07/01/19: Interviewed Carin Bandy and she sounds very good, if a bit reticent in conversation.

I asked about their children, Bryce (female, 12) and Braxton (male, 6): How is Braxton with dogs? Has he been around large dogs? Yes, they had an Airedale before who died; their Terrier mix is about 60 lbs.
They currently have a beagle (2 y, neutered) and a terrier mix (13, spayed). I asked why they used different vets for their dogs. She no longer vaccinates Josie the terrier mix for anything other than rabies because of her age, so she takes her to a pop-up vet (one that offers low cost vacs at different sites around town).

Large yard Side yard. Let the dogs go out with them. Back yard fenced area separates their yard from woods. Airedale eventually was off leash and was very good about coming back when called.

Describe a typical day for your family She’s up at 5 they get everything ready – in summer are home with a sitter. A porch that spans the house and hang out on the porch. Her son goes into the yard with the dogs. She gets home around 3:30. Full basement that heated and ac and dog door that goes out into the fenced yard. Picks up kids from school so she’s there. Sometimes they try to walk, but the beagle pulls too much. Just have them upstairs with them. Her kids could walk their Airedale. Routine weekends just hang out or they’ll take the dogs with them.

Airedale was well-trained and she took him to obedience training. They have PetSmart to go to classes.

          Additional from Stew:
We had a long discussion about his preferences and the re-home incident. His likes the appearance and temperament of the Wheaton Terriers, Wire Hair Fox Terriers, Welsh Terriers, Airedale’s, etc. I understand that and can identify with his appeal toward that “look”. So I believe that is the whole discussion about show quality. Also, he doesn’t want an Airedale/Lab mix that is going to lay around and shed everywhere or an Airedale/Pit mix that he can’t trust around his grandkids. Having met him, I think he was just trying to express those thoughts up front.
As for the returned Airedale, he explained the dog’s history, his attempts to house train and the successful results that the new owners had. What we did not discuss but what I highly suspect is that this all may have happened around the time he lost his wife. I think the dog was reacting to emotional stress in the home, possible previous dog accident spots that it considered safe and limited previous house training. It got to the new home with a trained dog to mimic and the new behavior was learned.
He wants an alert companion with terrier personality and is well aware that an Airedale can counter surf more easily than a Welsh.
I am sure he would seek professional help if he needed training assistance but I believe he would prefer a dog in the 2-6 range that would already be fairly well potty trained.
          Hope this helps.

Morning, Stew. Thanks so much for visiting Art. Nothing replaces that face-to-face meeting. As you know he rehomed an Airedale after 8-9 months because he couldn’t train him to potty outside. Could you get a feel for how he would deal with behavior problems or training issues?

Having worked for *lawyers* (and he’s the owner of the firm), I know they can sometimes be intolerant of mistakes in people.

He also wants a “show” appearance in his Airedale. That sounds a little “picky.” Did you get that impression?

I’ll let him know he’s approved; still I’d like your insight into these

            07/04/19:
            Hi Jackie,
I met with Art Gardner at his home today related to his ARG adoption application. I found everything consistent with the information on his application and subsequent emails. He lives alone on a fairly remote piece of land in a spacious and uncluttered home with enough room (inside and out) for several Airedales. The inside is neat, clean and comfortable. There is a little evidence on the baseboards, molding and around the dog door that a dog has lived there. Basically, the inside area is big beautiful and dog friendly.
Art intends to leave the Airedale unattended (and likely kenneled) at home for only short periods. This is possible because he owns his company and his office is only 5-6 miles away. In addition, his grown married children live close by and can check on the dog regularly. Art wants an Airedale for companionship and, accordingly, intends to spend more time at home. He understands terrier disposition and wants that personality.
The entire back acre is fenced very securely with access to a large protected area leading to a dog door directly into the family room. He has Vets and grooming identified from his previous dogs.
It seems to be an ideal setup for an Airedale and Art appears to be very qualified to handle one.
If you need more information or have questions, just let me know.

07/02/19: Talked to Kara about Sherlock. She wanted to know how old the children were he lived with and if we could find out if he’d ever seen a cat. Her children, 7 and 8, lived with Max, but Max was an exceptional Airedale – very gentle, very laid-back, and older by the time the children really interacted with him.

I asked her about what kind of training they did with Max. they did a Petsmart class and then a more advanced obedience class where they worked on leash walking and he got his CGC. She mentioned that they already had cats when they got Max so he learned early to respect them. She would keep him on leash initially to keep him from going after the cats. I emphasized that that was a great idea especially for a young, untrained Airedale like Sherlock.

07/02/19: Katherine is being very cooperative and friendly about Odie. He can stay as long as we need him to, although she is having guests beginning July 12 and then going out of town the 14-18. He would need to be boarded beginning on the 12th. She sent me 20 photos and videos of Odie and he looks like a wonderful dog. I’m so glad to have more photos of him besides the ones taken when he was relinquished.

Hi, Katherine. We are sorry that Odie is not working out for you. We will find another home for him as soon as possible. We will not require you to pay the adoption fee. We will reimburse you for the cost of the vet visit and would hope that you can keep Odie a few days longer to give us time to find a suitable home for him.

In the meantime, do keep your appointment for Tuesday. Looking at the vet statement you sent, the appointment Tuesday must be for the second dose of the influenza vaccine. Is that correct? The de-worming med, Verbantal, should have worked on him, but please take a stool sample with you. I will call ahead and tell the vet’s office that we will pay for the visit, but we will request a vet-tech only appointment so that we don’t incur the cost of an office visit.

He was not due to have the distemper/parvo vaccine at your vet’s. The vet should have noticed from his previous records that Odie had already had his DHPP on May 22. I see you purchased a 6-pack of Sentinel and a 6-pack of Nexgard. He had heart worm preventative and flea/tick preventative on May 22, so he should not have had another dose of either until June 22. (We would like the remainder of the 6-packs to go with him when we move him.)

Please let me know if this is acceptable to you. We appreciate your cooperation.

Hi, Krishna. Thank you for your email. Sue Winkler has told me that she thinks you should be approved and I should have informed you. Unfortunately, Sue had to have emergency surgery this week and has not been able to forward her report to me. I do need to see the report; then I will talk to you further to discuss any questions I may have. I think we should be able to resolve this within the next few days. Please be patient with us.

I look forward to helping you find the right Airedale.

                              Hi Jackie,

Thanks for checking in. The initial training was certainly helpful. Beth is exceptionally talented in her line of work. I wanted to hold off on the next round of training until Odie and I got some of the initial behaviors addressed based on Beth’s work with us the other day. I did see some progress but he seems to be backtracking in a major way. Beth definitely warned me this would happen but it seems like he’s worse than before. He seems to be getting more aggressive with me and has probably done about $750-$1k worth of damage to stuff in the house. I only share that with you to give you an idea of what he’s been like. I totally understand this is part of the gamble in taking in a foster pup. I’ve tried CBD oil and lavender oil but neither of those seems to have an impact at all. I recognize there are (generally) no bad dogs, just bad owners. I truly love him and think he has potential. That being said, I do think that Odie will be better with someone else that can help him work through some of this. I’m sure there are plenty of people waiting to take on a young pup like Odie. I’ll be excited for them to make their perfect match.

I did take him to my local vet a couple of weeks ago (record attached). In addition to the normal initial exam, we also moved forward with some vaccines that will be necessary for boarding/doggie daycare, as well as ongoing treatments like Sentinel and NexGuard. He was still testing positive for hookworms so we had to get additional medication for that. He’s supposed to go in for a follow-up Tuesday. Knowing that was the plan, what are your thoughts on the next steps?

Thanks, again! I really appreciate y’all even giving me a chance with Odie. I’ll wait to hear back from you regarding the next steps.

She attached an invoice from her vet for $431+ for all shots, worming, influenza vaccines, etc.

06/29/19: Great interview. Just reading her application, I think I would approve her, but we’ll follow protocol. She’s terrific. I don’t know what she and her husband do, but they’re both home all the time and have two daughters 10 and 8. I asked if the girls were accustomed to large dogs – yes, of course. Friends and neighbors with Rottweilers and Labs, etc. The girls have been with dogs since coming home from being born. They bred WFTs before they had children, and have had 4 over the last 20 years. Their last one is 11 and is going for surgery to remove mammary tumors and be spayed this summer. They are building a pool but she said that would not prevent them from getting a dog now, because their dogs are never outside without them. Their dogs have always gone with them on vacation – they don’t travel anywhere that their dogs can’t go. The husband grooms their WFTs so would groom the ADT. The cook all their dog’s food and give supplements. Their fence is terrier proof.

                                  Just need a home visit.
