08/06/19: Background. Tracy found another group Astro Kennels and looking at their web site, they look good. She’s doing obedience training with Sara and things are going well.

          Sara’s microchip is through fetch-id.com

08/04/19: Hi Jackie! Thanks for reaching out. I was planning to catch up with you this week, too. Odie was diagnosed Thursday with conjunctivitis (pink eye) in both eyes. The vet prescribed an ointment that I’ll give him for the next week or so. (Details of the vet visit and Rx are attached.) Until he’s been symptom-free for 48 hours, then I’m keeping him quarantined from other dogs. He’s made good progress the last few days so I think he’ll be back to running with his dog friends soon.

I probably shouldn’t have used the word “aggressive.” He’s more so highly excitable. This leads to him being more physical. He isn’t aggressive or mean but he’s just not in control of his strength/emotions which leads to knocking people around, nipping out of excitement, etc. At doggie daycare, he now has to go to “timeout” periodically because he gets so excited that he gets other dogs wound up. Apparently, he caused a “riot in the dog yard” last week. 🙈 Otherwise, he’s great around other dogs and there’s no sign of food aggression or anything like that.

He’s been much less physical with me in the last couple of weeks. (I swear, he knows when I’ve told you that I’m ready to part ways with him…he immediately starts to behave more!) He seems to do well when I can get him to doggy daycare 4-5 times per week. I’m not opposed to that but the expense is more than I had anticipated when considering adopting a pup (about $450 per month). I should note, though, that while the nipping has slowed down with me, they do say that he’s continuing to do that with the staff at daycare.

We’ve definitely bonded over the last couple of months….so much so that I think some of what I was experiencing with him during this last wave of issues was him acting out because I left town. He seems to act out while I’m away and then for a period of time after I return. I don’t leave town too often but it would be enough (maybe 5-7 times per year) that it might be more stress to him (and me) than what I think is fair. Some of this might be based on his previous circumstances and being afraid that I’m leaving him permanently? Maybe over time he would adjust and realize that I’m always coming back?

This email response is probably a bit confusing. I’m sorry about that. He’s such a great pup. When he’s good, he’s soooooo good. When he’s bad, he’s sooooooo bad. I keep wrestling with the idea of adopting him but I’m worried that I can’t keep up with his energy (the expense of daycare and/or keeping him calm when I do need to travel out of town) or the overall expense of replacing things that he gets into (like I said, he’s now figuring out how to open the sliding closet doors….he’s just so stinkin’ smart!!).

Thanks for the update. I do appreciate it. If you find a good family for Odie, then I will be so excited for everyone involved. In the meantime, he and I are getting by. I’ll let you know if anything new develops. Thanks, again!

              07-27-19 Text thread begins:
She will be groomed Aug 6 (my b-day) and I am enrolling her in pet classes—Pet Smart has a Therapy Dog program and we’re going for it. She is a hugger—honestly, she does not want to be too far away from me.

JMC asked if Deb is considering keeping Maya:

That decision depends on her. It’s worth it to me to go through the Therapy Training but that will take time and $119/6 week session. This is NOT my determining factor, but IF she succeeds, then there is no question. I just have to see how she responds to Flora and other dogs, and I should know that in the next two weeks. I can’t wait to see her groomed️.

JMC asked how much the training was and offered to pay for it:

It’s $119 per 6-week session, but I have to go through 4 session to achieve Therapy dog accreditation. I looked on-line last night to see who offered this and the way she acts toward humans lets me know she should do well and for me, it is a life-saver. But I have to tell you, her future with me is very STRONG regardless of earning the therapy certification UNLESS something like what happened with Lilly occurs.

All is Mostly well. This girl is SO SWEET, but you can tell she bantered with her mate AND has had NO basic command training. I’m signing us up for Thursday classes beginning THIS Thursday—we, Mya, Flora, and I, are working on Sit and Stay and I do mean working. Flora is s Tremendous help as she knows these commands and LOVES getting treats for them. Also breaking her habit of grabbing my arm or hand with Kisses. I’m not surprised at this and her Strong Desire to be Loved and Cuddled is Tremendous—she can’t seem to get enough of it and that will make her easy to train.

                      07/30/19 from Anne:
                      Hi Jackie,
Yes I am definitely interested in Mr. Dash, I think I may be able to come to Georgia with my friend so I could meet him in his own environment and evaluate him myself.

That way there wouldn’t be issues about transport for you as a rescue group.

I usually like to spend a little time with a dog that I am taking on as a rescue. I have only taken one dog sight unseen, not even a photo. She was in great need and they transported her (in the S.F.Bay Area). It worked out fine. But because I’m fairly experienced about evaluating I like to use that skill if I can.

He looks like a nice boy but as I said I can’t have him demolishing my house. If he is a one dog wrecking crew, that’s not a good fit for me. But if I think I can work with him then I can endure a few chewed walls until he feels secure with me. My neighborhood is VERY quiet. I am concerned about the thunder and lightning storms of course.

I wouldn’t hesitate if I wasn’t working a 40 hour work week. I know for sure I will be taking time off over Labor Day prior to that weekend for about a week, but I think my friend will be traveling at that time. I will have to check with her to see if she is available.

So the short answer is yes, I’m definitely interested. The long answer is figuring out the logistics of everything.

Is this familyso at their breaking point with him that they just want him out of their house completely as soon as possible?

It would be interesting to be able to observe the interaction between owners and dog.

Has a competent and experienced dog trainer evaluated the cue and response between dog and owner? If so what is their assessment? The owner seems responsible and that she is trying to make things right but perhaps she is not experienced with finding solutions to emotional issues in a dog?

I basically think “There are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners.” Or dog owners not skilled to cope with problems.

I definitely did not do a great job on my first two dogs. I took my first dog to obedience class when I was about 9 or 10. Judge wrote….sits on return. HA HA HA. But I was devastated. I couldn’t keep my WFT’s attention because I was a novice…and he was REALLY my Dad’s dog. He loved my Dad best.

But getting back to Dash, I would love to talk to the owner if possible to find out what his issues are specifically and what remedies they have actually tried.

He has some very important characteristics going for him.

I love the fact that he is friendly, sweet and good with cats. But there is obviously a seriously issue if his second set of owners is anxious to get rid of him. Id like to know what is triggering these issues, besides noise.

To me having a dog is like marriage….for better or for worse and you try to work it out rather than turning a dog back in.

I’m just trying to be honest here about my thinking.

Glad you liked my photos of the Airedale fun day. I haven’t been dog-less in a long time. I usually have two at a time and use one to train the other as the second dog comes into my care. It has worked well.

Now I have to start all over with my training especially if a dog has behavioral issues, because i am strict about no dogs on furniture, NO counter surfing, and the basic commands- sit, stay, lay down, heel, come, no, off etc etc. All my dogs have been nicely behaved, people always remark about it but what they don’t know is that the dogs don’t come out of the box nicely behaved, they need to be taught.

Let me know what you are all thinking. Perhaps the woman who has the kennel can foster him for awhile until I can make arrangements for a visit.

I used to take my last two dogs to one of my patient’s all the time, especially if I had to spend the night there. They were well loved and my patient was very fond of them.

I live literally 5 minutes from my current patient’s home so I could could home in the middle of the day for a couple of hours. The longest stretch he’d be alone might be 3 hours. Eventually I would like to be confident that he could be out of his crate and have free run of the house. By 8 years of age he shouldn’t be tearing around the house anyway.
                      Thanks for reading all this…LOL.

                        She hasn’t returned my call.

                          07/29/19: Per Christina:
                          Clementine is ours!
                          She is an ARG dog.
She came to us as a puppy. THe vet in GA that we have used (forgot her name) took her in and spayed her. She came to my house and lived with me. We adopted her to a former ARG adopter who had moved to the VA area. Bay – you may remember them? I’ll go back at my notes. THen, suddenly the family surrendered her to us and the lady, Sueellen who lives in GA adopted her.

She came to ARG in 10/06 as an 8 mos puppy.
She was adopted by Sharon Krasna*** (?)
The Krasna* surrendered her in 11/13.

I found these notes about them:
. The other was Vinnie who went to the couple in DC/VA
area. (We named our Vinnie for him.) The man was from Czechoslovakia or Russia and they renamed Vinnie Montmorency, called him Monty

With a name like Clementine – easy to find!
That was her original name when she came to us as a puppy.
Gosh, she was soooo cute and sweet. She lived with me and Rosie and my CAT in the townhouse.

                          From JC
It was Krasny. Yes, they adopted Vinnie from Collierville, my and Wendell’s favorite foster ad we named our Vinnie after him. Oh, I didn’t remember that they returned a dog to us.

they surrendered her to us because she was attacking their farm animals.

07/27/19: Maya was picked up and is being fostered by Deb Hadaway. Early reports are that she’s great, affectionate, follows Deb everywhere, and so far, no issues with Flora.

07/28/19 Anne has rethought adopting Dash because she does work and even though she could probably come home if necessary, with his anxieties, she thinks it would be too much for him.

07/30/19: Message from Julie Tilson that she took Dash to the boarders and had been upset all day long because this was so hard. The boarding owner asked if we had a home. I don’t know that the boarding owner is going to keep him.

Background: We offered Cooper to Carin Bandy but her husband has just learned that he has a cancerous tumor near his eye and will undergo treatment and they need to postpone adoption.

Second choice was Krishna Chapatwala but she wanted to take Cooper for a “trial basis for 5 days,” and I told her no.

Then I got this email from Jerry Sutton on 07/29/19:
                                  Good morning Jackie,

I needed to provide you with the latest update regarding Cooper. As we discussed, Ashley was asked to drop Cooper off at Pet Play Place, his normal daycare and boarding facility. A reservation had been made to accommodate. The request was met with a relatively hostile response. I informed Ashley that I had made other arrangements for Cooper and she wanted to know all the details, which I declined to provide. She was persistent with whether or not he would be living with me. At the end of the exchange, I gave her a window of opportunity to drop Cooper at Pet Play Place (essentially over the weekend). I informed her that it was her choice to make. She could drop him off…or not. Originally, I had given Cooper to Ashley as a means of therapy and companionship and I had shared that I would pay his vet bills and food for the next year. During this exchange, I told her that if she chose not to drop Cooper off, his vet care and food would then become her responsibility and she wouldn’t get any support in that regard, from me. I was honestly confident she would drop him off, however, she did not. I suspect 1 of 2 things may have occurred. She may have reconsidered, or she may have consulted with her mother and Dawn could have encouraged her to keep him, as a means of therapy. Of course, I’m sure the latter is the case, and that Dawn committed to covering the vet and food. None the less, I’m disappointed. Part of me just wants to go take him back, however, that would be unwise. It would seem at this point, a stand-down on relinquishment is called for with the caveat of ramping it up again should the need arise. I’m so very grateful for you willingness to help and pray that support will still be available if needed.

My humble apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused you and your team.

                                  Sincerely,

                                  Jerry Sutton
