      Subject: Re: Airedale Rescue

So nice talking with you Jackie.
I agree entirely, Finn needs to get settled into his new surroundings, and Hinkley needs more time to learn how to potentially live in a pack that has another member with four legs.

It is possible that their respective energies would fit with proper manners from each.
Finn’s sock obsession and Hinkley’s swallowing obsession might not be a match. We have friends in Arkansas that had a large dog who would eat anything he could get his mouth on; he did not survive the last surgery.

However, Hinkley being on the go, always busy should be a fit with the amount of daily activity we incorporate. If you have a well exercised Airedale you have a better opportunity to have a well behaved Airedale; not a given but better odds.

Thank you for the Facebook link and the tip on the CBD oil.

I’ll look forward to sharing updates in a couple of weeks.

      Best.

Thank you, Tracey. It was great talking to you and hearing about Finn and your previous Airedales. We agree that with all you have going on, having just moved yesterday, and Finn being unsure of his surroundings and the hardwood floors, that it would be best to give you all a little time to settle in before bringing in another Airedale.

And, that gives Hinkley more time to learn to be sociable with other dogs. We’re working on it.

In a couple of weeks, I’ll get back in touch and see if the timing is right for a home visit and we’ll ask a volunteer who lives nearby to arrange your home visit.

In the meantime, let me know if you have questions or comments.

Thank you for having the heart and home for a rescued Airedale.

Good morning, Tracey. What a lovely message to read this Sunday morning. We love hearing from people who have known and loved Airedales and never want to stop. It sounds like your home would be perfect for another Airedale.

We would be happy to consider you for Hinkley, but first, you must submit an application, have a telephone interview with one of our volunteers, then have a home visit by another volunteer. Once we’re all satisfied that yours would be the right place for another Airedale, we’ll consider you for an Airedale who would fit in. That may be Hinkley. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Follow this link to our application http://intranet.airedalerescuegroup.com/adoption-application/
and we will contact you after we receive it. And Thank you again for writing.

        Hi,

My name is Tracey. In 4th grade I wanted Benji and my father, who was raised with Schnauzers and always wanted an Airedale, added an Airedale to our family. We still laugh about all the Airedale antics that came with Tudor. Since then, all I have ever lived with are Airedales.

My husband and I live in Chattanooga. We have an only child, a 5 1/2 year old very laid back Airedale named Finn. We are moving into our new home at the end of the week. It has a small yard, and have been thinking about a sibling. Finn is super friendly and loves other dogs, big and little.

I’m fortunate to be able to work from home. About once a week, once every two weeks travel to Atlanta for business. Finn is used to lots of attention and exercise. He likes to “go see”, we all walk 4-6 miles a day at an energetic pace. He things he is Mayor of the blue walking bridge in Chatt. His favorite toy is his hedge hog; however he really looks forward to his monthly knuckle bone.

He lived with other dog; formerly another Airedale, female, and for a few months they both lived with a Bichon-Maltese mix, Harris, who found us. We looked for Harris’s family and found them; however they did not want him because he kept running away. Harris happily resides with my sister’s family in MN.

We’ve been talking about a sibling for Finn; however we are not interested in a puppy, too large an age difference. We would love to speak with you about Hinkley.

01/30/19: Really nice man on the phone. But didn’t have time to finish our interview because he was working on something for work. His Bella, the 84-lb boxer-pit-mix, sounds amazing. No other dogs have ever been in the house with them! He’s had her 9-1/2 years. They go visit his niece and she has a dog and the two of them run and play together. Bella is devoted to him and they are together almost all the time. I asked how she would react to another dog wanting attention from him and he is concerned about that as well. He is going to try to get a friend to bring a dog over and see how she reacts. That won’t necessarily be the best test. At the dog park, she is fine with other dogs, but grabbed a smaller dog after it kept chasing and nipping at her. She kept trying to get away from it, but it wouldn’t stop. She finally turned around and grabbed it by the neck and shook it and it limped away. The owner took responsibility and said he probably shouldn’t have let his dog keep chasing her. So Robert doesn’t go to the dog park except early in the morning when no one is around. They walk into the woods on a long 20-ft leash because Bella likes to get away from him to go potty alone.

I found this statement on his application to be just perfect for an Airedale: I like the light you see in their eyes when they understand what you want, although they may often decide they have other ideas.

He told the trainer he was going to get an Airedale maybe and she said please don’t bring it to me. He went to this trainer for obedience and advanced obedience, but didn’t do CGC. Bella is very attached and won’t let him walk away from her and out of the room (as required for CGC).

She doesn’t like other dogs barking around her. She will put her paw on a small dog if it keeps barking at her.

Star Mark dog collars. Plastic tips on inside -like a prong collar but not metal – stopped pulling. Hates cats.

Wants to have a friend over to bring a dog over to see how that dog and Bella would do.

We had to cut short the interview so he is to call me back. I have lots of other questions to clarify on his application. He says he probably is not looking to adopt soon, but is thinking about the future. Bella is 11 and part Boxer, who have lots of cancer, and she’s 84 lbs. I told him let’s get him approved and then when he’s ready and we have an Airedale, there will not be a delay.

              01/28/19 from Cindy Green:
              Hi Jackie,
The big George Webster has been with me for just over a week. I usually give a foster dog about 2 weeks to settle in and get with the program.
This big guy is definitely a hard driving, go-go dog. He is the dream dog for someone that is interested in dog sports and otherwise a handful for most people.
His biggest challenge is impulse control so really taking to slow. This weeks lesson has been 1. teaching him he gets no affection or touch until he sits and relaxes and 2. He cannot pass through a door way or be released from crate or run until he sits and relaxes. He really struggles to get it together especially early in the day when he is full of energy but is a quick attentive study. When he finally “earns” is ear message he practically purrs.

He is a bull in a china cabinet in the house to date so we spend a lot of time outside where he seems happiest. We just started place work today so that should help him in the house. He sleeps in his crate at night but like most high drive dogs he does not sleep a long night. He wakes ~ 4:30 -5:00 am and will softly whine until Bruce or I get up. The more exercise he gets the better he is about sleeping the night. Will work more on the whining in time as he gets more adjusted to a routine.

He loves to go for a walk, play ball and is very good with some verbal obedience including recall. He has tremendous focus, is bold, not bothered by any noise or anything around and is perpetual “happy boy”.
However he goes into high excitement at the site of new people and dogs. This will take a lot of time and patience to work through but from working with him to date I feel it is pure lack of impulse control – no aggression at all.
He is fine with my dogs but I supervise interactions with him on loose leash as he is a rough “paws on” player. If one a my dogs gives him a “snarly no” over his roughness he quickly drops and play bows just wanting to engage. He has just never learned to interact with people or dogs in any other way but excited, forward movement. Couple that with his high energy and he is a handful for most people.

George W. is a really great dog! He will need someone pretty committed to working him physically and mentally to bring out his best. And his best a very good stuff.

01/28/19: Called Rainsville Animal Clinic. They never saw the Airedale Addie. They had seen Bella, Ms Daisy, and Winnie. Bella was last seen in 2015. The others prior to that, but they think both of them died. They never saw the Kendall’s Airedale, Addie, who they had for 2-1/2 to 3 years.

I’ll ask them if there was another vet they saw. But I don’t think so.

01/29/19: Barbara Kisslinger, the groomer who adopted Addie, called me and said that Jeni & Brian are great people and she would recommend that they get another Airedale. She and her husband kept Addie every time that Barbara had to go out of town and then when things got really bad and Barbara had to be gone so much, they adopted her. Her husband had really bonded with Addie, while their other dogs were more bonded to Barbara. She says they will take good care of a dog.

01/30/19: I emailed Jeni and asked if there was another vet who saw Addie during the 3 years they had her.

Back-dated to 01/12/19: Conversation with Jeni:
Had Airedale till May of last year. Her mother had gotten very sick and was in and out of hospital. Rehab facility 1 hr away. Leave work, go home, let dog out, and then drive 1 hour. Had her 2-1/2 to 3 years. They got her from someone else. Individual that she worked with and they couldn’t keep her and they took her. Probably 1 year old. Very well trained by other people. Mother passed away in Aug and lost her dad in Feb. Lost both parents within 6 months of each other.

What is the height of your fencing? Buried Wire How long have you had it? Does it completely surround your house/yard? It is not installed yet. They have the underground fence. Neighbor to left has 10-15 acres and has cattle. His side is fenced.

We had an Airedale in past and loved her personality. (Both of my parents became ill last year and my mother passed away in August and my dad in February.) Long story short , I allowed our groomer to adopt her, due us being away from home so much. Tell me about this. How old was she? Where did you get her?

dog food do you feed? What did you feed your prev dale. She got broccoli and chicken together – She would only eat when she was hungry. Food was in a green bag. She had ear infection originally. They did not do any other training with her. She was amazing. The only thing she ever bothered in their house was chap stick. Do they have dog training. Met a girl who takes in rescues – strays – and she does training. Met her 2 weeks ago. She uses clicks and treats training.

She sent me the phone number for the groomer, Barbara Kisslinger, who adopted their Airedale.
01/28/19 JMC called and left message for Barbara to return call.

Thanks for the update! My honest thoughts are that Chief would likely be happier in a condo with someone home most of the time than in a back yard with a family that is gone more often than not. He loves to run and play and chase squirrels lol but he also loves to be inside with his person. I agree that he will likely bond with a woman over a man if he has a choice! I feel like the home with the older Airedale and the wheaten could be a good fit if the wheaten is submissive but I do agree that it could be a problem if the wheaten wants to be in charge. Chief loves to play with other dogs but wants to be the boss! I still believe its the best decision for him to find him a new home as things here have not changed but we are not in a rush to do so and want to make sure his new home is well suited for him.

If I can answer any other questions or help in any way please let me know!
                      Thank you

Hi, Lindsey. We are still trying to find the right home. The biggest push-back we’ve gotten is that people are wary of his habit of nipping at people. But we have someone newly approved that I’m thinking about. A divorced dad with a son 10 and one 17. Regular suburban back yard, no other pets currently. I would only do it if they can commit to taking some time off work to acclimate him to their home because they’re gone 6-8 hrs a day. Another recently approved applicant has a 12-1/2 yo female Airedale and a 3-y-o male Wheaten. Our concern is that Chief wouldn’t like the male Wheaten – though the Wheaten loves other dogs. Any conflict would be difficult on the older Airedale. (Both of these homes would be a transport of 7+ hours )

My thought is that Chief would probably do better with a woman since he is closest to you. We have two who are good applicants and approved, but both are in condos. Now, we know that many people have dogs in condos and they do great. They must be committed walkers, hikers, park-goers, etc. And both of these applicants (1 is a single woman; the other is 2 sisters) active, committed leash-walkers. One is home more than she’s gone and her parents have recently adopted a 10-year-old Airedale-mix from us.

So, between our core members, we are discussing the pros and cons of folks. Do you have any questions about any of these? What do you think?

His death was accidental. He was rushed to the hospital during the storm, she was stuck at work, because he had a bleeding ulcer. He came home and was only home for 4 days and they had a few shingles off on the roof. He insisted on repairing them himself with her protesting that he shouldn’t climb up there. He fell off the roof and died.
