04/10/19: Spoke to Brenda Justice 1-843-368-7297 with BarkBusters. She worked with the Buchanans only one time with Millie, trying to teach her to walk on leash. They were using a harness and it is difficult to teach a dog to heel that way. She would recommend a Martingale collar for Millie and when she pulls, just give her a “check,” a correction. BB offer a lifetime of training. If there is a BB rep where the Coughenors (who are considering adopting Millie) live, they will connect them.
She said Millie is very strong, but a sweet dog. She pulls. She nips at the kids’ pants to get them to pay attention to her. She wishes they had called on BB sooner.

They are seriously considering Millie; everything sounds great about her. They’re not concerned about the no training. Their Izzy, a female Airedale-mix, loves all dogs and had for many years a female Airedale friend who the Cs had before they got Izzy. They would have to wait till the weekend of the 20th to get her.April 10, 2019 at 12:38 pm in reply to: Katee (fka Hepburn, fka Frannie) ~ 5 y-o – Adopted by Beutells_moved to Florida 2022 #22624From: Airedale Rescue Group

My granddaughter thought that Kat bit her. Upon inspection of her hand and head it appeared that Kat gave her a growl warning, mouthed her head and hand. No puncture of skin in either place. I don’t think that she bit her.

Today Tammy called me and said it’s not working out. Kate is a sweetheart and then she is not. She has had accidents in the house. Sometimes she just stands and stares at the wall. They’ve had her checked by the vet and even did a neurological study but found nothing. They tried a day care or trainer that I recommended but she wasn’t accepted because she wants to dominate other dogs.
I’ve asked Tammy to fill out another Relinquishment form. I do not believe Tammy and Jay have done much of anything to help Kate. They should have surrendered her last August. Now she’s had another year of bad behavior to change.

It sounds like you’ve done a lot for Dinah and she just needs some fine-tuning. I agree with Lynn that a telephone consult with their trainer is a good idea.
When I need to find a trainer, I go to http://www.ccpdt.org, the Council for Certification of Professional Dog Trainers. I’ve found some near you and looked at their web sites and think they’d be worth your time to check out. I would tell you to absolutely avoid any trainer who wants to use an electronic collar on her, although they will say that it doesn’t hurt them, it’s just a vibration. When a dog is reactive, which is what Dinah sounds like, an electronic stimulation can exacerbate the reactivity and make it worse.
Here are a couple for you to check out:
Marjorie Evans at http://www.cleverk9dogtrain.com/
Katherine Barger at Horns to Halos https://hornstohalosdogtraining.com/I also checked under Association of Professional Dog Trainers https://apdt.com/
and searched within 100 miles of your zip code for certified trainers only and there are a few listed there. (Go to Find a trainer.)Let me add, Eric, that my Hawkeye, a 3-year-old neutered male Airedale loves other dogs when he goes to day care. Absolutely plays with all of them – large and small, slick and curly. But on leash, you’d think he was going to try to kill another dog. I’m working with a trainer, CCPDT and APDT certified, and it is a very slow, repetitive process to change this behavior. It is not aggression, though it looks and sounds like it. It is more related to frustration at having a “barrier” between him and what he wants. In this case it’s a leash. It might be the barrier of the front door.
Don’t be discouraged. Airedales are so very smart and they can learn and change their behavior. Good luck with finding some help with Dinah. She’s worth it.

At the end of November I hurt my knee and could not walk Dinah……Terri did it and Dinah learned to go out do her business and come in. I was on a cane for about 6 weeks, had operation scheduled then rescheduled and knee healed itself. So going early to avoid other dogs Start at 6 am or so. Since January building up the distance so now it is and 2 miles plus daily and we try and take different paths every day. In late afternoon I try again for ¾ – one mile. She also learned to walk by my side with loose leash.
When she saw other dogs at a distance she gave them a ‘hello’ big bark and tail up and wagging.
Then this morning came up on a leashed Boston Terrier rather quickly and she really flipped out with huge nasty bark growling I had my hands full to keep her under control…. Arm around her – and telling her no. We are getting a reputation about being a nasty dog and the other walkers avoid us at all costs.
She is ok with humans though. Wants to greet all of them.
Barks at door bell , knows someone new there.
So I need some sort of evaluation to understand what is going on with her with this nasty barking at other dogs.
Have you found any trainers around here…..If not we live 2 hours from Florence SC. Not a bad drive
Accidents around the house. Had a 2-3 in Jan Feb. Not so many since then. “ Blue weight control” is the food, + some pumpkin 3 times a day to avoid over filling stomach. She went thru a vomit stage for about 2 weeks…..Ate a magazine and that started it. Two trips to the vet to check out the digestive track…all ok. Take out in AM, early afternoon and before bed time.
Trying to read her clues. (Yes she is training us.)
Thanks in advance for your help

She would have liked to have started her off walking sooner than they did. They were having a hard time controlling her on a walk. She seems like a sweet dog. She’s very strong.
She’ll look back at their file and call me tomorrow with more info.

Yes this guy is a ball of fire. I also think he does not know how to relax or self-sooth. Thursday he had a good four hours of day care social and never once slowed down, sat down or laid down until I put him in a covered crate. On the way home that day he was sitting up in the back seat next to the window with his head down on the arm rest sound asleep. But he is really doing well in the evening with relaxing on a dog bed. Previously even touching him could be too stimulating . He now stretches out and is completely still while I give him a massage . He even rolled over for a belly rub without once getting mouthy. You would think I was talking about a 6 month old puppy!
I am still giving the CBD oil. I am on the last of the first bottle and have purchased a second bottle but will try reducing the dose. I am hoping the CBD oil is serving as a tool to help me teach him to calm himself but will not be a long term must for him.
Best tactic to manage the mounting has been doing everything possible to prevent him from getting over-excited. When he gets highly excited he “air-humps”, no dog needed. So lots of managing on leash and pulling out and putting him in a sit as soon as he even starts to arch his back, fixate or get highly excited.
Once he is in action he is pretty oblivious to any correction. Went through his habitual humping phase at home for some time until my dogs were no longer a fascination to him. During this phase I never let him interact off leash. It does not matter if male or female it is more about novelty. The dog he picked on Thursday was a big goofy English Mastiff that the owner had coated with some powerful, horrible smelling stuff. The smell was driving us all nuts . GW is very scent driven so that may have been part if not all of his fascination with that dog. He ran and chased and play with the other dogs we put in his group without humping.
I have tested him in so many situations. He does not resource guard. If he offends another dog with his rough stuff and the dog snarls he freezes (the perfect response) . This behavior is dog language for “cool it dude – I mean no harm”. I feel confident if there were a dog fight involving George it would be because the other dog did not accept his apology and he had no choice but to defend himself.
He makes me think of the big goofy kid in school that you would scream at because he so got on your nerves. Then he would just smile and say “ok – ya going to the game tonight.”
This dog really works me over and has challenged me as a trainer. But he is good to the bone. Just needs one pretty special person because he is a big commitment. He would be great at a dog sport. Think he would do well at tracking or scent work.Cindy

Yes Jackie, you were right. They wanted the McIntyre’s permission before they would speak to me regarding Abe. This HIPPA stuff has gone a bit to far…but I digress!Anyway, I did speak with the vet or vet tech I should say. He was kept up to date on both heart worm and flea/tick preventative. Two dental cleanings were on his record. No unusual injuries or visits were recorded. They considered the McIntyre’s good pet owners.
I also spoke with Cheryl Havens, their personal reference. She remembers Abe with fondness. Said he was a “big baby”. Good with people and other animals. Traveled with the McIntyre’s. She related that he was “better taken care of than most children I know and better mannered too!”
I hope this provides you with the additional information that’s needed to make a more thorough assessment. My learning curve is getting a little flatter I hope!
Enjoy your weekend!!

Hi, Donna. Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I had a very busy weekend that culminated with my husband having to go to the ER. He’s fine now, but it was so tiring and stressful.
(Have I already written you and forgotten? If so, excuse my forgetfulness.) I want you to know that you are approved for the right dog. Running around the pool in the warm months is not enough exercise for a young Airedale. And Casey is a skittish, timid dog who would not do well in a dog park and she’s not very good on leash. If she was being walked and got spooked, it would be difficult to hold her for anyone. At 1 year old, she would need 45 minutes twice a day of good exercise.
We will absolutely keep you in mind for the right Airedale, and they’re out there. We just don’t know when we’ll get them. We’ll stay in touch.

Thank you. I will say my heart is broken but Please do not forget me. I have no idea how much longer Nellie has and I really want another with us before she passes. I would have not problem taking Casey to the dog park at Tanglewood or to Ruff Housing for more exercise. But I will leave that up to you.
Thanks again.

Subject: Airedale RescueHi, Donna. Thank you for taking time for Lori Nelson to come to your house and meet you and Nellie. She had good things to say about you and your love for your Airedale.
We know you have had your heart set on one of Ben’s Airedales, but we don’t believe either Casey, the 1 year old female, or Duke, the 5 year old male, would be a good match for you. Duke is much too big for you to handle, especially if you were walking him on leash and he got away from you. Casey is only 1 year old and will require a higher level of physical exercise than she can get walking and playing around your pool. As a timid Airedale, if she were to get loose, she would be very difficult to catch because of her skittishness.
We will keep you on our list for the right Airedale.
Thank you, Donna!

04/05/19: Hi Jackie!
I thought I had updated you on that sad situation, I hope I didn’t just write the emails in my mind!We are happy to have Christina come for a visit at her convenience.
I did notice that Banjo is not great with little kids, and we do have a 1 year old. I’m always willing to foster and help out as well though and as long as the pup is not aggressive with the kiddos, willing to work with them.
Oh and we now have a change in dog situation, our old mutt, catfish, passed away in fall due to gallbladder mass. Sorely missed.
And in addition my mom surprised me with an Airedale puppy for my birthday last summer:) so we now have Sage, a sweet crazy Airedale pup. Thanks for your time and hard work!!!
Kindly,

Hi, Caroline. I tried to call you yesterday but got voice mail. The last I heard you were adopting a “retired” female Airedale from a breeder, so I thought you were no longer interested in adopting from ARG. I’ve gotten in touch with Christina Prange who was scheduled to do your home visit before that happened. She will be happy to do that now if you’re ready.
Please let us know. Thank

Jackie, I’m so glad someone has come forward for Banjo! Definitely keep my name on file for any needs that arises. Like I said we can be a temporary foster, transport or forever home for the right dog 🙂Christina, we are available – and everyone home- on Sunday all day if that works!
I’d love for you to meet Sage she’s so fun:)Cheers!

A+ Rating for Caroline!!!!More details when I get home
Of course she has kids, baby, chickens and cat and no fence but she would integrate a dog well.
She had the coolest chickens!!!!
She lives across the street from donkeys.
Their children were so well behaved. And the daughter was reading a book at the table. Jeff said to me I know you loved seeing that girl reading a real book. Very polite family. The donkeys killed a coyote this week! She showed me a picture- ugh. A veterinarian lives right up the road and the vet came and checked out the situation. She said the donkeys kicked the coyote in the head. They did what they were supposed to do.
