Subject: Airedale Rescue GroupFebruary 14, 2023 at 8:25 pm in reply to: 2022 Bob & Karen Nichols, Grimsley TN, good fence, ADT exp, 2 CATS + Sm Dog! #30217Hi Kelly,
Keith and I visited with Bob and Karen Nichols today. They had a lovely house set back on a neighborhood street but on a cul de sac. They had a large back yard as well. Their home was lovely and immaculate. The garage was neat and very organized. We were greeted by both Bob and Karen and their rescue, from a family member, Latte, a Dachsund mix. Latte immediately raced to his box of toys and brought us a toy but did not share it with us. đ He was a very sweet dog and loved getting belly rubs from his humans. He was very comfortable around them and they definitely loved him. We talked about the Airedales we have lost but still love. They have also had a Welsh Terrier that crossed the Rainbow Bridge a year and a half ago. They rescued a fox terrier as well. They have experience with terriers and definitely Airedales. They have been married 37 years and have 3 children. This all resonated with us because we have been married 42 years and have 2 children. They have dog crates and if the dog they foster is crate trained, they would use a crate. Bob works from home so there is little time that they would actually be away from the dogs. They have two cats that are barn cats and rarely ever come to the house and another cat that is wary of unknown people or animals. He does like Latte. We toured their home and every room had a dog bed or cat castle in it. We asked why they wanted to do this and they said that for years they had adopted amazing Airedales thanks to Rescue Organizations and they wanted to give back and help. They walk their dogs on leashes and take many walks with them. We feel they would be a wonderful home for a foster and would recommend them.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions. I hope I covered it all. We also told them that if they foster, we want to come and visit the Airedale.Always,
Keith and Sue Havens

After reviewing your application and your preferences, we have come to the unfortunate conclusion that an Airedale that would not be a good fit for you.
As you are most likely aware, Airedales and most dogs for that matter, come into rescue because of troublesome issues. These issues are exacerbated through the surrender and re-homing/adoption process. We see a regression in training/learning, an escalation in aggression issues if present and acting out just to name a few. We rarely have a perfect AiredaleâŚsomething weâd all like!!
Stability and consistency are just a couple of ingredients in a successful rescue recipe. Our goal at ARG is to find the best, most nurturing and permanent home for our Airedales.
We wish you well in your search for an addition to your family. We are just unable to help at this time.
Sincerely,
Kelly Imbody, ARGFebruary 13, 2023 at 10:36 pm in reply to: 2023 Kelly Wood, Salisbury NC, Good Fence, ADT Exp, No pets, 2 child (12, 21 yrs)_ARG Declined #30214This applicant has no business getting a dog. Her story contradicts itself. I couldn’t keep up. She is moving in with elderly, ill parents to care for them, quit her job supposedly, but in the next breath tells me she works just down the street. I had to constantly redirect the conversation. She is/has also looked at labs, pits, and Shar Peis. She recently supposedly rescued a pit, but didn’t bother to vet the dog because “it was old.” She is not an appropriate applicant.

Thank you for being willing to do this. As you know, ARG depends on our network of volunteers and Airedale lovers in general to place our surrendered âdales. Please find attached the folks youâll be visiting application, my phone interview notes and the home visit evaluation form.
Please use the HV eval as a guide, as some items may/may not apply. The $64,000 question you want to be able to answer with an emphatic yes isâŚwould you feel comfortable leaving your Airedale with these folks?
Sometimes the answer is âyes, butâŚâ; sometimes itâs a ânoâ. We want to be able to place our âdales in the perfect home. We donât want to go back in and âre-placeâ them. Theyâve already been through so much.I will introduce you to these folks via a shared email. It then will be up to you to reach out to them and schedule a time for the HV. Once youâve completed the HV you can jot your findings/thoughts down(preferably in WordâŚit works better on our internal site/page) and email them to me or if itâs easier you can call me and we can chat about your visit.
If youâve any questions/concerns, please donât hesitate to contact me. Again, we thank you in advance for your help!!!
I anxiously await hearing how it goes!!!Warmest regards,

Phone Interview: Bob & Karen Nichols
1/9/2023Bob and Karen Nichols live in Grimsley, TN which is about ½ way between Knoxville and Nashville. Bob describes their neighborhood as a rural sub-division, with each home having at least 3+ acres of property. He describes it as very quiet. They have been in Grimsley since 2019 having lived in TX, SC, NC and FL in the past.
They currently have an elderly Chihuahua mix (12 yrs. old) and 3 catsâŚ2 outside cats and 1 inside cats. They are ADT experienced having had 3 Airedales in the past. Their 1st they got as a puppy from a breeder, the 2nd they rescued and the 3rd they âfoundâ and described her as a matted mess. They eventually found a home for her in WY(!). Theyâve also rescued a Welshie in the past.
They are not fenced and have always leash walked their dogs.
Bob works from home with no chance of returning to a brick and mortar office. He states that he could have retired, but it was too easy to keep working and the flexibility was too good to pass up. Karen is a school administrator and works just a few minutes from home. They have children in the areaâŚ2-5 hours away and their 3 children all have dogs. He states that they do see their kids with dogs in tow so a rescue would need to get along with other dogs as well as cats being that they have 3.
They have a good understanding of whatâs involved in rescue and are interested not only in adopting if the right âdale comes along, but are very interested in fostering, transporting and helping with home visits. He said that they really didnât enter into to this looking for a âpermanentâ dogâŚthey just want to help as he knows that it is a volunteer organization and that there is usually just a handful of people doing a lot of work. (really???!!!!) Should the right âdale come along their preference would be a Senior âdale, no sex preference.
VET:
Vet tech said that the Nichols are great folks. All of their animals are neutered, up to date on vaccinations. They have been clients for over 2 years. No red flags on client record.
PERSONAL REFERENCE:
Personal reference has known the Nichols for about 6 years. She said that they help each other out with their animals when needed. âIf I was a dog, Iâd want to live with them.â Reference describes the Nichols as caring, thoughtful. Personal reference has 2 cats and 1 dog.-

I would like the three of you to coordinate a time for the home visit, preferably on the weekend since our nights are so short right now and get dark too soon. Caryn is an ARG adopter. Caryn will come to your house and meet all of you – Marty, Joel and Aunt Moe! It is always nice for Airedale families to meet and its good to have Cary Airedale locals! I hope that you all can figure out a time in the next couple of weekends to have the home visit, the last step in the ARG adoption process.Thank you all!

Phone Interview: Marty Goldstein
12/28/2022These folks are gonna be great! I spoke with Marty at length. Hereâs the skinny:
Backyard is fully fenced with 3 gates. Fencing is privacy fencing. Crate is generally on main floor with another crate in their bedroom. Intends to crate train until dog has proven himself/herself worthy of being left alone to roam the house.
Aunt Moe is very active 75 y/o so her physical status is not an issue.
Both Marty and Joel work from home. Aunt Moe is home all of the time, so dog would rarely be alone.
Intends to get pet insurance again. Is fully aware of all costs involved re: care of âdale.
They adopted Buddy from SOAR in 2018 and shortly thereafter developed what they thought were skin/food allergies and treated him for same under the direction of their vet. After almost 3 years of treatment protocols and vet referrals he was dxâd. with a rare lymphoma. 5 sites were bxâd. and all 5 came back positive for T cell lymphoma. Referral was made to oncologist but vet told them what to expect. They opted for palliative care and ultimately put Buddy down 12/9/2022.
They have lived at this address since 2010 having moved to NC from Flint, MC.
They do a lot of walking/hiking.
Adoptive dog MUST get along with other dogs as family has dogs that come visit frequently and sometimes stay for a couple of days. THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.
Does not have a sex preference but admits sheâs always had males. No age restriction though Marty admits she doesnât think sheâs emotionally ready for a super Senior âdale.
Marty is very aware of needs of rescueâŚtime to decompress and become familiar with routine and realize this is their home.VET: rave reviews. âWonderful people, they did everything in their power for Buddy. He was a great dog.â Up to date on all vaccinations. Bravecto for flea/tick prevention. Heart Gard for heartworm. Absolutely no reservations regarding these folks.
Did not call personal reference as phone no. was cut off on application and didnât feel it was necessary after phone interview and vet reference.December 25, 2022 at 10:01 am in reply to: 2022 Rebecca Berlin, Charlotte NC, no yard, apartment, no pets, 2-4 hrs alone #30061Airedale Rescue Group
HOME VISIT done by Keith Lehr
12/17/2022Keith and his âdale Bart visited Rebecca at her apartment and he was very positive after his visit.
Rebecca does live on the 5th floor so Keith felt that she would do best with a middle aged dogâŚone that didnât require frequent âoutingsâ during housebreaking and also not an older dog that may have orthopedic problems. There is an elevator that she can use and he also felt that the adoptive dog would need to get along well with other dogs in light of the fact that they may need to ride the elevator (confined space) for a short while.
Rebecca began working from home on December 19th so the dog being alone for a long time isnât an issue.
Her neighborhood is very walkable. The complex has a gated dog run that is fenced. He did state that it is loud as it is next to a major highway. He saw her apartment and she is currently dog-sitting and Airedale of a friend. Keith stated that Rebecca is a âlovely person.â
She understands the financial commitment and otherwise. He relates that she is recently single. Her ex didnât like dogs.
I think sheâs made a good choice!!! 😉
Keith gives her a thumbs up with the caveat as noted in the 2nd paragraph above.December 25, 2022 at 9:48 am in reply to: 2022 Rebecca Berlin, Charlotte NC, no yard, apartment, no pets, 2-4 hrs alone #30060Airedale Rescue Group
Phone Interview: Rebecca Berlin
December 4, 2022Rebecca is a young professional. She lives alone and is currently renting an apartment.
She anticipates that she will begin working exclusively from home on December 19, 2022. She didnât feel that adopting a dog and then being gone at work all day would be the responsible thing to do, but now that her work situation is changing she is ready.
She does have an application in at NW Mecklenberg Animal Recue. She is interested in a terrier/terrier mix is she goes that route, but is very interested in Airedales. She has a friend that has an Airedale and she dog sits for them frequentlyâŚthe Airedale was staying with her when I made this phone call.
Rebecca lives in an upstairs apartment and for this reason doesnât feel that a Senior dog that may have orthopedic issues would be appropriate and also doesnât want a puppy because of the difficulty of getting outside quickly while housebreaking.
She doesnât have an age (per se) preference and has no sex preference.
There is a dog park nearby.
Her lease has breed restrictions of: Pitbulls, Chow Chow, American Staffordshire, Rottweiler, Akita, Malamute, Cane Corso.
Rebecca has family nearbyâŚher Mother is close and her Father about an hour away. She related that her Mother would not be an option to take care of a dog due to physical issues. She does have friends that would possibly watch a dog, she would consider a reputable in-home pet sitting service as well. Rebecca herself had done per sitting in the past, âwhen I was working multiple jobs.â
Rebecca grew up with a Gordon Setter. She currently has no pets. She is interested in fostering (though she has never fostered) and/or adopting.Personal ref:
Judy: has know applicant since HS. States she has been encouraging Rebecca to get a dog. Judy lives in Memphis, TN and saw Rebecca about 2-3 mos. ago. Judy relates that Rebecca loves dogs. âShe gets so excited whenever she sees oneâŚshe wants to meet it.â âShe would be a good dog owner. Itâs crazy that she doesnât have a dog yet.â Judy can offer no reason why Rebecca shouldnât be approved.Personal ref:
Lee Ann: has known applicant since 2008. Has not known her to have a dog. Reference has 2 dogs which she adopted from shelterâŚlab mix & German Shepard mix. Lee Ann lives in Charlotte, but not in same neighborhood. Has not been to dog park that applicant speaks of. Reference states that Rebecca âwould be one of the best pet owners.âNovember 27, 2022 at 12:06 pm in reply to: 2022 Candace Keels & adult son, Irmo, SC, 5-yo ADT + TerrierX, 0 hr alone #29965Airedale Rescue Group
Phone Interview: Candace Keels
November 7, 2022
Candace lives in a neighborhood of 25-30 homes on a cul-de-sac. She has a privacy fence around the back yard. You are unable to see between the slats and fencing goes all the way to the ground. Her adult son lives with her and works from home. Candace is retired.
She is not considering any other breeds at the time and currently has a female Airedale age 5 and a female Terrier mix, age 10. She found her Airedale on Craigâs List and was about 2 years old when she rescued her. Candace relates that this Airedale had absolutely not social skills when she was rescued. The Terrier mix, she adopted from the local dog/animal shelter. She has had several breeds in the past, but states that she had an Airedale as a child and has always liked the breed. Her âdale gets along well with her Terrier mix.
Vet: Cient visits annually. Both dogs are spayed. Tech stated âI love her. The dogs are well-behaved, she is a great.â Client and keeps both dogs up to date regarding vaccinations. There were no red flags on client chart.
Personal reference: Has known client for 45 years. Relates that Candace has no grandchildren so her dogs are her grandchildren. Relates that they sleep with client, she constantly talks to them. Regarding the Airedale when initially brought into the home she was scared. Now is friendly and loving. Relates that the Terrier mix runs around a lot. âSheâll baby, love and be good to the dog. Her son loves animals as much as she does.

Just talked to Sarah Hemmings. Told her youâd emailed her early last week. âitâs my busiest week at workâ she said. She didnât see your email. Asked if sheâd checked her spamâŚâohâŚlet me check thatâ⌠nothing.
She said she would respond to the thread that I sent introducing you both. I told her OK, that the ball is in her court.
I am dealing with another applicant that doesnât return texts/emails/calls either! Itâs maddening. You (our volunteers out in the field) are kind enough to do this for us and for them but they donât follow through with their end of the bargain. If you donât hear from her, itâs not your committee, as she said she was going to f/u. I truly thank youâŚhopefully youâll connect, but if not, it is her loss. (Iâm becoming very jaded). Drop me a quick text if you would if you do both end up scheduling a home visit. Thanks again for your perseverance.
Warmly,
