  • Greetings,

I am currently in Michigan helping take care of my 90 year old mother who caught Covid. I am not exactly sure when I am returning to NC. I will be in contact when I return.

Hello and Happy New Year! My name is Christina and I’m an ARG volunteer with Kelly. I wanted to introduce all of you as the next step in the ARG process is the home visit.

    Caryn, Marty and Joel –
I would like the three of you to coordinate a time for the home visit, preferably on the weekend since our nights are so short right now and get dark too soon. Caryn is an ARG adopter. Caryn will come to your house and meet all of you – Marty, Joel and Aunt Moe! It is always nice for Airedale families to meet and its good to have Cary Airedale locals! I hope that you all can figure out a time in the next couple of weekends to have the home visit, the last step in the ARG adoption process.

    Thank you all!

    Phone Interview: Marty Goldstein
    12/28/2022

These folks are gonna be great! I spoke with Marty at length. Here’s the skinny:
Backyard is fully fenced with 3 gates. Fencing is privacy fencing. Crate is generally on main floor with another crate in their bedroom. Intends to crate train until dog has proven himself/herself worthy of being left alone to roam the house.
Aunt Moe is very active 75 y/o so her physical status is not an issue.
Both Marty and Joel work from home. Aunt Moe is home all of the time, so dog would rarely be alone.
Intends to get pet insurance again. Is fully aware of all costs involved re: care of ‘dale.
They adopted Buddy from SOAR in 2018 and shortly thereafter developed what they thought were skin/food allergies and treated him for same under the direction of their vet. After almost 3 years of treatment protocols and vet referrals he was dx’d. with a rare lymphoma. 5 sites were bx’d. and all 5 came back positive for T cell lymphoma. Referral was made to oncologist but vet told them what to expect. They opted for palliative care and ultimately put Buddy down 12/9/2022.
They have lived at this address since 2010 having moved to NC from Flint, MC.
They do a lot of walking/hiking.
Adoptive dog MUST get along with other dogs as family has dogs that come visit frequently and sometimes stay for a couple of days. THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.
Does not have a sex preference but admits she’s always had males. No age restriction though Marty admits she doesn’t think she’s emotionally ready for a super Senior ‘dale.
Marty is very aware of needs of rescue…time to decompress and become familiar with routine and realize this is their home.

VET: rave reviews. “Wonderful people, they did everything in their power for Buddy. He was a great dog.” Up to date on all vaccinations. Bravecto for flea/tick prevention. Heart Gard for heartworm. Absolutely no reservations regarding these folks.
Did not call personal reference as phone no. was cut off on application and didn’t feel it was necessary after phone interview and vet reference.

HOME VISIT done by Keith Lehr
    12/17/2022

Keith and his ‘dale Bart visited Rebecca at her apartment and he was very positive after his visit.
Rebecca does live on the 5th floor so Keith felt that she would do best with a middle aged dog…one that didn’t require frequent “outings” during housebreaking and also not an older dog that may have orthopedic problems. There is an elevator that she can use and he also felt that the adoptive dog would need to get along well with other dogs in light of the fact that they may need to ride the elevator (confined space) for a short while.
Rebecca began working from home on December 19th so the dog being alone for a long time isn’t an issue.
Her neighborhood is very walkable. The complex has a gated dog run that is fenced. He did state that it is loud as it is next to a major highway. He saw her apartment and she is currently dog-sitting and Airedale of a friend. Keith stated that Rebecca is a “lovely person.”
She understands the financial commitment and otherwise. He relates that she is recently single. Her ex didn’t like dogs.
    I think she’s made a good choice!!! 😉
Keith gives her a thumbs up with the caveat as noted in the 2nd paragraph above.

    Phone Interview: Rebecca Berlin
    December 4, 2022

Rebecca is a young professional. She lives alone and is currently renting an apartment.
She anticipates that she will begin working exclusively from home on December 19, 2022. She didn’t feel that adopting a dog and then being gone at work all day would be the responsible thing to do, but now that her work situation is changing she is ready.
She does have an application in at NW Mecklenberg Animal Recue. She is interested in a terrier/terrier mix is she goes that route, but is very interested in Airedales. She has a friend that has an Airedale and she dog sits for them frequently…the Airedale was staying with her when I made this phone call.
Rebecca lives in an upstairs apartment and for this reason doesn’t feel that a Senior dog that may have orthopedic issues would be appropriate and also doesn’t want a puppy because of the difficulty of getting outside quickly while housebreaking.
She doesn’t have an age (per se) preference and has no sex preference.
There is a dog park nearby.
Her lease has breed restrictions of: Pitbulls, Chow Chow, American Staffordshire, Rottweiler, Akita, Malamute, Cane Corso.
Rebecca has family nearby…her Mother is close and her Father about an hour away. She related that her Mother would not be an option to take care of a dog due to physical issues. She does have friends that would possibly watch a dog, she would consider a reputable in-home pet sitting service as well. Rebecca herself had done per sitting in the past, “when I was working multiple jobs.”
Rebecca grew up with a Gordon Setter. She currently has no pets. She is interested in fostering (though she has never fostered) and/or adopting.

    Personal ref:
Judy: has know applicant since HS. States she has been encouraging Rebecca to get a dog. Judy lives in Memphis, TN and saw Rebecca about 2-3 mos. ago. Judy relates that Rebecca loves dogs. “She gets so excited whenever she sees one…she wants to meet it.” “She would be a good dog owner. It’s crazy that she doesn’t have a dog yet.” Judy can offer no reason why Rebecca shouldn’t be approved.

    Personal ref:
Lee Ann: has known applicant since 2008. Has not known her to have a dog. Reference has 2 dogs which she adopted from shelter…lab mix & German Shepard mix. Lee Ann lives in Charlotte, but not in same neighborhood. Has not been to dog park that applicant speaks of. Reference states that Rebecca “would be one of the best pet owners.”

    Phone Interview: Candace Keels
    November 7, 2022
Candace lives in a neighborhood of 25-30 homes on a cul-de-sac. She has a privacy fence around the back yard. You are unable to see between the slats and fencing goes all the way to the ground. Her adult son lives with her and works from home. Candace is retired.
She is not considering any other breeds at the time and currently has a female Airedale age 5 and a female Terrier mix, age 10. She found her Airedale on Craig’s List and was about 2 years old when she rescued her. Candace relates that this Airedale had absolutely not social skills when she was rescued. The Terrier mix, she adopted from the local dog/animal shelter. She has had several breeds in the past, but states that she had an Airedale as a child and has always liked the breed. Her ‘dale gets along well with her Terrier mix.
Vet: Cient visits annually. Both dogs are spayed. Tech stated “I love her. The dogs are well-behaved, she is a great.” Client and keeps both dogs up to date regarding vaccinations. There were no red flags on client chart.
Personal reference: Has known client for 45 years. Relates that Candace has no grandchildren so her dogs are her grandchildren. Relates that they sleep with client, she constantly talks to them. Regarding the Airedale when initially brought into the home she was scared. Now is friendly and loving. Relates that the Terrier mix runs around a lot. “She’ll baby, love and be good to the dog. Her son loves animals as much as she does.

    Hi Del,
Just talked to Sarah Hemmings. Told her you’d emailed her early last week. “it’s my busiest week at work” she said. She didn’t see your email. Asked if she’d checked her spam…”oh…let me check that”… nothing.
She said she would respond to the thread that I sent introducing you both. I told her OK, that the ball is in her court.
I am dealing with another applicant that doesn’t return texts/emails/calls either! It’s maddening. You (our volunteers out in the field) are kind enough to do this for us and for them but they don’t follow through with their end of the bargain. If you don’t hear from her, it’s not your committee, as she said she was going to f/u. I truly thank you…hopefully you’ll connect, but if not, it is her loss. (I’m becoming very jaded). Drop me a quick text if you would if you do both end up scheduling a home visit. Thanks again for your perseverance.
    Warmly,
    Kelly

o How do the other animals behave? The other dog was not there

Applicant had an elder Airedale from ARG for companionship for her rescue Welsh. Would like another Airedale for her Welsh Terrier to bond with.

o Ask the applicant what they would do or how they would react to the new dog having an accident.

    What was their reply?
Applicant has pee pads already in case there are adjustment issues. Would have no problem with accidents.

o Please describe any additional information about the home environment that you feel is pertinent.
Think this would be a wonderful environment for an older Airedale.
o Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home? No
    o If so, what?
o “Gut feelings” are considered important. Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant? No
As long as her Welsh Terrier gets along with the rescue Airedale I could not think of a better home. This is a perfect situation for an older Airedale. A young Airedale might need more room to run but a mature dog would be fine there. Sarah is an excellent applicant.

    Conclusion:

    x Approve Applicant
    Do not approve applicant
Approve after additional counseling of applicants
    and/or
Approve after modifications to the home environment

Please describe: Very good situation. Work from home person who loves dogs and has had Airedales all her life.

Please let me know if and/or when you schedule a home visit.

Kel- It is so absolutely frustrating and we understand. I think 3 stikes and you are out is a good guideline.

I was putting him on the hold list. Sometimes I think these applicants think we are at their beck and call and are getting paid, that none of us have lives!!!!

    Phone Interview: Adam Lange
    September 26, 2022

Adam lives in a small suburb of Nashville, TN. He describes it as kind of rural. It is a gated community with approximately 100 homes. He has lived in Goodlettsville for about a year. They currently are not fenced. If/when they do fence HOA requires an iron fence.
They currently have a 5 yr. old Airedale named Odifinn or “Finn” for short. Adam works from home, so Finn spends minimal time alone. They got Finn from a breeder.
Though they are not fenced, Adam relates that they spend a lot of time with Finn out in the yard playing as well as in the house as they have a 20×40 bonus room that is essentially the indoor playground.
They don’t have a preference regarding male or female. They would consider anything from a puppy up to 7-8 yr. old.
Personal reference: Has known applicant for 27 years. Describes them as “good folks”. Finn is well behaved and well taken care of. Says that they spend a lot of time with Finn. Reference has not seen Finn interact with other dogs but knows that they take him to a the dog park.
Vet: current on heart worm, flea/tick prevention. Described as a good client. No alerts on the chart. Tech I spoke with was not familiar with Finn.
