08/08/19: Asked if she could foster Oscar in Rome. No. She’s pet sitting for a friend and the dog doesn’t like other dogs, then she’s going to Japan. But keep her in mind.

          Hi Jackie –

Thank you for the information. After discussing it with Peggy, we don’t think this will work. We are happy to help and we were going to ask that we foster only but she seems like she likes her quiet time and Biscuit is active and we don’t know how they’d act together. And while I work out of the house, I do leave now and then during the day and the dogs stay in my office. We’re just not sure with Bella’s demeanor how they’d interact.

That said, while we’re not looking for a third dog, let us know if you have any other dogs that need fostering or have some in the future and we’ll see how things work. Odie looks like he might get along with other dogs but again, we’re not necessarily looking but if fostering (and potentially adopting) will help, let us know.

I trust you understand. We hate saying no but we don’t want to put the dog (or our dogs) in an uncomfortable situation. Fingers crossed you will find a good temporary and/or forever home for her.

          Hello ladies –

Peggy and I talked. We have two dogs now, a 13-year-old Puggle (who grew up with Bosox) and a five-year-old mutt who is about 40 pounds. They play really well together and based on the temperament of this Airedale it seems they’d get along.

We are discussing further. Do you have a photo of the dog and can you tell us how big she is? It would matter with our two others. We also have an underground fence so we’d have to get an additional collar for her to keep her safe.

Let me know please. We’d love to help but need to make a good decision based on our situation and what’s best for the dog.

          Thank you.

08/08/19: Hi, Peggy & Brian. Thank you for your thoughtful response. I understand your hesitancy and you are right to consider the effect she might have on your current pups. After talking with her mom, I feel that there is more going on there and think Bella might not be getting the attention she needs and could possibly perk up with proper care.

ARG considers you “golden” and would be happy for you to have any of our Airedales. Odie will be fine. He’s a wild child who just needs lots of training and structure. But we have good potential adopters for him.

We appreciate your willingness to help us and wish you the very best.

Thank you, again, for your consideration.

Hi, Sari. I have spoken to Dr. Robestelli and understand Clemmie’s prognosis and what will be required to care for her for however long she has left — in his estimate, 3 to 6 months.

Considering she will require special renal care food, subcutaneous fluids probably 2 to 3 times a week, Galiprant, and Gabapentin (both for pain), he estimated that her care will run between $300 and $400 per month. That does not include occasional blood work to check her kidney values to make sure the therapy is working, or if she worsens and requires more fluids or a phosphorus supplement that is commonly required in dogs with kidney disease..

We have come to the hard decision that we cannot take Clemmie. We cannot take on an expense of $300-$400 per month for an indefinite period of time. We recommend that you and your family accept the fact that Clemmie is not going to get better. Even if she did, and even if your mom is able to return home, it sounds like your mom would still require help for her own care and would not be able to care for Clemmie properly. Clemmie’s situation right now is dire. It is not good for her to be alone all day in her condition.

We know how hard this will be for you and your family. I am sorry that we cannot help you.

08/07/19: I have talked to Anne several times over the last two weeks because she is very interested in Dash. We have discussed everything that she writes about in her application before she submitted her application. She is very confident in her ability to work with a dog with issues – whether it is simple training or extreme anxieties like Dash has.

She has asked to speak to Dash’s mom, but so far Julie Tilson has not responded. (Dash is being fostered by the woman who owns the boarding kennel Julie uses, though the woman has said she can’t do it long-term.)

Anne has said that she wants to meet Dash and plans to drive to GA to do that.

                    Airedale Rescue Group

                    Phone interview: Mia Mandel
                    Roswell, GA

Mia is a teacher, husband works in computers. Twin daughters age 9 ½. There currently is a 14 yr. old Wheaton mix (female) and a 1 ½ year old Terrier mix in the house. No cats. Mia relates that the children are used to big dogs as their Wheaton mix (male) that they put down 2 years ago was 70 lbs. So she wanted to be clear that the children were used to big dog antics.
Currently the dogs have the kitchen and den as this is where the family spends most of their time. This area has a doggie door that leads out to the deck and small fenced grassy area from the kitchen. They have the run of this while they are at work. The larger yard, beyond the small grassy fenced area has a wood privacy fence around the perimeter. As I understood her, the dogs aren’t left in the bigger fenced yard unless attended.
She has no preferences regarding sex. She feels that a puppy would not be a good fit (agree). Mia said that a 1-2 yr. old would be great…2-5 years old being ideal. She did say that she didn’t want her preferences to be written in stone in that they want the best/right dog for them.
She did do a little back pedaling (in my opinion!) in that she related that Lucy (Wheaton mix) is getting up in age and that they are usually a “2 dog family.” I tried to clarify whether she was currently ready for a dog or just getting ready for when Lucy needed to be put down. She said if the “right dog came along, she’s ready.”
I spoke with Andrea at Orr Animal Hospital. There are no red flags. Lucy (14 yr. old) is currently not on heart worm preventive…Andrea said “she’s 14.” In my experience, I keep my ‘dales on preventative always, irrespective of age. So, I don’t know how you all feel about that. Otherwise, both dogs are up to date on all vaccinations and Lucy was most recently treated for a urinary tract infection.
I have a voice mail in to her personal reference, but have not as yet heard back. If/when I speak with the reference, I’ll let you all know. The groomer is on vacation until August 3rd.
I’ll make a note to try to get in touch with the groomer next week and forward any/all pertinent information.

                    As always…Kelly

08/04/19: Sari advised that Clementine has Stage 3 kidney failure. She is going to speak to the vet to see what his recommendations are for Clemmie.

08/06/19: Vet says she has 3 to 6 months and during that time should be in hospice care to receive fluids, change food to Royal Canin Renal Forumula, and Galaprent for pain (what pain?)

I left vm for Dr. Robestelli to call me.

                        08/06/19: Hey Jackie,

Right now is not a good time for us to take another dog in…foster or otherwise. I will be out of town 2 of the next 3 weeks; then we have a destination wedding in September; then we are keeping our grand pup for 3 months Oct – Christmas. My daughter is moving to Denver and we are keeping her dog until she finds a place to live. And as you probably know, we often babysit my son’s 2 lab puppies for the day, and one is blind so that is a challenge in itself…and we hope to start a renovation project in January.

We downsized after we got Duchess and our new home is over 3,000 sq feet less than our previous home…we really do not have the room for 3 dogs esp when we have grand pups here. I am happy to transport but cannot adopt another dog, much as I would like to…I feel bad saying “no”…let me know if I can help in another way. I will keep my ears open for someone who may be interesting in rescue/foster.

                        peace, Lee

She is working stock, do not know if it is Oorang, think that is what the breeder told us. She is not that tall, 24 inches at her shoulder, just plump. 57.5#

Yes, two of the pictures were taken today, and yes her one leg was shaved by the emergency vet.

Not tested or treated for heart worms, not something we did in Colorado.

Do not have funds to take her to a vet, again. We still have stuff to move, still have to get settled and we are nearly out of money. Ken is not working, hopefully when he feels better. I am retired so we live on social security and it barely meets our needs.

Hence part of the being stressed.

Are these photos after the snake bite and that’s why one leg has been shaved down?

According to your Release, she has not had shots since 2017. Has she been tested for heart worms or been on preventative? HW is probably not prevalent in CO, but it certainly is here in the South. You said you cannot get her spayed, but can you get her brought up to date on her vaccines?

Hope you all are doing well. We have a 7-y-o female Airedale coming into rescue and are looking for a foster and/or forever home for her. She’s in Blackville, SC, but we’ll need to get her to a vet and get her brought up to date on shots and have her spayed. I’d like to have a home identified and ready for her. She’s house-trained, crate-trained, likes dogs and people, hates cats, loves the car and walks, loves her crate. She’s laid-back and quiet.

She has no known health issues and is recovering from a copperhead bite about a month ago.

Do you think you can help us out?

Hi, Caroline. It’s so good to hear from you. I hope your trip to Sweden was as wonderful as you anticipated. You’ve certainly missed a hot summer in your part of the country – well, all over the country actually.

You’ve asked about Odie. I think Odie would do fine with your 10-year-old girls, but not with the baby. I know you know how to keep your children safe and have done so with your previous Airedale when your twins were young.

As to the e-fence, we are not fans for many reasons. 1) Airedales will breach a fence and risk getting zapped to go after a critter, but then won’t come back in; 2) other animals can come into the yard; 3) children can come into the yard. (We had a family in Atlanta whose dog was in their e-fence and some neighbor children were playing and chased a ball into the dog’s yard. The dog wanted it and bit the child. Not a good situation.)

We have adopted to people who have electronic fences but we require that they commit to NEVER leaving the dog outside unattended. I wonder how Odie or any Airedale would do with an electronic fence if he could see chickens nearby or the donkeys across the street.

All that aside, Odie is a youngster and smart so he’ll love training and if you’re committed to training him, we’ll help. He will have to be trained to the e-fence as well. It will be a process and one that will require constant, consistent, patient work on your part. He’ll love it.

Would you like to pursue this?
