Subject: Rescue Info for Ben’s Curly

She was born 3/5/11 and had her last litter 3/16/18. She’s leash trained. She gets along with everybody, but won’t tolerate inappropriate touching from puppies for very long without flopping them.

I forgot to mention that my one year old had made a puppy cry several times and chase them, but she’s gotten a lot better over the last several weeks to the point where I can trust her with them.

Curly’s coat is not as thick as the others. Vitamins have helped.

      Regards,
      Ben

She was born 2/27/18 to my mommy Casey who recently retired to NYC. She’s been skittish for most of her life. She’s still skittish/submissive around everybody except me and her pack. You won’t see a lot of ear perk or tail wagging until she learns to trust you. She is not leash trained, but she’ll follow along and comes when called most of the time. Treats help. I use sliced up hot dogs or bread. She responds to Puppy. She has an ping pong ball sized edema on her right front elbow. Dr. Fung drained it when she spayed her 12/26 (Rabies shot too). She recommended a softer bed and protecting it with a piece of pool noodle held on with a ace bandage or similar. She believed that it would resolve itself in 3 weeks or so. I tried that treatment, but it was too much of an attraction for her pack mates to ignore. It’s gotten a little smaller. It doesn’t seem to cause her any lameness or discomfort.

3 boys born 10/31 to Jazzy, 2 boys born 11/3 to Stout Lee and 2 boys born 11/16 to Little Girl equals 7 boys total. 1 girl born to Stout Lee and 2 girls born to Little Girl equals 3 girls total
If you’ve a way to tell puppies apart from each other, then bring it ‘cause I’m running short on collars. I know them though by now and/or have collars on the one’s that I don’t know by sight. I’ll have them sorted and crated for you.

All puppies are off the porch running with the pack except Mr. Blue (Little Girl’s) and Ms. Purple (Stout Lee). Ms. Purple is clearly the biggest girl, and just as clearly the most timid. She’s grown weary of fighting the puppy wars and submits to the others. 2-3 of the bigger boys protect their self given right to eat first. All of them play together. They’ll play rough, but I’ve never had to intervene with more than a sharp verbal rebuke to leave the dog alone or let that dog up.

They all sleep with each other without me having to keep anybody apart or together. I put them in their kennels by whatever order they choose and/or I pick them up. 1-3 to a kennel depending on puppy/kennel size. Giving them enough room so that they can lay down without touching each other cuts way down on the growling. I don’t tolerate growling. Everybody runs out the door eagerly. Most will run back in too, but not everybody. None of them run away. They’ll all come running with a whistle or at meal time

I think that one of Jazzy’s boys may have a Grizzle & Tan coat. Everybody else is Black & Tan.

      Regards,
      Ben

              03/14/19 from Ben:
You are most welcome, Barbara. I knew as soon as Jackie called your name that I’d picked the right folks. When I asked, she responded that your husband’s name is Don. I don’t have a clear memory of your visit here, but I remembered that was right! I remember that you told me you’d rescued Airedales for a long time. I don’t remember you disclosing your involvement with ARG.

You gave one of my older puppies a great new home, and you were OK with taking that Airedale without leash training rather than wait a week for me to train that dog up for you. Right? I could be misremembering.

It’s been a bit wet here of late. The wet area in our lane is about 45’ short of our concrete circle drive. My big Dodge Cargo van can rumble through OK without getting stuck anymore. I keep it moving. It’s bumpy though. Worse case, wear something mud/waterproof. Almost all of my Airedales will come to me no matter where you park. More about my Airedales soonest.

              Regards,
              Ben

I forgot to type that 10-11’ish works well for me, but I ain’t the one driving! Please pick a time that’s convenient for you. I can make any time during the day work. I like sending my Airedales to their new homes on an empty stomach. Worse case, they’ll miss breakfast or dinner. They won’t starve between leaving here and getting there. They eat 2X a day. Sun up and sun down’ish

You are most welcome, Barbara. Our address is 128 Old Market Road, Fountain, NC 27829. Our home sits about 1/4 mile off of the roadway. It can’t be seen from the roadway. All that you’ll see is our mailbox and our entry to our lane behind a couple of driveway gates. Here’s a link to a video that I uploaded a few years ago to help folks find us. Nothing has changed except those pine trees have grown up some.

Mr. Google knows where we are, but I heard that celly reception gets spotty around here. If you’re using celly GPS, then write those last couple of turns down. I’ll be sitting by the phone on the couch in case you get lost. You’ll have to sit at the front gate for a few minutes until I can get there. I don’t have reception down there.

                    03/14/19:

                    Hey Jackie and Barbara,

I thought that I’d start with my daddy Duke. He’s the big dog around here. He was born 1/23/14. His next 3 year Rabies shot is due 3/21/20. Occasionally (2X a year or less), he’ll get a silver dollar size hot spot on his right flank, but nothing that survives a medicated shampoo or two. He lets me know when he needs my help by licking it incessantly. Dig/chew outside? That’s one of his favorite pastimes. Chew inside? Well, he seems drawn to our wooden window sills and shades when I leave him free run inside our home for more than a few hours. All of that general info that I sent you applies. He’s a bigger Airedale He’s at 85 pounds right now by my scale. He’s got at least 5-10 pounds of fat him. He’s gets all that he wants and then some. He’s a beast!

Going back to general info on my Airedales now that I think about it. I’ve never had any of my Airedales hips/elbows or similar genetically tested. I was confident in my ability to pick an Airedale @ 8 week old if I could see them and their parents run. None of my adults are lame. Do I see a cross gaited puppy? No, but it’s still early. I watch them run every day. I did respond to an AKC requirement a couple of years ago or so to get Duke’s DNA tested. He passed, lol! He’s all Airedale. I’ve got that paperwork that I’ll give to you. .

                    Regards,
                    Ben

Subject: Rescue Info for Ben’s Airedales

                      Hey Jackie and Barbara,

I’m going to break this up into a few emails. It’s easier for me. Starting out, I’m sending general info that applies to mostly everybody.

They all learn to be calm, obedient and submissive to me. Putting their paws/mouth on me is never allowed. It’ll always get a rebuke and/or I’ll make them flop. They all chew/dig. As they get older, they learn not to chew stuff in our home. I still wouldn’t trust them around my heirlooms.

They all had puppy vaccinations at 6 (5 way), 9, 12, & 16 (9-way) weeks old. Except for my year-old puppy, they all had another 9 way shot on 4/14/18. I don’t vaccinate for Bordetella or Lyme Disease. I deworm at 2. 4. 6. 8 and 12 weeks old and 2X a year for my adults. Last deworming for my adults was 2/23-2/25/ If you’re willing, then I’ll gladly donate my medicine stockpile of Safeguard Dewormer, Pyantel Pamote(sp?), Omega 3 vitamins, vaccination shots, K9 and what not. None of them are on any heartworm medicine. I beat the bugs off of them with a big stick sort of thing. If anybody gets diagnosed with heartworms, then they’ll be my first. Everybody will get a fresh dose of K9 Advantix 2 for the bugs today/tomorrow. Spring has sprung! Last dose was around XMAS last year. I’m not aware of any allergies that they might have.

We don’t play in the house. We go to “Bed” in the house. They are all crate trained (Bed!). I teach all of them it’s one way in, one way out. I use the Petmate Sky Kennels. They learn not to jump over the side or bust out. I don’t need to secure top to bottom with the nuts/bolts. I prefer something that I can quickly take the top off to get to an Airedale without having to crawl in. Hate them metal contraptions with trays! Puppies stay in the their kennels overnight. Everybody else sleeps around my bed with me. They’ll get into the bed if I need some extra loving, but they don’t presume to jump into bed with me otherwise. Except Duke sometimes, but he’ll get out if I tell him.

Puppies and the year old aren’t leash trained. The others are. Stout Lee and Jazzy might tug a bit to start, but they’ll quickly settle into the heel position. I have AKC paperwork on all of them, but I’d rather not pass that on to you. They are all used to living with just me and my family. We don’t get many visitors, and we don’t go out in public much. If we do, then they wait for me in the van to return. As soon as I get out, Duke will slide into the driver’s seat and Curly into the front passenger seat, lol! The puppies ride fine in a crate. The adults will do the same but they prefer to stand and look out at the world.

Nobody has ever seen a cat. I would make them earn my trust around cats/chickens/snakes/squirrels or similar before I left them alone together. Smaller dogs? I’ve had nothing but positive feedback, but I still wouldn’t trust them until they earned my trust. Kids? I’ve never heard/read about any of my Airedales hurting a human.

They’re inside/outside dogs. I don’t have a door that they can open themselves. They can all hold their potty all night (9 hours or longer). They’re used to going potty first thing around sun up, and then it’s eat/play time. Same thing at night. I give them an hour or so before my bedtime, but I’m sure that they could get by with 10 minutes. It’s always potty first. I control food for everybody. I can’t control water once they come off the porch. There’s too much water on this property. I’ve never employed or otherwise used a trainer with my Airedales.

They all eat the same thing. For the last several months, they’ve been eating the very good stuff because I found a hook up for them with a local equine rescue group that gets the broken bag very good stuff donated to them all mixed together. Real meat before grain/fillers. Before then, they’ve been eating the Retriever brand Hi Protein mini chunks in the blue bag from Tractor Supply.

Nobody is on any medicine. I’ve never found it necessary to take them to Dr. Fung except for Rabies/spaying. Except as I recall, Little Girl got chewed up one time by my mommies Gibbattee and Casey, but since they left here in the last year, I haven’t had any other pack fights. My adults will make a puppy flop and cry. They don’t tolerate any inappropriate touching with mouth/paws for very long. Nobody has bitten a human ever. They all might have scars from battles amongst themselves. They play rough with each other. Little Girl has a chewed up ear tip.

Their vet is Dr. Fung of the Tarboro Animal Clinic. I’ve never asked her for a reference, but I have no reason to think that she would object other than because of privacy concerns. If that’s the case, then I can try to release her. I’ve already told her that I’m working with you.

I’ve uploaded lots and lots of videos of my Airedales through the years to my YouTube channel. It’s easy enough to find my YT channel if you ask Mr. Google. I’m wishing that YT never finds a reason to delete my channel. My family knows that the kindest thing that they could do for me if I’m flat on my back somewhere is to put my YT Airedale Terrier playlist on a loop for me to watch/listen.

You don’t have to worry about my family or me ever disputing ownership. Please accept this email as your assurance and guarantee that our Airedales are yours to do with as you deem appropriate for them. We trust you to do right by our Airedales. If you need me to sign something relinquishing our ownership, then I will. Bring it with you, please.

If I could please ask a favor? Please don’t keep me in the loop. I feel like when I say goodbye, I want it to be forever. Anything else would be like picking at a sore scab sort of thing for me. If/when I ever want an update, then I know who to ask. You folks aren’t going anywhere.

More individual emails about my Airedales coming soonest. If you have questions/suggestions based on this email, then please ask.

                      Regards,

                        Good morning, again, Ben.

We have agreed that Barbara Yager will pick up all of your Airedales on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. She and her son Pat will rent a van and come to your home to pick them up. You and Barbara will communicate as to the time she will arrive.

You have 1 spayed female and 3 unspayed females; 1 intact male.
You have 10 puppies all born between October 31 and November 16, 2018.

Barbara will have a couple of crates, but if you can provide more crates depending on how much room she has for them, that will help in the transport. You have suggested that you hold off feeding them if she is coming in the morning because they travel better on an empty stomach.

You will provide the medical records on the adults from your veterinarian. They can email those records to us at info@airedalerescuegroup.com (so that it goes into our database), or if they prefer to fax them, the number is
                        1-815-301-2959.

Please tell us as much as you can about each of the adults and their personalities. At 4 to 4-1/2 months old, we can guess about the puppies! But any information you can provide about them will be helpful.

We have agreed to pay you $250 for the spayed female.

I look forward to your email with specifics on the adults.

Thank you for putting your trust in Airedale Rescue Group.

Hi, Cindy. I know we’ve talked about medicating dogs before. Do you think he’d benefit? He’s not exhibiting any repetitive behaviors like fly-snapping or circling? I am at a loss, Cindy, for where he could go. I need to change his profile and put him on FB to bring out people who might be able to direct that. IT sounds like he should be a drug-sniffing or SAR dog. Or flyball, agility, lure coursing.

You’re right about Chief and Banjo. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why people don’t/won’t work with their dogs to change the behaviors. Especially banjo! The mom wrote and told me that since he was neutered and has been kept on the enclosed porch and let out only on leash, he’s been happier! THEN CONTINUE THAT! But then she asks if we’ve found anyone. Sigh.

Neither Banjo nor Chief like other male dogs.

                          I’m working on them.

                          Hi Jackie,
“The George” continues to be a bit of an anomaly. If there is one word for this guy it would be intense. His intensity borders on OCD type behavior at times . I have seen this behavior in many true high drive working type dogs. On the positive side if you keep a strict routine and you are consistent with your handling these type dogs are great. If left to their own devices they often direct their energy toward bad habits that become unmanageable obsessions .
I have continued to work with him at Woofers and he has done better. I would say in general, daycare is too stimulating for him but still working on getting him in a less reactive mind set with regards to other dogs. He is otherwise very good in public on leash.
Bruce and I just spent a three day weekend in DC to celebrate our 35th anniversary so the dale trio boarded and he did fine. He also had a bath and another good nail trimming. Groomer says he is no problem to handle. I have him jumping on grooming table on cue and he actually enjoys a good brushing.
I continue to call him George as I noted when he first arrived he recalled to that name more so than Webster. I guess he had been George for much longer than Webster. Also seems people tend to rename the dogs when adopted so will have to learn yet another name. He is listed as George Webster at my veterinary clinic.
George will be challenging to place much like Maggie . I will certainly be available to provide support to a new family as it will take someone very committed to following thru on training. Seems like we are on a run with young males that are challenging. Although I have to say, I feel both Chief and Banjo could have stayed in their homes if owners had sought or followed assistance from a good trainer.

Wow! I would never have known and would have put my money of her being pure. We sometimes get adults that we think could have something else mixed in, and some may be, but some are just badly bred. Regardless, we are so happy that you have this little girl and that she will have a wonderful life being loved and cared for.

                            Happy Daylight Saving Time!

Hi, Jackie. We received Chloe’s test results this morning. As we thought, she’s part but not all Airedale Terrier.

Chloe is 50% Airedale Terrier, 12.5% Siberian Husky, 12.5% American Staffordshire Terrier, and the remaining 25% is a mix from various breed groups including Hounds, Terriers. and the Sporting Group, which includes Spaniels, Setters, Retrievers, and Pointers. The 25% Sporting Group isn’t broken down by breed.

So, Chloe is the perfect rescue, although not an Airedale Terrier rescue dog. She’s a mix that’s half Airedale Terrier with a little bit of everything else thrown into the mix.

The bottom line is, irrespective of breed lineage, she is very loving and very loved.

                            Sincere regards,

                            David & Lori

I buried grover in 2009. forget when he came along – -maybe 5+ years before then. and the house has been continuously occupied by at least one dale since then – – to include fosters both great (prophet) and not so great (inka) plus several in between. It is creepy not having anyone around now. so . . . if you were thinking. . . . . not fussy about boy or girl, no puppies/adolescents (fosters excepted). prefer mid to older, as a ‘normal week here is I’m gone for 10 or more hours a day, 5 to 7 days a week. so between I don’t have much patience and I’m not here enough . . . a more settled dale might would be a better fit. my girlfriend’s idiot dogs can be pushy, so a larger/confident dale would be ideal.

                              jk

                              03/04/19: thanks

one of the idiots is about 40 pounds. the other about 110. they are good dogs, but undisciplined and boorish. they were generally good around berk & z-dale. sometimes the dales would have to tell them ‘enough’, as they are both young and very energetic.

& to clarify, her dogs aren’t here. . . they live with her. there is a bit of moratorium on them visiting til I get electric fence in. they manage to get out of the existing fence, then go make the rounds in the neighborhood.

Hi, James. We do have 4 males currently – 6 years old, 4 years old, 3 years old, 2 years old. I’m not sure that any one of them would be right for your situation – particularly since you’re gone 10 hours a day. How big are the girlfriend’s idiot dogs? How are they with other dogs?

Let us think about it and go through what we know about them and present you with their particulars.

Good morning, all. It’s set! Hinkley will go to his new forever home tomorrow.
Please put the number(s) of the person(s) you will be meeting in your phones so that you may communicate whether you’re early or late or about your specific parking location. Try to park away from the entrance of the place you are meeting – in the back or side – but close to green space so that Hinkley may go potty.

                                Here is the transport plan:

8:00 a.m. Stew Tarkington driving a burgundy Ford Explorer
will pick up Hinkley at Cathy Abramson’s house:
5680 Cardigan Trace, Sugar Hill, GA

9:30 a.m. Karen Terry driving a white Toyota Avalon
will meet Stew at Walmart Supercenter (Exit 188 from I-75)
                                180 N Lee St, Forsyth, GA 31029

11:00 a.m. Richard & Lorie Smith driving a grey Santa Fe Sport
will meet Karen at Huddle House (Exit 67 from I-16 E)
                                10596 GA-29, Soperton, GA 30457

Richard & Lorie take Hinkley to his new home. All’s right with the world!

Hinkley will be wearing a rolled leather collar with tag and a slip lead. Please make sure the collar fits tightly enough that it will not go over his head so he can’t pull away if he gets scared. If you have an extra leash, please bring it so that you can close the door on the end of his leash with just a few inches sticking out. That way you can have your hand on his leash before you even open the door. We don’t want him to bolt! He will also have an envelope with his medical records, and a toy. Please bring a bowl so that you can give him water at the stop. A few small treats is a good idea, but we don’t want him traveling on a full stomach, just in case…
Please text me at 1-901-438-5782 when you have transferred Hinkley to the next person. Or call if you encounter any problems.

Thank you all for your love for Airedales and for your time and efforts to get Hinkley to his new owners. And, please let me know if you have any questions about the above.
