05/18/19: Janet texted me that Lesa came over and did the home visit this morning. Janet wanted to know the typical wait time to get a ‘dale, but reminded me that she can’t take one till August 9

05/18/19: Spoke to Jackie Rowan about fostering Odie, but she can’t take him because they’ll be out of town when he gets out of the vet’s. She could possibly drive to meet someone Thursday when he’s released.

          05/15/19: to Nancy Rokicki.
Hi, Nancy. Thanks for taking time to talk today. Yes, a photo of the backyard would be helpful. And, please give me your address again. As we were talking, I was putting notes into our database; however, the site had not refreshed and I lost what I had entered. ARGHHH. Please also give us the name of your vet. How nice that he comes to your home.

I’ve attached a video of the trainer working with Kate on heeling. I have a couple more videos, but I’ll send them separately so they don’t clog up your email.

I’ve gone back to look at all our info on Kate and want to update what I told you. I was working from my sometimes unreliable memory.

She came to us from a shelter in TN, rather than NC, in June 2017, so 2 years ago. She was fostered by an Airedale-experienced woman in middle TN, Molly, who has fostered many Airedales for us. She had an older female Airedale and a young Airedale male she adopted from us. While she was fostering Kate, her female was staying with her daughter in Chattanooga and just her young male was with her. She vacillated between keeping Kate and giving her up to the right home, because she loves fostering. In September 2017, she decided she wasn’t going to keep Kate. We had applicants who happened to live near Molly, so she conducted their home visit, took Kate to meet them, and we approved them to adopt Kate.

Everything went well until July of 2018 when the new owner contacted me and said they wanted to relinquish Kate. Her daughter and granddaughter had moved in with their dog and Kate did not like the dog. They kept the visiting dog upstairs and Kate downstairs and wouldn’t let them interact. Already, the owners had experienced problems with Kate on walks when they encountered other dogs. She would lunge and bark at them and once at a dog park, did attack another dog. It was a quick encounter and neither dog was hurt. They hired a trainer to work with them and Kate in the home. The trainer in one of her first visits to the home had them bring the Lab downstairs and Kate immediately went after him. (I blame the trainer for this!) The trainer’s opinion was that Kate has no confidence and doesn’t know she’s a dog. She also has anxiety and is extremely thunder/noise-phobic. The vet prescribed Trazadone for the thunder/noise phobia. The trainer recommended CBD oil for Kate’s general anxiety, but the owners say that it didn’t help.

Then the owners changed their minds about surrendering her. They decided they would continue to work with the trainer and the daughter had given up the Lab to a rescue group so there was less stress in the household. I checked in with them a couple of times since last August and everything seemed to be going well until early April 2019.

The owner called me and sent in a Relinquishment form on Kate listing the same problems: Kate doesn’t like other dogs, she gets too anxious during thunder & lightning or fireworks, and went back over the history from the previous time she had wanted to surrender her.

We didn’t hesitate, but we did not have a good foster home for her so she went to a trainer in Nashville who does board-and-train. He came highly recommended by the vet’s office who had seen Kate since she was with the owners.

Throughout all of this, the owners have described Kate as happy, sweet, loves to play with her squeaky toys, loves to go for walks and car rides, and loves to put her head in your lap to nuzzle and get her ears scratched. She goes out into her yard and patrols the fence looking for squirrels. Sometimes, they leave the door open to the deck and she’ll lie on the deck and watch the yard. She’s crate-trained but sometimes doesn’t like to go in her crate (?). She wants to be with her people whether inside or outside.

The current trainer, Josh (in the video) gave his opinion to me last week:
Kate is sweet as can be, knows basic commands. Needs consistency and work on those things. Pretty responsive. Learns quickly. Sit, stay. Come. A little hip dysplasia but keep her on Dasuquin and she’ll be better. High energy. Some anxieties. Needs confidence building, boosting, doing things with her; physical praise and treats. Very loving and very responsive. Issues with other dogs bc she’s energetic and wants to meet other dogs. Work on those reactions. She gets along with others there. Ready to be with a family forever.

We think Kate would do well with a family that is home more than they’re away, are willing to continue working on her training with positive reinforcement and praise, who will see that she gets both mental and physical stimulation; i.e., indoor games or puzzle toys, playing “find it” both inside and out, teaching her what is expected of her, allowing her to be a dog, playing fetch with toys or balls in the back yard, and being with her people.

I’ve tried to give you all the information we know on this Aire-girl. She is up to date on all her vaccines and tests, has been on heart worm preventative continuously. I did notice in her medical records that she has gained 13 pounds since June 2017 — from 54 to 67 pounds! She obviously has not gotten the exercise that she needs. We think Kate is between 4 and 6 years old.

I’ll send you more videos. If you want to talk about Kate, let’s talk tomorrow. I’m about to shut down for the night.

Thank you for your consideration, Nancy.

          They turned Kate down.

            Hi Jackie,

I was so ready for this girl so was somewhat surprised that Phil didn’t think we were ready. This is a discussion we will have and I will let you know about looking for the right one or just withdrawing our application. I don’t want this to happen again as it isn’t fair to you, or me for that matter. I think he gets concerned about health issues (ours) in the future but you can’t predict that.

I did take a video of the back yard yesterday. It was the first one I had ever done and not the best so if Phil think he is okay with your looking for the right Airedale I will re do it and email it for our file.

Hope you have a good weekend, it is going to be hot here and I think the same there.

            Take care,
            Nancy

Hi, Nancy. Thanks for the update. I understand your position.

Is Phil’s hesitance because of Kate’s issues and past history? Or is he just not ready for any Airedale right now? If it’s the former, tell me what you and Phil are looking for in an Airedale. We can then keep you in mind for the right one.

            Have a great week.

            Hi Jackie,

Phil doesn’t think that we are ready for Kate and since he is 50% of the family I have to go with it. I am not real good at nagging. However, I will still send you a picture of our back yard for future reference. Hope she finds a good forever home, I was sure it was going to be here.

            Take care,

Abby is doing great. She thinks she’s about 7 or so. Abby was so anxious and timid when she first got her that she’d go hide when people came over. She didn’t like men at all, but now she’s fine with almost everyone. Leah has a lot of friends who come over and Abby is always right in the middle of things.

Carrie will not be a good fit for her with Leah gone 8 hours a day.

They would like a male but would consider a female. Their Fairfax has been gone 4 years – he lived to be 15.

They need a laid-back dog. They don’t do a lot of walking around the neighborhood because of hills, but would play with their dog in the backyard. Wants one that is at least a little bit trained and is friendly. They have a large yard with a chain link fence. They’re both retired and don’t do a lot of traveling. No young children visit.

Very nice woman and knowledgeable about dogs and Airedales.

Person from LowCountry Vet called this morning and said Charlie, Janet’s Airedale, is always up to date on vacs, heartworm preventative, flea/tick preventative, and comes in once a year for teeth cleaning. Her previous dogs were also kept up to date on everything and on appropriate preventatives. I asked her if she had a stray she was trying to find a home for, would she consider Janet, she said absolutely.

                                Lesa will do home visit.

05/09/19: 05/09/19: I wrote an extensive post on this after my conversation with Janet and apparently didn’t hit submit because IT’S NOT HERE!

Janet lives alone but has two renters in the home who she thinks will be leaving within a year. I asked if she would replace them and she didn’t think she would. Janet has a 7-year-old Airedale, Charlie, whom she adopted off craigslist becoming his 4th owner! He had a lot of issues and lack of socialization, but she was committed to him and worked with him and sent him to a trainer. That helped but she later got another trainer to come to her home to teach him not to jump. That has not stuck. She formerly had a mini-Schnauzer and a Skye Terrier but both died within the last year.

Her yard is fenced on 3 sides with a wooden 6-ft fence and one side with a 4-ft chain-link fence that she shares with a neighbor. They put a gate in that fence so that Charlie can go over and visit the neighbors’ dogs – a lab and a terrier mix. They all get along great. Charlie loves all dogs and misses his pals. The neighbor will watch her dog and vice versa. The renters also help watch Charlie when Janet has to be out of the house for any length of time.

She has a dog door and I cautioned her to not allow a recently rescued dog unsupervised use of that dog door, especially with only a 4-ft fence on one side. She understood and agreed to not letting a new dog have access until she was certain that it would not go over the fence.

When I asked about a typical day for her and Charlie, she said they would walk in the morning sometimes and in the afternoon sometimes. I asked if that was everyday and she said not every day but most days. Plus he plays in the yard with the neighbors’ dogs. He’s laid back and calm and loves other animals and people. He’ll chew on a marrow bone or play with his frisbee.

My concerns are whether a new Airedale would get enough exercise and whether Janet has the financial means to care for a dog when her renters leave. She did get a great vet recommendation.
