06/02/19: From Janet:
As far as my traveling in the future I won’t be going away at all if I am fortunate to adopt until I see that all is well with our new member of the family. As far as length of time away for leisure it would be at most a week in the summer and a weekend trip in fall. I am going for a week next summer for a family reunion and if the renters are not here anymore, Jennifer my neighbor has a lab and a small terrier mix that are very dog friendly. I go to their house when they go on trips. She would come over to the house to care for Charlie and new fur baby. If they by chance move away I have friends who would come over and dog sit or my other neighbor. We wouldn’t have play dates until the new fur baby has acclimated to new environment. I take Charlie out for daily walks ( except if it rains) as well as Jennifer the tenant. When they move out I would definitely walk both dogs with no trouble at all. As far as walking more than one dog at a time I have always had 2 or 3 dogs and walked both of them and even 3 most of my adult life. Charlie was used to walking with Griffin or Maddie til they passed away within 8 months in 2017-2018. I hope I answered all of your concerns. If not, let me know if I missed an area of concern. I understand that you need to make sure that I know what I am getting into and that he or she will be in a nurturing safe, and consistent environment. I hope I didn’t ramble on and on 🤪
Ty,

Hi, Janet. Thanks for your message today and, yes, you are approved for an Airedale once your pet-sitting commitments have ended – after August 8th.Lesa Parrot gave you a good recommendation after her home visit, but I have some questions. She said that you plan to travel more in the future, for leisure rather than business and that your neighbor would take care of your dogs. Can you estimate how much time you would spend away from home in your travels? You mentioned in our interview that you and your neighbor look out after each other’s dogs when one has to be away from home. Does that include you taking her dogs into your home and vice versa? That is a consideration for whatever dog you get. Certainly, your new Airedale would need to get along with Charlie, but it also would need to get along with your neighbors’ dogs. What kind of dogs does your neighbor have? If you told me, I didn’t make a note of it.
I understand that your tenants walk Charlie a lot and I need assurance from you that even after they’ve gone that your new Airedale would get plenty of exercise and daily walks. Do you think you’ll have any problem walking two at a time?
We want to make sure we consider everything in your lifestyle and home that will help us determine the best Airedale for you (and Charlie).
Thanks, Janet.

I would have to rate her more on the couch potato side. Physical appearance and her yard needed some attention as well…Sent from my iPhone

Oh, you could handle two! You’re young!

Thankfully Bates is also Ozzy’s owner/dad and is there every day and contributes on everything.
I felt like she was about 70% committed honestly.
I’m assuming she is retired? I tried to ask leading questions- and in – traveling for work? She said no – just with friends.
She may have more energy than I’m giving her credit for if she is retired, considering I work a good 40 hour week still! :))

Morning, Lesa. Thank you for your thorough, thoughtful evaluation of Janet Price. You did mention a couple of things that I was concerned about: her physical ability to care for another dog and her financial ability to care for another dog.
I certainly wouldn’t place a young, energetic Airedale with her based on this. But even 8-10 year old Airedales need regular exercise, and with age comes illness. On “commitment,” I couldn’t make out what you wrote: is it 70% or 90%?
I don’t think another visit is necessary, but I appreciate your offer. I’ll approve her conditionally for a settled dog, but will outline our concerns. The travel, of course, is also an issue.
Thank you, Lesa! Great report.

I wanted to send a “I hope we get George” email.” It seems there are few people interested in George, but he seems like a match for us and I would like to meet him and pass your criteria before he is adopted by someone else. I’m happy to do anything required on our end to move this along faster. Thanks! KrishnaI will respond to her that we are evaluating all applications. George has been in rescue a long time because he had no training, no socialization, no people or dog skills, and it will take a very active, dedicated person or family to keep him busy and physically and mentally stimulated. We do not think he is suitable for a first-time Airedale owner.
All –
Thank you so very much for volunteering your time to transport Odie this Thursday. Without your dedicated, dogs like Odie might not get the chance they deserve. Special thanks to Christina for helping map the transport.
A few reminders:
We don’t know this dog. Consider him a FLIGHT RISK!
We were told he likes car rides.
Double collar and leash him; bring an extra collar and leash of your own, just in case. Make sure the collar is on him with only 1 finger of space between the collar and his skin.
Secure Odie in the vehicle by either a kennel, a seat belt or closing the end of the leash in the car door.
Bring a water bowl and water to allow Odie to have a drink at transfer points.
Make sure you have a secure hold of the leash before allowing Odie to exit the vehicle.
Any updates will be sent in the morning.Odie Transport

CC: Jackie Cash < airedalemail@comcast.net>, Pat Nowak Hairston < hairstonpat@gmail.com>Thank you, all, for your words of encouragement and ideas. Odie and I have had some ups and downs in the last few days:
escaped the yard again…but, a friend came up with a fix for that particular corner of the fence that seems to be keeping him in the yard for now
chewed through his head collar when reacting to a dog during a walk in the neighborhood – yikes!
still biting and jumping a lot…but, less than last week!
figured out that the crate may not be an option for him, he will bark for HOURS (literally!) if I put him in there; instead, I’m keeping him in my sunroom (has a couple of fans and a vent for the HVAC) while I’m away. That seems to be working. At night, he’s roaming the house freely but seems to spend a lot of that time outside my bedroom door. So far, no issues overnight!
he seems to understand the boundaries in the house and he’s picked up a couple of commands this week; he’s a smart boy!
I’m looking forward to the training – thank you so, so much for arranging that! I’m really hopeful that Odie can learn quickly so we can continue some of this positive momentum. I’ll check back in once that’s scheduled and/or we’ve had our first meeting with the trainer. Thanks for your patience as we work through this. I’m still hopeful that I’m the best fit for Odie but not totally ready to sign the agreement quite yet. Please let me know if this becomes an issue at any point. Thanks so much to all of you! Again, I really appreciate your support and guidance through this transition.Katherine & Odie!

Hi Jackie,
Thanks for reaching out. It has definitely been an exciting week. I was so thrilled to meet Odie Monday. He is such a sweet boy that just wants to be loved. Unfortunately, this desire is so strong that it’s creating some significant issues for me/us. Despite, very consistent praise/discipline, he gets excited and jumps/nips a LOT. He continues to break out of his crate, even after I’ve added carabiners to the doors. (I’ll try adding a third one tonight.) Today, he got out of the yard (while I was outside with him). I found him one street over. A younger child was crying because Odie “bit him.” It turns out Odie just nipped him. Thankfully, the mother was really nice about it. Tonight, when we were in the yard, he went back to the same corner in which he escaped several times. Thankfully, he listened to me and didn’t jump that fence again. I’m worried that he will continue to push the limits with that fence and it won’t be the last time he gets out. Unfortunately, I’m not in a financial situation that will allow me to upgrade the fence. That alone concerns me about the idea of adopting Odie. I already love him and, again, he is such a sweet boy! I really want this to work out but I’m concerned it may not be the best fit. I don’t know that I’m ready to give up but I also don’t know that I’m ready to adopt him.

05/29/19: Emailed Marion & Sally Dixon to see if they could do a home visit for us.
05/29/19: Had a nice convo with Rick Corbitt. He works for Apple and works from home. His wife, Danielle, has MS, the progressive kind, which means she gets worse for a while, then plateaus, gets worse, plateaus. She’s at a plateau and hasn’t gotten worse in about 8 years, but she does have trouble walking fast. Rick is the one who walks their Blue Boy daily – lots of walking and playing. If they can’t walk at night, they have games they play in the house – Rick throws a toy up onto the landing and Blue goes to get it and runs back down, repeat!
Blue Boy is not neutered and they haven’t decided if they are going to neuter him or not. Their 2 vets have different opinions: if you’re going to breed, don’t neuter. If you are NOT going to breed, neuter when his growth has stabilized. Not neutering, prostate or testicular cancer are potentials. He is a sweetheart and loves everyone except a GSD that lives across the street behind a chain link fence. The GSD runs the fence and barks at every one and every dog. They avoid him. Blue Boy gets along great and plays with their 40-lb Maine Coon cat! The cat keeps him in line. The cat has a private bathroom that is gated to keep Blue Boy out and it is the cat’s safe space if she needs to stop playing with BB.
BB is always crated if Rick & Danielle are both away from the house which is not very often and typically not for very long at a time. He sleeps in his crate at night. I talked to him about Carrie and that she will willingly go into her crate at night (at least she used to), but if left alone in a crate, she will try to escape and has escaped the crate. He said he felt certain he could train her to feel safe and not try to escape. Also, he felt that he could control the environment enough that she will not be a problem with the cat.
They trained him at PetSmart with a woman, Megan, who was a horse trainer previously. She was excellent. They did the beginner and intermediate obedience training and really liked Megan.
I like them for Carrie. Need to get the vet reference and a home visit!

Subject: Kate Transport Saturday May 25, 2019Hello, Airedale Lovers! Thank you all for agreeing to help Kate get to her new home. She will be traveling with a bag of food, her records, leash and collar.
Please note the email addresses and phone numbers of the other drivers you will be meeting (and make sure I have your numbers right!) so that if you are running late or ahead or have any change to the schedule, you can inform the necessary parties. Once you have transferred Kate to the next person, please text that person & me to let me know all is well and on schedule. Please take photos!
Please note the time change between Cookeville & Knoxville.
Kate is known to have anxiety issues. Be extremely cautious!
We’ve been told she rides well in the car. But she is likely to be confused.
She will be wearing a martingale collar that – when fitted correctly – will prevent her backing out of the collar. It should be tighter than a normal flat collar. It should easily go over the head, but when you pull on the leash it tightens so that it cannot go back over the head! We always recommend a double collar/leash; bring an extra collar and leash of your own, just in case.
Secure Kate in the vehicle by either a kennel, a seat belt, or by closing the end of the leash in the car door. That way you have your hand on the leash before you even open her door.
Bring a water bowl and water to allow Kate to have a drink at transfer points. A few treats will be nice, but we don’t want her to be traveling on a full stomach.

May 23, 2019 at 9:33 pm in reply to: Private: Mackenzie Caldwell, Raleigh, move to Clt Approved with fence improvements #2283105/23/19: Had a nice convo with Mackenzie today. She had just returned from Birmingham to Raleigh. She works for L’Oreal as a rep for one of their specific lines and goes to stores that carry their products. Her work schedule is very flexible – she does her schedule 1 month in advance and can schedule days off or half days as needed. She can work from home 2 days a week. Her boyfriend who will be moving in with her when they move to Charlotte has a regular 9-5 job and will be with the same co when they move. They are moving into her father’s home – her childhood home – but her father and her brother are staying probably till December or January.
We talked about Carrie/Casey and I told her Casey’s story and that she really needs to be with another dog and really needs to be with her human. When I asked if she thought her dad would want to adopt Casey now and then everything would be good when they move in, she said she was thinking the same thing. Her dad loves Airedales and would love to have another one, because his Max just died last year, but he didn’t want to have to do the adoption. He encouraged her to do it. Her brother has a Newfoundland pup and is still living there so Casey would have a female ADT and a youngster to play with. Mackenzie visits often and is visiting this weekend and would welcome a home visit. She is a smart young woman and loves Airedales and wants to adopt rather than get a pup.
I’ll check vet references.
I asked Bay to home visit.
I did tell Mackenzie of Casey’s history, that she is timid, that she needs another dog companion, that she wants to be with her person and will probably love Mackenzie’s dad. This is a “family” adoption even though Mackenzie and her boyfriend will not move in until August.
