04/05/19: Sue volunteered on FB to foster Banjo! She and I will talk later this morning (she’s at work) to figure out the details.

04/01/19: Ann & Jim Calhoun want to surrender their 3-y-o Abby because she has become aggressive to their 8-y-o Airedale, Gretchen. She attacked Gretchen Sunday night and Gretchen had serious wounds. See Abby’s post.

04/03/19:The parents were pretty large. The father was heavier than her but I don’t recall weights. A couple of the photos were right after grooming ( a few months old) so she always looks “lighter.” She has never had long-term exposure to other animals but is always friendly while walking and when she is at the boarding kennel while we vacation. We had a wooden fence in ATL and she never tried to dig out from under. That was when she was just a pup though.

I have attached the vet records you requested. Also, the company we briefly used (only once) for behavioral training was “Bark Busters”. The lady’s name we worked with was Brenda Justice @ 843- 368-7297. We have not called her yet to let her know that we are trying to re-home Millie. Thanks again.

Hi, Geoffrey. Thanks for taking time to talk to me today about Millie. She sounds like a terrific Aire-girl who just needs some basic obedience and lots of exercise.

She’s a big girl at 80 lbs and just 15 months old. Do you know how big her parents were? Is she overweight? It’s hard to tell in her photos.

Has she ever been around small dogs or cats? Does she want to chase squirrels?

What kind of fencing did you have in Atlanta? Did she ever try to escape the fence or dig out?

The more we know, the better!

04/04/19: I’ve called and left voice mail and now emailed Pat Lanese to see if she’s interested.

            Hi Jackie,

            Hope you are doing great.

Thank you for asking about Finn, he is doing awesome despite a bevy of contractors through the house for punch list items making all kinds or noise. He is not fond of the shop vac, and really, really not a fan of the nail gun. Can’t blame him on the later, neither am I.
So, while still interested the timing might be bad. We went to contract on another home ten days ago and just extended due diligence period another week.
I know a bit crazy, but it was an opportunity that came up on our almost ideal location in town Chattanooga with a small fenced yard.
Stay tuned I’ll be back in touch when I know if we are moving again or staying put for a bit.

Hi, Tracey. Just touching base to see how Finn is doing in your new home. If you are still interested in being considered for adopting an Airedale, our next step is a home visit. Are you ready to go ahead with that? If so, I’ll find a volunteer in your area and introduce you to that person and let you two arrange a mutually convenient time for your home visit when both you and your husband (and Finn!) are home.

I look forward to hearing from you.

04/04/19: Hello, Holly & Edward. Please accept my apology for taking so long to contact you since you applied to adopt an Airedale. We are a very small organization of volunteers and are sometimes over-extended.

If you are still interested in pursuing adoption, we can pick up with a telephone interview. Please let me know a good time to contact you.

Thank you for your patience and thank you for considering a rescued Airedale.

Subject: Airedale Application of Kim & James McIntyre

Well, I think it will be easier to place a ‘dale with this couple than it will be with the first interview I did, which by the way…I’ve not heard back from as yet. That being said…

The McIntyre’s have no gender preference, though would prefer a puppy or younger ‘dale.

Kim works from home, so she will be with the ‘dale a goodly portion of the time. Their first experience with Airedales was with Abe, whom they put down in 2017. They adopted him at about age 1-1 1/2 via ATRA through Michelle Walker. Kim relates that she worked with a gal that was fostering Abe and she would come to work and “tell all kinds of stories.” So they went and met him and fell in love with him. Kim relates that Abe was well trained when he came to them and that her fear is that not all dogs/’dales will be like that. I told her that she was correct. They will not in all likelihood be as well trained as Abe. She relates that he didn’t require any additional training when he came to them, but they are open to obedience training. He was crate trained when he came to them and they used the crate until he became comfortable with his environment, then Abe had the run of the house and “his own couch.” The McIntyre’s, specifically James, have had hunting dogs in the past, so are well versed in the importance of training.

Kim stated that she has completed adoption applications for Airedales at a “couple of others places” but couldn’t remember where. She thought maybe one “was like a pet finding place.”

They are currently in a condo as they recently relocated but this is temporary. They want to get the lay of the land so to speak before purchasing a home. They do plan to purchase a home with a fence and if not fenced, will fence.

I have put in a call to her reference, but have as yet not heard back.
I want to get this in the pipeline and when I do hear back I’ll send an addendum to you all if that’s acceptable.

I explained that a home visit was necessary and that it would be set up after the application was processed. I encouraged to watch the site for the “perfect ‘dale” but cautioned her that this could and would take time. She realizes this.

Please let me know if I missed anything. As mentioned, I’ll forward you the pertinent reference information as soon as I receive it.

                  All the best,

Hi!! I did the home visit yesterday. Donna is very nice, and loves her dales. I am on the fence about if the dog would get enough walks and playtime. She did state that she let them run in the pool area when she was watching them. The neighborhood is wide open, and there are some wooded parts. She told me how her dale got loose one night. And her neighbors helped get her.

Describe Millie’s typical day: She’s crate-trained. Sleeps there at night and she goes to crate if she’s in trouble. Wake up and take her outside to the bathroom and then she’ll be inside with his wife. Not a fenced yard, they take her out on leash in the morning. She’d go outside for hours on end when they lived in Atlanta and had a fenced yard.
How old are the children: son is 9 and daughter 8. Millie is good with them, especially the daughter. Nips at Logan a bit, not biting. She wants to be with him all the time. He just broke both wrists and he is not giving her attention and she is frustrated. She’s not at all aggressive. The kids take her on leash. She has pulled away when they weren’t paying attention to go see another dog, or just sniff all the mailboxes. She has never attacked another dog, she’ll go meet another dog. No other dogs come to the house. She’ll jump up on people but nothing aggressive. She calms down well.
He called the Florida group – because that’s where they got her. They told him to call the breeder; he did. Betty Hogg? She is full and couldn’t take Millie back and recommended ARG.
They did hire a lady a dog-behavioral specialist – she was chewing and barks at everything – a leaf blowing across the yard. They learned some techniques that worked at first, but then they quit working. She came out for 1 session about 3 hours and went through some lessons. Paid $400-500 and it’s good for life (?). Get name of trainer. Brenda

Have a family trip in May and she is booked for kenneling and loves the dogs there – end of may and week after.

04/03/19: I spoke to Dr. Bihl, the Liemohn’s vet (also Cyn’s vet) and he was surprised that they’re not keeping Banjo. He said Banjo is a sweet dog and calm – didn’t seem bothered by any of the dogs in the back, but he has some health issues. He has as bad skin as he’s ever seen. Another day and he would have been bloody from chewing on it. His teeth are worn down completely to the dentin; you can see the black in the center on his incisors and on his bottom canines. I asked if that would be painful for Banjo and he thought it should be, but Banjo didn’t react or act like he was in pain. He said some vets would recommend just pulling all those teeth. Whew. He gave them Apoquel for the itching, but said it’s probably going to take repeated medicated baths, good food, and constant attention to his coat to get it – if it’s even possible – to good condition. It may be allergies. He doesn’t know. He just had to get the itching and biting stopped.

He said that he had advised Wendell weeks ago to not set his sights on an Airedale because they’re strong and willful. But Wendell had told him he needed a dog to walk with. Dr. B told him to go to the Blount County animal shelter and walk dogs for them and find himself a small, 30-40 lb dog that would love to go everywhere with him.

They brought back the Apoquel, 5 of the heart worm tablets, but only 4 of the flea/tick tablets. He doesn’t know if they gave him 2 of those or lost one. Whatever.

04/02/19: Wendell & Meredith Liemohn are not going to keep Banjo. They just got him yesterday from the owners and took him to the vet today. Meredith texted me and said they “spent $392+ at the vet today – meds for hookworm, flea/tick, and for excessive itching and biting, plus he had several vaccinations. His teeth are excessive worn down from a long time of biting his skin. This may be a long process if it even can be contained. Wendell just said if we had known all this we would not have taken him. He is a sweet dog with lots of problems. He also did not like the other dogs at the vet office.”

The vaccines were unnecessary – he was brought up to date on everything when we had him neutered on February 25, but apparently all the owner brought with her was proof of rabies shot. (I asked the Liemohns yesterday if they got his medical records and they said yes. Why would the woman only send part of them?) We knew he was not good with male dogs, but only if they stuck around. Meredith said he growled at every dog that came in the vet’s waiting room.

We did not know about his skin problems or his worn/absent teeth. They said with his skin condition and terrible teeth he is going to cost them a lot more than what they had planned on. He is not a healthy dog.

I’ve told them I’ll try to move him by this weekend.

Know anyone who wants a 6-year-old male dog with horrible skin, no teeth, is over-vaccinated, and who growls at all the other dogs?

Sometimes I just want to give up – not on the dogs, but on the people!

03/31/19:I just talked to Ann Calhoun for nearly an hour. Abby has gotten so dominant with Gretchen that she tries to block her from coming in the house. Abby has to be the first in and the first out. Last night when Ann & Jim got home from an evening out, they let the two outside and heard Abby start barking – which she does at everyone and everything that passes by their house or fence. When Jim went to let them in, they wouldn’t come and Abby was still barking. He went out and Abby was blocking Gretchen from coming in the house. When Gretchen tried to go around her, Abby jumped her. He grabbed Abby by the collar and pulled her up but she got free knocking him to the ground. He grabbed her again and held her up off the ground before she let Gretchen go. He said had he not pulled her off, he thinks Abby would have killed her. Gretchen had an open wound on her back by her shoulder and has 3 drains in those and another wound on one of her front legs.

I think they are beyond a consult or a trainer at this point. I looked up trainers in the area before I called her and one that I found was one that they used for Gretchen when she first came to them. They’re taking Abby this evening to a kennel they’ve used before when they’re traveling.

I told Ann that Abby would be hard to place and she realizes that but wanted to start with us. I suggested that she talk to the trainer she used before; she has the name of another trainer that a friend or two have used. They haven’t been walking Abby as much recently because she’s become so reactive to other dogs and has pulled Ann down twice.

I think the only place is with someone who has no other dogs and lives in a secluded place in the woods.
