On 07-24-22 The Mettreys visited Amy and Sheba. They loved Sheba and she loved them and went home with them. So far so good. We’ll await their signed adoption contract but I think this is a done deal.

Jyll could not meet on Monday but offered Tuesday or Friday. Ralph & Mark (on the 23rd) said they could meet Tuesday at 2:00 but Jyll has a meeting so that day is out. Will coordinate between these folks to see when Jyll is available for them to visit.

Sheba is not the dog for the Mettreys because they told Amy Watts, Sheba’s owner, that they have 2 dogs. On their app they say they have 1 dog, “an older mixed-breed, very friendly.” Need to know more about this dog and another dog?

UPDATE: They are going ahead with the meeting at the request of the Mettreys.

My email to Meloni on the 19th:

Hello, Meloni. Please accept our apologies that no one has contacted you since we received your application. Our normal procedure is to assign a volunteer to contact you to go over the application and learn more about your situation. Somehow, your application slipped through the cracks.

After we have our phone discussion, if we believe an Airedale would be right for you, we would assign a volunteer to do a home visit. We want to see everywhere inside and outside that your Airedale would be allowed and we want to meet everyone who would be involved in caring for your Airedale. If you are approved after the home visit, we would consider you for any Airedale we got into Rescue, based on your lifestyle and the Airedale’s personality and requirements. We have many approved applicants waiting for the right Airedale, so it is not a case of first come, first served. It has to be a good fit for both the adopter and the Airedale.

I can call you tomorrow. What times are you available to talk for about 1/2 hour? (I am not available between 12:00 and 2:00 pm CDT.)

Thank you for your patience, Meloni, and I look forward to talking to you.

As of today, I’ve not heard back from her.

Hello, Michael & Iris. I work with Christina Prange and Pat Hairston in Airedale Rescue Group. Christina told me that you would like to meet Sheba and I have spoken to Sheba’s owner, Amy Watts, copied above, and she is amenable to that. By connecting you via email, you all can work out a date and time that is mutually convenient for the meeting.

Please keep us in the loop on your scheduling. We think that you, Michael & Iris, will love Sheba and will want to take her home with you. Amy loves her but realizes that Sheba needs another home. We hope that this works out well for all, particularly for Sheba.

Let us know if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your love of Airedales.

                          Hi Jackie,

                          I’m off Monday, July 25.

We could drive down to see Bear on Monday. Is there a convenient time we could go? What is the address of his foster family?

Eric Kentgen called back and said Brock and Reed are great guys and good dog owners. A couple of years ago Brock took care of Eric’s dogs (Maltese-Poodle and Poodle) when he went out of town. He said they love dogs and will take great care of any dog they get.

                              From Amy Watts 07-20-22:

I have contacted Highland Animal Hospital and asked them to send her records.

This week has been a blur since I got her back. The new med, ‘Fluoxetine,’ is a heck of a lot better than Ace. So amazing. 13$ for a month’s supply. I would definitely keep a month’s supply on hand. And house lattice is literally just butter to her. She glides through. And can get through 4″ slats when properly motivated. The truth is, when female dogs are this smart, they can leave whenever they want to leave. The heart binds them to the property and a good dose of meds when the noise pollution increases.

Also, Sheba sometimes, when she gets anxious, will think that the floor is made of lava. She grew up on a concrete slab and slick floors are the devil. She likes carpets. She’s mostly house broken… but I don’t leave her unattended. It would be good to have a sectioned off area for her to get into the cool at will. You know, like a doggy door. And it would be great for someone to spend time and energy taking her further than I did. She didn’t have formal training, but she isn’t the wild ubangi that I got when we first rescued her.

She’s been in the house more and more with the hot weather. I just make sure to never ever leave any bread on the counter or anything you don’t want eaten.

If this home doesn’t work out for her, send her back to me if you need help. She’s a part of our hearts but, I think it would be good to have a person that would spend more time working with her lovely mind. And building trust. She gives a million kisses and cuddles a day. She has a lovely voice and vocalizes her love and her desire for food. Sheba’s a good girl.

I would think that they would need a LARGE box for her. And a strong one. She has some phobias about being trapped in small spaces. I don’t blame her. She can open most cages that most animals couldn’t. She needs a large fenced back yard and they need to check the fence frequently in order to see if she’s made any headway in looking for a squirrel on the other side of the fence. She loves squeaky balls. She carries one in her mouth and shakes her head. She loves kisses. But, it’s good to give her her space in the beginning when you’re getting to know her.

I had a nice conversation with Brock. He has never had an Airedale but has had 2 Scotties and a Westie. His current Scottie & Westie live with his parents in Chicago but he sees them a few times a year. (Airedale would need to e friendly to smaller dogs.) His current Scottie is a female spayed and he describes her as “crazy.” She gets on top of the couch and sits up on her behind with her front paws up. She is a bit stand-offish.

His brother lives with him and loves dogs and would help with the dog whenever needed, but Brock will be the adopter. (I told him we would need to meet the brother for the home visit. No problem.)

Brock works in telephone sales (business to business) and plans to take his Airedale to work with him. They could take a walk mid-day. We talked about the Airedale needing to be well-mannered to go to work with him and I asked if he had done any training with his previous dogs. Yes, he did basics: sit, stay, down, come, roll over, stand. Brock and his brother have different work schedules so if Brock had to, he could leave the Airedale at home. I told him we don’t want the Airedale left outside, even fenced in, with no one home. He would leave the Airedale in the house. We talked about the pros and cons of crates. He’s never used one but I told him some dogs like the crate ad to keep an open mind.

We talked about how much exercise his Airedale will get. Brock’s brother is a hiker and would take the Airedale hiking. Brock sometimes goes with him. He likes to walk and would walk the Airedale daily, weather permitting. There is a dog park that is well-renowned he said, close by. I cautioned him about taking his Airedale too soon to the dog park and suggested he wait a few weeks. Also talked about him familiarizing his dog to the yard on leash and in the house on leash initially to prevent the ‘dale from marking anywhere.

I asked about food for his Scotties. He thinks it was one of the Purina brands but for the Westie as it has gotten older, they’ve switched to Cesar canned. I suggested he look at dog food advisor for help finding the right food for his dog.

He doesn’t remember what HW meds his Scotties were on, but I told him here in the South he’ll have to use it year-round as well as flea/tick preventative. He was fine with that.

Brock would take an older dog. I asked if he had any travel plans coming up. He’s going to Chicago in September for a bachelor party but will be gone just for a long weekend and could get a dog sitter or kennel. He’ll probably be going to Chicago for Christmas also and would make arrangements or maybe take his Airedale with him. But it may be too many dogs. His sister and her husband have a Doberman and another dog.

I’ve texted and called his personal reference Eric Kentgen and Eric has called me. We’re playing phone tag.
