he thought the dog was probably a terrier mix). Shiva loved to have the company of this other dog and seemed to have more energy while this dog was around; therefore, both Mary and Jeremiah have changed their mind about waiting until Shiva’s passing and now believe it may actually be a good idea to rescue an Airedale while they still have Shiva if the two dogs prove to be compatible. They believe Shiva would enjoy the company.
Shiva is the fifth Airedale they have owned. She is at a point in her life where she is somewhat incontinent and while I was there she did pee on the floor. Mary calmly went over and cleaned it up. No negative comments were made. No negative vibrations were given off by Mary or Jeremiah. They both said this is something to be expected with an elderly dog. At night Shiva has an area of the house blocked off for her that has slate floors. Their carpet runners are rolled up at night to make clean up of any accidents she may have during the night easy to complete the next morning. When I mentioned to them that a new rescue may have accidents in the house during the first couple of weeks or months, their response was as I expected after seeing Shiva have her little “accident”. They said that wasn’t a problem and that they would work at training the new dog to be housebroken.
This property is Airedale heaven and the people, Mary and Jeremiah, are the angelic overlords of this idyllic Shangri-La. They both appear to be a very healthy, vibrant 75 years old and have no children living in the home with them. Currently the only pet they have is their sweet Airedale, Shiva.
My gut feeling is that these people are perfect Airedale owners. I will probably contact them at some point in the future and make arrangements to go out to lunch with them. They’re very interesting, nice, pleasant people.
I approve both Mary and Jeremiah Councill as applicants to rescue/adopt an Airedale with no restrictions. In my opinion this caring, quiet, calm couple is more than qualified to rescue/adopt either a male or female Airedale of any age. Mary did comment that she misses going for walks with Shiva now that their dog is not strong enough or healthy enough to take the 2 mile walks that they used to take together.
Kelly, thank you for asking me to do this home evaluation. I truly enjoyed meeting this lovely couple and their sweet dog, Shiva.

Phone Interview Jeremiah Councill
8/11/22Per Google Earth the Councill’s neighborhood appears very established with mature trees and homes that appear to be circa 1930’s. They have a fence, which sounds like a stockade type…unable to see between the slats, 6 ft. tall and goes all the way to the ground.
They currently have a 13 y/o female named Sheva. She is per Jeremiah getting “toward the end”. I asked if they have spoken with their vet regarding this and he replied “oh heavens yes.” She is incontinent of stool, doesn’t have use of her left rear leg, sleeps most of the day, has a significant heart murmur and is on cardiac and pain meds.
I asked them if they thought it was prudent to bring another dog into the mix with her being so sick. He explained that they had no intention of doing that…they were just wanting to be prepared for another dog when the time came. At the risk of sounding ageist, I asked him (as per their application) if they thought they’d be able to handle a puppy or young ‘dale. He said that they left all choices open but that they were thinking of an older dog. He offered that at one point they had a cat that was insulin dependent and that he gave the cat it’s insulin everyday, so they would consider a special needs Airedale. They do their own grooming and sound very Airedale savvy.
They have a son who recently moved from PA to Salt Lake City so this would constitute most of their travel as he said they tried to do their traveling in their 60’s and early 70’s so that they’d be able to enjoy it without any trouble. He stated that they have a wonderful kennel nearby and encouraged me to check out their website.
They do their own grooming. The Councill’s are retired and spend their time as composers of operas. Jeremiah goes to the gym, swims, does some weight training and walks. Mary walks daily and exercises at home. They are also studying French. They have family in Asheville, NC
We discussed timeline or lack there of in getting a ‘dale. Also discussed potential lapse in behavior/manners as a result of being relinquished/rescued. These sound like great folks, but would recommend older, well mannered ‘dale. Will contact Vet and personal reference.Personal reference: Has known applicant for 30-40 years and was familiar with all of their Airedales. Relates that they are well taken care of…they are their “baby” and are respected as a member of the family. They are loved and considered important companions. Reference has traveled with applicants and has shared back seat with Airedale on many occasions. Airedales are fed high quality food, are well-behaved and well trained. States she can’t imagine a better family. Reference sees applicants once a week, lives 7-8 miles from applicant. Describes applicants as top notch with humans as well as animals. They have a good understanding of Airedales.
Vet: After multiple calls, getting a recording then getting placed in a que…I resorted to texting my inquiry. Got an instant reply!! Shiva is up to date on exams and vaccinations. Councill’s take very good care of ShivaHi again Mary!

Phone Interview: Meghan Green
8/9/2022Meghan lives in a townhouse. Google Earth shows it as an established neighborhood with mature trees without an apparent traffic issue. She is Airedale experienced in that she recently (1 year ago) lost her ‘dale Duke. She had Duke since he was a puppy, getting him in 2011. She had ADTs as a child stating that her folks have always had Airedales. Her folks live about 25-30 minutes away, are retired and will be the go to if Meghan needs to travel for work/pleasure. She works from home primarily, but does travel locally to call on clients. The dog would be alone for 3-5 hours when she did need to go out for work.
She plans to crate train as she feels that it would provide the dog with a “safe space”. There is a park approx. ¼ mile away and the neighborhood is very walkable. She does not have a fence.
We spoke at length regarding the needs, possible trials and tribulations associated with a rescue as well as the timeline of getting a dog.
Personal reference has known applicant for a long time. Feels that she needs another Airedale. Describes Meghan and her folks as dog lovers. Duke was well behaved and well taken care of.Hmmmm….just read the above notes. Would have to agree with Julie in that applicant isn’t very “engaging”. My notes follow and Mary has agreed once again to do the HV. We’ll see if he follows through.

Phone Interview: Dan LovellDan works from home exclusively and has a 15 y/o son who spends 50% of his time with Dan. The house is a Cape Cod in an established neighborhood. Neighborhood is wooded with mature trees. There does not appear that there would be much traffic on the street in front of his house.
He has a stockade privacy fence and is on a ½ acre lot. He currently has an 11 y/o WFT and has always been interested in the Airedale. He would prefer a puppy, but we discussed the scarcity of same and he stated that he would consider up to a 6 or 7 y/o dog. He has no sex preference. We discussed crate usage if needed and he was amenable to same stating that his WFT was crate trained until he proved himself trustworthy.
He has had the WFT since it was a puppy. The WFT gets along with other dogs. Dan states that he enjoys playing fetch, taking walks and going to the beach with his WFT and would do the same with the addition of an Airedale. Discussed waiting time in that best placement is goal regardless of length of time applicant has been waiting. Encouraged him to keep eye on Facebook page and website. Discussed need for HV and requested he contact his personal reference to call me back as voice mails, texts and emails have not yielded any results.VET: up to date on all exams and vaccinations. Was recently seen for dental cleaning. Is on heart worm prevention and “George Remus” gets along with other dogs. No red flags on client record to preclude adoption.
Personal reference: Has known applicant since 2014. Describes WFT as mellow…”I’ve always liked him.” WFT likes people, is well taken care of and well behaved. Describes applicant as conscientious, mellow and has never seen/heard him yell or be aggressive with WFT. Says he’s responsible, has a decent job and is a good guy.
