Good morning, Amy. It’s great to hear from you, but I’m sorry that Biscuit has started barking so much. I’ve copied Pat Hairston above because she is very knowledgeable on dog behavior and training and she may want to add to this.

The most likely explanation for Biscuit’s barking is that she wants ATTENTION NOW (that was in dog bark), but she has to learn that that’s not the way to get it. And you’re probably right that she’s missing playing with Sorley and that must frustrate her. (Hope he heals quickly.) The day care is a good solution to expend that energy she’s building up. Of course, on the days she doesn’t go, she still needs lots of exercise 30-45 minutes a couple of times a day. But when you and your husband are working and can’t play with her or entertain her, she needs something to stimulate her interest. Do you have a Kong for her? Stuff it with pumpkin or kibble mixed in pumpkin and freeze it, and give it to her to work on. It will keep her busy for a while. There are also lots of good interactive toys for them: puzzles where you hide treats and they have to figure out how to get the treat. It engages their mind.

Have you taught her “leave it”? It is an excellent term to teach your dog that will come to mean “whatever you’re doing now, stop.” It is easy to teach and if you use it consistently, she will learn quickly. Teaching her “wait” also will help.

I found a good article on Whole Dog Journal on stopping dog barking and I’ve directed that to be sent to you from them, so look for that email. Also, found this article on Rover.com and it looks pretty good:
      https://www.rover.com/blog/surefire-ways-to-stop-dog-barking/

Your giving her treats when she’s quiet is very good if she can associate that behavior with the treat. Clicker training is a good way to do that. You “mark” her good behavior immediately with a click, then a treat. You can use that with the “leave it” as well. When she “leaves it,” you immediately click and treat. You can find videos and articles on clicker training online.

And, of course, the training class will be great. Airedales love training because they love being praised for being good!

Good luck to you and let us know how she’s progressing.

Best to you and your family for the holidays and Happy New Year!

      Hi Jackie,

Hope you are doing well and enjoying the holiday season. We’re having an issue with Biscuit and I’d like some advice.

It seems now what she is settled in here, she’s started to do quite a bit of nuisance barking. As soon as we take her outside on a walk, almost every time she will start barking a lot and it can go on for some time. She is also barking during the day when we are working and it happens a lot when we are on business calls. We’ve been trying to take the ignore route, but that gets difficult when we need quiet to work or talk to a client.

I’ve also been trying to give her treats when she is quiet for a few seconds, but I don’t feel like I’m making much progress.

I think it’s been made worse this past few weeks since our older Airedale, Sorley, injured his knee. We’ve had to keep the two of them separated most of the time since Biscuit is a rude adolescent and gets a little rough. With his leg hurting him he isn’t up for much play right now. I’ve been taking her to doggie daycare a couple of days a week so she can work out some energy.

We plan on enrolling her in training class at the end of January, but right now that seems like a long way away! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Amy

                            Hi Jackie,
I wish I could help in person but I moved to AZ in August. My current ability to contribute to ARG is more in the lines of phone consultations and emails. I could possibly do some behavior assessments by facetime but where I believe I provide the most value is in helping the new owners during the early phase of transitioning the dogs into their new homes so they can understand what the dog needs in order to succeed in their new environment.
Good luck with this boy. Please keep me posted.
                            All the best,
                            Corinna

Size of Home {I got the pictures/information from Zillow, not while I was there!} Size: 3 beds 3 baths; 1,991 sq ft
Setting: Suburban; Neighborhood street frontage; City environment Condition of Home: Well-kept
                              Describe the home interior:
Taylor’s home is very warm and comfortable. The furniture is very nice and super cute, but also very liveable and dog friendly. Combination of hardwood, tile, and carpet. The kitchen/living room/dining room are open. Airedale would have plenty of room to wander around, test out all the floors to make sure they are “nap-worthy”, and plenty of room to run around and play tug-of-war and fetch. There are three water bowls… I mean toilets. 😊

Front Entrance/Foyer: Airedale Area. Discussed adding doggy gates here to contained area. I added a few graphics to help you “see” what I mean. 😊

                              Accommodations:
The dog will be left inside the home. She is open to using crate or whatever is best for the dog. We talked about using the foyer area, which is all tile, as the dog area (see above). I can be sectioned off with baby gates to give the Airedale a devoted, smaller, secure area and to help There are plenty of spaces for a dog bed and the kitchen has ample area for an Airedale water/eating area. Taylor will coordinate with her sister to ensure the dog is cared for each day and anytime Taylor is out of town or has to travel for work.
The backyard is really large and completely fenced in with very tall wooden fence (like 8ft) that goes to the ground. It connects to other fenced-in yards on 3 sides. If the dog did escape, it would find itself in another fenced area, not the street. There is easy access from the back door, which goes directly to the back yard. So, there is no chance of a dog running to the front yard or street. She knew the importance of always keeping an eye on an airedale, even in a fenced-in yard.
Taylor seemed to understand and will do what’s needed to adopt an ARG dog- extra love, time, support, and encouragement to be the best dog they can be and to feel safe and comfortable in their new home.
                              Children: N/A Family Environment:
Taylor’s sister lives with her and will a partner and doggy aunt. She is a teacher and will be helping Taylor care for the dog. The sister is excited about having a dog in the home and being part of its life. They were already talking about taking the dog for walks in the neighborhood and doing lots of other fun things. There is a 3rd roommate, but she lives with her fiancé and will be moving out in February.

Life-Style Compromises: Taylor has considered the responsibilities involved in owning a dog and is willing to do whatever is needed to provide a safe, loving home, including doggy classes, training, behavior support, etc…

Other Pets: 3rd Roommate, who lives with her fiancé, has an Australian Shepard who is there occasionally. I shared the importance of helping the Airedale adjust to another dog in the home and socialization.

Owner Interaction With Other Pets: N/A

Important Question to Answer: Ask the applicant what they would do or react to the new dog having an accident.
Taylor said that she understands it will take time and it may not be easy at first, but she is willing to do whatever is best to make sure the dog is safe, secure, comfortable, loved, and supported.

                              Additional Information:
                              • Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog in this home?
No. I would have trusted her to care for Janie.
                              • Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant? Yes! absolutely.
                              Conclusion: Approve Applicant
Although she will be a first-time dog/Airedale owner, I feel like Taylor will be a great doggy parent. She is excited, has been doing research, is willing to learn and explore options, and wants to have a dog as part of her everyday life. I feel like she will provide a loving, safe, supportive, and secure environment and home for any airedale.

                                12/18/18: JMC to Dr. Murray:
Good morning, Dr. Murray. We have an Airedale in Atlanta that we placed with a couple on October 30. This dog came to us from a vet clinic in Atlanta where he had been surrendered by his family because he was facing surgery for eating a foreign object (leather glove) and they could not afford the surgery, having had surgery done on him months before for the same thing. He was reported to be a hyper dog who was good with other dogs and children. He’s 2 years old and small – about 50 lbs.

We placed him with Jena and Bob Salmon, who have had Airedales in the past and currently have a mixed-breed dog and a cat. Since he has been with the couple, they have reported that he wants to “go after” other dogs when on walks and is very excitable in the house, barking at everything he sees through the windows. Jena told me she had downloaded a video online by “Doggy Dan,” an Australian dog trainer. I recommended that she take him to a training class herself and then connected her with a trainer in the area, Catherine Abramson, but Jena never responded to Catherine’s calls.

Today, Jena sent a message that we must take Hinkley back because he has “gone after” 2-3 other dogs and yesterday “went after” a small boy while they were on their walk. She apparently has had him with a trainer – we’re trying to find out the details on that – but she wants him gone.

You have offered in the past boarding/training at The Pet Lodge. Would you be able to take this Airedale into that facility and work with him or have the trainer at Pet Lodge work with him? I realize that this is the week before Christmas and many vets’ offices and kennels will be booked solid. Any help you can offer will be so appreciated.

Retroactively 03/15/18 or so: Bridge and Clay adopted Annie from a vet’s office in Robertsdale, AL, who contacted me about an Airedale mix. I put her on Airedale Mixes and after 6 weeks or so, no one had come forward for her, so I told Bridge.
04/28/18: They love Annie. She’s great with their little dog, Roxi, some kind of mix.
