03/31/19:I just talked to Ann Calhoun for nearly an hour. Abby has gotten so dominant with Gretchen that she tries to block her from coming in the house. Abby has to be the first in and the first out. Last night when Ann & Jim got home from an evening out, they let the two outside and heard Abby start barking – which she does at everyone and everything that passes by their house or fence. When Jim went to let them in, they wouldn’t come and Abby was still barking. He went out and Abby was blocking Gretchen from coming in the house. When Gretchen tried to go around her, Abby jumped her. He grabbed Abby by the collar and pulled her up but she got free knocking him to the ground. He grabbed her again and held her up off the ground before she let Gretchen go. He said had he not pulled her off, he thinks Abby would have killed her. Gretchen had an open wound on her back by her shoulder and has 3 drains in those and another wound on one of her front legs.

I think they are beyond a consult or a trainer at this point. I looked up trainers in the area before I called her and one that I found was one that they used for Gretchen when she first came to them. They’re taking Abby this evening to a kennel they’ve used before when they’re traveling.

I told Ann that Abby would be hard to place and she realizes that but wanted to start with us. I suggested that she talk to the trainer she used before; she has the name of another trainer that a friend or two have used. They haven’t been walking Abby as much recently because she’s become so reactive to other dogs and has pulled Ann down twice.

I think the only place is with someone who has no other dogs and lives in a secluded place in the woods.

        Hi Ann
Sounds like Abby was in a good place and landed in an even better one with you all. Please check in with how things are going. Send a picture of both girls! If it does not work out, please let ARG find her a home. We have some great homes that are waiting for a dale. Good luck. Thanks for getting Abby.

Hi Christina, yes we have Abby with us. She is a doll! 15 months old, owners have done a great job training her, though she will need some additional training to reinforce what she’s learned so far and continue where they left off. The husband has had airedales in his family for generations and was very very sad to have to let Abby go.

Because we promised them we would give Abby a good home, we feel like we owe it to them, to Abby, and to ourselves to see if we can’t make this work as an direct adoption rather than fostering her for ARG. She and Gretchen are getting along famously. We think having Abby around might even help to bring Gretchen out a bit more.

If after a few weeks or months it looks like it isn’t going to work out, of course ARG would be our first call.

We hope you and Jackie understand….

Will let you know about the Brooker’s home visit as soon as it’s complete.

Heard back from Ashley this afternoon and Jim and I are going to meet Abby tomorrow. 😀. Don’t know if they will want to let Abby go home with us tomorrow, but I will certainly suggest (be prepared for) that.

Once we get her she is welcome to stay here as long as needed, especially if there is a chance she might go to the Brookers if their home visit checks out. We certainly have the room and Gretchen LOVES other dogs. I will get her vet records and/or get her checked out by our vet if need be. Forgot to ask if she was spayed but will find that out tomorrow.

Anything else you might need to know that I might not think of? Let me know.
Otherwise I will report back tomorrow.

this is awesome news! thank you for getting that connection to her. She has not responded to me as Airedale Rescue so that clues me in that she is either unaware of how awesome ARG would be to find her dog a home or she is anti-rescue. I think it is very helpful that you’re local – a local # that contact her vs a random area code.

Thanks for being firm with her – like that you’ll call her back, that is good. Nothing else we can do. Really appreciate your reach out to her.

Now, if this works out – let’s jump on it! If you can find out her vet, we’ll have that info but don’t worry about it if not, we can track it down. If you all can go get her and take Abby we will figure out the logistics quickly. Abby sounds so perfect!

        Christina,
I spoke with Ashley this morning. Sounds like there is another couple from Mt. Pleasant who might be interested in Abby (the dale). They are waiting to hear whether the wife of this couple says “yes” to taking Abby, but the owner is going to talk to her husband and call me back. By the end of our conversation she seemed to think Jim and I might be a better fit since we have prior Airedale experience–the other couple does not.

The Husband has had airedales before, wife grew up with Weimaraners and admits that airedales are quite different. They are expecting their 4th child and don’t have enough time to spend with Abby. Abby is housebroken, crate trained and very affectionate. She would like to be a lap dog-frequently shares the recliner with the husband. I think the wife simply seems overwhelmed.

I told her I would follow-up with her this evening or tomorrow morning.
        Will keep you posted.

Hi Ann, , ARG has a lot to ask of you recently…..I have another ARG favor.
This was posted last night on Charleston CL. Would you mind to reach out to this person as non ARG and ask her if you could adopt her dog. I’ve reached out as ARG as the intake coordinator and explained how we work. sometimes folks don’t understand what ARG is and don’t want anything to do with it. Therefore, I like to take two paths to try to get the dog.

WOuld you mind call or texting her and just saying you’ve had Airedales, Welshs and you’re interested in her dog. If she says yes then we can proceed with getting her. Don’t feel like you have to foster, it’s just trying to get the dog and you’re so close, I thought we’d try it this way. Let me know, thanks.

03/18/19: Jazzy is my biggest mommy. 60 pounds or so. Smaller than her mom. She wasn’t my first pick out of Gibbattee’s litter. She came back to me. I’m pretty sure that she was an early pick. She didn’t come back for any reason under her control. As I recall, it was a break up situation. She’s a regulator. She eats first. She’s a bit darker with what I tell folks is a more luxurious coat of black and tan. A little redder sort of thing. She is the best mommy that I’ve ever had. She keeps her puppies spotless. Loves me and does everything that I ask of her. If I could only have one Airedale? I’d have to flip a quarter to decide between her or Duke.

03/31/19: Kelly Geren-Imbody’s email to Trish Fore:
                Good morning Trish,

I submitted a synopsis of our conversation regarding your adoption application to our adoption coordinators. After discussing and reviewing my report, we have some concerns and have suggested the following recommendations:

The perfect or as close to perfect placement, and well being of the ‘dale is of uppermost priority.

We feel that a more mature, trained ‘dale vs a puppy would be more appropriate for your situation, i.e. an Airedale that is used to being alone during the day and can hold his/her bladder for and extended period of time due to your work situation.

The horse farm is of concern. As you well know, Airedales are curious pups and prone to chase…little and big “vermin!” Since you are not fenced, and this is not a requirement by any means, nor would we expect you to fence your 4 acres, we need to find an Airedale that’s been trained on an electric fence. They are out there! I have one.

Your situation is unique. We truly appreciate your desire for a ‘dale and want to do everything we can to place one with you. It just needs to be the right match.

If you are willing to wait and watch, to be patient the right ‘dale WILL come along. Let me know if these concerns of ours are acceptable to you. If so, we’ll proceed with setting up a home visit.

I know this probably isn’t what you were hoping to hear, but we want to place the BEST ‘dale with the BEST adoptive parent. I’ll wait to hear from you.

                Kindest regards,

                Kelly Imbody

No distemper since 2017 and before that regular. But as Nellie is getting so much older, Donna said they’re not doing all the vaccines.
She’s been going there since 2014. They have records from previous vet. Had something dental done in 2008. Then nothing till this past year when she had to have 12 teeth removed!
Nellie. Have some history from previous vet. Nellie is a very cool Airedale.
2009 ultrasound – could not visualize right kidney.

She doesn’t think Donna can handle a very energetic Airedale and certainly not an 88-lb (Duke).

Long, good conversation with Donna. More later.

                          From my conversation:
Nellie was born with just 1 kidney and she has 5/6 heart murmur from last physical last fall. They go about every 2 months. She’ll get to where she won’t eat or drink and in the last 18 months has had anal gland issues. Anal glands were never a problem. Anal gland infection was bad. Last time it was not an infection. But vet put her on prednisone. Then she can’t poop. She originally lost a lot of weight, but before Christmas prednisone and she’s eating well, twice a day. Thin, her hips and back are thin. At her best she was 70 lbs or so. Sleeps most of the time. She will wet herself.

She’s been with Dr. Fox 3-4 years. Was with another Dr Herman. 2012 she broke her back leg. Put a rod & pins in. She was on a sleigh bed with rails on the side. Jumped off and caught her back leg.

She can’t get up on the bed and needs help getting in the car.

Asked about her surrendering her 11-year-old Golden Retriever. Mother passed away 2 years ago. She has no siblings. No close family. Daughter in Wilmington and photog and husband and grandson. 2 years ago her mom died and she gave up Nellie. She also had a house disaster and was just overwhelmed. She gave Callie to a Couple with 2 children and another dog. It was a very hard decision.

Nellie Hasn’t been to day care for 6 months. She used to love it. Fence is like a privacy fence, plastic – looks like picket fence with lattice work on top. It’s the only place that is fenced is around the pool. She sent me beau coups photos of the pool – it’s huge – and surrounding area that is decking and stone. There’s room for the dog to run around the pool and/or swim if it wants to. Otherwise, she takes the dog out on leash to potty.

Nellie had 12 teeth taken out. Always had irritated gums. THIS IS A CONCERN. I want to talk to her vet. She’s only been seeing this vet for 3-4 years bc her previous vet died.

She describes herself as 5’4″ and 220 lbs. I wonder about her dedication to walking her Airedale.

Home visit will be critical to decide if this is a place for one of our ARG dales.

JMC sent this email to Donna about S&S Airedales:
Hi, again, Donna. Thank you so much for all the photos of your house, yard, and pool. I may want to come visit for a swim. How about all of June? I appreciate all your time on the phone and on getting these photos together and sending them to me.

We talked about the S&S Airedales we have remaining: Casey 2 (sometimes referred to as Casey’s Girl) and Duke. I’ve pulled info on both of them from Ben’s emails to us and then from Barbara Yager who has had the privilege of taking care of his Airedales since the 19th. BTW, she had all of them brought up to date on vaccines, wormed, the adults tested for heartworms (all negative!), and all of the dogs microchipped.

                          From Ben about Casey 2:
Casey #2 born 2/27/18. She is the Airedale that Dr. Fung spayed and gave her 1 year Rabies shot on 12/26/18. Her Rabies Cert has her DOB as 2/15/18, but that’s incorrect. Hoping that you can correct it. She has made a puppy cry several times and chases them, but she’s gotten a lot better over the last several weeks. She’s been skittish for most of her life. She’s still skittish/submissive around everybody except me and her pack. You won’t see a lot of ear perk or tail wagging until she learns to trust you. She is not leash trained, but she’ll follow along and comes when called most of the time. Treats help. I use sliced up hot dogs or bread. She responds to Puppy. She has an ping pong ball sized edema on her right front elbow. Dr. Fung drained it when she spayed her 12/26 (Rabies shot too). She recommended a softer bed and protecting it with a piece of pool noodle held on with a ace bandage or similar. She believed that it would resolve itself in 3 weeks or so. I tried that treatment, but it was too much of an attraction for her pack mates to ignore. It’s gotten a little smaller. It doesn’t seem to cause her any lameness or discomfort.

                          From Barbara about Casey 2:
Casey girl is skittish as you all said 🙂 I have gained her confidence. She will still not be approached from over her head and I cannot get a leash on her. She is dominant so no small dogs need apply. She has a lump filled with fluid on her right. If drained it goes away. She also nips if you are walking or especially when running away from her. We are working on that too. She needs someone with plenty of time to bring her out of her shell.
Update: Casey girl lets me touch her all over. Doesn’t like to be approached from over the head. Peanut butter on your fingers helps the attraction. I have NOT gotten the leash on but I am close. Casey will drag the horse lead rope all over with the pups pulling back on the other end. She is like my RIP Bessie, a queen, and likes everyone to remember that. She will be a lovely girl in a loving home especially with a submissive dog. ALTHOUGH she lets Lee hump her all the time with no growling or biting. Casey just lays down. Amazing. She will take a steady hand; NO young kids because of the running of people because she will nip even if playing contains running.

From Ben about Duke: He was born 1/23/14. His next 3 year Rabies shot is due 3/21/20. Occasionally (2X a year or less), he’ll get a silver dollar size hot spot on his right flank, but nothing that survives a medicated shampoo or two. He lets me know when he needs my help by licking it incessantly. Dig/chew outside? That’s one of his favorite pastimes. Chew inside? Well, he seems drawn to our wooden window sills and shades when I leave him free run inside our home for more than a few hours. He’s a bigger Airedale He’s at 85 pounds right now by my scale. He’s got at least 5-10 pounds of fat him. He gets all that he wants and then some. He’s a beast! (Ben had provided the following as general info on all of his ‘dales: They all learn to be calm, obedient and submissive to me. Putting their paws/mouth on me is never allowed. It’ll always get a rebuke and/or I’ll make them flop. They all chew/dig. As they get older, they learn not to chew stuff in our home. I still wouldn’t trust them around my heirlooms.)

                          From Barbara about Duke:
Duke is beautiful and sweet. What a love. Would like him to be with a large woman or man so the leaning of 88 pounds doesn’t take anyone out. He is good on the leash in the barn but I would not be able to hold him if he got excited. (I am currently 100 pounds). He will be neutered on Tuesday so will be good to be placed after that.
Update: I don’t see Duke with other males. Female sure. No really small dogs or varmints – i.e. cats either. Yes someone home most of the day or just short days away is good but he really does sleep most of the time. They are getting out 3 x a day for an hour. He is very much wanting to bond; when we sit in the barn he hops up on the trunk and sits with us. He is used to the routine now so no more FOG HORN BARKING but that bark is NOT for an apartment dweller or condo either.

Our next step is a home visit. We’ll ask one of our volunteers who lives nearby to contact you to arrange a convenient time to come to your home. She will want to see where the Airedale will live inside and out and meet you in person. I’ll introduce you to the person so you’ll know who is to contact you.

Thank you, Donna, for wanting to adopt a rescued Airedale.

I think you did a great job and a great review to move forward. Thank you. Knowing the breed, knowing what your own personal experience is and following gut instinct is essential.

Many of the dogs that come into rescue need a lot of training, love and time. I am leaning that this is not a good match for her at this time. But I default to Jackie or Bay for the next move (HV or not).

                                Thank you for helping us!

Excellent review, Kelly. You noted and talked about the most important things and I, too, agree with your conclusions. You can send her a follow up email expressing your concerns and advising that she could, could be considered for a settled, well-trained Airedale that is accustomed to being alone all day if she is approved. If she is ok with that understanding, we can schedule a home visit. (I don’t remember where she lives off-hand.)

                                Welcome to ARG! Good job!

                                  Hi Ladies!
I finally got around to talking with Trish. I was in Florida as Pat knew, then Trish was out of town, then Holden Beach was a bit up side down this past week as I along with another gal am Co-chair of our annual GFWC Gala and our President was a tragic victim of domestic violence. So needless to say, things have been out of sorts.

I spoke with Trish last night and also two of her personal references as she does not currently have a vet.

In reading over her application prior to speaking with her, one of my concerns was/is the fact that the ‘dale will be alone for 8 hours. She works full time. Lives alone, though she states her boyfriend/fiance hopes to move up from FL in 6-9 months. She has spoken with a neighbor whom lives behind her and owns a horse farm (another concern) about possibly walking the ‘dale during the day for potty breaks. She is not in a position in which she can leave work, come home and let the dog out.

She has had a total of 4 Airedales over her lifetime. She did not participate in obedience training. She stated that her ex-spouse said he may come and help her train but that she is not likely to use professional training. She related that her ex did most of the training when they were married.

She has 4 acres. A horse farm is behind her. She is not fenced. She would consider an electric fence. I read to her the bulleted points regarding no fence, electric fences and kenneling a dog.

She has maybe a slight leaning towards preferring a male. She would prefer a puppy but realizes that’s a long shot. Knowing that, she would prefer a 2 year old or less.

My concerns are as follows: She has no fence and doesn’t plan to fence. She also has no plans to formally train the dog. Those two things in combination don’t bode well. I worry about a dog running over to the horse farm, chasing the horses and then a tragic accident. (I know a fence isn’t mandatory. I’m not fenced but my Amos is trained and trained well.)
She works full time. It’s a lot to ask of a neighbor to take something like this on 5 days a week.
A puppy is out of the question in my book. My gut feeling is that she needs a ‘dale that is well trained that someone just has to give up because of a change in living situation, new baby etc.

Personal references were unremarkable. Both felt she was a “good dog mom.” She was diligent regarding veterinarian care. One related that she didn’t recall the ‘dales going places with she and her husband at the time as they traveled together often. One reference said that she had a good relationship with her kennel, that it “was a nice place.” This same reference stated that she didn’t remember friends “bringing their dogs over or anything like that. They pretty much had free reign as we lived out in the country so they didn’t need to.”

That’s all I’ve got. The ball is in your court now! I feel for Trish as I know she really wants a ‘dale. It just has to be the RIGHT ‘dale. We owe it to the ‘dale.

I hope I did ARG justice with my 1st application review. Let me know if you need any more information.

                                  Thanks,

                                  Kelly
